Instead of refusing the package (as most hotel employees would have done upon noticing that I had checked out) she remembered me, signed for it, and then had it FedExed to my home in New York. The Scripps Inn in La Jolla is GORGEOUS! It is everything a small, intimate, beach "inn" should be. I stayed for two nights the weekend of June 26/27 for my best friends wedding and could not be more impressed. Our two bedroom suite was exceptional! There was a living room area with a couch (pullout bed) coffee table, and big flat screen tv. This was connected to the little kitchen area with a sink, burners, fridge and small kitchen table. The bathroom was nice and both bedrooms were roomy and comfortable. This suite was more than enough room for the bride and her three best friends! One bedroom has a window with a gorgeous ocean view. Outside our front door was a large shared baloney with a patio set. Downstairs is the small lobby and front parking lot. Coast highway is in front of the Inn and on the other side of it is the Pacific Ocean. The staff was courteous, accommodating and friendly. The amenities such as Aveda products in your bathroom is a nice touch. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, beachy San Diego weekend this is a great place to stay! read more

This is the perfect place for a getaway, light, airy and cozy. The room and views were exceptional, the staff kind and courteous; second to none. They tried sooooo hard, they really did. Checked in late, so had to get the secret code box for our key, after checking in, realized my wife had screwed up the reservation. Because it was after hours, there was no-one to discuss this with immediately and there was no vacancy regardless. Rooms are super cozy, we had room 6, which had the fireplace which was a super nice touch, wood, matches and starters was awesome. The tv was in an awkward spot, the coffee maker was difficult, the bed not the most comfortable, the parking was sucky and sketchy, the "breakfast" was muffins and a bowl of yogurt, with some bananas. The people staying above us must be insomniacs or sleepwalkers, thank god they didn't have sex, because you can hear everything. There was a family of crows that decided to caw from 6 am on. All in all it was decent, but........ and this is a huge ghetto booty butt.......... we could see the ocean from our 2 front windows. That makes the lame crap worth it. Now if i had had one of the other rooms without an ocean view, this would have a much different flavor. read more

I've stayed at a lot of hotels in San Diego and La Jolla and am ecstatic to have found this gem! Bryce (the manager) and Savannah couldn't have been more courteous or helpful in our time there. The Scripps Inn is the best situated beach hotel in La Jolla; seems like every room has a generous view of the ocean and you'll fall asleep to the lullaby of surf every night. A total of four of us stayed in room one and we had a wonderful stay. We first were greeted by Bryce (hotel manager) who graciously helped us with whatever we needed and answered all of our questions we had. The customer service from the front desk was very accommodating and helpful. We then entered our room and it was beautifully decorated with calm and relaxing colors that mesh well with each other. There was a kitchen, a fridge, a dining table with two bedrooms and a spacious living room. We could have easily fitted an additional two people as the couch could have turned into a bed. Outside there is a lounge area with couches and a table where you can relax and enjoy the gorgeous view of la jolla coast. The location of the hotel is perfect because you are within walking distance to many shops/bars and restaurants. Although the stay can be a bit pricey, it is totally worth it and I would highly recommend staying here. read more

The location can't get any better, we loved walking everywhere. The employee at the front desk was great. The room could use some love: weird electrical issues, we had to move furniture to be able to open the front shutters/windows, the couch bed is awful. We dealt with a lot of noise from neighbors late into the night so ended up closing all the windows which was sad as the ocean breeze/smell was a big part of what we were looking forward to. We got married at the Pacific Union Pocket Park across the street and booked a room at the Scripps Inn where I could get ready and where we could serve drinks to our guests after the ceremony. I'm so glad we did this, and I'd recommend it to anyone getting married either at the MCASD park or Cuvier Park. The hotel was wonderful to work with and let me check in early so I could relax and get ready before the ceremony. They also gave us a room right off the beautiful communal patio so we could easily have our guests congregate there before we went to dinner. You have a gorgeous view of the ocean from the patio, which made our event really nice. The room itself was also beautiful, and all of the staff were very helpful. Couldn't recommend this place more highly. read more

Let's make it clear. You mostly pay for location which is perfect if you want to be in La Jolla village. The room was decent size, mattress comfortable and it was clean. Not anything luxurious but we didn't really expect that. Staff very friendly and pleasant and trying to ensure you are satisfied. You could get the beach chairs, towels. Now, I agree with some other reviewers that calling it B&B is a little misleading. Breakfast in the small check in office where there is typical continental kind of breakfast-coffee, tea from Keurig, some pastries, granola. And usually, in B&B there is certain age restriction for children. We were there with our 10 years old but it was kind of surprising that there was an infant there too. So for 3 night in a row (every night) when the baby was up and crying, we were up as well. Since it's a small inn, it felt like baby was in our room. One night we were up 3:30 am, 4:30 am and 5:30 am. You get the picture! So I am not by any means anti-children grumpy lady but I was surprised to pay a decent amount of money and not really get much of sleep. B&B...more like loose interpretation of it. So as long as you are aware of what to expect, you could adjust your expectations appropriately. read more

I am literally pulling out of the parking lot right now and I couldn't wait to review this place. DO NOT STAY HERE! No A/C, okay. A lot of places in San Diego don't have A/C. But this means you must have your windows open at all times, fan blowing on full blast. I was okay with having the windows open because you can hear the ocean breeze during the night. What ruined that for me was the fact several guests decided it was okay to smoke out on the lanai or in front of their rooms, so cigarette smoke wafted in throughout the night and morning. Perhaps we just had the worst room in the house, but you can hear EVERYTHING here. The first morning, we realized the dumpster was located directly behind our room as we were woken up by the noise of the garbage truck pulling in. And apparently the housekeeping closet is located next to our room as well and they spared no mercy as they banged around in there to their hearts content. The worst of it all - yesterday we decided to come back to our room around 1PM for a nap (because we hardly got any sleep here the night prior) and the horrid upstairs guests were SO LOUD and inconsiderate. OMG. They were laughing like braying donkeys and speaking so loudly/playing music that you could hear them from the street! They clomped around like Clydesdales. Not just regular horses, but gigantic, beasts of burden. I do feel like I can't 100% blame the hotel for its guests, but they really should have asked them to keep it down and have a designated smoking area if it's such an issue. Also, our key card didn't work from the back so we had to go around to the front each time. Front desks response to that was, "Oh, that's strange." Key card didn't work the second night and it took awhile to get a call back about that, we were told where to access a key to get into our room but the front lock was so corroded we had to go around and use the back entrance anyway. Breakfast consisted of a couple dry pastries, yogurt/granola, and juice. Location is great, views are great, room was incredibly clean, quality toiletries. But ultimately, you are here to sleep. If that can't be done in comfort at the cost of nearly $600 for two nights, then this place really doesn't deserve more than the generous 2 stars I'm giving it. read more

2.5 stars I would say. Location is perfect. And I loved La Jolla. View from our room was stunning. But the place is dated and small, more like a motel . Nice decor but when you look closely, carpet is really stained and everything is tired and worn. The worst part is the noise. Omg you would think staying on the beach would be quiet and relaxing and at night it was, but every morning the street traffic and garbage trucks would wake us up . I cannot describe how loud these were, I joked that it sounded like the apocalypse every morning. And in addition to the street traffic you'd better hope you don't get loud neighbors. One morning I was awakened to the annoyingly loud laughter and chit chat of our neighbors well before 7 am right outside my window. It went on for a couple hours. Not for me. read more

It's been a few years since we had any friends stay here, but it's definitely worth the mention. Small, tucked-away, right across the street from the ocean, walking distance to La Jolla Village shopping and eateries, and ultra-cozy. Back at that time (and perhaps still), you could walk to the office each morning and get a small basket of superb warm pastries...almost good enough to warrant staying there just for the pastries. Rates are steep, but appropriate for how lovely the place is. Don't expect Ritz Carlton...this is the anti-Ritz, despite similar prices. Small, intimate, and adorable. read more

We stayed at the Scripps Inn recently for our anniversary.. unfortunately special occasions aren't acknowledged here which was kind of sad. We are well-traveled, been around the world.. and have never stayed at a hotel that doesn't acknowledge a special occasion. Even a small hand written note would have been sweet. Secondly, but most importantly ... this is the only hotel I've ever been to in a first world country that doesn't have air conditioning! The weather temperature outside was only 75 degrees at night but the room felt over ten degrees higher- the air circulation was horrible, nothing helped with cooling us down, even with ALL the windows opened, ceiling fan on high ... and an additional fan blowing on high! I don't get hot easily but I could barely sleep both nights, tossed and turned and woke up every hour due to being too hot- probably only got a few hours of interrupted sleep- it was honestly torturous as it ruined my vacation due to lack of sleep. The only reason I'm giving two stars is for the good location.. if you enjoy nice walks along the beach. Too bad our room didn't have any view of the ocean though, I read in other reviews that most the rooms have a view. read more

The location is good, and the views from parts of this establishment are rather spectacular indeed - but it's a *motel*, people! I really don't understand all the raving reviews... I mean, it's not terrible or anything - it is clean and quiet, and the Inn Keeper is very pleasant - but it's a far cry from anything halfway luxurious. Our "2 Bedroom Ocean View Suite" turned out to be a small modest apartment at best: 2 tiny bedrooms with nothing else but a queen bed, 2 nightstands and a small closet behind a mirrored door (one of the bedrooms with a view of a road behind the motel, the other of the glorious Pacific Ocean), 1 itsy-bitsy bathroom (fyi: hot and cold water of the bath tub are on the wrong end of the faucet), small bare bones living room and a kitchenette (equipped with all the necessities). I was quite disappointed, as I was expecting something very different based on all the 5 star reviews posted here. The place is fine if you need just a clean and cozy place to sleep at close to the beach and shopping/dining. If you are hoping for something upscale then Scripps ain't it. read more

We loved the Scripps Inn. My fiance surprised me with a stay here the morning I flew back in from a business trip in Australia. We arrived and were blown away with the location and look of the place, couldn't believe how close we were to the water. We had an amazing room, so huge with a separate seating area. I didn't want to leave. It was a great place to hang out and relax after a long trip. In the morning we went to the office and got muffins, juice and they had a keurig so we got a coffee and sat outside our room and watched the ocean. We are going back in exactly a month for my birthday and we have already requested specifically the same room we stayed in a few months back. Love love this place! read more

Scripps Inn is the BnB category. Therefore, it receives a 5 for its exceptional service. Although the breakfast is not a "hot breakfast", they have phenomenal local pastries. What really sets this Inn apart is the location and the staff. Elaine is an absolutely amazing host, and the Inn is literally across the street from the water and within walking distance to all of the great things that La Jolla has to offer. We went here for a special weekend and she ensured that it was all we hoped it would be. read more

We stayed at the Scripps Inn for two nights for our wedding. The hotel room was beautiful, they said it was newly remodeled and we were the first to stay in it! Obviously the location is perfect, with the ocean right there and Cuvier Park (my wedding site) right across the street. The staff here have to be the friendliest hotel staff I have ever encountered. They really seem like they care about your stay and do whatever they can to make it better. The only reason I am giving it 4/5 stars is the fact that I was not impressed with the breakfast. For a "B&B" I was expecting a nice hot, filling meal. Instead it was coffee, juice, granola, oatmeal and pastries, just what I would get at any other hotel with a continental breakfast. Granted everything they had was very good, I was just expecting a little more. Overall I would stay here again for a special occasion and definitely recommend it! read more

We had the most pleasant stay at Scripps Inn. The hotel is a beautiful boutique hotel right on the ocean. The location is perfect. The room was super clean and beautifully decorated. We were upgraded to the suite with a beautiful view of the water. The staff was friendly and helpful! We booked the 7 Cave Kayak Tour through them which was so worth it. This place is worth it if you purchase the spring special for $145/night. The room was clean, roomy, and cozy. The location was great, right by the ocean, shops, and restaurants. If you're a young couple not planning to stay in the room, this is the place for you. If you're looking for peace and quiet and planning to stay in the room, this is NOT for you. The tv (as past reviewers stated) does NOT work. You must get up and walk to tv each time you want to turn on/off tv and increase/decrease volume. Also, every 20 minutes you must reboot cable box because tv screen will go blank. Luckily, we are not tv watchers so it didn't affect us much. The room was clean, except for the one roach and came out the first night next to the bed. We didn't see any more since that first night and the room did look pretty clean overall. Don't expect to find any hotel/inn workers. I went to lobby and waited 15 minutes both times to get internet access and toiletries. One time, I just called the inn from my cell phone to see what would happen and suddenly they magically appeared. I gave it 4 stars because it met our expectations for the price and location. The roach almost made me give it a 1 star, but I figured it was a fluke. read more

I have stayed here before and it is definitely pretty and in a beautiful location across the street from the ocean! When my husband and I came here a few years ago with our dogs (we travel with them all the time) it was great except when u have pets u can not stay in a room upstairs so u have to stay downstairs which was fine until u have very loud noisy people above u and that made it very annoying!! Regardless we still had a nice time!! I recently just went back here with my sister and my dogs again and unbeknownst to me the rules have changed and dogs are not allowed across the street by the ocean or park pretty much all day long anymore! So u could say I was very disappointed that the Inn did not warn me about this knowing I was coming with 3 dogs so we were banned from going near the water or even that side of the street from 9am-6pm which is pretty much all day or if we did and got caught we would get a fine!! Also at the Inn there are no garbage cans or dog baggies to clean up after your dog and I have stayed at many pet friendly places in California and they always provide bags and garbage cans for your dogs mess!! I always keep bags with me anyway but had no place to throw them because of no garbage cans around the property! I even asked the girl at the front desk and she just shrugged her shoulders as if to say oh well!! All I can say is if you're going to allow pets on your property and consider your place "pet friendly " then u should have bags and garbage cans for pet owners!! I still think it's a nice property but will probably never come back again because I travel with my dogs and I was very disappointed in my stay this time since my dogs were not allowed by the ocean or in the park all day long!! Until La Jolla changes the pet rules I will not be back!! Laguna beach and Carmel Beach were much more pet friendly so that's where I will take my business form here on out!! read more

We loved our two-night getaway here! The location is super. It's a rocky shore, not a swimming beach here, but the ocean is right across the street. We could sit right outside our door and watch the waves. Just a short walk away, we watched harbor seals lounging on the sand. We left our car at the Inn and walked everywhere and were glad not to have to look for parking in downtown La Jolla. The room was surprisingly roomy and comfy and looked like it had been recently renovated. The king bed was great and even the fold-out couch wasn't bad. Good, free wi-fi. The staff guy, David, went out of his way to be helpful. The only reason for 4 stars is what others have mentioned: the breakfast was unimpressive. We've stayed at B&B's before with sit down breakfasts served on china. This was typical motel fare with pastries, dry cereal and yogurt. We took it back to our room one morning and walked to a cafe the second morning. In spite of the breakfast, we will stay here again. read more
