This place was an absolute disappointment. I went up here for the Columbus Day festival and my last stop was to Scialo. The case was almost completely empty. I asked for 2 cannolis, 1 Sfogliatella, and 1 lobster tail. First they had NO Sfogliatellas (!!!!!!) and they don't make lobster tails. So I went ahead and paid for the 2 cannolis and 1 package of wine biscuits (there were 6 in a day package). It cost me $14.00 which I think was incredibly high for cannolis that were subpar. Before went left we ended up stopping at another place where we ordered 2 Sfogliatellas, 1 lobster tail, 1 cannoli and 2 iced lattes for $19.00. I ended up throwing out everything I bought from this bakery. It was a waste of money. Never ever will I guess back to this bakery again. read more

This place has the best baked goods in Providence, hands down, and has been in business and run by the same family (the Scialos, duh) for 70 or 80 years. There are a lot of Italian-themed pastries, but the store is mostly bakery "standards" (cakes, breads, eclairs, brownies, etc). It can get a bit pricey (9" double-layer cake is $35), but its worth every cent. We came to PVD from NYC and this is the only place that we've found that rises to the standards set by some of our favorites in metro New York. For the ultimate feast, go down the street to Venda Ravioli for dinner supplies (homemade pastas, sauces, etc) and then to Scialo's for dessert. My wife has a discerning sweet tooth and birthday cake from Scialo's is the only thing that will suffice. Others seem to have had trouble with the staff and/or with travelling with the food, but don't be swayed - this place is amazing if you are looking for top-notch bakery items. read more

Based on two visits. Five stars at the top of its category. Four if you prefer lots of butter, cream, and high-end patisserie to this style. Even the things that look dry and cakey are moist and lighter than you'd expect. Great selection of pound cakes in traditional flavors like lemon poppyseed or plain. Don't change! The round candy windows at the front hold the exact kinds of things you'd see in a similar spot in Italy. Take in the decor - simple and elegant. Unbelievable!! Best cake bakery in RI! The staff was very patient and accommodating with our uncertainty of choosing a cake and design. We combined a few ideas from two different cakes to decide on a design which they transformed into the outstanding masterpiece pictured. The yellow cake with chocolate frosting was a hit with all. The cake was flavorful, moist and unbelievably light and rich at the same time. The chocolate filling was the perfect amount. Had a cake done for my son's graduation. The cake was really good and everyone liked it. The only problem I had with the cake is that I specifically asked that the colors of the cake be white and purple. When I saw the cake, they used blue instead of purple and blue is not the school color! I was pretty upset. The cake lost the WOW factor after that. read more

I asked a staff member at the Renaissance Hotel where to get the best pastry in the city. I was told Scialo Brothers located in the Federal Hill section of Providence. Well, I normally like scialo's but this morning sort of irked me quite a bit. My husband and I went in for a cupcake, a coworker's birthday, and a brownie. After being told that a box would be a bad idea because the cupcake would rattle around, the older woman behind the counter wrapped the whole thing in wax paper and plopped it on its side in a paper bag. I understand that bags are cheaper than boxes and saving money is the aim of a lot of business. But, now I have an ugly as f*** cupcake to give to a woman who had a funeral and a birthday in the same weekend. Awesome. Just awesome customer disservice. read more

Ordered a apple turnover and it wasn't anything special. Flavorless crust and overly sweet filing. Something you could get at stop and shop bakery for cheaper. This is your grandma's bakery. I am not from the Providence area but I was visiting for the air show. One of our pilots was turning thirty and I need to get him a birthday cake. He had a super weird request of a strawberry cake. After calling around to a couple people I found this place that was 1) open on a Sunday 2) had a strawberry cake and 3) was willing to have it ready in just an hour and a half. This place could accomplish all three and produced the most delicious strawberry shortcake I've ever seen. Not only that, the whole thing cost me just $22. I've been going to this bakery for 30 years. I moved away 6 years ago, but was in town and HAD to make the trip to "the hill" to get zeppoles pepper bread sticks, and the unique pizza strip. One bite and I go back to the day 30'years ago when I was on a gastro tour of Federal Hill through RISD. And they took us upstairs at Scialo to show us the ovens where the bread was baked, and the third floor where all the cakes were made. The interior screams "old-school Italian bakery," which is exactly what Scialo Bros is. I ordered a slice of the lemon pie and savored every bit of it; when I had finished eating, I was tempted to return to the bakery and buy an entire pie. The custard-like filling was the perfect balance of tart and sweet, and the blackberries on top were an ideal finishing touch. If you stop in and enjoy lemon, order a slice. Stopped in today after being turned away at multiple other bakeries due to them running out of items :( but Scialo Bros was still stocked and I'm so happy I tried them out! They're located in a cute spot in Little Italy with such friendly staff. The inside is beautifully decorated with a lovely display for their pastries. I got 2 cupcakes and a large Eclair. Anytime I find myself on or around Atwells Ave, I HAVE to stop at Scailo Bro's. I can't get enough of it. Everything they bake and make at this bakery is top notch. I have yet to try everything, but I'm working towards that goal. My ultimate favorite is their Almond Joy. Yes, it's the same idea as the main stream candy bar but it's done Scailo style: huge, fresh coconut, a fantastic chocolate coating, and did I mention HUGE? The original store on Federal Hill is walk in time to a more a gracious age of bake shops. They have beautiful old style Italian pastries. It's a great place for custom birthday cakes too. Thank you for ruining my 21st birthday party. I had written confirmation that my cake was going to be ready for 1pm. Yet when I showed up they had no cake, they were extremely rude and offered no solution to me not having a cake. I'm extremely disappointed and only turn 21 once in my life and the party was based around this cake. We stopped here this past weekend to pick up some after dinner goodies. I have to say, the Apricot Almond tart cake was TO DIE FOR. I could have eaten almost half the cake in one sitting, and I had to really restrain myself not to do so! (well, I have a thing for almond flavor anything, so....) I also tried their Raspberry Linzer tart (which is another bakery item that I seem to always gravitate towards) and it was DELISH - OUS! My son also thoroughly enjoyed his brownie. I will be back again... and again... and again.. just to get that apricot almond cake! Only tried the chocolate cupcake with the chocolate butter cream frosting. Esthetically, the cupcake was very nice looking. One bite into it, I removed the terrible tasting frosting and finished the chocolate cake. The cake portion of the cupcake was moist and had great flavor but the butter cream left an aftertaste that tasted more of Crisco than chocolate. All-in-all I will give them another try but won't go back for the cupcakes. read more

I settled for this place since the bakery I intended to visit was closed for some strange reason. I intended to get bread, but not everyone knows how to make my idea of good bread, so I got a pizza slice to sample the dough skills. Mediocre. Not what you would expect from a bakery as far as taste and texture (but I loved the price) so I decided to skip on the bread today. I've already got a few amazing places that make amazing bread and this pizza strip didn't even hold a candle...... I decided to get some cake- I figure if the bread skills aren't up to par, then maybe this place has amazing cakes. The cannoli's looked bad, based purely on looks. I wouldn't even attempt to sample-some things you can just tell by looking. Despite being morning time, they look as if they've been sitting around too long. My tastebuds are only interested in very fresh cannoli's so maybe I'll try one when it is a busier day. However, the cakes looked amazing, and so did the pies and pastries. I got the chocolate raspberry cheesecake torte......it is to die for! I want it for my birthday cake. The chocolate cake is perfectly moist, the cheesecake is creamy and light and the chocolate icing is thick and rich. It is easily the best rendition I've had in rhode island. I got the cassata cake too. I love almond and rum, so I found it delicious...but I won't be back for it. I like my cassata with candied fruit and a whipped topping, which was not present. The filling was smooth, however the marzipan was too heavy on the almond. For me, it was okay. Each sponge cake layer was executed very well, and the ingrediants are very rich so I'll probably be back in about a week for more cake and a tart or pie. The russian tea cake, the carrot cake, the blackberry cheesecake, and the Sfogliatelle are on my hit list. They look absolutly perfectly executed. These things I can just tell by looking. The eclair looked pretty good as well...I'll definately be back, but not for the bread. cake is around 4 bucks a slice. Also, the ladies working here are sooooooooooo sweet and nice to customers...I heard them getting into it in the back room, but you would never know it by the way they treated me! So I am satisfied with the service too. This is my new cake spot. read more

Pastiche (our primary choice) wasn't open on a Monday evening so we settled with Scialos for our Rhode Island canoli craving. Their $3.25 canoli did not quite make the cut. The coating was stale and the filling was average at best. We wanted to get the smaller canoli to try out different options since we were in Providence for the first time from the west coast, but they said we had to buy a dozen if we wanted to try them out. This bakery has a lot of unique pastries such as a "hummingbird" fruit cake and a jimmy cake. The uniqueness of the pastries tends to make my visits to Scialo a hit or miss. I'd recommend sticking to the more traditional items, such as the sugar cookie with chocolate chips. Their buttercream is very buttery. read more

Sometimes I want old school bakery (this is a good thing) classic, nothing crazy, solid, devious, yummy, straight up, moist cupcakes. Sometimes I don't want the out there (but often yummy favors) I want vanilla/vanilla. These were great, just what I was looking for (I'm still missing Lyndell's up in Boston / Somervile which will always be my fave.). For my husband who likes cupcakes but isn't as obsessed as me, got a fruit tart (don't put fruit in my desserts- it's not dessert if there's fruit in it- don't get me started on this "carrot cake" item... He was happy - not too sweet which is what he likes.
