Had some good things at this local Rockford bar and grill. It isn't much in the way of looks, but it's got what you need: drinks and some crappy bar food. Screw City Tavern is located in a pretty crummy shopping plaza. Just ignore that and go in. The service may not be that great either but not that bad though. A basic looking kind of tavern with mostly locals around. It's got some entertainment such as live music. That's about the only time it gets busy, when there's things like that. It's about $7 for a basic cocktail. The food menu is pretty unimpressive. It's about $8 for the SCT Pretzel Bites. Probably the healthiest thing on the menu. This comes with mustard and pimento beer cheese sauce. Good for a few drinks. It also has food but nothing special. This is a popular place for live music and whatever. read more

The service was very friendly as well as other customers. They do have slot machines for gambling. I won $3, but then I lost it again. I would recommend checking this place out if in town. We went there for Screw City Fest. The fest began at 1 pm. We arrived around 12:30 pm. They did not have Busch Light (ran out) & amaretto. When we tried to get dinner around 4:30 pm, they did not have tortillas for quesadillas and they did not have onion rings. How are you out of food for a Festival that has been planned??? No one came to take our orders or check on us. We had to go to the bar to get refills. At one point, we had to call in to the kitchen to see if someone was working the bar to get our drinks. My mother talked to the waitresses there informing them how they messed up on my order, remind you they never checked up on an update to waitress or service us, failed to fix the problem at hand. Took over 40 minutes to remake my order meanwhile my mother and daughter already ate their food when I was waiting for mine to be fixed. Then the waitress came strolling over, in an absurd state of mind and pointed and screamed at my mother saying she was the problem and how I was mistaken. Remind you, my daughter was sitting right besides me eating. Then she shouted "let's take this outside", we refused to listen to her threats and remarks and I told my mother let's walk away from this business and service. Others followed, surrounding us while I was holding my daughter at my hip. Men and women came at us with a rude demeanor. Felt very threatening. Mind you what appears to be an underage female working at the bar which we provided in the pictures you have in front of you. Felt like unusual drunks working behind the bar. Never expected a restaurant to follow with such an aggressive and disgusting attitude while my 4 year old daughter was at hand. Definitely distraught with this behavior. read more

We used to love Screw City Tavern, but unfortunately, it seems to have gone downhill over the past year. We were there on Saturday night, and it was eerily quiet--only one other table of three and four people at the bar. Not the lively place it used to be. I ordered the burger with fries, and my husband had the Screw City pasta with grilled chicken. My burger was supposed to be medium, but it was quite well done--again. They cooked the flavor right out of it, and sadly, this is the THIRD time they've done this. Three strikes, and you're out. We won't be coming back. On top of that, my husband's pasta was really soupy and bland, nothing like what it's been in the past. We have been coming to trivia on Tuesdays for almost two years, at your location. In the last 6 months the service has been going downhill rapidly. We thought since the staff was new, we'd try to give them a chance and see if it got better. While the staff is kind, we think training is needed. We would likely drink more if we didn't have to flag them down every time. We are trying to concentrate on trivia. The original waitresses, like Maddie, were awesome! With the new crew we have waited 30 mins to get a waitress to come over and take drink/food orders. There is no return to our table to check to see if drinks/food are needed or anything else. I've seen 2 waitresses on the floor with maybe 6 tables. This amount of tables should be handled fine with two people. The staff is not clearing the tables and several times we have moved the dishes ourselves to a bus pan, to free up some room at the table. There seems to be other people hanging around behind the bar that could be helping. Looks like the waitresses are going behind the bar to get/make drinks. I'd think the bartender should be handling the drink orders and waitresses handling the tables and food. We also noticed the craft beer menu is seriously lacking. This is another reason we liked your establishment. There used to be a chalkboard with all the craft beers, it no longer has anything listed. I put myself through college waiting tables, so I know what it's like. We like your location and menu, but are seriously considering going to another trivia location. read more

Music was way too loud. Service was horrible. Bar was dirty and based on the attention to customers and upkeep I would not eat anything coming out of the kitchen. We also ordered drinks in containers as we didn't trust the bar are to be clean. read more

Went there on a Thursday night for some entertainment. Atmosphere is nice but service is bad. Had to go to bar to get drinks even though a waitress was there. My wife's food was good (tuna bowl) my BLT sandwich was just ok. Servers just stayed by bar all night. Good luck getting us back read more

I don't know how this place is still open. Went there on St. Patrick's Day. The place was empty. That should've been my first clue. It was 5:30 pm. We ordered a couple of regular items off the menu and the corned beef and cabbage plate. It took forever to get service, and then it took even more forever to get the food. When the food did come out, it came out in about 10 minute increments meaning with six of us there, one person got food, 10 minutes later another person got food, 10 minutes later another person got food. We were laughing that it was the nastiest looking and coldest food that we've been served in a restaurant, not to mention also the warmest beer we've had in a bar, but we figured we'd stick it out. When it came time to wait for the sixth plate to come out, I went up and told the bartender/Server Not to bother just to get the check. I paid for the food that we laughed at and we even left a tip which probably left the wrong impression and let everybody in that place think they're doing a good job. However, I think it won't be long till they're all collecting unemployment. The service was that bad and the food was absolutely horrible. read more

I would have to agree with the previous reviewer, Jim. I didn't know the original cook wasn't there anymore, but it makes sense. We discovered this restaurant over a year ago and had found the food to be above average for a bar/restaurant. It really felt like there was care put into the several menu items we tried. Over the last few months we started having issues. I would sometimes make to-go orders and there were two or three occasions where they were wrong. The last time I ordered to go and got their Screw City Pasta, the chicken was rubbery and the dish was basically inedible. We gave it a couple few month's distance and decided to try again by going into the restaurant. My husband got a burger which he asked to have cooked medium, but it was cooked well, another thing he'd noticed had started to happen more recently when ordering there. I ordered the Screw City Pasta and it was soupy and pretty much flavorless, even after asking to have cajun seasoning put on it. I had only eaten a small amount of the meal which I pointed out to the server and asked if I could get something taken off the bill or order something different. She said there was no manager there and so I could write my name and number down on the check and she would have one call me. I've never had a situation at a restaurant like this before where there's been an issue with the food and no one there with the authority to make a decision about it. Apparently this is not uncommon from some of the other reviews I've seen online. Maybe they'll call me back though I'm not holding my breath. Based on my recent experiences, I have to say that this restaurant has gone downhill fast. I ordered the soup of the day, and shrimp. It was not busy at all. The servicer was OK. Busy chatting with other customers. The shrimp was very good. But the soup was not hot at all. It seem to be microwaved. I will give them another try at some point. read more

First of all, I'd like to point out that the STAFF of ANY bar or restaurant can make or break a place. I speak from experience of having been in all aspects of the hospitality business for over 30 years. That being said, the experience I had about a week ago will keep bringing me back. The place was slow when my son and I walked; and we were greeted with a very cheerful "hello" from our bartender Alissa. She was PEFECT when it came to attentiveness, and professionalism. She had a vast level of experience with patrons and how to best serve them. The 3 hours we spent there were great! The variety of beer and spirits will appeal to ALL patrons; even those who don't drink. She was very friendly, even before we left our tip! As long as she is behind the bar; we will be coming back! Six months ago, I would have rated them 5 stars. Unfortunately, the cook (Jake) which we really liked was fired not because of cooking or work ethic but rather some conflict with the owner. We were still going between 1-3 times a week and Amber, Heather and Maddy were all awesome servers/bartenders. Now Amber has been fired due to some conflict, not her work performance. Recently the food hasn't been what it was, and our most recent visit was the worst we've had. We got someone new and were there for the Friday Night Fish Fry, but she didn't realize there was a Friday Night menu. We asked about it and she didn't realize there was a special. When we got our food, the order was mixed up. It seemed like when we mentioned it that it was a big deal. We ended up so frustrated we were tempted to walk out. It has gone from a neighborhood Cheers sort of 'go to' place to being frustrating. We're done going there for now we might try them again in 6 months and see if the food/service staffing issues have been corrected. read more
