We recently purchased a home that had a 34 year old HVAC system. We knew it needed full replacement so we researched 6 companies, compared quotes and products and decided to go with SCS. SCS hit every mark we were looking for and we couldn't be more pleased. They just completed the install a few minutes ago but I wanted to leave a referral for anyone who's AC might be going out in the heat this week so you know who you can trust, especially if you need to move quick on getting a new system. We took almost 2 months. I was nervous about the high ratings I saw on yelp and thought that either they figured out how to rig the system or they really are that good. Thankfully we found out they really are that good. I felt confident in their work, the product (We went with Lennox AC-SL18, Furnace - SLP98 and the S30 iComfort thermostat) and quality of service from beginning to end. Had hidden fees that were found out post-service. Claimed that it was their fault and offered to waive a future service call fee. I reached out to take them up on that offer a few years later and I got this response: "While we appreciate you reaching back out, unfortunately we are not able to do any service on your unit at this time. We recommend XYZ or ABC. We have action, but it is going to cost money, so we will not be doing any business for you." Clown show. read more

SCS came to do a routine spring HVAC tuneup. The service charge was $95 plus $65 for a pound of refrigerant. The technician seemed knowledgeable. He came during the promised 3-hour window - this is worth a lot to me as it's hard to schedule free time for tasks like this and a company that sticks to a schedule is really respectful of my time. Update 8/20/19: second experience with SCS was also positive. I needed a capacitor and relay replaced. They showed up on time (2 hours after I called, on a sweltering August day). Steven was diligent and polite, got the system working again, and it cost me a little under $500 which didn't feel excessive for the amount of diagnostics and parts required. Five stars! read more

BLUF: SCS is responsive, cost-effective, and customer oriented. They have become my go-to for any heating and cooling issues for the house. My AC had blown out a year after I had another contractor the previous year come and "repair" the exterior unit. I reached out to a bunch of contractors and many had long lead times (5-10 days before an initial appointment and assessment), and then the additional time to order parts and install. SCS was unique and immediately messaged me back and came over to the house to inspect the issue THE SAME DAY at 8PM! That's some serious customer service. Cory was great, friendly, and responsive. Within 2 minutes of arriving to the house, he had identified the issue and laid out multiple repair options. There was no upselling or forcing to replace the entire exterior unit. We agreed on going the path of least resistance. Cory came back the very next day, installed the part, and had AC blowing cold air again making the house bearable. 2-weeks later, the repair is holding up and the house is nice and cool. His prices are fair and he has superior HVAC knowledge, which gave me the confidence to use SCS. When entering the home, they also put on shoe covers to not track dirt into the house. Post repair, they also performed a quality assurance test, measured temperatures inside the HVAC vents relative to ambient temperature. I switch over from heat to air conditioning, two days ago. No issues as usual. Any of my Northern Virginia friends need HVAC work? I recommend SCS Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. Quality work and very reliable equipment. A few of my neighbors use other companies and I see those companies come out to fix or perform routine maintenance only for them to return the next week to fix something else. I have not had that experience with SCS. They come, they install and I don't need them for years. After a few years, I do call and asked them to check it out just for my peace of mind. I chose this company based on the amazing reviews. I needed a second opinion and boy did they deliver. Here is the story... I had ANOTHER company (one of the big guys you see all around the beltway) out to diagnose a problem with my A/C, this may sound sexist, but I felt like I was being taken for a ride. (I am a woman--these two ppl were guys) 'Man-splaining' was rampant. I was even called "sweetie" Surprise, surprise, I needed an entire unit at the cost of several thousand dollars. Needless to say, I was turned off. Welp, I called SCS and Corey and his team came out. Now, I didn't tell them anything so I could run a test between the two companies. Corey told me that I didn't need a new unit and in fact, needed some adjustments to the tune of a few hundred. When I told him what the guys said, he was so angry, like personally angry. He told me before taking over this business, he worked for the same company and roping customers into new units who didn't need them was part of the policy. I am SO glad I called SCS!! This is now our second time using SCS and it was just like the first, amazing. Our ac had to go out on the hottest day of summer so far. We called at 5:45 in the evening and they sent Andrew our fist thing in the morning. He was quick and not only fixed it but explained what broke and what we should expect next. In our case we are probably looking to replace the unit in 4-5 years and we will absolutely use them for the replacement. I'm giving 5 stars because I can't give more. To put it simply, Cory has saved my butt numerous times. The builder-grade junk HVAC that came with my house needed to be replaced but I wasn't in a position financially to replace it. Cory kept it running for me for YEARS - much longer than he should have - coming out on Sundays and late in the evenings because of various issues I was having with my unit. He kept the place cool in the hottest parts of summer and never left us hanging "waiting for parts." When I finally had the coin to replace my HVAC, naturally, Cory got the call. He did the install by himself in a single day and, as advertised, the cost to heat and cool my home decreased dramatically. His install was neat, clean and doesn't look "jury rigged" at all. I've had the new HVAC for about 3 years and haven't had so much as a single problem. I can't recommend him enough: he's friendly, honest, knowledgeable, hard working and trust worthy. I typically do not leave any reviews on Yelp but after my recent experience with SCS, it's the least that I can do. My boiler system stopped working a few days ago and left my house without any heat. I called a few local companies but didn't make it very far. I either was on hold for an eternity, couldn't speak with a tech, or they didn't work on my type of system. I finally came across SCS on Yelp. After reading the great reviews I decided to give them a call. I'm not sure who I spoke to but the guy was a true professional. He was very polite, caring, and he treated my call with the utmost urgency since I didn't have heat and the temp was dropping below freezing. As promised, a few hours later I received a call from one of their technicians (Corey) notifying me that they will be arriving within the next 30 minutes. Once Corey and the other Tech arrived, I knew I was in good hands. As Corey was diagnosing the problem, he educated me on how the system works, what he's doing, etc. He answered all my questions and assured me that they are not leaving until my problem was resolved and I had heat again. It was quite clear that Corey was NOT trying to take advantage of my situation. Shortly after, the problem was fixed and I had heat again. Corey and his teammate checked every radiator in my house to confirm that there are no air pockets preventing the system from running efficiently. Corey called me the next morning to check-in and thank me again for my business. I was in a quasi state of shock as I had never had such a good experience with a repair technician. It's good to know that there are still some good, honest, dependable HVAC companies out there. My experience with Jesse from SCS was exactly what I was hoping for. He was efficient but not too rushed while he diagnosed my HVAC, and took the time to share his expertise with me. I didn't feel for a moment like I was being swindled or oversold. He was real with me, and walked me through the pros and cons of various options, ranging from the most expensive to very cheap tweaks that will improve things a bit. I'm a weekend warrior do-it-yourselfer who is comfortable tackling most systems in the house on my own, but HVAC is one of those things that I haven't touched before and really wanted an expert. I used SCS for years. Each year Eric came to my house to look at my AC or heating problems, and each visit cost hundreds of dollars. This week I discovered, accidentally, that his diagnosis of my AC problems was completely false. We do NOT need a new unit. There is no freon leak which would cause us to need a new unit or to continue to have Eric add freon at great expense every summer. Two different contractors showed me that we have a simple leak due to a PVC pipe being attached wrong. I can prevent the AC from shutting off myself by emptying the pan underneath the unit. If the leak continued and rusted out the pan, we could have had a massive leak. All is obvious to the naked eye-- to someone who knows AC units. Either Eric knew about these simple problems and didn't tell me, or he actually didn't know. It's shocking that he told me and my husband a completely different story for several years. read more

AC went out just as it hit 95 degrees. Went searching for HVAC companies and ran across SCS. I had a different company scheduled, but cancelled them and went with SCS since when I called, Cory picked up, and spoke to me about the problem, and actually explained things to me. As I described what happened, he described what he thought the problem was based on description, and I scheduled for the following morning. Although their service call is a bit more expensive than the other companies, I went with them based on conversation. He even called me back that evening, and discussed the problem further as we believed it was a capacitor, instead of the motor. Jesse arrived the next morning on time, and opened the unit. It was the capacitor. He showed me the issue, replaced it, and checked the pressures. The AC was working and cooling, however the refrigerant was a little low, which he didn't have, and said he would be back later that day. He arrived as expected, and much to my disdain, the motor has stopped working sometime between the capacitor replacement, and him coming back. He ordered an aftermarket motor on the spot, and arrived the next morning right on time, replaced the motor and cleaned the unit. No problems since. I was prepared for a pretty hefty bill since I had the capacitor and motor replaced, however just as Cory said, they would "make it as painless as possible". Because the motor was replaced, which was pretty expensive, he removed the Service Call fee. He worked out a few other things to bring the bill to a very reasonable rate. This is a hard review to write, but please read. SCS fell into my lap and I am so blessed that they did. My kitten went missing and it turned out that smell was telling us something. I called this stranger - Cory. He came by, I told him about the A/C floor register being off when kitty went missing and the smell. Understanding how upset I was and expecting the worse, I told Cory to call me: I would go to neighbor's apartment. 20 minutes later, he called. I met him, he told me the sad expected news. He said a part needed replacing. I asked when could he replace it and let me get my check book. He said he'd order it and I could pay for everything then. This man was so kind and understanding. As I was walking to the empty house - I asked him, could I please have a hug. I cried on his shoulder. When I pulled back, he was crying too. What a caring and professional man. I highly recommend SCS! After requesting a quote through Yelp for a whole home humidifier, Cory replied quickly offering information and a price. As a new home owner, I've been in contact with various companies for service and none have been as easy to work with and attentive as SCS. One other companies who commented that I might not be able to get one and/or did less than great work, I was pleasantly comforted by Cory's quick (and multiple) email responses to questions/concerns. I never felt like he was pressuring me into anything or trying to sell me unnecessary things. On the day of the installation, they were on-time and very conscientious about the work, asking multiple times about how I would like the tubing to be run and willing to take the time and effort to even run into the walls if I wanted (I didn't care!). I freaked out when my thermostat went blank and no air was blowing out of my vents (on a day when the high was 95 degrees). I contacted SCS and Cory went over a few things over the phone, such as making sure the furnace switch was on, batteries replaced, etc. When none of that fixed the problem, he was at my house within the hour and thankfully, it turned out to be a simple fix. A surprise finding for me... I've used SCS in the past for a complete A/C install, I was very happy with the work then. The surprise finding is that Cory's team runs gas lines too! We called SCS on a Friday afternoon to see if they would be willing to try to free a bird that had become trapped in our furnace vent. Their technician Charles came by after his scheduled appointments. He quickly took the vent apart, stepped back, and a hermit thrush(?) sailed through the opening and straight out the door. There was a loud scrabbling and a second bird followed the first. I was sure that was it, but Charles said "wait" and his camera showed one more. I used SCS to replace my entire $6,000 AC unit last summer because they were on my condo's preferred vendors list. I have no prior experience with full HVAC replacement, but it was fine I guess. I thought it a bit archaic/cheap that they charged 2% more on such a large purchase to pay with a credit card, but I sucked it up because I didn't have $6,000 emergency money. Now one year later, I scheduled a AC checkup/tuneup appointment for between 8:30-9 am. At 9:19 am when nobody called or arrived, I called their sole contact number which sounds like an office answering machine, not a cell phone voice mail. I asked where the technician was on my message. Then at 10:00 am, one full hour past the end of the service window, I called the answering machine again and cancelled my appointment. That's really rude to be an hour late without a call to indicate that you're running behind. It says to me that your time is more important than mine. My advice, get some cell phones in your life, answer them, and be reachable. And the 2% "swipe fee" is b.s. read more

I have used SCS, happily, for a few years. So, 2 yrs ago, when a BIG name company told my elderly father that he needed a new $6k+ A/C unit for his home, I told him to call SCS for a 2nd opinion. Eric Williams came out and FIXED the real problem, (a simple switch gone bad), saving my dad thousands! The A/C is still working great ~ thank you Eric. This summer, I came home one afternoon to water in the basement from my 20 yr old hot water heater that had died. I immediately called SCS. Cory Williams came to my house first thing the next morning, installed the new h/w heater, and left the area cleaner than it had been before the old h/w heater had blown. I am so grateful for SCS. When we bought our home, we knew we needed to clean out our AC unit. The first company that came took a look, said it was "too contaminated", and left with our money. SCS came on short notice and cleaned everything quickly, and they also did not try to push UV products onto us. Most recently, I came home to find out that my AC unit had stopped working and in the dead of summer, we couldn't do without AC. We had a dead heat pump in the dead of winter and did a lot of comparison shopping with more than ten other HVAC companies to get a replacement. Cory provided a very competitive price for a full replacement of the system. More importantly, took the time to explain the trade-offs for the various choices in the hardware we might purchase. He did some research and suggested a brand that would fit our needs exactly, and quickly responded to several questions I had about the install. He and Andrew came the next day to install the entire system, checked it for proper operation and took care of us while finishing the installation the next day. I was very impressed by his professionalism matched with the "small business" nature of how he does it. Because he is the owner of the business and frequently does the work himself, you are dealing directly with a locally-owned business that stands by its work. Some of the larger, heavily advertised companies that I got quotes from have a lot more overhead and thus had quotes that were more than two thousand higher for almost the same system. After buying our house, we realized we had flooding issues in our basement and needed to do some landscaping to fix the issue. The landscapers requested we move the AC unit so they could build a platform to put it on, so that the land could be raised around it. I called SCS at 9 AM one morning after my tenants called me to let me know the air conditioner was leaking water into the house. I spoke to Eric on the phone and he was so personable and talked about the different issues I may be having. Come to find out he is the owner of SCS. He told me that he could have someone out today and then called me back and confirmed a time himself which was at 10:30. Amazing for a 90 degree day and such a relief when you have water leaking into your house. Cory came to service my unit and was even early. He was also incredibly nice and explained the problem that I was having, why I was having it and what the solution was. I then asked him if he had time would he check the unit outside for me while he was there. He cleaned it out and checked my coolant. Not a problem at all.
