GABY!! The "Mother Plucker" as she likes to call herself is a rare and delightful find! I've been to several different waxing places in the area and I can tell you that she's TOPS! Gaby works out of a clean, private little room next to the register at Scissors, that hair salon you drive past every day on Main Street. Her facials are exquisite, her manner is like a good friend (who came from Germany many years ago). She giggles and works quickly and efficiently. My brows have never been more lovely! My chin is a baby's bottom. My white heads are gone (after the obligatory redness for 2 days). Every time I go in there I feel like I've been somewhere special. It's kind of homey and not 'stuck up'. This salon is perfect! I had the best cut, best color and best brows Ive ever had! The cut by the owner was fabulous and the color was meticulous and the best Ive ever had in SF bay area or LA. To find all this talent in one place that feels like being at home with friends is unheard of. The staff treated me like I was the only client there and spent lots of time on my hair not playing beat the clock like most salons. I have told all my friends about this salon. Noelle is so nice and talking to her was a very pleasant experience. You know that's super important when you're getting a Brazilian. I like to be told jokes so that I laugh instead of cry. While she achieved that, there were a few things that I didn't like: 1) She double-dips. I think she used the same stick the whole time. 2) Her wax was super-hot. She tried to blow on it to cool it down but it still burned at times. 3) Right before she yanked each muslin strip, she changed her stance and "got ready." I really wished she could've just waxed as we were having a conversation. Every time she got into her ready stance, I got nervous. 4) All of the above bothered me but the worst was at the end. She was really nice and sprayed hydrogen peroxide and put something else on me. But she didn't just stop there. She kept doing stuff and when I finally asked her what she was doing, she told me she was drawing a heart. "It's cute because I like to be cute," she said. Um, I was kind of in shock. She left the room to let me get dressed and what I saw was body glitter and a pink heart in the area that she had just waxed. Really? Wow! What an amazing experience! BELLA DONNA MAE IS THE BOMB! Donna Mae just started working at Scissors Salon at Main St, Santa Monica as the new Aesthetician and did an outstanding job on my face. First of all, Donna Mae has a wonderful, caring and motherly personality that makes one feel at home immediately. She welcomed me into her room that smelled like essential oils and looked so cozy; there even was a fireplace. As far as the facial goes, Donna Mae used REAL fresh rosemary and organic lemons to clean my face naturally. I enjoyed the smells and the fact that there were no harsh chemicals used. Also, she did not squeeze my face, but used a flat vibrating device that gently pushed blackheads and dirt out of my pores. I loved how soft and smooth my face felt after. It was impressive too that I did not leave with redness on my skin. Such a gentle way of doing this. I'm a fan! Donna Mae has some serious massaging skills!! Man, when she gave me that neck & head massage I just could not stop smiling :-) At the end of the treatment (I got the 90 minutes one) I got a Vitamin C mask that was put all over my face, chest area, and even my hands. My skin tightened dramatically, and the feedback from my friend was raging: "Wow, your skin is glowing", and "You look so young". I will absolutely be back and cannot stop looking in the mirror. One of the most bizarre experiences. Kim was not communicating in layman's terms, did not offer a quality wash/cut/blow and thinned my hair so much it will take months to recover. He kept shaping my hair with his hands to start, stepping back and asking, you see, as if I had any idea what he was talking about. When I said I didn't understand what he was expecting from me, and that I just came in for a normal haircut, he said he was not a cutter, he was an artist. At one point when he stepped back, he paused expectantly and said most customers were smiling at that point, which I definitely was not. When he started cutting, waving the scissors about with a flourish rather than measuring what he was doing, I asked if he was going to wash my hair, which he replied washing damages the hair. As he already started I felt a bit trapped. Eventually I said I was told on the phone when I made the appt. that I would get a wash, cut and blow and asked if that was still going to happen. He said if that's what I wanted, he would. Once he was done cutting (a lot of my hair) off he washed it and went into an ordeal with the blow dry, leaving various round bristle brushes in my hair at any given time and using two hair dryers. I just wanted it to be over. My hair is fine, and now the overall hair is very thin and lacks body. I don't understand the positive reviews, as there was no care or precision in the cutting of my hair. Plus the salon itself (equipment, furnishings) is very dated and unkempt (the chair I was told to sit on had the previous persons cut hairs all over; I got a tissue and wiped it down myself). read more

A couple years ago, I got a bad haircut from a stylist in Northern California and dropped in to Scissors Salon on a trip to visit friends and family in Santa Monica, CA, to see if someone could fix my cut. On the basis of this experience, I now wait 4-5 months to get my hair cut by Michael at Scissors Salon whenever I can make it down to Southern California. Here are three reasons why he's worth the wait for me... 1. Michael listens to what I want and then gives me the exact cut I request (He's given me a few different cuts). 2. He is an absolute perfectionist who takes time to cut my hair with exacting precision and then flips it around to every conceivable angle to make sure it lays well no matter how the wind blows. 3. Interpersonally, he's entertaining and a bit zany in a good way. For instance, he shared with me a delightful poem he wrote about his beloved Doberman Pinscher, Clyde. I've only had one experience with brow shaping by Noelle, but it was also a positive experience that is worth a mention. read more

I love these guys! My partner had been going to them for twenty five years when we met and he said, "You've got to go". So I did, and I keep going back. Everytime I leave I look gorgeous! Sebastian does my color and Robbie does my cut. The new stylist, Shannon, has filled in for them both and she does a great job. ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC! DO NOT GO HERE! I made an appointment with one of their hairdressers, James, and had the most unpleasant experience ever. Firstly he had double booked me for my appointment. Rather than reschedule he cut myself and another client's hair simultaneously. The original haircut was on a Thursday and the next day I called to let him know that I wanted one of the sides fixed because it was a bit jagged and uneven. I had to leave a message because he didn't pick up. His response??? He called me that Sunday several times and left me several text messages telling me that I was stupid and that my haircut did not need to be fixed. "It was perfect" in his words and continued that "I am a master hairdresser. I am a genius." Was that it? I wish. He continued to leave me messages and texts calling me everything from an "A$$hole" to a "Homosexual". And if that was not enough, he called my wife, also a client of his, and harassed her several times throughout the day, 22 times to be exact. My wife is British and his voicemails and texts included racial abuse about her nationality as well as a threatening message because she had replied asking him to stop harassing her. We had to call our phone company and have his number blocked because of the consistent phone calls. I called the salon and complained to the manager, but I don't think that they really did anything at all as he is still working in the salon. read more

Best hair cuts and color EVER!

I've known Robbie and Michael for over 30 years and have never had a bad cut from either one of them. I no longer live at the beach (unfortunately) so getting to Scissors is a trek for me but worth it because I know I'm going to get a good cut. The atmosphere is very friendly and upbeat. You have a group of people how obviously enjoy working with each other. You can't help but feeling right at home. Be prepared to laugh a lot while you're there. read more

TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!! Save yourself the grief, go somewhere else!! Please don't let the high yelp score fool you like it did me. I would give it a zero if possible. I made an appointment with Robie. I told him I wanted a 'graduated bob' haircut. He 'seemed' to know what that is. I told him I was getting my head shots in a few days and that it is really important that it doesn't get cut too short. I've had this hairstyle for several years so I know what it looks like and how it is cut. Lots of layers in the back and a long A-line angle in front. It also takes a lot of time to get the layers and the look right. He was talking to anyone and everyone who walked by. Very easily distracted. He finished after about 15 minutes and a few snips and said "what do you think of that, I really like the angle" I agreed but wanted it all a bit shorter so that it would not grow out in 2 weeks. He became very impatient after that. He seemed offended and went into his own little world. He bluntly chopped off my hair into a straight bob, leaving some strands obviously longer than others. The back of my hair is 2-3 inches shorter than I told him I wanted! I specifically said "Do not cut is shorter than here!" The back looks like a blunt mushroom with one side more mangled than the other. Just terrible. Since it was obvious he just didn't understand what a graduated bob haircut is like, I just gave up, paid the $55(even tipped him) and left. He had already done enough damage. After I got home, I had to style my hair as well as cut it so the front and sides were at least even. I then had to pay more money to go to a different salon to fix the back and they were shocked and asked me "Did you cry over this haircut?" and " I want to go over and yell at them FOR you, this is unbelievable!" They managed to salvage it a little but once its gone, its gone. All they could do is smooth and even it out. Now this is where it gets a little ridiculous: I went back to Scissors today talk to him and see if anything could be done about this horrendous situation, like a refund maybe. Robie made me wait 20 minutes, and wouldn't let me talk to anyone else. I told him it was very uneven and I felt very taken advantage of. He was very rude right away and told me it was my fault my hair turned out like this(really? your the one with the scissors!) and for me to leave immediately. I asked to talk to the owner, he started to yell and called me a fool more than once and said he was the owner. He was stomping around the whole shop making a scene, drawing as much attention to himself as he could. I said that I want to talk to someone who is in charge or someone who isn't so angry. He said I was being stupid and that he will ignore me until I leave, that there is nothing left to do. I was crying at this point because he had corralled another hairstylist to gang up on me. I asked them "Don't you want to keep customer's happy?" they both shook their heads and replied "Not customers like you, GET OUT!" SO there you go, they don't want customers who care about what they look like. They don't want customers who tip. They don't want customers who can afford their prices. They don't want customers like me, your average young woman looking for a wonderful haircut and salon. They don't want polite people. They don't want customers who have an idea about what color or hairstyle they might want, instead they want to do their own thing and it is their way or the highway!! You just need to shut up and let them do what they feel like doing. Don't even think about speaking up, because then you'll be sorry. read more

I have been going to Scissor for 30+ years and have never left unhappy. Sometimes if they are super busy and I can't get in - I go elsewhere and am always disappointed. I have learned my lesson and will plan in advance and stick with Scissors. Robbie, Sebastian or Dennis have always given me a great cut. DO NOT go to this place! These people are unethical, rude, and downright dumb. I bought a voucher from one of the Groupon-like site for a wax. I call to make an appointment and they tell me I need to call back when the woman who does the waxing is there- so I call back a few days later. She tells me she is all booked up for a while so I need to call back in a few weeks to make an appointment. I tell her that in a few weeks the voucher will expire, but she says not to worry she will still honor it since she is booked until then. Very nice, no problem- I'll go somewhere else and use them next time. So I call back in a few weeks and find out she no longer works there, now there is a new lady who does that job- I need to call back when she is there. I call back and explain the story. She tells me that it's fine- she will honor the voucher since I already paid for it, but she is going on vacation and I need to call back in a few weeks. Sigh. OK. I call back in a few weeks and speak to the manager because the new wax lady is not there. I tell him the story, he says they will still honor the voucher, but the new waxing lady is in the hospital for a procedure, call back. When I call back the last time I am told that the new waxing lady (the one who was in the hospital) is no longer working there. So I explain the WHOLE situation to the guy on the phone, Michael, and tell him I'm really annoyed now. He asks me why I bought an expired voucher. What?! I explain the situation again and again he doesn't understand why I bought an expired voucher. Jesus. Finally I get through to this guy and he gets it but tells me he doesn't think they'll accept it if it's expired. I get very annoyed and he changes his tune and makes an appointment for me and tells me to just come in "and hopefully they will take the voucher". Fine, better than nothing. About 10 minutes later he calls me back and said he just spoke to the manager and won't take my voucher since it's expired. The same manager I had spoken to the month before! DO NOT GO HERE. And most definitely NEVER buy a voucher to use here. People should not be treated like this. Awful. read more

Just went into today for a men's Brazillian. Not sure if I got the same lady everyone else here is mentioning but yes she was super sweet but the brazillian waxing part was a nightmare! My complaints: 1) What I expected to be 15-20 minutes long was almost 2 hours 2) The strips used to peel off the wax were not prepared. A lot of time was wasted just me laying there waiting for her to cut some more strips as she went along. 3) At first the waxing was going well but later on there were a lot of places that were left kinda patchy and we had to go back to those areas to do them 4) Got wax on my leg 5) Pulled the wax wrong a few times. Instead of pulling from an angle it was pulled more straight up that really hurt especially on a really really sensitive area more than once if you know what I mean 6) I have some tweasing to do when I get home 7) I was given cotton balls with that oily stuff to clean myself. I still have some cotton on certain areas. 8) I feel a piece of wax still on me sticking to my skin and another one sticking to my underwear 9) This service should have been priced at maybe $30 MAX! 10) I'm still in pain 3 hours later in certain areas which is new. I never left a place still feeling in pain. In a nutshell I've tried waxing myself at home before and its been a sloppy and messy job. This was barely a notch better than that. The lady was super sweet though and I hate leaving bad comments but I really felt like I need to with this and I would never go back as it was the worst experience I ever had. She is far from a professional and I kinda had that feeling when I called already as there was a slight uncertainty coming from her voice. I should have trusted my instinct but I want to save a few bucks. read more

Have been going to Scissors for years. Sebastian does the best keratin and zero method straightening ever. Have Sebastian wash your hair... Heaven. Onto color. Sebastian is an artist. Today I went for a base coat, Sebastian told me that my highlights needed attention. I had not noticed that mine had faded but he did. He did them, gorgeous. Robbie is the master artisan hair cutter. He does beautiful styles on long and short hair. I love watching him craft beautiful cuts on women with short hair. Mine is long as is my daughters hair, he spends an age perfecting our cut. My out of country friends go to them when they come to visit, co workers of mine see them, my friends have their hair done at Scissors, my mother, daughter and I all have our hair done there. We take in photos of anything special we want done as they really try to meet our style needs. Before Scissors I had had my long hair hacked at by every single hairdresser I saw which always left me with a flying wedge frizz of over blond and over processed color and a profound hatred of the hair dresser. This has never happened in the six years that I have been at Scissors. It has a great family like atmosphere, one moment Robbie and Sebastian are Kvetching, next thing they are offering you a sip of soup and a funny aside. Love it, it's like live theatre with hair cut and color to boot.I allow extra time because they will tell you to do extra stuff if you need it like today with the highlights. Conversely, they will say no if you don't need highlights or cut done yet. They are a fair priced business and in a great location. Long live King Robbie and Sebastian! read more

This is the most unprofessional place I've ever experienced in my entire life. Sebastian was 30 minutes late for my 10 am appointment, after 4 hours of processing my hair I was unsatisfied with the terrible highlights, I asked politely to please tone them down. After that sebastion and other rude so called hairstylist started yelling at me saying I don't know good hair, that nothing was wrong with it, when clearly it was NOT what I wanted bc I think I would know what I want my hair to look like. They pushed me down in my seat and said to let the professionals do what they have to do. He rudely toned my scalp again I left after only being charged 20$ for the inconvenience and embarrassment. DONT GO TO SCISSORS UNLESS YOU WANT NASTY HAIR or going to a Halloween party, they should revoke his cosmetology license. read more
