My wife and I had dinner here last night(3/26/14). We decided to sit in one of the booths at the bar and eat off of the Bistro menu. It was a cold night and the fire was a really nice addition to our evening. Seating at the fireplace and bar was busy with happy hour patrons and dinner guests. We started with French onion soup, Tuna tartar, and the Foie gras. We then shared the steak au poivre( very generous portion) which came with homemade french fries and then shared Creme brulee for dessert. The food was cooked perfectly, presented well and all came in a timely manner. Our servers were all very attentive & helpful with menu selection. Unfortunately for us this has been our first visit to the scotch in quite some time...we will be back VERY SOON! read more

We frequent the Scotch n Sirloin and the food and service is always outstanding, so we decided to have our rehearsal dinner there. Working with Tom (the owner) to coordinate this 30 person event was very easy. His years of experience in the business helped make the decisions simple and his attention to detail was amazing. We learned quickly why the restaurant has been open for decades. The service at the Scotch n Sirloin is top notch. The staff is professional, attentive and friendly. They really make you feel like royalty. Last, but certainly not least, the food. Having met Chef Amir during a previous visit to the restaurant and seeing his passion for cooking, it was no surprise why the food is incredible. At our 30 person event, we had several "foodies", including ourselves, so the chef had his work cut out for him! We had 4 entrée choices for this dinner, Filet Mignon, Salmon, Chicken Cordon Bleu and Linguini Primavera. Once we started eating, the staff came around to everyone ensuring their food was cooked to their liking, and everyone's food was perfect. While talking with our guests after the meal, everyone was raving about the meal. One couple mentioned that they planned to share, one had the chicken the other had the filet, but they both liked their meals so much that they refused to share it. For dessert we chose cookies. They made various homemade cookies that were delicious. We had several people asking to take some home with them. We eat out a lot and are very picky when it comes to food and this is the only restaurant serving this standard of food in Syracuse. Overall, the Scotch n Sirloin provides fine dining quality food at typical Syracuse restaurant prices, in a casual and comfortable atmosphere. Our event was a huge success, not only did people love the food, but they mentioned how good the staff was and what a good experience it was that evening. Thank you Tom and the staff and Scotch n Sirloin. We wanted to provide a high end meal for the people in our wedding and you delivered way more than we expected. They definitely had a wide variety of whiskeys which was the primary reason for me going however the waiter that served me wasn't very knowledgeable about the whiskey that they served, he did go to the bartender to give me a recommendation based on my preferences however its always nice to discuss such matters with a knowledgeable person. i got a single malt scotch that was a little stronger than what i'm used to but it was none the less good. the staff was very professional. other than that the food was great the wine was amazing. i would and do recommend this place to anyone. if you like wine whiskey and good food you need to make this place a stop at some point. read more

I would give it zero stars if I could. Service has been absolutely horrendous, and the food is not what it used to be. It wasn't only once. I didn't catch them on an off night. The place just sucks. I wouldn't go back, but I have gift certificates to use. I've tried unsuccessfully to use the last of my gift certificates, but they won't let me take a meal to go. I refuse to sit in the dining room and have to tip for lousy service. It's like I am putting them out when I ask for what was ordered. Last time I was there, I forgot to grab the receipt. I asked the server almost immediately for it, and he said no. Too late. Couldn't get me another one. I was surprised. When were leaving, I forgot my jacket. I went around the corner and overheard the server calling me a stupid bitch. Nice huh? He had already been tipped. Save your money and go somewhere else. You'll get a better meal a whole lot cheaper. I really like this place. I always get the steak teriyaki which is really good. I also like the old time feel to the place. It is today like it was the day they opened. I know some people don't like the interior, but it's part of the charm to me. The other positives are the salad bar, which is excellent, and the professional wait staff. We went here on a Friday night and I have to admit I was a little skeptical do to the poor reviews. However I was very pleasantly surprised. Our evening was wonderful and everything was on point. The french onion soup was delicious, the filet mignon was so tender and tasty, the ribeye on special was wonderful and the smoked salmon appetizer was the best my mom had ever tasted. The wine selection was great and the service was friendly and attentive. The only negative I would say was that the salad bar is something to be desired. Food is mediocre at best, dont get the Prime Rib since it isnt slow roasted and not a good piece of meat - when they have it which is seldom unless you call and ask them to have a piece for you. My wife decided to surprise me and take me to Scotch 'N Sirloin for my birthday... OH MY GOD, 100% the best steak I have ever had. I ordered the New York Strip double with broccoli cooked medium rare plus. I walked over to the chef and shook his hand.... The scotch is great -obviously- .. We love the BISTRO! You can't beat the atmosphere in the winter and in the summer it's a co hang out too! The menu varies and there is always a good selection. Had a pretty decent experience at this restaurant on a recent Saturday night. Arrived well before our reservation to have some drinks at the bar. The dark, woody feel of the place is nice. Even though it was very busy, the service was prompt in the bar area. I do wish there was some more space. It can feel like you're constantly in someone's way. We were seated right at our scheduled reservation time. They have this team approach with servers so you end up seeing a handful of different people throughout your meal. I guess that can be viewed as good or bad depending on what you prefer. I found that we maybe had a few too many visits from staff due to them not knowing that someone had just come by. However, we never waited long when in need of something. The food was very good. Had the sirloin; it was cooked exactly as ordered and was very tender. Everyone at the table was happy with their meals. They could definitely do a better job with the salad bar. It's very small and doesn't offer much beyond the true basics. read more

Had not been to this restaurant in three years. When I went again this week I remembered why. The prime rib piece I had, had excessive fat on it. The baked potato was hard and did not have the butter on it I requested. When the server gave me mashed potatoes in place of the baked, they tasted like bland mashed potatoes with butter and no other seasonings. Possibly they make them bland for the majority of older clientele that seem to go there. Pass on the sherry mushrooms. I always had them in the past. This time, they were excessively seasoned. Which made them very bitter. The manager said its their old recipe. Try not to be seated near their picturesque kitchen where u can see the Chiefs cooking. Why? It's where the servers gather and discuss their customers among themselves. Since they try to get as many tables in the main room I was very near the Chiefs window Apparently being a server there gives these people an inflated ego, since they were tearing apart the customers. read more

This might be the hardest yelp review I've written. I've been eating here for years. Everything has been top notch, best in class from the waiters in pressed white butcher coats to the impeccably prepared steaks. I no longer live in the area so I am not sure what has happened or when the new chef took over but my visit to the Syracuse area brought me in for dinner tonight and I was very disappointed. The classic white coats are no longer, my service was pitiful (harsh word, I know, but it's the hard truth), my steak not only came out cold but lacked any decent flavor. A gentleman at a table across from me was also frustrated as I watched him try to get his steak corrected by the kitchen not once but twice! To top it off our waiter put our leftovers in a to go box at our table, which was awkward watching him nervously dump food into a container in front of us. If you have ever been to any 5 star steakhouse the wait staff always takes it into the kitchen and transfers leftovers there. Goes to show the wait staff is no longer properly trained. Side note, don't change the menu either. A new chef comes in and adds some new dishes - it's not a terrible thing but stick with the good ole classic menu that made you famous and reputable and sustain it! This establishment has always been a gem and staple in Syracuse. It's very sad to see it heading in this direction. After close to 20 years of dining here, I think I will have to take a long break with The Scotch. read more

We felt as if we had been in a time machine when we entered this restaurant. The decor screams 1960s. Dark wood, dark floors and heavy sticky furniture. I only mention the furniture because when I tried to get up I could not slide my chair out! My husband had to get up and forcibly pull the chair out. The legs were stuck to the floor. You must need to be a huge carnivore to like this place, and I admit I'm not. I ordered the three fish sample on spinach and it was okay. The spinach tasted better than the fish. My husband's steak and mashed potatoes was the same way - the potatoes outshone the meat. I will admit that seeing a fly swimming in the blue cheese dressing turned me off to their salad bar. Perhaps my standards are too high, but I just felt the restaurant needs a good cleaning. Having automotive shop rags as napkins might be a great novelty, but the texture was a bit too rough for the face. I will say that the staff was courteous and attentive. I have been a regular at The Scotch for years. The food in the restaurant has always been solid and prepared to my requests. The team service approach works wonderfully and I always feel the attentive staff is courteous and professional. For those that haven't been to The Scotch recently, you may want to sample the many delicious and creative new entrees. The new wine selections add a formal touch that is a pleasant departure from years gone by. Management has made a point in continually adding new and interesting vintages. The 45% off deals on Monday & Tuesday are the best deal in town! Adding the Bistro a few years back was a touch of genius! Here is a nice spot to enjoy informal dining with friends next to a blazing fire. Again the service is excellent. Finally the bar. Make a point to enjoy your favorite beverage before dinner. The bar staff is highly experienced, efficient and very creative in serving up that special concoction you thought nobody had ever heard of. My kids all live out of town and when home for the holidays the first thing they ask is: "Dad, when are we going to The Scotch?" read more

With the temperature near zero, it was wonderful to park right near the door and walk into their bar with the circular fireplace to warm my freezing hands. A couple of glasses of Scotch and I was ready for dinner. Everyone was courteous, patient and willing to explain the various items on the menu. I had the bronzini with asparagus, which was delicious and perfectly prepared. Two improvements they could make: More chairs for sitting at the fire. They have only 7 chairs and could use at least 3 more. And the salad bar needs to step up its game. Iceberg lettuce? Really? Is this 1975? Scotch & Sirloin was always my favorite choice. However, over the past year it has gone down hill. It is dark and cold. I do not like the change of the scallops. I've considered the Scotch to be the #1 go-to place to dine for special occasions, or to make any night out special, since the late 70's, long before it was possible to ruin a restaurant's reputation by writing a scathing review on sites such as Yelp. It must be taken into consideration that most people tend to write reviews when they've been very disappointed with their experience rather than when they've been very satisfied. Our visit last night was wonderful! It was a Friday and the place was packed. (I'm sure they served at least double the amount of customers while we were there than the total amount of Yelp reviews they've ever received). Everyone in our view seemed to be totally enjoying themselves. Some thoughts on our visit: 1.) We were early so we headed to the bar/bistro to have a drink before being seated- it was absolutly packed yet the attentive bar staff saw us and quickly filled our drink order. We were called to our table right on time. 2.) It took less than 2 minutes to have our water glasses filled and our drink order taken. 3.) Our main server, Don, was enthusiastically giving us a throuough rundown of the chef's specials and featured items and taking our order within another minute or two. 4.) We both had French onion soup which imho is still as good as can be found anywhere, period. 5.) The salad bar is simple. Crisp greens, all the normal salad veggies, awesome marinated mushrooms, cheese, bacon, homemade croutons, a nice selection of dressings, and Italian and pumpernicke bread that you slice off the loaf yourself. Delicious 6.) We both had top sirloin steaks, petite for the Mrs and full cut for myself. Both cooked to a perfect med rare as requested and seasoned perfectly. 7.) Our sides of green beans with carrots for me and mashed potatoes for my wife were also cooked and seasoned to perfection. 8.) The entire time we were dining, our water glasses were kept full and my glass of wine was replaced quickly when ordered. Empty plates were removed. The friendly and attentive wait staff team approach worked very well. In closing it must be said, the Scotch and Sirloin has been, and remains our favorite local restaurant, and by the number of happy diners there Friday night, we are not alone. If you are looking for the worst restaurant in town you just found it. Service is a joke to say the least. Once you order your food they direct you to the "salad bar" if you could even call it that. Then after 45 minutes they come to your table with multiple orders cooked wrong. The manager apologized for the waiter writing down the order wrong. Just went this past weekend to celebrate my sister's birthday, and completely loved it. Couldn't have found a more suiting place for a great dinner, drinks and atmosphere for family and friends. I'm not really a steak eater but ordered the Steak Teriyaki with Peppercorn sauce, and was pleasantly surprised on how good it was. Disappointed. No, wait, very dissapointed. Waitressing was awful. You need competent people doing this job. Fire all of them. Why waste your reputation (little left) on not the most professional staff? Had the rack of lamb. Asked for medium, got rare, sent it back. Tasteless. Salad bar? Mediocre at best. I felt like it was Bingo night ambiance. I do not mean to be mean, really, I am not a mean spirited person but, how can this level of mediocrity ever happen? You can definitely do MUCH BETTER. Please do so: simple formula, train people to be welcoming and joyful., not lifeless. Pay attention to detail please. My recommendation: go to the bar section NOT the restaurant section. Very disappointed with everything tonight (8/21/13). I have been coming to S n' S since it opened in Syracuse in the 60's. We had to ask for our dinners after waiting over an hour since we started our salad & soup that was ordered was never brought - waiter forgot to "punch" that in the order entry?? So when we got our dinner the mash potatoes were cold - sent back & arrived cold? We were offered another drink or dessert?? Time delay is nothing like the restaurant of the past - never returning and letting friends know of our experience. This was our first time at Scotch 'N Sirloin. We were impressed. It was very different from other places we have eaten. This was not the Smokey Bones crowd or method of operation. My wife and I each had a Ribeye steak. They were cooked just as we ordered and came in a reasonable amount of time. I had a lobster tail and it was great. We each ordered dessert and they were wonderful. We really loved the team approach the waitstaff uses. We felt like this provided better, more attentive service that a typical dedicated waiter or waitress. We will recommend this to our friends and we will definitely return! read more
