That's what you get at Schilos.

Atmosphere is fun, and prices are reasonable, however, a schnitzel is neither: it's small and thick. Schnitzel is supposed to be wide and thin. And that from a guy who sent a lot of time in Germany and Austria, enjoying many of schnitzels. Here is the picture of what you get at Schilos, and the following pics of what I got in Europe.

Take a step back in time and enjoy a meal at a restaurant that's been around since 1917. Located in downtown San Antonio, the interior of Schilo's really has character. We came for a late Sunday breakfast and were immediately seated. Our service, by a waitress with a charming, radiant smile, was spectacular. Schilo's is known for making one of the best root beers anywhere, so I started with one of those, served in a frosty mug. If you love root beer, you won't find a better one than the one made in-house here. I ordered a breakfast of French toast with berries and a side of bacon. The French toast was standard but I loved that it came with a mini bottle of maple syrup. The delicious bacon (2 pieces) was served slightly chewy rather than crispy and the variety of fruit (blackberries, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, and melon) was fresh and vibrantly flavorful. While I was sipping on root beer, my wife ordered coffee which she oooohed and ahhhhed over and finally told me to taste it. It was really good! She spotted bags of Schilo's coffee beans for sale behind the counter and we ended up buying a bag. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place, a part of San Antonio's history.

Nice quick breakfast. Cut decor, oldest restaurant in SA. Super friendly service! A nice stroll on the Riverwalk after eating was really great too.

This was my first time trying to German restaurant. The inside was very warm and cozy with a rustic vibe. We were greeted and seated within a few minutes. The service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and quick to gather extra items we needed. I ordered a gluten free German waffle topped with strawberries and cream. A side of hash browns with , onions, cheese and a brat wurst, I loved the waffle. It was fluffy , semi sweet and huge! The hash browns with the cheese and onion were a great mixed together but they were a tad on the oily side. It was my first time trying a bratwurst sausage and I was pleased with the texture. Over all it was a great brunch combo. The only downside side is it wasn't brought out hot. My coworkers tried the split pea soup and the chicken and dumplings, and a Cobb salad. I was told the split pea soup was good and it had an earthy taste to it. The biscuits were huge and fluffy! Everyone was pretty pleased with their food. I did notice on the side of the building they had a little walk up to go window! I work near by so that deff comes in handy if you don't want to get mixed in the confusing lunch hour.

We visited Schilo's with high expectations, but the experience was mixed. There was about a 25-minute wait to be seated at 9:45 Saturday and service was very slow, though our waiter was friendly and accommodating, which we appreciated. The main issue was over-seasoning. The Schweineschnitzel (breaded pork cutlet) was unexpectedly spicy and heavy on cayenne. The potato pancakes were thick and doughy, and the applesauce was extremely cinnamon-forward, which did not pair well at all with the savory pancake. The sour cream on the side didn't help complement either flavor. The three-cheese spaetzle had too much nutmeg and parsley, leaving a lingering, funky aftertaste instead of a mild, buttery/cheesy flavor. Even the house-made root beer had an odd aftertaste. Schilo's has a lot of history and kind staff, but the food missed the mark in execution and felt less traditional than expected.

This is the oldest restaurant on the Riverwalk. The place was rented out for a dinner we were attending. The service was amazing, and the food was pretty good as well. They are known for good root beers! I'd recommend getting one. I really enjoyed it and ordered 3 more for the table. I will say things are quite old like the seats, but that makes sense for the oldest restaurant there. I really enjoyed the beef and all the sides and sauces. The salmon was a bit dry and had some bones I had to pick out.

Visiting San Antonio for business and read up on places to eat. This was one of them. I went for breakfast one morning and lunch another day. Both were busy. Both meals were absolutely delicious!

Great German-style food, incredible root beer, and super friendly staff. I'd highly recommend for a casual lunch.

One of the oldest restaurants in San Antonio is Shiloh's. Having worked behind the counter of a Jewish deli many years ago, I love going to good deli's and this is very much like a deli but not the same.. Along with my wife, we had our neighbors, who grow up in San Antonio and had never been here before, join us. The restaurant has an old style atmosphere about it with wood booths, tables and chairs. Tin ceiling tiles, fans and an old saloon continue the original San Antonio western feel we all love for those of us who live here and those who visit. A deli case filled with pastries, cheese cake and other goodies will make your mouth water. Like a lots of restaurants in Texas, Shiloh's is open 8-2:30 each day serving breakfast and lunch only. Our table service was friendly but a little slow. The breakfast menu looks fantastic but we came here after visiting the Briscoe Western Museum ( go there too) just around the corner in time for lunch. I had the taste of Germany, my wife had the Reuben with Pastromi, and my friend's had Riverwalk Kraut dog and a Cobb salad. My plate comes with schnitzel, red cabbage, sauerkraut, German potato salad and a bratwurst. I loved everything but the sauerkraut, which was good but too sour for my taste. The Reuben was very good but a lighter flavor than Jewish pastrami, which in my opinion is richer with a stronger flavor. My friends loved the hot dog, which was Texas size on a nice soft onion bun. Oh he also order a soft pretzel with beer cheese sauce which is really good. We had a straight root beer and a root beer float. Both were wonderful. Unfortunately we did not have room for the cheesecake which was a big mistake. We will be back for breakfast soon. Cheesecake is a breakfast item, isn't it?

I was in town for a conference and found this spot easily walkable from the convention center. I couldn't pass up the chance to eat at the oldest restaurant in San Antonio! I ordered a reuben sandwich with fries and a mug of their root beer. The meat was very tender and the sandwich was the perfect size. My friend got the split pea soup and really liked it. We expected to wait quite a bit before getting in but after a short wait, we were seated and then served by a great server.

Came in on a weekday and did a takeaway meal. The sandwiches always taste so good and they have delicious bakery items! Make sure you visit early because they aren't open for dinner. It's also a small restaurant so seating can be tight especially during tourist season. I've had the root beer float before and it's delicious. In terms of price, it's average for the area and slightly high for San Antonio. However, it's one of the less expensive places with decent food. The portions are huge so you can easily split or order a variety of items to share between a large group.

I was hankerin' for a Pastrami Sandwich and Schilo's was the closest. Their sandwiches are packed with tender, lean tasty pastrami. I also opted for the spicy mustard - yum!! I placed the order to go, which was ready by the time I drove the 3-miles to get there. So, service is great. I had to park in the public parking structure adjacent to Schilo's but, the $10 fee for the 7 minutes I was there is worth it!!! If you have time, I recommend staying and enjoying your meal there. The ambiance is traditional Deli with stamped copper ceilings and comfortable seating. As always - Eat In Good Health.

So, when co-workers wanted to go yesterday, I jumped on it. Don't get me wrong. I love the vibe of this place. I LOVE their story. It's very NY/Northeastern deli feel (they're from Pittsburgh, but you get my drift, right!?). No nonsense. Small inside area. No tables inside. Just enough room to look at the menu, order, and go wait outside. I opted for the chicken bacon ranch on hoagie. What came out was a decent size sandwich, but incredibly messy and soggy. There was so much juice/ liquid the sandwich quickly became unmanageable and just disintegrated. Look, if you're going to serve a sandwich that messy, please upgrade your napkins. It was a one bite - two napkin ratio. The sandwich was good, but the mess and difficulty eating it just took away any enjoyment. Additionally, the flies outside rivaled the worst I've experienced. Do you remember the scene in the Lost World, Jurassic Park movie when the hunters found the Rex nest!? Okay, okay, maybe not that bad, but it was a lot. Hang some fly bags or strips or somethin'. Found price to be a little high. By the time I bought chips and a drink, plus tip: $22. Just FYI: my co-worker disagrees. He thought it was the BEST SANDWICH HE'D EVER HAD. I was able to make my way here on my last day in San Antonio in late March thanks to my flight being delayed and my oh my, I am quite impressed! The older gentleman taking my order at the counter gave me a big smile when I mentioned I heard you have this thing called the serious sandwich here. He told me that they do and then stated "You won't regret ordering it, seriously." Chuckling, I decided on a half order of that along with a side of potato salad and their side of beans. After taking my first bite, I realized the gentleman was right. This is a dope sandwich! Excellent cured meats in the salamar and pair of hams along with the provolone and melted cheddar with the veggies, spices, italian dressing, and mustard. The bread they use holds up well and has a slight crunch to it. If you prefer your bread to have softness to it, you may have to ask if they can substitute a different bread instead of the italian flat bread they use. But I absolutely love this sandwich the way it is! As for the sides, the potato salad has a slight mustard taste and right consistency with a dash of paprika on top; just the way I like it. The beans are charro beans (I think) that are served steaming hot with some pork trimmings mixed in; I may have dipped my sandwich in it a couple times for flavor explosion. What can I say, I'm adventurous! There's some ferrari memorabilia and posters on the right side where some of the high top seating is. As a Ferrari F1 fan, I appreciate them displaying this here along with the track map of the COTA circuit in Austin. The seating area is spread out nicely with plenty of seats/tables and a drink station with some random signs up. All of interest to consumers like us. Definitely recommend coming here for either the serious sandwich or other delicious ones like their meatball sandwich or manhattan. I can't wait to come back and try the other ones but I may just stick with the serious sandwich cause I loved it. SERIOUSLY!

Tortilla chips with warm salsa were strange, the queso was okay, and dinner was a salad (fine) plus a buffet of ravioli and bowtie Alfredo. Pizza eventually appeared but disappeared quickly, and a few more pizzas showed up later. Some wings arrived even later and did not look appetizing. Most of the pastas and pizza lacked any real character or flavor. Drinks were poorly handled. Beer was fine but who delivers pints and then lets them sit on a service table for 20 minutes? I'm sure several went undrunk. Most of us left quickly after staying for the obligatory hour or so. Service mostly consisted of delivering food and drinks. There was very little attentiveness beyond that. The space, the food, and the service all left a lot to be desired. On top of that, there was basically nothing for the vegan in our group aside from some tortilla chips and warm salsa. That was a big miss. Not the worst place I've been, but overall it was disappointing. 2 stars.
