The schnitzel was a little dry but the biscuit was light and fluffy. The potato pancakes were kinda doughy. I think the potatoes weren't wrung out before frying. Was in town on business and came to this place with my work colleagues, six people ordered and six people were disappointed. Bacon burnt, hash-browns burnt (returned them and came back greasy and burnt), pancakes were more like crêpes without the taste of the crepes. Everything tasty the same like a blacktop that should be replaced. We were shocked that our server even brought the meals to the table with the straight face. I would skip this place. My oldest son just graduated from Air Force boot camp, so he had a town pass to leave the base. Shilo is known for their own home brewed root beer and their Reuben sandwiches. They had German style food. We tried the root beer, Reuben sandwich, German schnitzel, and patty melt. And for dessert, we shared a peach cobbler with ice cream...it was all very delicious And the server was excellent also! He thanked my oldest son for his service since he was in uniform. I have walked past here many times while in San Antonio and never stop until today. Went in for the breakfast had the 2 egg breakfast with bacon and the biscuit. Great food great service Danny was my server on this trip. Went back the next morning and had the same breakfast. Same quick friendly service. Foood was hot and cooked perfectly! Jada was my server on the second trip and was just as nice and friendly as Danny and the whole staff is welcoming. Will definitely go back for the lunch next trip. From the Uncultured Swines perspective : let's just start off with the price so freaking reasothe food wasn't bad. It was pretty good it's definitely different. The biscuits were amazing the chicken with the gravy was a little spicy the applesauce definitely amazing love the coffee the eggs are OK I love you they thoroughly cook the hashbrowns but all in all it was OK it's not bad. The pancake was amazing though Cultured Swine : The bratwurst is fantastic and true to original taste. The biscuits are the perfect consistency and taste like a hug. The potato pancakes? Phenomenal! Found this on Yelp while searching for lunch spots. It was a rough choice whether to go here for breakfast or lunch. But the breakfast taco and cherry strudel on the menu won me over. And it was very close to Starbucks. They have a counter in the back for singles to eat but there was no foot rest so I opted for a two-top table. I ultimately moved back to the counter. Lee my waiter was very pleasant to took very good care of me. I ordered the egg, bean, cheese, avocado breakfast taco. It was the highlight of my day! Best breakfast taco ever! Historical does not necessarily equal good. More than several open tables and booths. On entry, was met by Ms Attitude who stated it would be a 20-25 minute wait and to step outside. As she uttered 'step outside' another waitress, Valerie, approached and said there were open tables, led us to a nice booth and took our order. Well, the reputation proceeds itself. The biscuits and gravy are really good. The fried chicken with biscuits and gravy, EVEN BETTER..... highly recommend. What i will say needs some major improvement is the coffee. First I thought it was rotten creamer. Til people at my table had the same experience and their coffee was black. There is something really wrong with coffee tasting sour....how is it even possible? Other than that, it was just a good diner with good classics. Super friendly staff and a cool local vibe. Schilos is a great example of why you need to keep your head up when you walk. If you just go to San Antonio and stay down below on the Riverwalk, you'll only experience subpar food and drink and not the best the city has to offer. Get off the Riverwalk get up on street level and go to Schilos at least for lunch. If you're used to New York style delis or Jewish delis, this is a little different but still very high-quality and really good Ruben and pastrami style sandwiches and German potato salad. Mix in a cold beverage and you've got it made. Definitely worth the trip. read more

We had high hopes, but it took three tries to get my wife's order correct. Azalea, our waitress was very good, but they just could not get this right. I ate my breakfast before it got cold, my wife ended up eating after I was finished. The breakfast sandwich was fine, nothing special as were the hashbrowns. The Bloody Mary was good...but I've had many many others that were better. We loved being "upstairs" (three steps). There were great old photos and postcards. TLDR: Sure, it's a tourist trap - but it's also a pretty darned good place for a bite to eat! Schilo's (pronounced SCHEE-lows) is supposed to be the oldest continuously operating restaurant in San Antonio. I don't know if it's true, but they've been around for a while and obviously they're doing something right! Also, for a Riverwalk-style place it's a relative bargain. And you're tired of the city's excellent Tex-Mex, this is a nice change of pace. Parking is easy at the parking structure next door; come off-hours if you can as this place is normally crowded and has a small line out the door. Inside, it's a German-themed wood-panel kind of place that reminds me of old-school NY delis. Service is friendly, if not particularly fast, but like I said it's a busy place. The Reubens here are very good, though not great. Again, I'm used to a NYC-style of sandwich where they slice the meat thinner and pile it high! However, so long as you order 'easy on the dressing and easy on the sauerkraut', your sandwich won't turn to mush in your hands. It's tasty, and you won't leave hungry. The star of the menu for me is the homemade root beer, which comes in a frosted mug. This is heaven in a mug, especially on a hot Texas summer day. Be sure to get this! Overall, this place scores a 4 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. So when I was here for work, I knew I had to try some historic places in SA. This happens to be the oldest restaurant in SA - since 1917 I believe. It's a German style deli. I came here for lunch and I enjoyed the split pea soup a lot. It was very, very good. My pastrami sandwich was good but nothing too spectacular. The chips appeared to be ruffles and the German potato salad was just okay. Service was a bit slow but picked up after I was greeted (took about 5 minutes to be greeted). I wish they brought out my pea soup sooner. I sat there about 15 minutes staring into the kitchen/bar. Probably wouldn't come back. read more

So I was here for lunch during Jury Duty. The food was pretty good. They have Pepsi products, so a Diet Dr. Pepper was my choice of drink. I had a breakfast dish recommended by my server. Had a wonderful breakfast while staying downtown for an evening. Potato pancakes were a staple at my grandparent's house growing up, and my Grandmother would have enjoyed the serving I got, especially since there was an ample compliment of onion in the mix. The applesauce was sweet and tasty, and the never ending coffee service was greatly appreciated. Came in while getting my car fixed and what a lovely surprise. The spinach, mushroom omlette was made fresh and full of flavor. They let you build your own and so many different options. Another must try is the sweet cream pancakes...very fluffy and spongy soft. Perfect texture on these puppies. This place has a warm atmosphere and make sure to ask for Brittany. We've tried both breakfast and lunch items on the menu, and we don't think we'll be back honestly. It's great that it's a landmark, but the food isn't much to rave about really. My husband got the Sweet Cream Pancakes with an egg and bacon. He said he liked it, just a classic pancake meal. I got the Chicken & Biscuits only because it was the only thing that stood out to me. The biscuits were moist, thankfully. I added a side of hash browns which were nothing special. The gravy had a nice peppery kick to it but was really salty, every bite I took I had to follow it with a sip of my drink. The chicken cutlet itself was not good. It was dry, even with the gravy I did not like it. The pretzels were a hard pass, they were pretty stale and a little hard to chew and the beer cheese wasn't too special either. A little too thick for our liking. My husband got a bacon cheeseburger, and he just said it was a basic burger. Nothing to rave about. I got the coveted Reuben, and it was pretty good.
