    Root beer float
    Jay B.

Thank you Joseph!!! He was an amazing waiter!! He definitely made our visit great and why we will return. Thank you! They make their own root beer! It was great! They refill it often. I noticed a few people come in just for the root beer. The food was good. Syrup was even warm. Definitely a nice touch. Food came out quickly. They did have a few schnitzel options on the menu but we didn't try them. The inside is spacious so they can accommodate large groups when it's slow.

Pronounced She-Lows. We had breakfast this morning and it was good. It was bustling on a Saturday morning but we were seated promptly and out food arrived fast. We were friends catching up and did not feel rushed. Attentive service. Loved my omelette.

We came early, so we didn't have to wait, although we had made reservations just in case. Our server caught me off guard at first because some of his responses came across as a little rude. After a bit, I realized he was joking, but it just wasn't my style. It happened a couple more times during the meal, and I still found it a little off-putting. As for the food, breakfast was just okay. It wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out or made me want to order it again. The atmosphere, though, was the highlight for me. I loved the interior, it has a relaxed vibe and makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Overall, it was a decent experience. I'd definitely be willing to give this place another shot for dinner the next time we're in San Antonio, since I've heard that's when they really shine.

Overall mid. Schnitzel was too thick and breading was soggy, but the flavor on the breading was good. More like a chicken cutlet. red cabbage was not stewed long enough and was not a huge fan of the flavor of their brine. potato salad was okay. servers were really nice and attentive.

San Antonio institute for a reason. Split pea soup was ok, would be better with ham and some bread. Rueben was awesome and the arugula salad is unexpectedly tasty with the addition of nuts. Service is quick, good old fashioned cuisine.

First time here and I was very impressed. I ordered a Root Beer to drink and was happy they served it in a cold frosted mug. You could tell the Root Beer was homemade as the balance of carbonation and flavor were great. I ordered the Taste of Germany plate and a side of the Spatzle all of. which were delicious and filling. For silverware you are given a fork and basically a butter knife, to illustrate how tender the Schnitzel was, I was able to easily cut the Schnitzel with the knife. Everything took me back to my time in Germany. We were too full to try dessert, but plan on going back. And the service was great and I love the history of Schilo's.

Great fast service & food!! A MUST GO place when by SA Alamo/Riverwalk. It's like taking a step back in time! Oldest restaurant in SA- established as a Saloon in 1917 and turned delicatessen in prohibition. Staff were extremely friendly, encouraged me to walk around, and showed pride when telling me the history of the building & restaurant. Showed me the old bank vault. 5 star service!! Multiple seating options. Large separate room for dining or parties. Cool old bar & cash register. I got there when they first opened. No wait. Then what appeared to be regulars started slowly rolling in. I enjoyed their famous cane sugar root beer in an ice cold mug ($4.50 and comes with one refill) Potato Pancakes - comes with delicious large bowl of applesauce Side of brautworst - felt like the german thing to do. Not my typical breakfast. Should have asked for a tad of their mustard. Open 8a-230p

I really wanted to enjoy this restaurant, especially being German myself and always looking forward to authentic German cuisine. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing, which is why I'm giving 3 stars. I ordered the veal Schnitzel with mushroom gravy (Jägerschnitzel) and red cabbage. The gravy had a strange gelatin-like consistency and lacked the rich flavor you'd expect from a proper Jäger sauce. The veal was extremely chewy and honestly made me feel ill afterward. The red cabbage was also very undercooked and completely lacked flavor. Overall, I personally did not find the food authentic or representative of true German cooking. What truly saved this experience was the outstanding customer service. Our server, Joseph, was attentive, professional, and genuinely kind throughout the meal. I also greatly appreciated Mr. Adam, the kitchen manager, who personally came out to discuss my concerns. He handled the constructive criticism with professionalism and openness, and I truly respected the fact that he listened carefully and considered my feedback regarding the sauce. Although I wouldn't personally return for the food, Joseph and Mr. Adam turned what could have been a terrible experience into one where I still felt valued as a customer. Their professionalism absolutely deserves recognition.

It's a must if you like German food and are on the riverwalk. Trust me...don't waste your time on other places. So few are good but this has been a staple since 1917. To remain that long in anything, they have to be doing something right. The Reuben is a perfect Reuben as you'd expect. The chicken and dumplings are a good hidden gem, especially if it's cold or you're hung over. The hefeweizen on tap is the bomb. The breaded cutlets...all of them...pork, veal, and chicken are fantastic. The deviled eggs are purely what you'd expect. The atmosphere is pristinely German. The German chocolate cake is delicious. The potato salad is very good and nothing funky. This place is exactly perfectly German and if you know...you know. Don't forget the homemade root beer.

Take a step back in time and enjoy a meal at a restaurant that's been around since 1917. Located in downtown San Antonio, the interior of Schilo's really has character. We came for a late Sunday breakfast and were immediately seated. Our service, by a waitress with a charming, radiant smile, was spectacular. Schilo's is known for making one of the best root beers anywhere, so I started with one of those, served in a frosty mug. If you love root beer, you won't find a better one than the one made in-house here. I ordered a breakfast of French toast with berries and a side of bacon. The French toast was standard but I loved that it came with a mini bottle of maple syrup. The delicious bacon (2 pieces) was served slightly chewy rather than crispy and the variety of fruit (blackberries, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, and melon) was fresh and vibrantly flavorful. While I was sipping on root beer, my wife ordered coffee which she oooohed and ahhhhed over and finally told me to taste it. It was really good! She spotted bags of Schilo's coffee beans for sale behind the counter and we ended up buying a bag. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place, a part of San Antonio's history.

This was my first time trying to German restaurant. The inside was very warm and cozy with a rustic vibe. We were greeted and seated within a few minutes. The service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and quick to gather extra items we needed. I ordered a gluten free German waffle topped with strawberries and cream. A side of hash browns with , onions, cheese and a brat wurst, I loved the waffle. It was fluffy , semi sweet and huge! The hash browns with the cheese and onion were a great mixed together but they were a tad on the oily side. It was my first time trying a bratwurst sausage and I was pleased with the texture. Over all it was a great brunch combo. The only downside side is it wasn't brought out hot. My coworkers tried the split pea soup and the chicken and dumplings, and a Cobb salad. I was told the split pea soup was good and it had an earthy taste to it. The biscuits were huge and fluffy! Everyone was pretty pleased with their food. I did notice on the side of the building they had a little walk up to go window! I work near by so that deff comes in handy if you don't want to get mixed in the confusing lunch hour.

Schweineschnitzel (fried breaded pork cutlet) with a side of spaetzle and corn casserole
    Cody L.

We visited Schilo's with high expectations, but the experience was mixed. There was about a 25-minute wait to be seated at 9:45 Saturday and service was very slow, though our waiter was friendly and accommodating, which we appreciated. The main issue was over-seasoning. The Schweineschnitzel (breaded pork cutlet) was unexpectedly spicy and heavy on cayenne. The potato pancakes were thick and doughy, and the applesauce was extremely cinnamon-forward, which did not pair well at all with the savory pancake. The sour cream on the side didn't help complement either flavor. The three-cheese spaetzle had too much nutmeg and parsley, leaving a lingering, funky aftertaste instead of a mild, buttery/cheesy flavor. Even the house-made root beer had an odd aftertaste. Schilo's has a lot of history and kind staff, but the food missed the mark in execution and felt less traditional than expected.

The grits blew my mind with it's rich butter and creamy texture while still have the grain texture. The fried tomatoes were met with a cornmeal fried crispy crunch and a juicy almost like it was marinated in lemon juice for a bit. The bacon was pretty good like a thick chunky sweet bacon strip. I personally like it a bit thinner and more crispy. I like that they offer orange juice and mango juice. My 2nd visit I knew better to get a reservation but it was completely booked when I looked to make a reservation the morning of. It was a Saturday morning. I walked in hoping anyways at 11am. They surprisingly had seats available outside this Texas summer lol. The meat pies were okay a little too greasy. I may be biased on Irish pub style meat pies. The nachos with boudin sauce and a lemon sour cream was out of this world with flavor. It what bean dip wishes it could be. I was so full I couldn't finish it, but I went for that dip. I had my family join me for brunch, and unfortunately, it left us with questions. The biggest question was, "Where was the favor?" I knew I wouldn't like the chicory coffee, yet there was another option available that I enjoyed more that was a decaf. The child's plate was one of the worst kid's meal values I've seen in a while. It was $10 for one tender and a beignet. The tender was small and left my child wanting more, so I paid $7 for an extra tender. Please consider a plate that has two tenders and fruit or potatoes for older kids since this was sized for a toddler. The $10 Doggy Meal looked like it could have provided that option since it came with grilled chicken, sweet potato, and steamed rice. The adult plates had enough food for an actual meal, so we shared our plates with my child who only wanted more chicken and potatoes at that point. The Bayou BLT was okay, yet nothing to rave about. My husband wasn't impressed with the Blue Crab Omelette, and my aunt said her Catfish St. Charles was very bland. We all had an order of beignets that were tough and chewy. My husband and I have had freshly baked and powdered beignets at Cafe Du Moude, so these tiny versions were a tough sell. What did have flavor? The Bananas Foster pancakes, which was the better dessert option. While the restaurant itself was cute, expect table service to be long. We constantly waited for waitstaff to return to refill coffee, bring napkins, or furnish a needed utensil. Also, the parking will be tight. We were lucky to get spots adjacent to the restaurant rather than offsite, yet you will be watched like a hawk when you attempt to leave. People want those spots. If you want the feel of brunch with okay-ish food at expensive prices, come to NOLA the restaurant. If you're expecting to relive the actual taste of NOLA the city, start booking your next getaway for the real deal.

As part of our wedding package, they were incredibly generous and included two complimentary nights at the hotel and dinner at Dorrego's for us to celebrate. They are truly the absolute best at what they do and really know how to celebrate their guests! Returning to the very place where we said "I do" was already emotional enough, but Hotel Valencia somehow made the experience even more memorable than our first stay. From the moment we arrived, the staff was exactly as we remembered them: kind, attentive, professional, thoughtful, and genuinely wonderful. Our room was absolutely gorgeous, and when we walked in on our first day, we found the sweetest surprise waiting for us: a bottle of champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, and a congratulations message written in chocolate on the plate. I actually teared up a little! It was such a thoughtful and adorable gesture that truly made us feel seen, celebrated, and cared for. There is something so special about Hotel Valencia. The environment is exceptional, the service is always outstanding, and even their gorgeous signature scent instantly brings us back to memories of love, celebration, and adventure. Every little detail feels intentional and memorable. I am so incredibly thankful that we chose Hotel Valencia as the place to celebrate both our wedding and our first anniversary. It will forever hold such a special place in our hearts, and we cannot wait to return again and make even more memories there. What we especially loved is that this hotel has so much character and charm. It doesn't feel like one of those cookie-cutter chain hotels. We had a balcony, although it was simply too hot during our visit to sit outside and enjoy it. I'm sure it would be wonderful on a cooler evening! The bar and restaurant were both excellent, and the entire staff was friendly and welcoming. A special shout-out to the valet guys they provided wonderful service and were always so helpful.
