So this restaurant just opened up and Soldotna, Alaska. It kept the same name as it had prior which was called Señor ponchos.. I was reluctant to go there because I had seen a lot of bad reviews in regards to it. But a very good friend of mine wanted to go to lunch and she picked this restaurant. I really feel bad for this restaurant because they're trying to do their best. They probably would've been better off to change the name because people expect the menu to be like the previous owners and that is not the case. I thought their food was good. It was hot. I was DECEIVED by the good reviews of the place from the previous ownership. This food was bland and disgusting. I ordered a burrito. It was 90% rice, 10% steak. The few bites of steak that were there burnt and lacked spice. My fiancée's enchiladas turned to mush and tasted odd. My friend's quesadilla had guacamole that was gray rather than green. I work hard for my money and I feel by eating here I was stolen from. It was $125 for the four of us to eat food that isn't even as good as Taco Bell. NEVER EAT HERE. Find a place that cares about their food. The people who own this place should be ASHAMED of the excrement they are serving and overcharging people for. read more

Mere shadow of it's former self. Started years ago by a local Hispanic man who was well respected in the community this place closed when he was forced to leave the country. Closed for many months it has now been purchased and is operated by an outfit from Texas. Not a fan. Salsa lacked flavor. Green sauce tasted like dirt. My rice was uncle Ben's bagged rice. My mom had canned chili all over her tamale. My dad's tacos were dry and had no flavor. I ordered crispy tacos and received store bought taco shells which isn't what I expected I expected home made like every Mexican restaurant has served me my whole life. I'm so upset about how this was done and set up. New management decided to buy the building and the name, keeping the good reviews up on all sites even though he doesn't deserve the credit! How unbelievably deceiving and gross. You come to a small town and change what was good just to get money in your pocket. Food sizes are terrible, taste isn't good, variety is nonexistent. This a solid 4... possibly a 4.5. The food and margaritas were good, honestly, exactly what you would expect from any given Mexican restaurant. Great chips and the service was quick, food was hot! Individual patrons would walk in through the bar and just seat themselves at a booth and this happened multiple times, leaving groups standing at the front with nowhere to sit. Weird but maybe they're cool with it. While I liked that they had a really great salsa bar and it's help yourself, holy moly it was a mess because of patrons not being respectful. Multiple different quality salsas to choose from, along with sour cream, jalapenos, onions, cilantro and lime. The water, soda and tea is also self serve. Cutesy Mexican theme throughout and holy moly is it loud in there; too much honestly! We were barely able to talk until we were just about done because it was so loud. Will we go back... sure, but I would prefer to go during off times when it isn't so busy. read more

On our way from Anchorage to Homer, we stopped in Soldotna for a break and supper. Our group of 7 (4 adults, 3 children) was seated almost as soon as we walked in. Nice Mexican restaurant in Soldatna in a strip shopping center. We sat in the bar area in a booth. Right as we sat down fresh hot chips were delivered to the table. They have a salsa bar where you can get four salsas, jalapeños, fresh pico, cilantro, and limes. I ordered the ground beef, rice, and black bean burrito. Others got the seafood enchiladas, and someone got the soup. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Margaritas were good and the 24 ounce beer cold. Our waitress took very good care of us. We stayed in Soldotna for five days. This was, without a doubt, the best food I had while I was there. It was extremely busy so a little hectic around the salsa bar, but being able to choose your own salsa is always a plus! My son got the cheese enchiladas and he said the sauce was one of the best red sauces he has had - I tried the rockfish burrito, which was absolutely delicious. Mexican food is always one of my top choices and is always a must when I'm in a new place! After fishing on the Kenai River all day, this place definitely hit the spot! I've been trying to visit Senor Panchos for a few years now. Let me say, the wait was worth it! We could hear cultural music playing from the parking lot. We knew it'd be a good vibe. Everything is colorful and bright. A different beautiful mural on each wall. Some in booths. Lots of beautiful cultural decor. Workers are friendly and welcoming. You seat yourself. You get your own unlimited soft drinks in the same area you get your own salsa. There are so many to choose from. All tasty with amazing spice. They have a great drink menu with a decent tap list. My spouses brew came in a frozen glass every time. They were very busy when we were there but our waitress kept my Mezcal margs flowing! Yes, girl! We loved the food menu. Our food was hot and delicious. It tasted fresh, like they took their time. This was the first Mexican Restaurant that offered chicken strips (as opposed to only nuggets), for my son. My spouse and I both noticed that his tamales came in corn husks. We've never experienced that in any Alaskan Mexican restaurant. Although, we are used to them being served that way at friends' houses. Highly recommend visiting Senor Panchos the next time you're in Soldotna. read more

This place was a really great find on our way from Homer back to Anchorage. Stopped in on a Saturday night and the place was packed. Waited just a couple minutes for a table before getting a nice booth. Took a minute for the service to show up, but once they did they were working hard. Server explained that they had 7 fresh, housemade salsas on their salsa bar to go with the free chips. It was fun to taste test, and all of them were really great, form mild to spicy. We probably ate too many. I ordered (and finished) a giant al pastor burrito. I appreciated that they served it with the pineapple pieces in it, like they should. Flavor was solid, though not the best I'd ever had. Of course the guac, sour cream and salsa helped sauce it up even more. My wife really enjoyed her tostada. The menu seemed pretty exhaustive, and the other reviews lead me to believe it's popular for a reason. We were really happy to find this quality of Mexican in Soldotna. Recommended. read more

Long wait for a Tuesday night. Got a booth and you get your own sauces, salsa, etc from a spot that's right by the entrance. Different than anywhere I've ever been for a sit down restaurant. First of all this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Soldotna. The reason? Definitely the blue margarita with coconut flavor and mostly the Carnitas. The carnitas are the best! Get the carnitas plate. I've ordered them all over the place and these are so authentic! Add a dash of salt and you are in heaven.! Just try it! Other delicious things to order would be the fajitas or the fajitas quesadilla. I also like the burrito with the French fries and chicken. Definitely share that with someone! They also make an amazing torta! Muah!! I do like the cheese enchiladas but you have to eat them when they are hot or else they don't taste that great. Their chicken and mushroom dish is pretty good too. The salsa bar is mediocre. I like the mango salsa and the molcajete (not sure of spelling!) salsa the best. A very solidly okay Mexican restaurant. It has the staples you'd expect and checks the boxes, but won't be very memorable or a standout visit unless it's all you've known as far as Mexican restaurants. Some positives include a DIY customize salsa/toppings option for your tortilla chips and a surprisingly decent selection of local AK craft beer to go alongside the usual suspects like Corona, Dos Equis, etc. Food arrives fast and hot, even on busy nights, so that definitely didn't go unnoticed or unappreciated! Downsides from the visit: my wife wasn't too impressed by her margarita and spent half her meal plucking a few dozen seeds out of a so-so chili relleno. Some menu options weren't available. Pricing on some things seemed a little weird or inconsistent. But...Beggars can't be choosers if you're in Alaska and looking to scratch that Texmex itch, so if you find you're in Soldotna and not south of the border so to speak, it'll do. read more

I arrived in Anchorage on Sunday and drove to Soldotna for a week of relaxation and fishing. As most of us were from Texas, the suggestion for food was made to eat Mexican food. I half-heartedly agreed as "what kind of Mexican food could Alaska have"? Boy was I surprised!!! This place is an EPIC Mexican restaurant! The food is AMAZING. They have a salsa "bar"! Mild, Medium, Hot, Green, and "Grandma's". Grandma's and Hot were the ticket! The staff is amazing as well. Very friendly. I honestly do not know how the other restaurants in town stay open! Best local option for Mexican food. Fantastic selection of beer, tequila and mixed drinks. Highly recommend the mango margarita, blended, with a sugar rim.
