Had the worst experience at scout - I do not recommend to anyone. The place was 80% empty and since we were a party of 7 they didn't want to accommodate us (understandable). We asked for two separate tables and then they started saying that this would mess up with the server and the checks. Clearly they didn't want us in because we had two toddlers and a baby with us and they weren't friendly at all. Lived in this area for years and never knew Scout was here. Came for brunch and will definitely return. I had the Shrimp and Grits. Delsh! My friend had the Moon over My Hammy. She ordered hollandaise on the side due to some dietary restrictions. It came on the eggs so she sent it back to be corrected. According to our receipt her name is Claire. Claire immediately comes over to find out "what she got wrong " (her words) . Friend followed up with explaining that she requested on the side because she doesn't do dairy. Claire proceeded to tell her that hollandaise is egg based with no dairy. My friend asks her to confirm with the kitchen. Kitchen said that it has butter. Duh! So then Claire " butter is a fat, not dairy" Ma'am you do understand that butter is has 1 ingredient: CREAM Then she continues with " I had an issue with dairy and butter does not bother me" Why does there need to be an explanation? I'm sure that she didn't want to be wrong but it was not a big deal.. At all. She didn't understand that I also ordered an appetizer so that didn't come. No problem I had more than enough food. They didn't give me a hassle which allowed me to start on a good note and enjoy the night. We used their private dining space which was not large but good enough for our group. They offered a 3-course pre-fixe menu at a great price! And the food was great as well! The food is unique, giving you upscale camping flavors. I stumbled upon Scout because we needed a somewhat last-minute Valentine's Day dinner reservation - I'm so happy I did! Scout is located on a charming block of Decatur. The restaurant itself is a really nice standalone building with windows all the way around (perhaps an old converted train station?). Their COVID precautions seemed to be great, but we're not comfortable eating inside just yet and were really happy with the outdoor accommodations. They have a few tents set up outside that have three flaps down and a ton of heaters, so you stay warm, but there's still airflow. They also have a super cute patio that's not enclosed - a bit better ambience but probably not as warm as the semi-enclosed tents (we're from Chicago, so it didn't both us!). The staff were very accommodating in showing us all the options, moving heaters around, etc. The drink and food menus were both great - they have cocktails on tap, an extensive bourbon list, cocktails, wine, etc. The food menu has a bit of southern comfort flair, but is still unique and not a literal interpretation (ie: not everything is fried or comes with a side of grits). In my opinion, the starters and salads are the stars, so make sure not to skip straight to entrees. We each had drinks, and the split the sriracha salmon bites (highly recommend!), crab and fried green tomatoes, tenderloin steak, and brownie sundae. Everything was amazing, and we felt like the prices were very reasonable for the quality, especially the steak entree (total bill with tax and tip was under $100). Enjoyed this restaurant for the most part. The food was good and the waiter came quickly with our food and drink requests. The only main issue we had was the wait to get to our table. We had a reservation and the restaurant did not seem busy but we had to wait for about 30-40 minutes after our reservation time to get seating. That is really the only critique that I have. Scout is A-OK. First things first, Scout is a striking place. The building looks old (maybe used to be a Southern gentleman's house?), but has been remodeled to look hip and attractive. The many windows in the front section allow lots of light to stream in, even on an overcast day. There's an outdoorsy camping theme going on too, but nothing too over-the-top. I think the only gripe I have about the decor is that the bench felt hard after sitting on it for a while during our leisurely meal! I came for lunch on a Saturday. Scout technically serves lunch on Saturdays and brunch on Sundays, but brunch-y items can be found on the lunch menu (pancakes, chicken and waffles, omelettes, and more). It took me a while to decide what I wanted. Though the pulled smoked port taquitos ($12) bowl sounded appealing, I eventually chose the jumbo lump crab ($15) bowl. It came with potatoes, hollandaise, poached eggs, and caramelized onions. It wasn't bad. I appreciated the generous amounts of crab, but the meat was a little on the dry side. I also wish there were some English muffins/toast slices to round out the bowl. And maybe a few dabs more of hollandaise. Got a baby? Scout seems to be the place for our young friends. The other two groups in our section included tiny kiddos. I made a reservation on OpenTable beforehand, and they made an in-person, last-minute change to our party size without any hassle. Parking was as good as it gets, with options on the street and in the private lot behind the restaurant, with clear signs directing you to Scout's back entrance. Great family-friendly restaurant with a rustic, cabin feel. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and welcoming. They had a good range of brunch and lunch options and you really could not go wrong with whatever you ordered. We thoroughly enjoyed the chicken wings. If you want to go on the lighter side, the Smoked Salmon and Avocado Toast was very tasty. On the I want to roll myself out of here side, try the "The Western" (ham, caramelized onions, peppers, two eggs, crispy potatoes and avocado cream) or "The Southern" (biscuits, chorizo, gravy and eggs). Both offered full portions. The blueberry ricotta pancakes are also a must and you can get a side order if a full meal is too much. So I wasnt comfortable drinking the water because I wasnt sure how long it was on the table. It took forever to order. Not because we weren't ready but because our waitress was ghost. Once we did order and get our food the disappointment continued. We had to ask for condiments that was actually a part of the meal which was below room temperature and bland. Scout's honor this is the coolest bar in downtown Decatur! Stopped into this bar/ restaurant last night and was blown away. The cocktail list is loaded with bountiful options to choose from in addition to a large selection of red/ white wines and liquors of all kinds. I elected to order the "hipster trash" which consisted of a nitro cold brew coffee with Irish whiskey and Amaro whipped cream. The whip cream was homemade and topped with cinnamon. The bar area is spacious with a wrap around bar that has plenty of seating along with several booths. Adjacent to the bar is an area for games with a wooden shuffle board. Big windows line the main dining area allowing for ample light to enter if you find yourself there for lunch or brunch. Took advantage of a stunningly beautiful Atlanta day to enjoy brunch outside on the patio at Scout. Beautiful space inside and out, and every last staff interaction was friendly, attentive, and prompt. I had Eggs Over My Hammy, like Eggs Benedict but with crispy prosciutto, served over fresh arugula and tomatoes. Beautifully executed, eggs poached perfectly. This is the first time visit review. I met one of my good friends here for Sunday brunch. I selected this restaurant because it was available on OpenTable and it also reminded me of a restaurant that I wanted to visit in Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant wasn't too crowded and I was able To find parking relatively easy. When I entered (through the back) I noticed that around 130 that if there was any crowd it had died down. There were a few tables of families ranging in ages enjoying a nice meal. I booked the reservation through open table so that allowed me to request particular seating. I asked for a table by the window. To my surprise the waitresses at this restaurant actually pay attention to the description with an open table however we were here for a birthday and work celebration and those were not acknowledged. I don't remember my waitresses name but she was extremely attentive and gave me some good pointers on cocktails. Apparently some are stronger on purpose. I opted for the Rye Tai As I prefer whiskeys and rums. It wasn't bad. My friend ordered a Bellini. I think she liked it. For my main meal I ordered the crabcake option. I am a flexitarian so I try to space out my red meat consumption. My crabcake wasn't heavily seasoned however it's still had a very good taste. I would order it again honestly. Forgot already with my friend ordered. She ordered the brownie dessert though. I tried a piece of the brownie and you had a good flavor. You can't do a lot with a dessert menus when you are a flexitarian that does not consume dairy. Most dessert menus include regular ice cream which I cannot eat. The brownie dessert had a raspberry drizzle which they could've kept. Ice cream apparently was a bourbon ice cream but my friend said she couldn't taste it initially. I told my boyfriend that I want to come back because I really love the atmosphere in the neighborhood and the menu actually looked really good. We waited 20mins after being seated before someone asked us if we wanted coffee. We waited an additional 15mins before someone took our order and another 20 before being served. We were rarely checked on (unless we managed to make eye contact w various servers) and other customers who were seated AFTER us received their orders. We were the only brown couple in the restaurant and while we're not sure if that played apart of the terrible service, it certainly seemed like it may have. Being short staffed is understandable. I had the scallops and they were perfectly cooked and paired with a pasta & cream sauce. My only complaint was were too close to the door for the patio and it was quite loud each time it closed (almost startling). Went to this cute lil gem for brunch, located in downtown Decatur. I had the egg bowl with ham, cheese, potatoes, and grilled vegetables. I ordered some wheat toast on the side. It was a simple dish but very flavorful. I really enjoyed the avocado sauce on top. It had a little kick to it that made each bite incredible and delicious. The outdoor patio is lovely and the bathroom looks straight out of Pinterest. The cocktails are good too. The service is always attentive and friendly. Dinner menu is interesting. CONS: Not many cons here but, in organizing a brunch here for a group of friends (most of whom are from here), I realized that the location and decor don't make up for the forgettable food when you're a local. The breakfast menu is well presented but unremarkable. In fact, of our group is 6, no one complimented their food. The food isn't bad at all, it's just nothing special. I'd say the dinner menu is much stronger and more impressive. Street parking can be challenging. If you're up for a simple brunch with great cocktails, check this place out. We'll definitely be back. We had a great meal at what I consider to be a fair price for the overall experience. We had two Nose Bones -- one of the best cocktails I've ever had. We sat at the bar, scored the last two seats, and I'd highly recommend hanging out there for cocktails and a meal. The service was great. We were checked on as needed and got our drinks and food in good time. It was fun watching the drinks being made by such an avid cocktail enthusiast, too. Nate takes some serious pride in his liquid craft concoctions, and its always great to see someone passionate about their work. We ordered the free range chicken thigh and the roast salmon sandwiches. They include one side; we went with the Brussel sprout slaw and the southern brown rice. Both were quite tasty, although I much preferred the slaw. My salmon sandwich was fantastic; I like most anything with a fried egg on it. It was a great portion, too, borderline too large to fit in your mouth, but I got the job done free of the fork and knife. The presentation is cool, food served on little trays lined with some creative Scout paper. The tray had blue on the edge and the paper with complimentary orange as the ink -- along with all the colors in the food itself, they get an A+ on good presentation. It seems they thought some of this stuff out, to which I applaud. One questionable item was the call I'd made to see if we could get a 5:45 table for two -- at first it sounded like it wouldn't be a problem, but after a brief hold, she said they were fully booked for the evening. We did score two great seats at the bar upon arrival, but around 6 o'clock, I noticed there wasn't a whole lot of action in the dining room. There were many, many open tables, which tells me there weren't even that many 6:00 reservations either. I feel like we had a more enjoyable experience at the bar, and I'm a tad nervous to eat in the dining room after reading a couple other reviews on here, but in any case, they might be losing business if they've got some issues in the reservation department. Really I would give this a bit higher than just a 4 star review. The renovated inside of this historic building was very well done! Fun ambiance! For food we tried the cauliflower and foie gras bruschetta - both were amazing! I had the flank steak which was cooked and seasoned beautifully. Others had the mussels and the chicken thigh sandwich. Everyone agreed the food was fantastic and there were more items we still wanted to try! The portions were big - had to take a box or two for left overs. The only downside is that it is pretty expensive. We live just up the street and were hoping to see a few cheaper options that could make this a weekly option. What a great new addition to Oakhurst! Came here with hubby and toddler on a weeknight for dinner. The ambience was wonderful. Very cozy, lots of seating, really awesome. It seemed a little too fancy to take a toddler, but it truly was family friendly. Lots of local families noted enjoying a yummy meal. Service was a little slow, but that's to be expected in the first week of opening. However they were very friendly, and I was impressed that the servers did not seem green to the business. They will be amazing soon. I live a block away from Scout, so I was happy to hear about its opening in our Oakhurst neighborhood square. I went for dinner with my husband on a balmy January Friday night. Because it was balmy and you never know from one day to the next what the weather will be like, we chose to sit outside on the elevated deck, which looks out over the Oakhurst village. It's a great space - large with plenty of tables and nice lighting. The inside seemed very packed and noisy, but outside was perfect. The service was a little slow, but that's to be expected with a brand new restaurant, and the quality of service was great. Renna, our server, was friendly, professional and seemed to know her stuff. We had the breaded cauliflower app with a delicious and not-too-heavy cream sauce on the side. It was great - very tasty and balanced. I ordered the salmon and corn cake sandwich with a brussel sprout/carrot slaw on the side. The meal on the whole was on the heavier side, with the breaded cake and sandwich bun, but you could easily remove the bun and eat the salmon cake with egg and kimchi for a full meal. My husband ordered the scallops with gouda grits and turnip greens, which was excellent. The scallops were perfectly cooked and the brown butter sauce complemented it well. The portion sizes here are great for the price. We didn't get dessert but each had a cocktail to start - the Friendly Traveler (tart and fruity vodka and grapefruit) and the Contender (a sipper for sure - heavy whiskey drink). I loved to see that their draft beers were all local to Georgia, with non-local beers offered in bottles or cans. They know we Decatur-ites love our craft beer. Overall, we had a 5-star visit. This place is set up well in the historic Scottish Rite building and could rival many of the 5-star places Decatur has offered for years. Wanted to try this place out, and now a bit torn on the review. Came there with my family: my wife's and my kid's meals were pretty good. I, however, ordered a hanger steak. The fries were great, but the steak was extremely bitter on taste. Now, sadly, I'm not the kind of person that sends food back unless I absolutely have to and until I'm totally sure it tastes bad, so I had to eat more of the steak to taste it better. Well, since there wasn't much steak to begin with, soon I had almost nothing to send back, and so I just finished those a few last pieces of that bitter steak. I really wish I did send the steak back, because I paid $30 for basically a plate of fries (plus some bitter meat, plus stomachache afterwards). I probably wouldn't be this upset if it wasn't a $30 steak. Or, really, I should have ordered a Bahn Mi sandwich and have better food for half the price. Only when I was fully done with the food, did a staff member ask us if everything was good, and I mentioned that the steak was bitter, to which he said "oh I'm sorry about it", to which I responded "don't worry about it", because what else can you say: demand a refund? Nah. Everything else was pretty good, therefore it wouldn't be fair to give this place 1 or 2 stars, but I also can't give it 5 stars, given that it has left me with a bitter aftertaste (pardon the pun). I went to the restaurant, because my children and I couldn't wait an additional 10 minutes for us to get inside the Solarium to use the restroom. It was urgent! However, I don't like using bathrooms in swanky restaurants and not patronizing establishments. It's not the same as rushing into a fast food joint to use it. So I quickly glanced at the menu, and ordered artichoke dip. It was amazing. Even my grade schooler loved it, and she " don't even eat artichokes". I couldn't tell, and I'm annoyed I actually had to share with her. $12.84 for the artichoke dip. A little on the pricey side for dip, but it was good nice thick chunks of artichoke, but it needs more crackers! I gladly/sadly ate my artichoke dip with a spoon but if you can imagine fighting a child for crackers. The bathroom was clean! (Five stars for that) Service was quick! The ambiance was nice and relaxing, a little quiet. It's a low key spot so that it to be expected. I'm not sure if there is additional parking elsewhere, but imo parking is horrible in this area. Found a seat at the bar to cool off and ended up staying for dinner, it was a great choice!! The local beer selection satisfied my taste as an out of towner, always great to try other brews. The bartender selected 2 quality IPAs. He also knew the food menu very well and recommended just about every item on the menu. I ordered the pork tenderloin and every bite was INCREDIBLE! Such a rush of flavors combined between the mango salsa, raspberry sauce around the plate, cool green bean salad and the sweet potato au gratin was like nothing I've ever had before. We came for dinner not too long after they opened and it was good but not great (compared to Leon's). I had the pabst battered cauliflower ($8) and this was delicious. I had the scallops and it came with some vegetables. It was a very generous portion with six scallops. The main drawback was that the sauce, which the scallops were drenched in, was way too salty. For dessert, we shared the donut holes with ice cream and the apple brown betty. The donut holes were good. Cool ambiance and great service. I have high hopes that the food has improved over time. We just had brunch here with our pup on the patio. The view is lovely, shaded and surrounded by trees. The menu is diverse. I ordered the lump crab cakes with poached eggs and broccolini. Every bite was delicious. My husband ordered country fried steak and eggs. I only tried his chorizo gravy and a bite of the biscuit before he finished off the plate, so I guess he loved it too. Remember social distancing? Well Scout doesn't. They're partying like it's 2019. Most of the seating is booths with those back to back benches. Both sides are filled. Your head is literally 6 inches from the head next door. There are a small number of tables but they aren't much better. There is enough space between to pull a chair out and sit so you're about a foot from the head next door. To improve matters even more, the music is very loud so you have to shout at your party, potentially spraying virus everywhere. There is a small amount of outside seating, but you can't reserve it, and it is equally packed. I said something about distancing and the wait staff said "Yes, we know, but we can't do anything." Frankly, if management doesn't care about customer safety during a pandemic then you should not give them your money. We didn't. We walked out. I guess they figured the Georgia law immunizing them from lawsuits if you get infected is a feature, not a bug. If you're a COVID denier, have a blast! You do you. If you are sane, I've no clue why you would choose to go here. read more
