Scialo is my go-to place every time I find myself with a new girlfriend. For around 20 bucks you can get 8-10 desserts to bring to her parents when you go over their house. Not just any desserts either, but high quality homemade stuff (bonus points if she is from an Italian family because her parents will recognize them on top of it) at a dirt cheap price. This option could only be beaten by bringing 8-10 slices of cake from Pastiche...but that would require 200 bucks, which I certainly don't have the money for. So this is a much better option. Scialos is a wonderful bakery that offers exquisite pastries, cakes and breads. I frequent them regularly and I live nearby many good bakeries. They do pretty much everything well. I do like Buonos for bread a little better and Sals for dough but for cakes and pastries they are perfectly delectable. I am yet to have anything of poor quality from this place...from pound cake to canoli to cookies to chocolate or Almond cake or zuppa englaze its all good. Very traditional Italian Bakery and Pastry shop. I dont know how you couldnt give Scialo's ATLEAST 4 stars! Either you dont know or your nutz. read more

The other day I was watching lidia bastianich on TV and she visited this old school bakery in Providence, Rhode Island. Well my sister and I decided to take a pit stop on our way to Boston and we were a little disappointed about the city. But that is another story. So we figured that we park our car and just look around. When we walked into the bakery, there were only a few people on line. As we waited, I saw all the pastries and cookies. Now I had a hard decision to make, but my sister knew what she wanted. So as we approached the counter, my sister asked if they had any sfogliatelle and the lady said no. Now that was disappointing because that what she was looking forward to have. However, she understood and didn't get anything. Although they didn't have what she wanted, I got a pear tart with almond paste. It was a little pricey but worth the money. It was so delicious and the pastry was so fresh. I have been eating cannoli pastries since I was a child when my Italian grandfather used to buy them at top NYC Italian Bakeries. When I found Scialo's Bakery 14 years ago, I was delighted to taste an authentic cannoli again and could never leave Providence without stopping at Scialo's for cannoli and biscotti pastries. On St Patrick's day, we bought a box of pastries, including 3 cannoli to eat while visiting a friend on Federal Hill. The cannoli looked fantastic with the typical sliced almonds and chocolate chips flanking the ends. But, as soon as I picked up the cannoli, I could feel something was off because it was very light weight, not the typical full bodied feel. Well, that was immediately explained as the filling in the cannoli consisted of pure white fluffy aerated cream puff style filling !! Oh no, the baker used the wrong pastry bag and accidentally filled the cannoli with the incorrect filling. That was SO disappointing. All three of us realized our cannoli were incorrectly made because the filling was pure white and had no chocolate chips in the filling and lacked that rich heavy creamy sweet flavor in the filling. I decided to call the bakery and initially complimented their cannolis of the past, and then I calmly let her know our experience, without accusations or being angry in the slightest way. The woman who answered the phone got very defensive and rattled off the cannoli filling ingredients in an indignant fashion. I explained the color, texture and taste of the cream puff filling as I wondered aloud if someone accidentally used the wrong pastry bag to fill the cannoli. This angered the woman and again she insisted they did not change the recipe. I did not call to argue, but to inform the bakery that there was a mistake made when filling their last batch of cannoli pastries. But, she was not hearing any of it, so I thanked her for not listening and I hung up. I will add that we also bought a slice of cheesecake and an apple turnover, both of which were totally unappetizing and dried out. It appears that the quality of the baked goods are not up to the high standards of the past. Maybe it was a fluke. But, I do know, for absolute certainty, the difference between cannoli filling and cream puff filling as they are worlds apart in color, texture and flavor. I was not as nearly upset over the filling mistake as I was with the way the woman who answered the call was totally rude and unwavering about the mistake. The cake we got for my son's baptism on July 9, 2011 was, by far, one of the best cakes I've ever eaten. The cake was light and moist and teh cutter cream frosting was super tasty. Scialo Bros. did a great job on design as well. I brought in three photos that I found online and asked them to incorporate design items from each into one cake. The did exactly what I wanted and it looked fabulous!! The cake was a classic marble cake with chocolate butter cream between the layers and white buttercream on the outside of the cake. They cerated a beautiful cross graphic for the top of the cake per a photo I brought them. I'm so happy and would absolutely use them again. read more

This bakery located in historic Federal Hill is what I really pictured an old fashioned bakery to be. Huge pound cakes & Italian cookies, wine biscuits, pepper biscuits, all the great traditional desserts my grandmother used to make. I have to say I am disappointed with Scialo Bakery. I have frequent the bakery since I was a little girl, however, my last 3 visits to the bakery left me in disappointment. The first time back, I went to buy a baguette stick at around 5/6pm only to realize the bread was as hard as a rock. I ended up not purchasing the bread. I recommend going to the bakery early in the morning when the bread is fresh and be sure to feel the bread for freshness before walking out the bakery with your purchase. The second time I went to the bakery, I asked to pre-order a cake for the next day only to be declined. I was not given further instructions on how to pre-order for the future as I do realize a day may be too short of a notice. I was only told "we do not do pre-ordering". I ended up buying some almond biscotti that were hmmm "surprisingly" hard and dry at a price of $1 a piece and were literally the size of my thumb. I should have learned my lesson. My third time back I purchased a small fruit bread which measures 6" in diameter and 2" in height for the impressive price of $30 and a stick of Nougat Candy which costs well over $20 as it was $20/lbs. Overpriced much?!?!!! There were no price labels anywhere! I could not help but feel RIPPED OFF when I was given the total. I have been to my share of well known bakeries as I am a pastry fanatic and have never felt as ripped off as I did at Scialo...seeing how it has moved me to write this review. Hopefully things will shape up for this bakery in the future as I would like to one day support this small business again, but for now I will be on hiatus for a very long time or maybe until I forget how upset I am. Beautiful cakes in the window caught our eye so we stopped in to pick up some treats to take home. Everything looked wonderful and the young ladies at the counter were great. They have a nice system of letting the customer pick out their items as they put them on a tray. When you're done, they take them to a back table to box them up! Took a detour on our road trip to get torrone per reviews. Unfortunately they only make it in fall and winter. But what pleasant surprise to find a variety of baked goods such as date bars and pear pie that I normally don't see at other bakeries. Of course I had to try these and they were delicious! I write this with mixed feelings. Scialo is always an instant stop when I am shopping on the Hill but I recently had an experience which left a very bad taste in my mouth. On Valentines Day, we went in to buy desserts and were greeted by an older women at the counter. It was busy and I could see she was a bit stressed. As we ordered a pie, she asked if that was all we wanted which we said yes. As she boxed it we saw a yummy chocolate cream pie and told her we would actually take one of those as well. While you would think most restaurants wuold be happy with a sale in this economy, she said "YOU SAID YOU WERE ALL SET!". She stormed off and reboxed and came back with another snappy comment. If we did not want dessert so bad, we would have left. The desserts were great but I may opt for Pastiche next time where the service is impeccable and the desserts great. read more

I have had received pretty good services and products out of this bakery in the past. Ordered a birthday cake for my sister's birthday. They suggested Almond Cake, which i took into consideration. The cake was horrible, and seemed and tasted stale. Nobody who attended the party liked the cake at all, had to throw the rest of the cake. Never going back to this bakery again. read more

I walked in off the street without an appointment and asked when would be good to come in for a possible wedding cake tasting. Even though there was a line to the door, they ushered my sister, mother, and I in and showed us their cake books, gave us a tour of the facility, and sat down to discuss our options. They even have styrofoam cake layers to put together to decide what your full-scale cake could look like. They give you straightforward, reasonable prices and are open to design choices. Extremely helpful and kind. They also sent us home with a box of nine cupcakes in several flavors--all of which were amazing! That sold us. I'm not normally a big chocolate fan, but their is absolutely fantastic. Yum! Our wedding cake was beautiful and delicious. I go to this bakery as often as I possibly can. Anyone that thinks this a bad bakery didn't try enough things. I, however, have tried almost everything. Cannolis fresh and crunchy and are "REAL" cannolis, carrot cake that is just the best, bread that is most amazing, lemon tarts that are so divine...my mouth is watering thinking about them. I see it doesn't have a five-star average on Yelp, but it surely does for me. I can't find a bakery in Rhode Island that compares to it. The aroma alone of almonds and baked bread knocks you over. Always a little crowd in there. Just get everything...you'll come up with several favorites. All I know is that if you ever had italian pastry (the real italian pastry), you will be very happy to have gone to Scialo's Bakery. When you walk into this bakery, the first thing you should do is inhale, the smell of the baked goods is heavenly. The cakes are amazing, they have many Italian specialties also, such as the biscotti and the ricotta pie. Although they were filled to order, we weren't too thrilled with the cannoli. The filling tasted of shortening, not the sweet creamy/cheesy ricotta taste we expect from really good cannoli. The pastry was crispy but bland,not sweet at all. The staff were all very friendly and helpful even though it was a busy Saturday morning. The clown cake in the window was kinda creepy though. read more

I can only comment on one pastry, because it is the only thing that I have ever had in 35 years. The rainbow pound cake is worth me driving from north of Boston to Providence because I have never had anything that compares to how wonderful this cake is. Their Italian bread is delicious...my Dad always says it's the Providence water that makes the bread crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. If everything else is half as good as the rainbow cake then it is excellent. read more
