Believe the bad reviews!!! I made an appointment for my son mostly because it's a couple blocks away from where he lives. I made an appointment for a full service haircut and style, shampoo and conditioning treatment (45 min) for $58 and also the facial hair trim which it says shapes the beard with electric trimmers (15 minutes) $32. There was no conditioning treatment for the hair. The hair cut wasn't bad but they didn't even it up in the back. In addition, you can see how my son's neck looks. When I asked them to clean it up they said that would involve a razor and would cost me more. He's had his beard trimmed dozens of times with the electric trimmer and it has always looked nice and neat. The whole affair took 15 minutes. It was $97 for this terrible mess and yes, I know this is DC, but still, that's a lot of money. All in all, a terrible place.

I'm a member at S&S, and I love it here! I always go to Deyon, who does a great job. A few things to know: -You can get an individual haircut service, of course, but the membership is a better value if you want to get a cut every few weeks. I have the every three weeks plan. I'll detail how the plans and everything work below. -There are four flavors of haircut: The Buzz Cut, 10 Year, 15 Year, and 25 Year. I'm on the 10 Year plan, which includes a full haircut, shampoo and conditioning, hot towel, and back of the neck shave. If you want more of a pampering experience, the 15 Year adds a scalp massage and face refresher, and then there's the top of the line 25 Year, which adds a paraffin wax hand dip and scalp/back/shoulder massage. I got the 25 Year once and it is really nice! Kind of like a spa experience. There's also the Buzz Cut, which is pretty much what it sounds like. -The Bar: Yes, there is an actual bar here--not like a few cocktails, but a bar. They have a great drink menu, and obviously given the name of the place, there is a focus on scotch and whiskey. I've enjoyed trying all sorts of different whiskeys and bourbons, and I try to get a different drink each time. The memberships include a cocktail with every service. There are currently 19 cocktails on the menu, and the bar tram will also make you a custom drink if you want (highly recommended). -In between: In between services, which are offered every 2, 3, or 4 weeks depending on your membership, you also get unlimited cleanups/edge ups. This is a perfect quick little service when you want to get your hairline right but don't really need a full haircut. I normally get a cleanup every week and a half. -The staff: Everyone is super cool, from Shawn at the front to everyone cutting. -Pandemic precautions: The bar seating is closed due to the pandemic, and they enforce social distancing in the bar table area. I am fully vaccinated and feel very comfortable here. If you're looking for the cheapest haircut in town, this isn't it, but that's not what it's trying to be. I value the online appointments because of my schedule, and they even have an app. I pretty much have subscriptions to everything else in my life, so the membership was an easy option. Scissors & Scotch, I hope y'all are here to stay!

Didn't listen to the request about length. Door greeter Kai is a little stand off-ish. Definitely don't recommend.

Outside of a few one-offs when he was out - all of whom did a phenomenal job (thanks Deyon, Lareesa and Dan!) - I began working exclusively with Joe.

The vibes are immaculate--everyone was nice, funny, and welcoming. I came in for my usual gray coverage, and they did a GREAT job with the color. Unfortunately, the haircut was a very different experience. I showed the stylist a reference photo of my usual longer, layered cut. She said she wanted to even out my hair, which sounded completely reasonable, but she removed several inches without confirming how much length I was comfortable losing. I left with a short, rounded, mushroom-shaped bob that looked nothing like the reference and made my face look much rounder than I wanted. I was so mortified that I took a photo outside and sent it to my longtime stylist in Southern California, who replied, "whoa." I'm leaving three stars because the staff and atmosphere were lovely and the color was excellent. But I really hope the salon encourages clearer communication before making a major change in length. In the meantime, I'll be wearing a ponytail until it grows out.

After trying for over 3 weeks to get on her schedule for a 2nd color follow up I finally got an appointment. When I sat down we had a discussion and Jessica asked me if i wanted my roots or whole head dyed. Jessica told me on my FIRST visit I'd only have to get my roots touched up moving forward but she has never dyed only my roots. Everytime she has dyed my entire hair. So I asked her why she keeps doing that because it's not what we discussed initially, she said that she has to do that in order to match the color or she can just try to guess the color my ends were and try to match my roots to the ends. I said ok just do the whole head. She immediately said well I only have time to do the roots. I asked her why she gave me an option if she knew she didn't have time then I just immediately agreed to her doing just the roots even though she was going to guess the color. She stepped away for 15mins after combing out my naturally curly hair with a PADDLE brush. When she returned she said she was uncomfortable doing my hair today because our conversation was too much for her- she did almost ALL of the talking, there were no vulgar or derogatory words exchanged, no one yelled or screamed. We literally had a calm flat conversation. She didn't even brush my hair back into the bun it was in when I came in. I had to put it back up myself even tho I came in curly and she combed out all my curls. I stepped outside and came back inside and asked her when she could do my hair and she told me I need to find someone else. I called the salon and asked for the color she just had to have written down at some pint in my multiple appointments with her so I could find someone else to do it since she refused to do my hair- they put me on hold for 18mins then hung up on me. I called for the salon manager of course they put me on hold and hung up on me AGAIN.

The other staff were nice too. They all greeted is and would check to see if we were doing OK. The shop has a nice set up with a touch of that old school barber shop vintage feel. I highly recommend you go here. AND if your looking for a new barber ask for Ken he did an amazing job. I mean who can please 2 tween boys with no complaints. I think I heard him telling the kids about some football players who come to him for their hair too. I can totally see why they would. All in all a great experience all around. I came in asking for grey…read morehighlights and despite her bleaching my hair 2x it came out more of an ashy brown (which I was fine with). She did a great job on the bleaching and it's not damaged at all. The main gripe I have is that the dye she put on top washed out after one wash with purple shampoo, something that had never happened to me before when I had gotten my hair balayaged elsewhere in the past (nor when I'd gotten it toned every two months). She'd recommended using overtone conditioner--unfortunately, the silver overtone conditioner did nothing except give my hair a green twinge (looks a lot like hay currently.) When I panicked and told Doan about this she was kind and offered me useful advice--clarifying shampoo, which I hadn't thought about--and relayed the brand of dye she used so I wouldn't have an alternative salon use it on me in the future. Sadly, only two weeks after getting my hair done I'm going to have to go somewhere else to get it fixed, hence the three stars. :(
