I went for about a 1.5 mile walk to get here. The grieving exercise was worth every calorie because when I got there, I was greeted by a very kind hostess, waitress, and appetizers and entrees. They were busy, but our waitress had wit and did everything in a timely manner and without breaking a sweat. The bread rolls were warm and the appetizer we got, the 12 oysters, were some of the best oysters I have ever had. My entree, the Nantucket Boulibasse (I definitely did not spell that correctly) was out of this world! The mussels, the clams, the scallops, the shrimp, the swordfish, and the lobster were all cooked to perfection in a delicate sauce and with a crispy piece of bread to soak up that flavor in the sauce I hadn't tasted before. Everything was unbelievably fresh and cooked to perfection. To top it off, for dessert, we splurged a little bit and ordered the brownie with ice cream, whip cream, and caramel. The brownie was softened warm. The ice cream was cold, creamy, and not too sweet (my favorite), and there was not too little or too much caramel and a moderate amount of whip cream. In respect for other reviews -- yes the lobster bisque is very good and the lobster tortellini are excellent. The main concern I have is for the service in regards to a specific bartender. He is as arrogant as he is socially clumsy. He doesnt know if he is at The Sea Grill to work or to pretend he is rubbing elbows with his pals. He is an older balding man of normal height and weight (early 50's I would guess) who works the main bar in the dining room. If he is there either get a table or leave. He seems to think he is best chums with everyone --- the truth is if they wanted to sit and jibber jabber with him all evening they probably would have invited him out socially. Regardless you will either be ignored or get such sub par service from him that your experience will be compromised. I have had this experience more than once so I can confidently assert that this is the case rather than experiencing an off night. read more

We finally decided on this place for Saturday night, after a lot of research. The hostess was rude (young and inexperienced). She refused to seat us anywhere but the assigned table, that wasn't appealing, despite an empty restaurant. (we arrived for a very early dinner). We re-located to the bar and the rest was fantastic. Bar staff was attentive and had great food and drink recommendations. The lobster bisque is the best I've ever had. We also had the swordfish and free form ravioli. Both were large portions and very good. Atmosphere is relaxed, but warm. Prices are typical to Nantucket. We spent $200 on dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine and a few beers. If we return to Nantucket, we'll eat here again for sure. read more

This place has it all. The bar is very friendly, the drinks are strong, the food is always good. I have never had a bad meal here. The clam chowder is the best on the island. Plus the raw bar is great. I started with a dozen cherrystones, they were so good half way through I ordered another dozen. The Crusted Cod is the best, I might order that every time I go there. My friend had Clams and Fettuccini, said they were great. This place should be on everyone's to go list. The best thing about the place, they have free parking! And lots of it. read more

My family dined here while to celebrate two birthdays in our family. Atmosphere is good. Food is solid. Bread before dinner was pretty basic, nothing special. I had lobster bisque for an appetizer. It was very tasty...skimpy on the lobster meat, but tasty. My husband had the deconstructed ravioli and he loved it. I had the broiled cod. It was ahhhmazing. Light, flaky, cooked perfectly and topped with a wonderful crumbled crust. My daughter had the poke bowl and she raved about it. My 13-yr old son gobbled an entire lobster. It was very meaty. The kids thought the fries were a little heavy in texture, but that is a personal preference. Drinks were great. And the service was A+. With great chowder comes great responsibility. I like to get two or three quarts of the stuff for take-out; it's usually chunky and delicious. However, with my most recent purchase of two quarts, the chowder was seriously lacking in substance... it was closer to a broth than a soup. Went here for lunch, after a wonderful meal several years ago. The wait staff was polite for us tourists. Noticed a much warmer welcome was given to the returning, local customers. The food here is amazing! I had the parm crusted swordfish and it was one of the best fish plates I have ever had. I also had the stuffed quahogs, which were the best stuffers I have ever had, and I eat a lot of stuffers. My wife has a gluten allergy and they were very accommodating and her dish was equally as amazing. The portions were very reasonable for the price. The restaurant has a great atmosphere. Came recommended from our hotel as a local spot for great seafood in relaxed environment. A change of pace from eating in town. Note to self...stay in town and enjoy the many lovely restaurants there..you will not be sorry. The Sea Grille gave us the impression of the Red Lobster of Nantucket. You'd be better off parking in the lot, heading to Stop and Shop and eating popcorn for dinner. Yes...it's really that bad and we never made it past the hostess. Made a reservation a month in advance of our stay. Only time available was 8:30pm. That should have been our first sign to make other arrangements. Asked about outdoor seating...they have an outdoor patio. Sounded nice and casual. Outdoor enclosed patio is really the entry way into the restaurant and outside bar with tables for large crowds. Steamy temps and no air circulation. If you are brave enough to try this place, when making a reservation do not ask about patio seating. Make sure your reservation is inside. I can't make any comments concerning the food we never got that far as we left. It was a blessing in disguise as we dined in town under the light of a full moon and enjoyed a lovely dinner taking in beautiful Nantucket. read more

This place is a phenominal find in Nantucket - it's mid-island so not convenient unless you have a car and thank god I did. I ate here almost two nights a week. They have great cranberry nut bread. Their beet salad with fried cheese and perfect greens/dressing combo is to die for. Their lobster bisque is the same as the brotherhood with that puff pastry top with dill - amazing. And their open loose ravioli is absolutely delish - VERY FRESH!!! The bar service inside left a lot to be desired, and sometimes it's particularly hard to even get a seat anywhere at this crowded restaurant - but there's plenty of parking and the prices for appetizers and salads are reasonable for Nantucket. Dudes, so conventional a place you will die of boredoom. But if gran or mother-in-law or the graduate want to eat at a safe place there you go! Lobster Bisque served in a heavy overdone pastry. The mussels in wine that I had, a few were bad with that funny after taste. Entrees of fish come with twisted prezel like mashed potatoes (oh come on) but on the whole the Seagrille is that dependable place, lack luster place. However, more recently The Seagrille has opened up a patio area that is favored by the young and with it crowd. The food has become glorious--amazing Mussels in white dill sauce, wonderful Ahai Tuna cocktail served with incredible pomme frites, freshest of rawbar appetizers, entrees that are generously proportioned and not to leave out the vegetable department with uniquely flavorful dishes like the steamed spinach. In fact I could devote a whole page to the veggies and appetizers alone. There are grilled entrees that exude flavor. Prices are also reasonable for what you are getting, in fact a bargain, when you compare to other places. The Segrille is always crowded so reservations are a must. Just a small note on desserts,my dinner partner raved about the lemon tart since he is in the food business, and I had one of the best chocolate mousses this side of kingdom come!!!! So I have changed the rating from the original a few years ago, to the now unhesitatingly deserved five star. read more

I recently ate here on a Monday night and the service was HORRIBLE. The waiter had 5 tables and out of the 5 tables only was paying attention to two of the tables. Never greeted us, or asked how our food was/checked to see if we needed anything. The two other tables were being ignored as well. The manager (I assume) was the one to take our order. But again, no one asked if we needed anything throughout our entire meal. I expected more from this restaurant, especially after reading all the reviews about excellent service. When I go out to eat, I am not picky, but this was beyond ridiculous. If I am paying $30 a plate, I expect better service. Such a shame. I also found the hostess to be incredibly rude and snobby. Keeping in mind that this is Nantucket and not, say, Manhattan, this is the best of the bunch on this island, IMO. You can spend more money at other places around the Main Street area but not get as good a dining experience. Moderately priced with terrific seafood choices. Their free-form ravioli is a great meld of seafood with a bit of pasta. Fried clam dinner was excellent--not too greasy or overly breaded. Their chowder could be thicker but is flavorful and better than other chowders I've tasted on the island. Came here twice in the past two weeks and will come back next summer. read more

I had ridden my bike by this place for years and only thought it was some old school overpriced fish and chip place like so many on this island but was suggested by my folks that it was great. As always, your parents are never wrong:) Grilled Salmon on menu was outstanding, coconut panna cotta fantastic. Lobster mash potatoes off the hook! Only moment for pause was ceviche that had absolutely no citrus, lime elements- perhaps they should rename the dish mixed seafood sashimi in that it was just raw and packed together with avocado chunks. Also the side order of chips with truffle oil had been dragged thru the salt mines for way to long as it is the reason I drank twelve glasses of water at dinner. Service excellent and amazing in that they tolerated asshole in table next to me who put his plate on the floor when he finished. I am so disappointed that the SeaGrille has changed. It has been my long-time favorite since I like to keep my money on Nantucket. Its prices have gone way up. Food is still great but worth it? Their famous Lobster Bisque, topped entirely with puff pastry, is now just Lobster Bisque with a quarter-sized lump of dough floating in it. I am a scallop connoisseur and recently had the scallops at SeaGrille. They tasted great, but one practice that marks a great scallop dish from a mediocre one is whether the kitchen removes the little muscles that hold the scallop in the shell. They are chewy and rubbery, and spoil the experience of a great scallop meal. The great restaurants remove them; Sea Grille did not. Enough said. read more

Table of 5 underneath air conditioner dripped on us throughout the meal. Was served a fish dish with lobster in it as one of the ingredients despite explicitly saying I was deathly allergic to shellfish. Response from waitress, maitre d, and chef was that lobster was not shellfish and I should be able to eat it. Sent meal back, was served what I thought was a version of the dish without lobster. Lo and behold, it had lobster in it again! Same response - lobster is not a shellfish so you can eat it! They'll kill someone eventually with their arrogance and ignorance. read more

My wife and I went here last night (4/17/15) and it was fantastic. The meals were absolutely amazing.. The taste was as good as the presentation. I had the 6oz center cut filet and it just melted in my mouth. The presentation was amazing. My wife had the grilled lobster with fettucini and sauce, again the presentation was amazing and the taste was as good. The service was a tad slow which is why it gets a 4 star rather than the 5 but overall I would highly recommend going to this restaurant if you're on the island! read more

Came here on our honeymoon dinner, worst service I have ever experienced... We didn't get serviced at all, once I said something the waiter brought over two EMPTY wine glasses... 10 min later without any drinks or service at all, went and asked for a manager, who was probably the worst thing that ever happened to the restaurant, she was rude and when I told her how long we waited for drinks she said "she highly doubted that".. We had a nice meal, but it was a bit expensive. I had grilled lobster, which must have been pan fried, as there were not any signs that it was cooked over a grill (nor was the flavor grilled). My wife had a free form ravioli with lobster, scallops and shrimp. The "ravioli" turn out to be one medium-sized sheet of pasta, and the "lobster" was a tiny piece of claw meat. Let me start out by saying my daughter and I are world travelers and have eaten a lot of fresh seafood in our lives. We've had three meals at the Sea Grille over the past seven years and each one was a slightly different experience. We are from Colorado, though I'm originally from the West Coast and have had my share of fine seafood. The first time we ate at the Sea Grille was about six years ago. At that time we had the lobster bisque, a rich, savory soup with a delicate, flakey crust. Our calamari was divine and memorable. My main course was a bit too heavy and rich, but had I not already eaten our rich appetisers my palatte, and stomach, might not have been on overload. I no longer see the dish on the menu but it was assorted seafood served casserole style and laden with a thick, buttery sauce. My daughter had the fish of the day - a delicate white fish. Suffice it to say, we left the restaurant quite full. Yes, it's expensive there, but in truth most restaurants on Nantucket are rather steep in price and we certainly felt we got our money's worth. We vowed to make it a tradition to eat at the Sea Grille everytime we came to the island. Our second visit to the Sea Grille a year later was a disappointment, possibly because our expectations had been blown up, up, up since we'd last been there. We once again ordered the calamari and it lacked our first plate's WOW factor. I can't even recall our main courses. We decided we probably wouldn't eat there again, as it's a bit of a hike if you walk it (which we did both times), and we didn't feel we got our money's worth that time. We left feeling deflated and sad. The Sea Grille had slipped from its pedistal... We didn't think we'd ever be back... A couple years later my daughter and I were in town for the Christmas Stroll once again and decided to try a restaurant closer to the town center. We thought we made reservations at one restaurant - a local favorite - only to find out we'd inadvertantly called the wrong place, a Mexican cantina of sorts that was sister to the restaurant we thought we'd called. We're from Colorado and can have great Mexican food anytime. We wanted seafood! We did decide to honor our reservation anyway, but upon being seated, we found ourselves placed in a corner by the kitchen door where frantic servers were hustling and bustling by us in heavy traffic mode. That would have been manageable, but we were also seated next to a large party of very loud, happy and intoxicated Stroll revelers. Add to that the fact that we sat for some ten or fifteen minutes without being waited on, so we decided to leave afterall. But where to go? We were hungry and tired. We didn't feel like walking too far as we'd arrived on the 9:10 a.m. ferry and had been walking non-stop all day. We were only there for the day and we were taking the last ferry off the island that night. We wandered into a shop across the street from the Mexican restaurant to ask for suggestions and the proprietor suggested the Sea Grille. My daughter and I looked at each other and shrugged. If we could even get a reservation at that late date we'd do it, only this time we'd take a taxi. We called the restaurant and a harried but nice gal took our names and said she'd do her best to squeeze us in if we could be there pronto. Within a half hour we found ourselves seated near the bar. We once again ordered the calamari (we had high hopes it would recapture the deliciousness of our first plate and it did!!!). I ordered a succulent sword fish steak that will always hold a place in my "Best of the Best Hall of Fame". I don't even recall what my daughter had, but she had no complaints. All in all, our meal, our service, and our experience were all stellar. I know when anyone eats out they are striving to find the perfect scenario - quality food in a great atmosphere. Sadly, chefs have their good days and their bad days, just like us. At the Sea Grille we've had three different experiences. Two of the three were delicious and memorable. I urge those of you who had a mediocre meal there to give it another shot. I'm so glad we did. read more
