Arrived and was seated at the worse table in the place, next to kitchen, bathroom and two portable air conditioners set on 79 degrees. Went reviewed their draft beer list and wasn't impressed at the variety. Finally decided on my choice only to be told it wasn't available... got water. Reviewed menu, typical pub grub ... no worries ... decided on their specialty chili and fish and chips (hoping for carryover from their prior reputation as Zackles Fish).... told chili wasn't available either. Fish and chips arrived and it was very disappointing. Basic frozen fish that was deep fried and had a heavy cardboard like coating that was inedible (at least by me). I opted for onion rings as the chips I was told were something dusted with flavoring. The onion rings turned out frozen flash fried as well. The the plate they were served on was so small that I didn't have room to squirt some ketchup amongst the deep-fried tower of disappointment. The tartar sauce was in a small container like you might get out of a vending machine. My wife got a burger and fries that she said were "ok" ... Went to restroom and after carefully stepping over portable air conditioner cords taped to the floor found the restroom to be equally disappointing ... one for all with a door bolt for your privacy ... no very clean ... but it was a busy Saturday night ... so give a bit of a pass on that I guess. Walking to car afterwards was startled by young employee smoking under the building. I will say that had we been seated in a different area, the main dining room instead of the side room, away from the portable air conditioners, then perhaps the whole tone would've been different... but the food and selection would've still led me to the same end opinion... I won't be going back until the next iteration of ownership. Bring back Zackles-like restaurant. read more

My family and I recently traveled out this way to see this new restaurant. We always went to the previous place, Zackles, and were eager to try the new restaurants food. My first impression walking inside the doors was shock. I couldn't believe how beautifully they designed the place. Knowing how it looked before, this was a game changer. The took the place from fire hall fish fry to a classy restaurant. The menu offered more options than zackles, and had more specialty items present. The food we ordered was great, but I don't believe the price was accurate for the quantity of food. For example, the large serving of spaghetti someone at my table ordered only came with one meatball which they weren't pleased with. Also, the burger someone else ordered was abnormally thick, and tough to eat. These aren't big issues, and did not ruin our meal, we overall enjoyed the food. I would come back, but I hope they critique their menu a bit! read more

We came to the new Schoolhouse Tavern that was placed in the old Zackel's. First off, this place received a major face lift. It looks awsome. The seating is somewhat limited, but we were still seated in about a half an hour even without a reservation on a Friday night. The food matched the atmosphere. It was great. My wife had pulled pork nachos, which was huge and full of flavor. My kids had wings which were good also. I myself ordered a sandwich from the Octoberfest menu that was wonderful. We will be back and I cannot wait to try other things on their menu! read more

My husband and I each ordered a meal, along with an appetizer of fried zucchini ($9). I asked the waitress to bring out the zucchini with our meals. Well, someone else brought out the zucchini..it looked great, only to discover that the zucchini was sliced paper thin, and the batter tasted like it was cooked in the same oil that fish had been fried in. Next, my husband's dinner arrives, not mine. After about 5-10 minutes, my husband got up to look for our waitress, as she never came back to check on us, only to see her outside smoking. We got every excuse for the missing meal; along with an offer of dessert, but my stomach was queasy from the fish oil. We hosted a wedding rehearsal dinner & everything was excellent. I left all of the planning & execution of the event in the very capable hands of Renée, Chris & the staff. The food & drinks were timely & excellent. Renée even had custom menus printed in the colors of the wedding invitations as an added touch. I was concerned that with our event being on a Friday evening that we would have issues competing for service - those concerns were quickly erased as the service was excellent. we highly recommend that you consider the dining area for your next gathering. We have been eating their fish sandwiches since I was 5 and that was loooong ago. They bought this restaurant from Far Zackles and the fish sandwiches changed and the sauce for the fish was not the old sauce- will not be going back! Such a shame- go to Jioios in Carbon!!! read more

The remodel is very nice. Definitely a nicer atmosphere than Fat Zackel's. However, the fish is definitely not the same or the onion sauce. Zackel's fish was breaded fresh and what they are serving now is something that seems to be from a food service company as the fish filets are all the same thickness and size and the breading is different from Zackel's. I have also tried some of their other offerings: salads, burgers, pizza, wings. I find that the food is just okay and very inconsistent each time. Consistency is very important to me and they just don't seem to be able to put out a product that is delicious every time. I will say that there are times when it has been good, but lately the burgers have been dry and overcooked, the fish is also dry and overcooked, French fries are greasy and tasteless, salad lettuce not fresh and items missing from what is supposed to be in the salad, pizza has been soggy, wings overcooked and dry. We have given this restaurant plenty of chances as we live close by but unfortunately we had to give up and move on to better places and we are glad that we did. read more

The atmosphere is great, I love all of the old schoolhouse details and they even have a few old schoolhouse desks, it definitely has a tavern feel. I've been here many times and the food is fantastic!!! The decor is really nice, as well as the atmosphere! I was there for a taco Tuesday not too long ago and that's about the best deal in the area!!! They need a better wine selection. In fact, I've stopped ordering wine and now get water because the brand that they serve is not very good. I believe it's Corbet Canyon? GAG!!! Maybe have some better options available, at least for the reds, and charge the extra buck? Mondavi Private Selection? Columbia Crest? 19 Crimes? Something in that $10-$12 price range? Also, the acoustics are not great. I did see where they have added sound sponges to the wall to help alleviate that problem, and I do think it's helped a bit. When they first opened, the noise level was a disaster. It is a bit pricey for Westmorelan-tucky, but there are plenty of people willing to pay for a nice dinner in the 'burbs! read more

We decided to try this since the menu looked good and the pictures of the renovation were beautiful. My inlaws beat us there and reserved a table for us. We had my 3 year old daughter with us who was excellently behaved while we waited, and waited and waited! We were never acknowledged by the wait staff. The two waitresses brought food and drinks to other patrons while walking by our table several times. We waited 20 minutes and left. We won't be back. I haven't been here since the days of Fat Zackel's and their famous fish sandwiches! I was in the area and excited to see what changes had been made. WOW - the parking lot was full, the wait to be seated was approaching an hour, and people continued to pour in. All good signs, unless, of course, you're really hungry and don't want to wait. We decided to sit at the bar and were quickly greeted by a friendly bartender. Not too many interesting beer options on tap, however, they do have a nice bottle selection if you want an IPA or a Twisted Tea or a stout. The three of us waited just about an hour for our meals. The two dining with me had the pulled pork sandwiches and thought they were great - both chose a side order of sweet potato fries. I had the pot roast sandwich. I loved that it came with gouda cheese - I would never have thought to pair gouda with pot roast, but it was great. I think a little more gravy on the sandwich would have been good, but overall, the sandwich was great. If I'm back in the area I'd return, but I would recommend picking a weeknight or an off peak time because I don't think their kitchen can keep up with the number of diners. read more

The atmosphere here is fun and comfortable. You can relax and have a very reasonable dinner with your family on the dining side, or have a few drinks at the bar with the upbeat bartenders. The food is excellent, everything that I've tried thus far has been delicious and generously portioned. There could be a bit more organization when it comes to getting people's food to them, and I do hope that there's an a/c solution by next summer. Stopped in for the first time a few nights ago. Got the steak pizza and the meatball pizza. The meatball pizza is excellent. Almost like eating lasagna on a pizza shell. The steak pizza was also very good. Nice interior. Ate in the bar area. Once we got waited on, she returned to the table many times even though the place was fairly busy. Very good place to eat , it's small and a cute place , always clean and service is great. The food is always good even though sometimes it does take a little long . I was a fan of the SchoolHouse Tavern until today. We went there for diner and sat over by the bar at on of the High top tables to watch the games. The food was good but service was not. Then there was the group of guys yelling dropping the F bomb and MF'ning everything and everything. The Bar Tender told to keep it down but not once did you see the manager say anything. There was a group of older people that asked to be moved to another table, still nothing said. There were families with Children looking, but still nothing said to this Group of guys. I hope the spend enough to make up for the people that will not be coming back. read more

The old Fatz Zackels is now The Schoolhouse Tavern. I admit, I was skeptical. This past Friday I attended our 50th Class Renuion there and I was wrong, dead wrong! Their fish is to die for! The hot onion sauce is perfect, not too hot. The only thing missing is old Fatz behind the bar or Zeek pranking you with the ketchup bottle. The numerous owners after Zeek sold the business were terrible. On the otherhand, these new owners are great cooks and the place is spotlessly clean with an new all stainless kitchen. They've also renovated the old building tastefully to a warm cozy environment with an actual stone fireplace! What's more, the walls are decorated with old photos of Claridge as it was back in the day and the owners even use the chalkboards of the original schoolhouse building found in the basement during renovation. (My grandmother attended this two room school before Claridge school was built in the 1920s.)What a wonderful thing that these new owners have preserved not only the history of the old building but the delicious fish we all grew up on! If you are local to the area you know what I mean! They also have an extended menu of great dishes if you aren't a fish fan. (The waitress recommends the Chicken Marsala.) I got the macaroni and cheese as a side which was very cheesy and good. But the fish...God Bless the fish!!!!! I missed the fish! No one made fish like Fatz. Now it's back and so am I!!! My wife and I ventured into this place yesterday and were very pleasantly surprised. Very comfortable "sports bar" environment with plenty of seating, all with good views of the many tvs. The service was great and the food was a cut above the typical sports bar fare. Great value for the price. The only thing that keeps me from rating it 5 stars is the limited wine selection. (My wife's drink of choice.) That said, my wife had the house chardonnay and enjoyed it. very slow service, food not that great - appetizers are very very small for the price, except for the nachoes. $5 for mashed potatoes is a bit much, chicken marsala was very, very dry, chicken wraps not very tasty, fish is not the old zachels recipe ok but not great, salad $14 little too expensive. No one in the restaurant when we sit down , took forever to get our order and then took forever to get our food and took forever for the waitress to bring our check. The one star rating is being generous. The one star is for the nice decor. The worst dining experience I ever had. They were unable to effectively handle the crowd. They were busy due to home coming and they were not prepared. We waited for a table and as we were about to be seated the owner came over to people who came after us and who she was friends with and sat them at the table we were going to be seated. We were then seated and we ordered after sitting for 20 minutes. We ordered fried zucchini for an appetizer and when it came after an half hour of waiting, it was so salty it was like eating salt directly from the salt shaker. The table next to us were also unable to eat the zucchini. We waited another half hour for the dinner entrees. One of the people in the party ordered chicken wings and those were also salty.
