Found this place while we were road tripping to Vermont. Saw it randomly on the side of the road and literally screamed diner when everyone else was discussing where to go eat. We parked and got out of the car, some with more reservations than others. Truth is the outside of this place looks rundown. Or perhaps it looks like you're going somewhere in the middle of nowhere. It could also be that we are used to city life in Miami. We had no need to fear though. Upon entering, we were greeted by the sweetest lady. A waitress, she was wearing Christmas tree pajamas and running around everywhere with a smile on her face. The people there seemed to know her and love her, and well, we ended up, too. It is a shame we didn't get her name. A very caring person, she made us feel right at home. In fact, once we told her we were from Miami and two of us had never seen snow, that became the opening for when regulars would come in, and believe me, there were plenty! Each and every person gave us advise and good wishes relating to the snow. I'm also happy to report that we flew out on time, which was a possibility everyone discussed. As far as food goes, it was beyond affordable. Six of us ate for $60 or so. The portions, too, were massive. I had a vegetable omelette with toast and potatoes. Not to mention that our waitress kept refilling our mugs with some toasty coffee that putting it simply was divine. Everyone was in full agreement pertaining to their respective dishes. The food, the hospitality, the quaintness of this place was one of a kind. It felt like family. Like going home to grandmother's house. Nothing else comes close. How sad was I to find, in upstate New York, while sitting at a table next to very friendly dairy farmers, in this cozy local diner, that Scrappy's serves Kraft faux "maple syrup" (read: maple flavored corn syrup) and dairy products from Wisconsin and Maryland?! The food was ok, but the syrup, half-and-half, and butter all being barely mediocre made the experience not pleasant. I hope one day this local business will choose to support other local business by buying New York State dairy and maple products. read more

When our family decided to do a day trip to Vermont, we knew we had to get a nice breakfast since it was going to be a long day. On our way through Lake George and approaching Fort Ann, my girlfriend noticed Scrappy's Diner on the side of road so in we went. Now this was the definition of a roadside dinner; it is open only until 2:00 pm. We were immediately seated by the waitress, who was wearing pajamas (loved the informal touch) and were immediately served with waters. I guess this place is a locals hangout since everyone that was there were talking to each other, so we were feeling a bit out of place. That feeling quickly evaporated when our waitress started talking to us and made us feel at home. She asked us where we from and started talking to us about the area in general and weather. The most fun part was that whenever she would tell someone coming in that we were from Miami and never seen snow (true statement). Everyone was very friendly to us, asking us about the weather and talking of us about the area. We felt like a family. Now getting back to food, I ordered a western breakfast sandwich with a side of sausage. The sandwich was one of the best I ever had. The egg was very fresh and so were all the other ingredients. Our entire family enjoyed the meal and when we left everyone said goodbye and wished us a safe trip. You don't get that down here. Love these places read more

Got the big momma breakfast which comes with eggs, home fries, 2 pancakes (or French toast), and a choice of ham sausage or bacon. And it was all amazing, pancakes are the size of your head and was so good. Me and the old lady both got the big momma and it was 29.85 for both of us. Discovered this on our way towards Lake George. We wanted to avoid the tourist traps of that area. Man this place is authentic and I mean that in the best way possible. We LOVE basic breakfast, no frills spots like this. We came on a Sunday and appreciated being quickly seated. Eggs are the true test of a cook's bonafides and the person there makes a rocking good sunny side up and omelette. Even more pleasantly surprised that the veggie omelette came with bright green and fresh veggies! *mind blown*. As noted by previous reviews, the service can be jarring for those who are accustomed to a more catered experience. For me, I had no problem with it at all. It's not about being brusque for the sake of being so. They're a small and well oiled crew who are focused on feeding their customers quickly. They're hard working and it's a work ethic I appreciate. Used to come here when it was Mailles. Still great. Good breakfast stop on the way to and from home. Can get very busy on weekends so I typically sit at the counter. Friendly place. I have often chatted with my neighbors at the counter - many who are regulars. Good service. I order the basics - eggs and such so cannot comment on any other food. I asked a waitress if we could sit and she rudely and briskly (nearly yelled) "No .... Kitchen is Closing". I said that the sign said they were open til noon ..... still 20 minutes. She glared at me and said no.... pointed to the door and said "it should be locked". I protested but she rudely said no and stomped off I have never been treated so rudely by someone in the hospitality business before..... Needless to say my wife and I departed very frustrated wondering why we were being discriminated against in such a fashion. 20 minutes later we found a delightful place in Whitehall that I highly recommend. OMG! That was the best biscuits and sausage gravy I've ever had. The whole experience from walking in the door to leaving was perfect. The server was friendly and fast. No issues. Apparently the cook is a little moody but I think that just adds to the charm of the place. Everyone asks how her mood is on any given day. It seems to be the running joke. As far as we were concerned she could've been the nastiest person on the planet but if she cooks like this its not a problem. Went there on Sunday July 8th at 10:40 AM. They were scheduled to close at 12:00 and all doors were locked. No reason given as to why. There may be excuses, but those are not reasons. Its 4th of July weekend and you are not organized enough to be open when scheduled. After a wonderfully long holiday weekend in Lake George, we decided to stop in to Scrappy's for breakfast on our way back to Vermont. There are two ways to enter, I walked in one door and another woman walked in shortly behind me. There was another woman at the second door, I'm not sure if she came in before or after me. It was complete chaos, it literally took over 5 minutes to even be acknowledged by any of the waitresses running around. Once we were, they started arguing with each other about who came in first, rather than asking us. We were never told how long a wait it would be, instead all we heard was they were "waiting on three two tops". A couple at the end of the counter got up, and the people that came in after us swooped in and took their seats. There was one empty spot at the end of the counter and another in the middle, but nothing together. After another probably 10 minutes, a woman who appeared to work there came in with two other people. She said, "well, I guess I can make this work" and started clearing spots and moved the two stools together and grabbed another one and sat down beside where we were standing. We still hadn't even been acknowledged yet. As soon two seats opened up at the counter we sat down. After a few minutes, a waitress came to take our drink order and then I was told I would have to wait because they didn't have any clean glasses. We finally got our food order taken, watched people that had come in after us get their food, and in once case even pay and leave and still we didn't have our food. We could see inside the kitchen door that our order was ready to be picked up, but instead of trying to figure out who ordered what, our waitress was arguing with another saying she "couldn't take it if she didn't know who it belonged to" and she was the one that took our order!! Finally after 50 minutes of sitting, we told her we were done waiting and would like to pay for our drinks but we would not be waiting for our food any longer, to which the waitress waved her hand at us and said " Go, then...just Go". I have never received worse treatment anywhere. I would never recommend this diner to anyone. read more

We discovered this diner years ago when we were heading home from Vermont to Nc. We fell in love from that moment on. We have ordered everything for breakfast from the smallest eggs and bacon to their huge omelettes. The portions are huge and their prices are little. We haven't had the pleasure to eat lunch there yet but we will soon. Scrappy's is our annual stop when we are heading home and it will be as long as it there.
