I'm not quite sure how this restaurant got bookmarked by me but after a while when you have so many "to try" bookmarks you kind of forget why you marked it in the first place. The food actually isn't that bad but it is not really all that authentic Mexican food either. I got a beef enchilada and beef tostada. The beef had that taco seasoning that some people think is manadatory to have in beef for Mexican dishes which somehow will make it more "Mexican". I'm sorry. It's quite the opposite actually. Again, despite that it wasn't that bad. I ordered off of the combination menu which was confusing for some reason. Most combo menus show all items that come with it. It showed three different items on the combination I picked but then the waiter I had to pick two. That didn't exactly make sense to me. Why not just have two items on the combo menu then and three for when three items actually come with it? The salsas and chips were actually very tasty and the service was fast but I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to come back either. Just a ok experience. read more

I can't make chimichangas for myself, so I buy them from Mexican restaurants. I definitely could have made something passable as a chimichanga for myself. My boyfriend and I dropped in for dinner last night. I live just a short walk away and we've intended to try it out together for months, but life gets busy... Anyhow, we were seated immediately and after my usual hemming and hawing I decided on a chicken burrito--not the most creative or adventurous order, I know, but I'd skipped lunch and was starving and it just sounded perfect--and my bf ordered one of the same. As we waited for dinner, we slurped on delicious not-too-sweet sangria and the homemade chips. That chip basket and half of the salsas were gone in minutes...yum (especially the green salsa). I had to refuse a refill so we would still be hungry for the main attraction of the meal. The order took perhaps a little longer to fill than I'd anticipated, but when the server brought our plates I could see why. OMG. They each looked like newborn babies swaddled in tin foil and by that I mean they were #$%ing HUGE!! We opted to split one and leave the other untouched to take home for another meal. By the end of the meal I was at the point of slightly beyond full and I think my bf was about five bites beyond that after eating the end of my leftover half...plenty of delicious food for our money and the server was extremely friendly to boot (he even went so far as to sprint a block after us when we forgot our credit card). We'll be back, but will probably split an entrée next time. read more

After all the glowing reviews, my mouth was watering with anticipation. Alas, the food was pretty bland. Nice peple, good service, but... We had pollo a la crema, which turned out to be more like fettuccine alfredo...which I like, but really? Head down south and check out Coliman, Muy Macho, or the taco truck on 14th... Really my rating is a 2.5. I went to this place with my girlfriend because it had 4 stars and we were in the mood for some more authentic Hispanic food. After sitting at the table, we were pleasantly surprised to get both normal and salsa verde with our chips. The salsas were good but the salsa verde was a bit too creamy for my tastes. She ordered the enchiladas verde and I got a combo of chile relleno, chalupa, and rice and beans. The food came out in about 5 mins, which made us skeptical of the food being very fresh. The rice and beans were OK but felt like they had been sitting in warmers too long--the rice especially wasn't that great. The chille relleno was decent but seemed like a lot of the pepper had been drained of it's flavor because it had been cooked too long. The chalupa was my favorite. The shell was nice and crispy and the ingredients tasted the freshest. I didn't try the gf's enchiladas but she said "meh." Anyway, what really brought this from 3 to a 2.5 is the price. I paid about $35 (and no drinks!) for these two mediocre meals. The quality wasn't much above chipotle but was way more expensive. I think there's better to choose from in seattle. read more

I love, love, love Mr. Villa. Each dish that I've had there has been better than the last. I have had their Enchiladas, Pollo Asado, Fajitas and tacos. All have been delicious. I also really enjoyed their warm chips with two different kinds of salsa. I really love that they have mexican cokes in the bottle there as well. What sets this place apart is the service. We have always been treated really well. Any questions we have had been answered in a warm, friendly manner. The space is intimate, but I never mind it. It just makes it feel more like you're dining with family. read more

What can I say...I am a sucker for some real, taco-truck type Mexican fare. I drove by this place probably a million times thinking "This looks like some real Mexican grub"...Correcto! :-) Finally made it in for dinner Sunday evening. Wait staff is attentive and pleasant, service was fast and food hit all the right notes and warmed up the belly. This is not your run of the mill Azteca Mexican food. Everything tasted fresh, with the right amount of spice, aroma and richness you would expect from a home-like Mexican kitchen. Mr. Villa offers friendly service, delicious tortilla/chips, and meh food. What we ordered: Huevos Mexicanos (from their breakfast menu) along with a side of green chile and cheese tamale and veggie chimichanga. Huevos Mexicanos was delicious especially with flour tortillas and complementary salsas you get with the chips. I did enjoy their Spanish rice, but their refried beans were a bit too runny. (I did appreciate the cotija cheese on top.) Mr. Villa makes the biggest tamale I've ever seen in my entire life. It looked like a log dressed with some red sauce and cotija cheese. I think they use some wheat flour along with masa, so the texture was less dense and fluffier than your regular tamales, which I thought was nice. Although I have not eaten my share of the chimichanga (I took it home as I was quite full), it looked quite boring as it was barely filled with some bleh-inducing vegetables. In hindsight, we should have gotten it filled with beans and rice. Oh well, we live and learn. Unfortunately, I have to assume Mr. Villa is another restaurant that heavily depends on meats to render flavours. It is another sad sad day for vegetarians! read more

I really want to give all businesses in the Shoreline/Lake City area 5 stars. Everyone knows we need more businesses up here, not less. But the quality, or lack thereof, has really gone downhill in the years that I have lived in the neighborhood. They don't have any cheese option but cotijo here and that's because they utilize a microwave oven (by their own admission) and they don't have a cook top or grill. Now, think about that for a second... That means, no cheese enchiladas, no ooey, gooey cheesy Mexican goodness. Nachos from the microwave. And worst of all...queso fundido from the microwave. I made the horrendous mistake of ordering the mushroom queso fundido last night and if only I could turn back the clock. This was the meal/appetizer that prompted me to tell the bf that I don't ever want to eat here again. read more

No reason as only one person dining in the restaurant at the time. Compostable boxes were leaking by the time we got home (3 blocks away). Chili Relleno - nasty, greasy, horrible. Enchiladas - terrible. AWFUL sauce. Tamale - DRY, flavorless filling. Rice and Beans - tasted canned / old. Maybe an off night given the generally positive reviews. read more

I am a snob about Mexican food because I am from the San Francisco Bay Area. Maybe not a snob, but I like it done right and I know what crap is. I've been to Mexico; I speak Spanish fluently; I have a fine set of taste buds and an excellent sense of smell. I think those are all my qualifications to judge this place. It's good. It's like a breath of fresh air. Fresh air laden with chiles and cilantro. Quite pricey for Mexican fare, though. The salsas are good and the chips are festive! Their refried beans are smoky and carmelly and beany, of course. The rice is good. The tortillas are chewy and have a nice quick-sear flavor (the chips have this too). I think I am used to dry tortillas, so these seemed so moist as to be disturbing. I will have to eat them several times a week to accustom my palate. The chicken and pork were super dry, but swimming in delicious sauce in whatever form you order them, so I don't know that that's a big detractor. It IS real meat from actual trimmed cuts - so nice not to be pulling chunks of nasty fat and gristle out of your teeth. I need to try more meats, for sure. But the mole. The mole made me cry - so chocolaty and sweetly spicy and smokey. Wow. read more

This place is for real. Cute place, friendly staff, and quite possibly the BEST mexican food I have had in a long, long, time. I ordered something called Huarache with chicken, and it was amazing. The smoky charred fried masa "pancake" was soooooo satisfying from first bite to last. And my pork tamale was moist and PACKED full of chunks of pork (not that shredded funky stuff at most mexican joints). I cannot WAIT to go back there and try their other offerings. read more

I love love loved this place! I've found that most hole in the wall places are usually some of the best places to eat... well Mr.Villa's didnt let me down! The flavors were fantastic! I've found a new winner for closest approximation to Mexican food in Seattle: Mr. Villa. I've only gotten burritos to go so far: A Pancho Villa burrito, no meat and no raw onions runs you about twice what a roach coach would but it is GIGANTIC and tasty and almost reminds me of California. I'm looking forward to sitting down some time and trying out their enchiladas and picking from their vast list of tequila. The service is very friendly, but the space is small. read more

Went there tonight, was not impressed. Or server was prompt, but seemed a little a annoyed and unfriendly, but not overtly so, so maybe my friends and I were perceiving him incorrectly. Parking in a big lot available, so that was nice. Chips and salsa were acceptable. Food was not good though. We ordered and it arrived in literally 60 seconds, clearly not made to order, which I could overlook if it tasted good. I had veggie enchilada with verde sauce (I was told I couldn't have crema sauce, no explanation why, I didn't ask though... just seemed odd) and it came with beans and rice. The beans taste like mayo for some reason! Rice was probably the best part... The enchilada was very soggy and the veggies were zucchini, corn and carrots... the carrots seemed to be a strange vegetable to include, but whatever. My friends didn't care for their meals either--tamale had too much dough, not enough filling, horchata was mediocre, and chimichanga was just OK. Maybe the meaty options are better? Maybe they are inconsistent? Either way, won't be back. read more

Really wanted to like this place more than I actually do. Being from Arizona, my expectations aren't too high for Mexican food in the Northwest. It wasn't too busy so service was good and quick. Looking at the menu made me more hungry and excited. Complimentary chips and salsa were brought out. I really enjoyed the green sauce. The red sauce had a really strange flavour and I'm definitely not a fan. I tried to order some horchata which does not have free refills but they were out of it. I decided to order #4 which is a 2 item combo dish. This included a cheese enchilada and a shredded beef chimichanga. They informed me that the only cheese they had was cotija. I thought it would be fine but I was wrong. The food came out extremely fast but I'd rather it take longer for better quality. The enchilada was dry and filled with just cotija. When I think of enchiladas, I imagine them to be more saucy and cheesy. To my dismay, the chimichanga didn't include sour cream and guacamole like it said it would be included in the single dish. They did get me some once I asked but I was afraid they would charge me $5+ for it because I saw that was how much it cost on the menu as a side. Fortunately, I was not charged for that. The chimichanga itself was not crispy at all and it was filled with shredded beef that was doused in that red sauce I wasn't fond of. I did end up eating most of my food because I was starving and I generally don't like food to go to waste. I ended up putting all the green sauce, sour cream, and guacamole on top so that it would taste better. However, I took out most of the meat because the taste was just not complementing my taste buds. This place was ok enough that I would give it another chance. I'm hoping to find at least one dish worth going to this place for. Likely something that doesn't include their red sauce! read more

Some of the best Mexican I've found in Seattle! It's very unassuming; I've been past it on Lake City Way dozens of times before deciding to try it. It's a small shop; maybe a dozen tables and a small shared parking lot out back. The wait staff was quick and nice. Chips and salsa were good. My friend and I split two things to try - enchiladas mole and a carnitas torta ahogado (covered in very hot sauce). Both were delicious; I'd like to go back and try a few other dishes as well. With tip and tax, the meal was $13-14. read more

Had this delivered on Amazon restaurants, and was really impressed by the simple but delicious quality taste of the food. Everything tasted like it was made with great care and in a traditional type way. The Chicken Breast Mole, rice, beans, and tortillas were all delicious. The corn tortillas were extremely fresh, soft, and tasty. I will use the great team of Amazon delivery and this restaurant again as they brought happiness to my home. A small improvement I would like to see is a more generous sizes of salsa to go, but maybe I can request that in the special delivery notes. I really appreciate a Mexican restaurant that still provides nice fresh chips and salsa as hospitality, especially on delivery. That is doing it the right way, and an example for others. read more

If you are looking for a place that gives you optimum privacy and quiet, do not go here. However, if you are looking for some of the best hand made tortillas, fun house band, and original Mexican dishes DO come here! Mr. Villa is a small location, but the flavor packed in their dishes is big. Service is great, super attentive severs, and did I mention the flavors are AWESOME here?! I got the cheese enchiladas and wow..totally shocked me! They were topped with not just regular shredded cheese, but a yummy, soft white cheese that made them seemingly melt in my mouth. Prices are a little on the high side (for Mexican) but if your looking to support a delicious local joint, take a visit to Mr. Villas. Mondays include free, live music! read more

The chips and salsa are addictive. The food is meh. Its on a corner with parking around the back. The room is small, and dark despite lots of windows. But those chips and salsas are really yummy. Service is excellent. Too bad that the food is a bit overpriced and sadly lacking in flavor. I joked whether they had turned down the flavor for the gringos - mistake if they did. Rice was weak. Think Chevy's if Chevy's used real food instead of food products. Sadly Jalisco is gone too. I love Mexican food. If it wasn't so nutritionally deficient, I would only eat chips and salsa for the rest of my days. As a result, I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by it's C&S. Oh, and it's cheese. Mr. Villas is on Lake City Way, very close to I-5. The area is a cute little pocket of shops. If you didn't know to look for it, you probably wouldn't see it. Upon arrival, we are seated usually right away. It is for this reason that I never wanted to give a review of Mr. Villa's. I'm quite selfish like that. But I digress. The place has some cool art on the walls. The tables and chairs are the same you'd find in a Bingo hall but it's not a concern to me. I only really care about the quality of the chips and salsa. Oh, and the cheese. Chips and salsa are brought right away. They're warm. The green salsa is super hot and the red is for everyone else. They're wonderful! Not slimy or pickled, or anything. My only issue is that the baskets of chips are too small, and I usually have to get another one, which I can't finish. That makes me feel wasteful. If they would just give more chips up front. Also, the salsa bowls are so small, it's a crime to my heart to actually think that two or more people could share them. They're literally like 1/4 cup or less each. Dig out your measuring cups. You'll see what I mean. I wish Mexican restaurants would give a salsa bowl to EVERYONE at the table. I hate sharing my salsa. And finally, in Texas many Mexican restaurants include a bowl of pickled hot vegetables. This place does not do that, but it reminds me of spots in Houston that did. They should. It would be more "authentic". My partner usually gets the beef steak dish. It's really good. I've even tried to eat the jalapeno that comes with it, but I think it's for decoration, because that bugger is HOT HOT HOT. Over the years (probably 4 years so far I've been going), I have tried the enchiladas, tacos, burritos. The cheese is good! Here's what I define as "good" at a Mexiraunt: Not too much, not too oily when melted. That's it! Some restaurants cover up their food with cheese. This is gross. And, the cheese is often a cheap variety, and the oil that separates at warmth rises to the top. It's yuck. Mr. Villa is NOT like this. They use some cojito cheese, too, (i think that's what the white cheese is called) which is not so oily. The portions are not so big that I feel I gained 5 pounds eating there (though all mexifood makes me gain 5 pounds, I suspect). The prices are good, and the staff is always super nice. I was craving a margarita all day, and passing this place I decided to stop in. The people were all so friendly. It was sort of like you didn't know who your server was. We are relative newcomers to Seattle (moved here in June 2011) and don't know a lot of the Mexican restaurants here yet, so all I have to compare to locally is the Mexican chain restaurant at Northgate Mall (which is good but not great) and a popular Mexican restaurant in Madison Park (which I love). But I grew up with Tex-Mex in the Texas Hill Country and Sante Fe/Sonoran style in Colorado. This place compares favorably with most of the really good Mexican restaurants there and is certainly better than the chain at Northgate or the place in Madison Park. I took the family for an early dinner, so there was not much of a crowd, but I can imagine that it gets pretty noisy and crowded when the main crowd arrives. It's a small place with lots of hard surfaces, so the little bit of noise that we encountered echoed and was not muffled at all. It's cute and comfortable, but I would classify it just above a hole-in-the-wall. Not necessarily a bad thing, just don't expect sparkling clean or bright furnishings. I will be back because of the food and service, though. I had chicken mole enchiladas, my wife had the tamal and chile relleno, and the kids had beef enchiladas from the kids menu (daughter's was shredded beef and son's was ground beef). I am a mole fan and while this was not the best I've ever tasted (that honor belongs to a place in Colorado Springs), it was a close second. My wife loved the tamal but I didn't hear her comment on the chile relleno. The shredded beef in my daughter's enchilada was tender and tasty--spiced quite nicely. The margaritas are generously sized and made the way you're supposed to make them, with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice only--none of that nasty sweet syrup that most people use. The other thing I liked is that they brought out the kids' plates first and gave us a chance to get them all prepped before bringing our plates out. So FINALLY my wife and I both got to eat from a sizzling hot plate. As we were leaving, both the wife and I commented that we ate way more than we wanted 'cause it tasted so good. It's close to home so we agreed that it will be our first choice for Mexican from now on unless we want to venture further from home. read more

Service was fast and people I interacted with were nice. The chicken and shredded beef inside what husband and i got were both good. The chips were quite plain. The chimichanga was crispy enough. The big offense tho, was the state of the burrito my husband got. See the pic i posted. Wtf? They're not the only ones to treat the burrito this way but why? Our first visit left us with mixed feelings about Mr. Villa. I though that the margaritas were "just ok," not great. The first basket of chips (not homemade) was not warm, but our second basket was?? Both salsas were again, "ok." We started out with Queso Fundito with chorizo, which was pretty much average fare, but the 4 corn tortillas that came with it were better than average. The service was good, but I thought that the prices were a bit spendy for what you got and compared to other Mexican places. My two enchilada plate was $11.00. I ordered cheese enchiladas, which was delivered with rice and *whole* beans. The spousal unit ordered the tamal, which was delivered with *refried* beans?? Neither of us specified which type of beans when we ordered. It might have been specified in the menu or maybe that is the "house rules" on beans. Just wanted to make you aware. My enchiladas were served "lukewarm-ish," not hot enough for any of the cheese to have melted. :-/ My rice was equally "lukewarm." The whole beans were the warmest thing on my plate. As a point of comparison, at my favorite Mexican place (El Toreador in DT Redmond), I'm used to receiving my food on a plate that is so hot you can't touch it. :-) The tamal was pretty good and was served **hot!** It wasn't *award winning," but it was probably the highlight of our visit. The refried beans had an unusual taste to them. Not quite smoky like El Charro's (SeaTac), just "different" and IMHO a bit odd. I normally will not leave any refried beans behind, but this time I did. As noted in other reviews, the ingredients were relatively authentic and for the most part okay to good, thus the 3 stars. However, the execution was flawed and overall the place left us, well... a bit "lukewarm" and not likely to return. Unfortunate. Went here on a date last night and couldn't eat my Mole Poblano. First bite of chicken I had was rubbery and chock full of gristle, so much so that I couldn't even chew it without feeling like I was about to wretch. As someone whose mostly worked as a cook, I knew exactly what they did and how they did it. The chicken was obviously precooked, had sat around too long and was nuked in the microwave for order. I had to spit it out. The service itself was good, the waitstaff was friendly, and my girlfriend enjoyed her enchilada, so maybe it's just me. But for 13 bucks I expect better. If you think this is good Mexican food, then you have only eaten terrible Mexican food. read more

My coworker and I had a rough day at work and drooled over the thought of some delicious Mexican food. She mentioned wanting to try this place and to our pleasant surprise it was a great experience! The waiter greeted us at the door and gave us our choice on where to sit. They brought over a delicious red homemade salsa and a green salsa that had just enough cilantro to keep me from talking for a moment :) we noticed it was a little difficult to read the menu because of the romantic dim lighting but that didn't bother us at all. I ordered the chicken burrito and enchilada combo and she ordered the shredded beef burrito and enchilada with mole sauce. It doesn't normally come with hat but when he asked him about the mole sauce substitute he was happy to accomadate. Great customer service! When the food arrived we both mentioned we may have eaten too many chips but I ended up eating more then what I thought I could. It is not your traditional Mexican food there, the flavor is more inviting and captures your taste buds. I took a small box home, it was just as good the next day. I definitely recommend you to try this if you are craving mexicanfood in the Lake City area. read more

I'm pretty sure I'm obsessed with this place. A small local restaurant that's close to where I live. The food is really authentic tasting and probably some of the best I have found in Seattle. I have very high standards for Mexican food especially living most of my life in the south close to the border. This restaurant serves amazing tacos. My favorite is lingua tacos. My son is now in love with those tacos and I have to get him his own plate otherwise I won't get any! The staff is really nice too. I feel like I want to go there every weekend because it's so delicious; I have to pace myself. i'm so glad to have found a good Mexican restaurant close to where I live. read more

We stopped for the first time tonight. My wife ordered a burrito and it came out un rolled as she had to roll it herself, very little to almost NO meat. She could have just ordered a salad with a tortilla. Any time I go to a Mexican restaurant and order nachos they come out piled high, these were flat cheesy and lots of grease. Waiters checked on us frequently but, im not impressed by far. Its a nice place and I will say that the staff were friendly and attentive. Im not sure if they saw me yelping while at my table..lol..
