Pronounced She-Lows. We had breakfast this morning and it was good. It was bustling on a Saturday morning but we were seated promptly and out food arrived fast. We were friends catching up and did not feel rushed. Attentive service. Loved my omelette.
We came early, so we didn't have to wait, although we had made reservations just in case. Our server caught me off guard at first because some of his responses came across as a little rude. After a bit, I realized he was joking, but it just wasn't my style. It happened a couple more times during the meal, and I still found it a little off-putting. As for the food, breakfast was just okay. It wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out or made me want to order it again. The atmosphere, though, was the highlight for me. I loved the interior, it has a relaxed vibe and makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Overall, it was a decent experience. I'd definitely be willing to give this place another shot for dinner the next time we're in San Antonio, since I've heard that's when they really shine.
First time here and I was very impressed. I ordered a Root Beer to drink and was happy they served it in a cold frosted mug. You could tell the Root Beer was homemade as the balance of carbonation and flavor were great. I ordered the Taste of Germany plate and a side of the Spatzle all of. which were delicious and filling. For silverware you are given a fork and basically a butter knife, to illustrate how tender the Schnitzel was, I was able to easily cut the Schnitzel with the knife. Everything took me back to my time in Germany. We were too full to try dessert, but plan on going back. And the service was great and I love the history of Schilo's.
Great fast service & food!! A MUST GO place when by SA Alamo/Riverwalk. It's like taking a step back in time! Oldest restaurant in SA- established as a Saloon in 1917 and turned delicatessen in prohibition. Staff were extremely friendly, encouraged me to walk around, and showed pride when telling me the history of the building & restaurant. Showed me the old bank vault. 5 star service!! Multiple seating options. Large separate room for dining or parties. Cool old bar & cash register. I got there when they first opened. No wait. Then what appeared to be regulars started slowly rolling in. I enjoyed their famous cane sugar root beer in an ice cold mug ($4.50 and comes with one refill) Potato Pancakes - comes with delicious large bowl of applesauce Side of brautworst - felt like the german thing to do. This is a most impressive downtown restaurant if you want homestyle cooking and breakfast. Awesome service: Joseph is worth asking for. I couldn't come up with a question that he couldn't answer about the history of Schilo's. I would give it 5 +.
I really wanted to enjoy this restaurant, especially being German myself and always looking forward to authentic German cuisine. Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing, which is why I'm giving 3 stars. I ordered the veal Schnitzel with mushroom gravy (Jägerschnitzel) and red cabbage. The gravy had a strange gelatin-like consistency and lacked the rich flavor you'd expect from a proper Jäger sauce. The veal was extremely chewy and honestly made me feel ill afterward. The red cabbage was also very undercooked and completely lacked flavor. Overall, I personally did not find the food authentic or representative of true German cooking. What truly saved this experience was the outstanding customer service. Our server, Joseph, was attentive, professional, and genuinely kind throughout the meal. I also greatly appreciated Mr. Adam, the kitchen manager, who personally came out to discuss my concerns. He handled the constructive criticism with professionalism and openness, and I truly respected the fact that he listened carefully and considered my feedback regarding the sauce. Although I wouldn't personally return for the food, Joseph and Mr. Adam turned what could have been a terrible experience into one where I still felt valued as a customer. Their professionalism absolutely deserves recognition.
It's a must if you like German food and are on the riverwalk. Trust me...don't waste your time on other places. So few are good but this has been a staple since 1917. To remain that long in anything, they have to be doing something right. The Reuben is a perfect Reuben as you'd expect. The chicken and dumplings are a good hidden gem, especially if it's cold or you're hung over. The hefeweizen on tap is the bomb. The breaded cutlets...all of them...pork, veal, and chicken are fantastic. The deviled eggs are purely what you'd expect. The atmosphere is pristinely German. The German chocolate cake is delicious. The potato salad is very good and nothing funky. This place is exactly perfectly German and if you know...you know. Don't forget the homemade root beer.

Take a step back in time and enjoy a meal at a restaurant that's been around since 1917. Located in downtown San Antonio, the interior of Schilo's really has character. We came for a late Sunday breakfast and were immediately seated. Our service, by a waitress with a charming, radiant smile, was spectacular. Schilo's is known for making one of the best root beers anywhere, so I started with one of those, served in a frosty mug. If you love root beer, you won't find a better one than the one made in-house here. I ordered a breakfast of French toast with berries and a side of bacon. The French toast was standard but I loved that it came with a mini bottle of maple syrup. The delicious bacon (2 pieces) was served slightly chewy rather than crispy and the variety of fruit (blackberries, blueberries, grapes, strawberries, and melon) was fresh and vibrantly flavorful. While I was sipping on root beer, my wife ordered coffee which she oooohed and ahhhhed over and finally told me to taste it. It was really good! She spotted bags of Schilo's coffee beans for sale behind the counter and we ended up buying a bag. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this place, a part of San Antonio's history.
This was my first time trying to German restaurant. The inside was very warm and cozy with a rustic vibe. We were greeted and seated within a few minutes. The service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and quick to gather extra items we needed. I ordered a gluten free German waffle topped with strawberries and cream. A side of hash browns with , onions, cheese and a brat wurst, I loved the waffle. It was fluffy , semi sweet and huge! The hash browns with the cheese and onion were a great mixed together but they were a tad on the oily side. It was my first time trying a bratwurst sausage and I was pleased with the texture. Over all it was a great brunch combo. The only downside side is it wasn't brought out hot. My coworkers tried the split pea soup and the chicken and dumplings, and a Cobb salad. I was told the split pea soup was good and it had an earthy taste to it. The biscuits were huge and fluffy! Everyone was pretty pleased with their food. I did notice on the side of the building they had a little walk up to go window! I work near by so that deff comes in handy if you don't want to get mixed in the confusing lunch hour.
We visited Schilo's with high expectations, but the experience was mixed. There was about a 25-minute wait to be seated at 9:45 Saturday and service was very slow, though our waiter was friendly and accommodating, which we appreciated. The main issue was over-seasoning. The Schweineschnitzel (breaded pork cutlet) was unexpectedly spicy and heavy on cayenne. The potato pancakes were thick and doughy, and the applesauce was extremely cinnamon-forward, which did not pair well at all with the savory pancake. The sour cream on the side didn't help complement either flavor. The three-cheese spaetzle had too much nutmeg and parsley, leaving a lingering, funky aftertaste instead of a mild, buttery/cheesy flavor. Even the house-made root beer had an odd aftertaste. Schilo's has a lot of history and kind staff, but the food missed the mark in execution and felt less traditional than expected.
One of the oldest restaurants in San Antonio is Shiloh's. Having worked behind the counter of a Jewish deli many years ago, I love going to good deli's and this is very much like a deli but not the same.. Along with my wife, we had our neighbors, who grow up in San Antonio and had never been here before, join us. The restaurant has an old style atmosphere about it with wood booths, tables and chairs. Tin ceiling tiles, fans and an old saloon continue the original San Antonio western feel we all love for those of us who live here and those who visit. A deli case filled with pastries, cheese cake and other goodies will make your mouth water. Like a lots of restaurants in Texas, Shiloh's is open 8-2:30 each day serving breakfast and lunch only. Our table service was friendly but a little slow. The breakfast menu looks fantastic but we came here after visiting the Briscoe Western Museum ( go there too) just around the corner in time for lunch. I had the taste of Germany, my wife had the Reuben with Pastromi, and my friend's had Riverwalk Kraut dog and a Cobb salad. My plate comes with schnitzel, red cabbage, sauerkraut, German potato salad and a bratwurst. I loved everything but the sauerkraut, which was good but too sour for my taste. The Reuben was very good but a lighter flavor than Jewish pastrami, which in my opinion is richer with a stronger flavor. My friends loved the hot dog, which was Texas size on a nice soft onion bun. Oh he also order a soft pretzel with beer cheese sauce which is really good. We had a straight root beer and a root beer float. Both were wonderful. Unfortunately we did not have room for the cheesecake which was a big mistake. We will be back for breakfast soon. Cheesecake is a breakfast item, isn't it?

Very good food in a historic restaurant building with a lot of appropriate decor. Great service. The German food was absolutely delicious, and the prices were reasonable. First time visitor to San Antonio, and it was a treat to be able to eat in the oldest restaurant in the city. Would love to go back there again one day. Would highly recommend! read more

I don't come to SA without eating here. Get here when they open and set at the bar. Friendly banter and conversation between the staff make it feel like being at a family gathering. You get great service from people happy at their jobs and this is a textbook example of friendly, attentive service. Danny and all the staff took great care of me and recommend a breakfast mod of the Reuben lunch sandwich that was top notch. Especially the bread, a lot of places have a Rueben but the bread is just eh. Bonus points for the hash browns coming thin and crispy without having to ask special. Who likes thick, watery in the middle hash browns such that is the norm everywhere these days. Highly recommend a hand shaken bloodly Mary to get your morning veggies lol. read more

Can't wait to return! I've been here twice and had amazing experiences both times!! Sampler was great...was not expecting the Reuben balls to be so good but they were! Pickles and cheese were fresh!! Pretzel was soft and perfectly salted! Don't sleep on the German sausage! The avocado toast was perfect!!! The chicken sandwich may have been the best we ever tried! And you should absolutely try the German potato salad! Order the Paralyzer--that Root Beer is soooo good!! Try something with it! And the best thing you can put in your mouth is that hot mustard!! Our server was freaking unbelievable and we didn't have to wait to be seated! The Bloody Mary bar was to die for amazing!!! My bestie really enjoyed it and we will be going back! read more

Schilo's (She-lows) was definitely a hit with the fam today! Nothing like starting the morning with a frosty mug of homemade root beer! It was delicious, and I can only imagine how good it'd be as a float! Just know not all dishes are available until 10:30AM, but even so, such great food for the morning! Kiddo and hubby got the breakfast schnitzel and turned it into a biscuit sandwich of joy. Really nice crunch on the schnitzel, not heavy or greasy, and the biscuit was nice and fluffy. I got the Reuben on gluten free bread, and I loved how much bite it had. Lots of vinegar and pickling from the sauerkraut with some solid pastrami. The Russian dressing was also really good on the sandwich and also to dip the sandwich in, because...why not? I haven't had pastrami for so long, so this was such a treat to have a Reuben! Shilo's is a staple in the heart of SanAntonio right on street level. It's a beautiful historic building with a lovely vintage bar and antique decor to complement the building. I went for lunch, their menu consists of German style deli food. I loved the German style potato salad and my melted cheese and ham sandwich was on soft pumpernickel bread that was slightly grilled to perfection. Our server was great as it was our first time visiting so she had great recommendations and the drinks were a great compliment to our lunch. It was a great experience and definitely something different than the average Riverwalk meal. read more

We were looking for a fun breakfast place in San Antonio and discovered Schilos. This German delicatessen is located on street level, not the RiverWalk, and has a wonderful menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner and is the oldest restaurant in town. We visited for breakfast and stepped inside this cozy local establishment and were welcomed and seated promptly. The menu for breakfast has a nice variety of options without being over the top. I tried the breakfast schnitzel. It was just the right portion for me. A crunchy, breaded pork schnitzel filet topped with an over easy egg and accompanied with a fruit cup and biscuit. It was tasty and filling. Paired with a bottomless cup of their local brewed coffee this was just right for breakfast. There's a display case near the counter with a variety of dessert options but at this hour of the morning dessert wasn't on our mind. Next time for sure. read more

This is a must every time we visit San Antonio. The atmosphere is wonderfully rich in history, the food is delicious, the waitstaff are so nice! We had the "Taste of Germany" plate, and shared a really good slice of German Chocolate Cake (I forgot to take a photo of the cake). When you go to Schilo's, be sure to get a mug of the root beer -- they make it themselves and it's wonderful! read more

Finally! After almost 20 years, I ate at Schilo's. San Antonio's oldest restaurant! Their Weinerschnitzel was the best! Breading was exceptionally crispy, herbs within gave it great flavor, and the veal was tender and juicy. The Fries & Green Beans with Bacon I had along with it were the perfect sides. Order was quick-fast and ambiance was all good. Their classic root beer was ice-cold and refreshing. Perfect beverage to wash down any of their meals. This was our second visit for breakfast. It was just a short walk from our hotel. We had the breakfast tacos with the chorizo and split pea soup. Everything was delicious. It was a bit difficult to get our server when we needed her - only saw her when we ordered and when food arrived. So long period of time with empty coffee etc. But otherwise great and we'd return. read more

Really not great. Our server Jon Michael was amazing! The restaurant is really beautiful inside and the photos and details seem intentional, it was packed but the deviled eggs barely had any filling. Pea soup was yummy. We got the schnitzel sandwhich and it was pretty good actually. Fried were horrible. Truly just tasted frozen and not a lick of flavor or salt (the salt in the pic is what I added. I wish k tried the root beer, but I would t got out of my way to go back just to try it or anything else really. read more

The 5th star is for the outstanding service that we received from Joseph. He was extremely friendly and helpful! You can tell that he loves his job, and it shows with the high level of professionalism and customer service that he provides. We unknowingly arrived close to closing time of their first service. We thought for sure that we were going to be told to leave or just order something for take away. However, we were greeted by Joseph and he sat us down and explained that there was no rush, and that we would be taken care of, adding that we could stay as long as we liked. We were definitely relieved, especially since we were hungry. I am glad that we parked in the adjacent parking garage, otherwise we never would have realized that this place was there, since we entered the garage from the opposite side. I just happened to notice a sign for it as we walked down the stairs to get to the Briscoe Western Museum go a Yelp Elite Event. It is certainly not your usual deli. It has more of a saloon feel to it, with a dash of coffee shop, with a little diner mixed in. They had counter seating at the bar area, but we were seated at a cozy little half booth. The menu is full of all sorts of goodies, and you can order breakfast all day. I had my eye on the Pastrami Reuben. I opted for deviled eggs, rather than the standard fries or chips. My beverage of choice was the house made root beer. I also had a cup of split pea soup, which I was dying to try after seeing it on the menu. It did not disappoint! I was very pleased with my choices. Everything I ordered was delicious! My better half had the caprese melt with a side of the German potato salad, which I had a taste of and did not care for it. It was a little bland for me. She enjoyed her meal as well. I definitely want to make this a regular spot. Everything is reasonably priced and a great value for what you get. A welcome surprise, especially since it is in a touristy area, being located in walking distance to the Riverwalk. I definitely want to try everything on the menu! I do believe I will too. read more

I know pea soup usually sounds not the most appetizing, but their pea soup was so creamy and yummy. I completely enjoyed Schilo's, San Antonio's oldest working restaurant. The atmosphere is like walking into Gaston's Tavern from "Beauty and the Beast"....so fun! Nice music played in the background, but not too loud, so it's conducive for conversation. Their German food is delicious! I got SCHILO'S TASTE OF GERMANY for $16.00 ...a great platter for trying multiple items: Bratwurst, 3 oz schweineschnitzel, red cabbage, German potato salad, sauerkraut, and red wine mushroom gravy. SO GOOD! My husband got SCHNITZEL SANDWICH for $14.00, which was yummy, as well. I recommend getting their "famous" root beer, too. I love this German Delicatessen in downtown San Antonio! The food is always amazing and the root beer is always cold delicious! The servers all seem happy to be working there, which is a nice experience for the customer too. I like to bring out of town guests to the restaurant, too, because it has kept the history of the building alive. (It began life as a bank which was a long time ago because Schilo's has been operating as a restaurant in San Antonio for more than 100 years!) read more
Food: 1/5 Schilo's is pricey and a far cry from German food considering their praise and history. The sandwich was soggy with a thick and tough chicken in the middle. The cheesy spaetzle was cold and congealed. The fries matched the theme of being soggy and cold. Service: 2/5 Friendly, but was very clear the goal was to get our table cleared as quickly as possible. Would have loved to order more than a single drink, but never had the opportunity to place the order after food was at the table. Great place for lunch or dinner. I used to purchase their mustard every couple of weeks. It was excellent and made in house daily. Schilos has now outsourced the manufacturing of the mustard. The "house" mustard is no longer made and in house, and is now no better than french's mustard. So disappointed in the new management. read more

Really nice atmosphere. Our server Jennifer was fantastic. She made some recommendations off the menu which were spot on. Love the root beer. Looking at taking a case home. Tried the adult root beer with crown royal and amaretto. Spot on excellent. Never had anything like it before. I had schnitzel and bratwurst. Bratwurst was exceptional fresh and handmade. Schnitzel was thicker than I'm used to, but very good. Mushroom gravy also excellent. Wife tried the breakfast fare. Their biscuits are fluffy and light and delicious. Tried the Cajun bacon..... a bit mild from my taste. Still you can tell as well made. Perfectly cooked. All in all, highly recommend. Would definitely come back. read more

My new favorite local spot in San Antonio! I've passed by it for years while coming to the downtown area for conventions, but never stopped in since the lines are always out the door! After today, I can see why the wait is always so long, and it's worth the wait! If you get the pretzel, the side of beer cheese is a MUST! I could pour it on everything it's so good! Out of the 3 types of schnitzel, the pork was my favorite! (But the others were delicious as well!) I've been told by some family friends that 'you have to get the cheesecake'...and I'm so happy I did! The portions are big, the prices are very reasonable and the staff was very friendly! My dad and I were at the Briscoe museum nearby and surprisingly all of the museum employees highly recommended this place for lunch. There was a line outside the door, but it was no more than a 20 minute wait. I loved how the outside and inside looked very vintage and historic. The waitress and the hostess were extremely nice. My dad and I enjoyed the freshly made in house root beer. It was honestly not that carbonated like the bottled ones in the store and very easy to drink. My dad is a root beer fanatic, so he loved all the refills. The food was amazing. We were recommended to try the reuben sandwich and the schnitzel sandwich. Both had phenomenal flavor and cooked to perfection. We tried the cheesecake for dessert and it was made differently but still a great way to end our wonderful experience. Schilo's claims to be the oldest restaurant in San Antonio. Upon entering the building, there is no doubt that the building and fixtures are old - the old fashioned wooden counter and booths and the paneled walls lend to the homey ambiance, though, the taxidermy all around the back room was a little disarming for this non-hunter. 10:30 on a quiet Thursday morning was about a short 10 minute wait for our party of 8. I imagine the wait on weekends could be quite long. (It's worth it though!) Once seated, we were cheerily greeted by our sweet server. She took our drink orders and gave us a moment to peruse the abundant menu. The expected breakfast foods with the inclusion of potato pancakes and breakfast tacos, schnitzels, deli sandwiches, burgers, salads and a whole list of sides round out the offerings. It was so hard to decide but I finally settled on weinerschnitzel. The hubs had the potato pancakes , my SIL had the Reuben and the rest of our party opted for traditional breakfast faves. It didn't take long for our food to come. The large table was almost too small for the quantity of food. My weinerschnitzal was delicious - thin, crispy tender - just the way it should be. The red cabbage was good if unremarkable but I really did not care for the German potato salad. It also came with a thick slice of rye bread. The potato pancakes weren't huge but they were perfect. They were served with applesauce and sour cream. The Reuben wouldn't rival one from a New York deli but my SIL still really enjoyed it. Except for a to-go box for me, not another morsel of food remained on the table. One of the house specialties is root beer. They also offer spiked root beer. Since it was my birthday, I decided to day-drink and ordered a one. Not sure what it was called but bit had rum and kahlua. It was so strong that I had to water it down with more root beer so I was able to drink it. It was good but I wouldn't order it again. Schiloh's is very reasonable. VERY reasonable. That's countered by the (un-validated) paid parking. Bring your appetite but be prepared for a potentially long wait.- read more
