5/5 Stars Schoolyard Garden is such a gem! I stopped in recently and was immediately struck by the energetic vibe. The space has a great buzz to it--lively and welcoming without being overwhelming--making it a perfect spot for a casual hangout or a mid-week pick-me-up. What really stood out, though, was the customer service. The staff was incredibly attentive, friendly, and genuinely seemed happy to be there. It's rare to find a place where the service matches the high energy of the room so perfectly. On top of the great atmosphere, the prices are very reasonable. It's refreshing to find a spot in Denver that delivers this kind of quality and experience without breaking the bank. Went with a friend and since this a walk up and order place that doesn't serve you like a restaurant, I was very surprised to find out they automatically charge a 20% gratuity on every order. The service was subpar, if not terrible to non-existent. You have to pay at each station you order from so you cannot get food and drinks at the same place. This is not only inconvenient but also a lot of work on the customer's part, similar to a mall food court. Clearly not well thought out and seems a bit pointless. The bartender was nice, however, and seemed to be the only person that knew what was going on during my recent experience here. I tried to order something vegan here, in which you would think the typical fares that are vegan would be safe to order, but not even the falafel is vegan bc they put eggs in it for some strange and unusual reason. (Mind you I'm a falafel connoisseur and it's always vegan and does not require eggs for the purpose of a binding agent, as they explain here. ) Thinking the veggie and hummus plate would be safe, I asked if it was vegan and was told it was. When I received it, there was some large mass of white yogurt type substances on it which encompassed all of my veggies. I took the plate back up to the counter to ask what it was and they told me that it was yogurt based and I should just eat around it. Feeling slighted, I begrudgingly went back to my table and started wiping the yogurt, substance off of my veggies and tried to separate them out as much as I could. My friend saw me struggling with my food and having been in the restaurant industry herself, she was confused on the customer service side of things so she decided to order us some sweet potato fries to cheer me up and go chat with the clerk. She asked the clerk about it and told her that she needed to replace the dip with something else I could not eat since they served me something dairy based when I had clearly asked for something vegan. The clerk obviously was dumbfounded and just looked at my friend like she was from Mars! She asked to speak to a manager to help out with the situation since are was getting nowhere with the attending clerk. The manager was extremely surprised that there was a vegan request and offered to send over some hummus and extra veggies to circumvent the situation. I guess they don't know what vegans are here and do not offer anything for vegans, gluten free, or other food intolerance. This is incredibly insulting given that this is fairly new place and it's 2026!! Get with the times people! Even barbecue restaurants have vegan options or at least know what a vegan is! The veggies seemed fresh, but I was extremely disappointed in the hummus, which was definitely Cedars store-bought. It was very grainy and lacked much flavor. The value for the meal was just not there, on top of having terrible customer support. Given I paid $15 + a non-negotiable, mandatory 20% tip. I could have easily went and got myself a package of Cedars at the grocery store and chopped up a few veggies with pita bread to eat at home. Point being, I was really hungry when I met my friend for drinks and had a very long day at work so I just wanted to get food in my stomach. I was extremely disappointed in the entire situation, to say the least. I must add the drinks are expensive and only found one to be enjoyable. The strawberry lemonade did not have any strawberries or taste as such. It was just a super sweet concoction with subpar vodka that is premade. Again, what am I tipping 20% for if the drinks are premade with low grade ingredients and I'm ordering from a window without any actual server serving me in any way? Although the idea and decor is original and has a nice ambiance, they clearly missed their mark when it comes to ease of ordering, value, and customer service. They clearly have zero clue to what vegan (or dietary preference) is and have yet to establish any connection with their customer base or demographic of Denver, with its versatile citywide culture. read more

Just read Pam's review. Hm... Well, initially I was glad about the 20% gratuity included across the board. It reduces cognitive load, mistakes and over-tipping and not tipping - However, this assumes excellent and consistent service... On service at the Beer Garden: It was my first time to the Beer Garden section after having been several times to the cafe over the past year and this year. I had no idea what to expect. I was surprised that it was a walkup and order. That was definitely convenient tho so I didn't mind. My friend and I were getting food to have outside. My friend is vegan so I'm always curious as to what she's going to be eating. She was curious too. She ordered and when we got outside, she was looking at her food and unsure about what was on her plate. She took it back because she is VEGAN, not vegetarian and she had ordered something that had hummus and something else on it - a big white dollop of something which did turn out to be vegetarian and not vegan even tho when we were at the register ordering she had specifically asked about vegan options. When she brought the plate back inside to inquire - the girl apparently told her to eat around the other thing. Are you kidding me? I was like what? I went inside to figure out wtf. As someone that has worked in restaurants, I was like wtf... I went inside to order some sweet potato fries and get a replacement for whatever my friend paid for but wouldn't be eating and I asked the girl what they could give my friend to replace whatever that was that she wasn't able to eat. She said she heard my friend say "vegetarian" and just stared at me. I'm like okay...so what are you going to give her to replace that with since she's vegan. She just repeated herself and stared at me. Then she said she would get a manager. We waited for my sweet potato fries and a manager...and then a real manager. I guess there are a few levels there. The real manager was surprised that there was a vegan customer. She was able to correct the situation. They got some more hummus for my friend. I said it was our first time to the Beer Garden part and that we had been to the cafe several times. I told her I wanted it to be a good experience for my friend . Obviously tho, like why am I even having to explain this. The manager was friendly and understanding enough but everything took so long that I ordered a burger and really, that was the saving grace for me there. It was delicious! May go back for another one! But back to the 20% gratuity situation - it took a little long for the cashier to acknowledge and correct the mistake. And telling my friend to eat around the vegetarian part was just like - what tf... can they give my friend the 20% tip back? On service at the cafe: I'd already written a review for Schoolyard Cafe awhile ago but it's in my neighborhood so I do go there more often than not. It's always packed outside on their massive patio on a nice day and I love their frozen espresso martinis and frozés. The cafe however, had made some adjustments to their bakery supplier and menu. Pastries don't look as fabulous anymore and their menu doesn't have the delicious potato salad anymore. I ordered a new menu item and it did not arrive as expected. It was a greek salad bowl with hot chick peas on top. I wanted to vomit. It took awhile for the staff to figure out that hot chick peas did not belong on the dish and that the kitchen had made a mistake and it's actually outlined wrong for the kitchen in the back on how to make it or something. They initially wanted to explain it and not fix it even though, it was actually incorrect and didn't match the menu description. They finally remade it with the right ingredients and it was enjoyable. Again, it just feel like it took a little long to acknowledge the mistake and correct it. Do I get the 20% tip back? I had even told the cashier when I was ordering that I was glad about the 20% tip inclusion but, I didn't expect to be gaslit at both places - the beer garden and the cafe, when the orders were incorrect. Excellent way to use an old building! Schoolyard Beer Garden sits upon the once famed Evan's School House, constructed in the early 1900s. This teacher loves a good historic school building and the history behind it is really cool. The Schoolyard keeps with the school theme and has divided up the inside into several businesses with one large food/beverage hall at the center. The variety of food options is excellent- American and Mediterranean cuisine unite. Cheese curds are amazing and plentiful. Prices are very reasonable for a downtown Denver affair. Their beverages are well thought out too with happy hours occurring daily. Obviously, the beer garden is in the title, so lots of beer choices as well. You order on a tab like situation and cash out at the end of the night. There is an automatic 20% gratuity added FYI. Trivia night on Thursdays is also a good time- sponsored by Geeks who Drink. This place is SO cool. It is an old repurposed indoor school and there's many businesses inside but the main ones are the beer garden and the cafe. They both have many food and drink options and a lot of seating both inside and out. My partner and I spent some time walking around the inside to see what it looked like and it was so cool to see all the functional space to either just eat or work or hang out with friends. We sat outside and the outdoor seating was amazing, especially for a really nice sunny day. For food we had the gyro and a beer brat. I really liked the beer brat but the gyro I probably would not get again. It was a good portion but it was just kind of messy and I've had better gyros out there. For drinks, my partner had a beer and I had two cocktails which both were equally well done. I was so excited to find this place and want to invite my friends for a evening of drinks or to bring some board games and to hang out. This place is right by my yoga studio and I must've passed by it so many times without having any idea what was inside. It's so cool that it is a repurposed school made into a place with food and drink stalls. It reminds me of Ivy wild in Colorado Springs, but has more charm because it is located so close to downtown Denver. You order at the counter for food and drink drinks and see yourself and go pick up your food when your buzzer goes off. Giant pretzel with mustard and brat hit the spot. No need to go downtown or find a cool spot. Located in Capitol Hill district. We felt safe walking around there at night. Overall, the vibes are immaculate! It's so charming and cool that it used to be a school and has been renovated into a community center with various businesses, a cafe, and a restaurant! It's pretty nice that it's dog-friendly, and the menu options were good (had gluten-free alternatives). I went this second time on a sunny day, and the patio was so nice to hang out and eat on. The service was decent/good. The parking isn't the best, though (the nearby parking lot is $5 for 2 hrs, or nearby street parking). I wish it were free, but realistically, that's not feasible for being in the city. Overall will continue coming back for brunch/lunch and especially in the summer with my pooch! read more

Schoolyard Beer Garden is a super neat and unique spot located within the cool and hip Capital Hill neighborhood and used to be a school hence the name. It is definitely a cool place to check out if you've never been there before. There were a few downfalls though that weren't dealbreakers. The drinks were decent with a good selection of different brewerys' beers. They also had a decent cocktail/mocktail menu given that it is a beer garden. I got the margarita and although it was ok-tasting it just came from a premixed batch. I would think that a premixed batch margarita would be cheaper than a normal margarita made in front of me from another bar but it was similarly-priced. Plus the automatic 20% service charge added to all tabs, although becoming more and more the norm, was irritating especially when the bartender was too busy chatting and watching football. Overall, I would come here once just to check it out as it really is a unique spot but would hesitate to go back when there are other options around. read more

I decided to try here after visiting the cafe two nights prior. It's a very interesting location having been converted from an old school. Employees seem friendly and were able to answer questions I had. Coming here midday on a weekday really exemplifies how large of a space they have access to. When I previously visited it was relatively packed and it seems to be a much lighter crowd, though still lively, at 2 on a Monday. Apparently they have events and specials planned through the week including mahjong, a book club, and longer happy hours among other things. Anyway, I got a cuban sandwich with a side of fries. The simplicity of both goes a long way and allows the quality to shine through. The fries, oddly enough, are notably good. The cuban is mostly standard, in perfectly positive way that is. I think i might ask for slightly less of the dijon aioli next time but I see this as purely preference. The bread also is a good choice for the sandwich and the portion size overall left me with half a sandwich to bring home. What a fun use of an older space! I stopped in before the chalk art festival and had some drinks while we waited for artists to get a little more done (the rain really messed things up for them.) The place is spacious with a few spots inside for food, drinks and snacks. There was seating both indoors and outdoors. We had our drinks pretty quickly and sat at a table outside and people watched. Starting with the cons this time -- adding a 20% gratuity, not even 15%, for what service? Bussers, I guess? And sure, bartenders who pour the drinks, probably the cooks, too? But no one knows, we aren't informed exactly where the added tips go. For the most part, I don't agree with this. As a former server, I had to spend HOURS with customers and dealing with their every little need, and at times attitudes, to earn my tip usually between 15-20%, not always 20 and rarely added unless it was a party of 8 or more. It's like a TAX at this point more than it is a fee we pay for "Good Service" regardless if "Good Service" was provided or not. I think it's unwarranted and people should be able to determine their own gratuity. From what I have always understood, gratuity is never required. I cannot legally leave an establishment without paying for food, drink, and tax. But, legally, I can leave an establishment without paying a gratuity (I'm not talking what's wrong vs right morally, I'm talking what's lawful). As more and more places add gratuity, it is often lessor service, takes the control away from a customers' own money & how much of their money they want to give out, and we also have less ability to know where all the tips go or even having an option and deicison to exclude tipping gratuity through a credit card versus handing a server cash, if that's what we want, it's our money and we should be able to decide. It's all just really weird where the service industry is headed and it's always at the detriment of the customer. The bussers are a bit too much at times! Please don't take or ask to take stuff that people are not done with drinking or eating. How is it not obvious the majority of the time? Twice, once me and once my friend, were asked "Are you done with that?" for cups that weren't empty... ummmm, no... I mean stuff is expensive, too, why would I not finish or not want it if it is still sitting in front of me with volume in it? And funny I rolled up the paper from some food I ate and left it on the end of the table and a different busser looked at me with an "Is this ok to take?" expression, lol, yes it's rolled up in a ball, it would be trash at that point. My fulleth cup, no. I think the bussers are really young and inexperienced and hopefully will get it over some period of time in their jobs. The inside where the bar and main restaurant are is SOOOO LOUD, if you want to have any type of conversation, this might be annoying. The hallway outside that area where they have tables is better. Outside is better, too, of course. I didn't make it to the cafe, I'll have to check that out next time. Outside there is quite the amount of seating, I bet it gets packed during nice days. There is not supposed to be smoking and some dude had like 3-4 cigarettes the time it took me to finish my food, drink a beer, and visit with a friend. Yuck!! I hope they get a little more observant of this (versus wait for someone to complain first) and simply tell the smokers that this is no smoking and direct them where to stand and hopefully not right to other tables even if they go to the sidewalk cause it may still blow in people's faces if the wind is going that way. It's really rude & nasty for many to have to smell other people's cigarette smoke in your face when you don't smoke. The beer options were ... ok. Nothing super exciting for me personally. I tried a couple IPAs and the cider I sampled was decent. Some of the drink prices are a bit high for this type of atmosphere. To eat, my friend and I split the Cubano sandwich and onion rings side. The sandwich was pretty good! I'd get it again. The onion rings weren't really greasy, so that was nice, I could've handled a couple more of them. The outside heaters weren't strong enough and I wish they blew some of the hot air outwards. We moved as close as we could to it on the bench and I barely felt the warmth at all. It's like they were barely even there, boo because I was cold on that damp day after a downpour. I'm glad there's finally a beer hall in the area! I hope I see more dogs next time :) read more

Having stereotypes about beer gardens and schoolyards (as a former educator and non-beer drinker), Schoolyard Beer Garden far surpassed my expectations on my first visit. I met a group of friends for trivia night. Housed in the Evans School, there is plenty of space to enjoy the many beers on tap, cocktails, and food from the beer garden or cafe. Definitely not your traditional cafeteria fare, slopped on a tray by staff in hairnets. This food was tasty and plentiful. I selected the poke bowl with the Sriracha mayo on the side. The veggies and tuna were all fresh, with just the right amount of rice. An order of cheese curds was split among our group of six, and we still had plenty left over, as it was a generous portion. The staff was very friendly and came around a few times, letting us know before each area closed for last call. Don't let your bad memories of school days deter you; stop by for a drink and nibble. You won't get sent to the principal's office at Schoolyard Beer Garden. read more

This is a great addition to golden triangle. Schoolyard has plenty of seating both outdoors and indoors. Pups are welcome outdoors. You order drinks and food inside and then can sit anywhere. All the times I've seen it, it has been packed! But again plenty of seating for all. There's also a cafe that serves coffee and cocktails connected. There's a great beer selection and food has sandwiches, burgers, apps, etc. Note that they automatically add a 20% tip to everything, so take that as you will when factoring in price. FINALLY this beer garden has opened in the neighborhood and it's lived up to its expectations in every way. There is plenty of seating outside, inside, and downstairs. Good for large parties and pets are allowed outside. You order food and drinks at the counter. There is an automatic 20% gratuity included on all bills. The food is pretty standard but there's a good variety: burgers, fries, sandwiches. Same with the beers, they have plenty on tap. The cafe area serves cocktails and coffee. This place is really cool! Coffee shop has fantastic coffee, and delicious pastries. No surprise there they are getting their pastries from Suzette, which is part of their restaurant group. Some of the best pastries in Denver if you ask me! Didn't try the beer garden, but it's the same as Lowry and Edgewater, and GVR so we already know it's good what really impressed me was the space they've converted this old school house into a great little coworker space not too loud, plenty of places to plug-in. My only complaint is a lot of the chairs are these tiny little barstools and they're not comfortable to sit on for very long. They also have other businesses there like a workout studio and a really awesome thrift shop that is curated so you're not just digging through old donations. Definitely add this place to your list if you work remotely, love, coffee, good beer, and tasty bites! read more

This is a cool space in the neighborhood with both indoor and outdoor options. The outdoor has a lot of umbrellas for the shade. I didn't realize it was a place without servers. So, you go order, go sit down outside, go back in when your food is ready, go back outside to sit, go back in if you want another drink.... And then you're paying an automatic 20% gratuity on that. Pay attention to where you order food, there are a lot of individual vendors inside or your food might be waiting for you at a different window. And for the love of all that is holy DON'T PARK IN THE EVANS NORTH LOT ADJACENT TO THE BUILDING. I got to my car when my parking expired and turned on the ignition but didn't actually drive out for another minute or so. They take a photo of you driving in and driving out so the timer starts before you park and goes until your tires leave the lot. No grace period for actually finding an empty spot, figuring out how to pay using their QR codes, or buckling in and leaving the lot. That was $92 on top of the $5.95 I paid for two hours of parking. We've visited Schoolyard Beer Garden several times for afternoon tea, drawn by its historic vibe and scenic patio. Unfortunately, one member of our group uses a transport chair--and the disabled entrance gate has never functioned properly. Each visit we've had to find an employee to manually open the ramp gate. We're always told the issue will be reported, yet nothing has changed. Today we passed by again--and the gate remains unusable. So, regrettably, we couldn't enjoy tea with the rest of the group. Accessibility isn't optional--it's a necessity. We sincerely hope management at Schoolyard Beer Garden will address this promptly so that all patrons, regardless of mobility, can enjoy this lovely space. read more

This place is perfection (in my opinion). The food is excellent, they have a huge drink menu and the building itself is historically stunning. I love that they have gratuity included and one tab that works throughout the whole space. They recently added more seating on the second level and it was so tastefully done. Very comfortable place to come with a group of friends. The patio is also enjoyable as well. It's my definite go to for out-of-town friends. read more

Absolutely love the amount of seating, the drink lists, and the food. This neighborhood has needed a good hang like this for a long long time! There's good parking nearby on the street because the other businesses have daytime hours. I really enjoyed my froze but everyone in our group was very happy because there were cocktails and good beer selection. We LOVED the small pizza sized pretzel and all the snacky foods we got. This will be our new happy hour for work for sure! read more

All so so good, will be back. The environment was wonderful (we sat outside with our dog, there were many dogs there which we loved) the staff was kind. But really, the food is so good. Only thing that bothered me was they had the best honey mustard... omg best I've ever had. But the way it was served was In an open bowl with a spoon and no shield over it. It was strange.
