Avocado tacos are the first thing to come to mind when I think of Seabirds, but my recommendations now have changed since it's been on weekly rotation for breakfast with my brother. Although he plans to eventually try everything off the entree menu, I've hopped around the appetizers and brunch menus to try something new with each visit. It's amazing that nothing has failed me yet, so I thought it was time share! If I didn't give up caffeine for Lent, I would have indulged in every last drop. The coffee at Seabirds is bottomless with room for raw sugar and sweetened soy milk. However, the Birdy Mary and Cha Cha Kombucha (which is available on tap) may be great alternatives to start your day. Made with Seabirds' house-made Bloody Mary mix, the Birdy Mary was garnished with fried pickles, a pepperoncini, green olives, wild rosemary, lime and a celery salt rim. A word of precaution would be to mix it up before taking your first sip. You may either get a mouthful of vodka or just the mix, which delivers quite the kick both ways to awaken any soul. If you like it spicy, this may be the blend you're looking for. Moving onto entrees and other menu items conquered. Let's start with my brother's choices: Chorizo Tamale: House made nut chorizo, cream cheese and spinach tamales, roasted carrot and habanero sauce, chipotle sour cream and cilantro; serve with black beans and rice (Gluten Free). Biscuits, Gravy & Crispy Tofu: Rosemary cheddar biscuits, mushroom gravy, crispy tofu and steamed lacinato kale. Green Eggs & Avo Toast: House scramble with pistol and sautéed spinach, whole wheat Ciabatta toast with smashed avocado, house-made lemon salt and charred broccolini. Served with fried potatoes, but GF options are available. Here's what I've had: Chilaquiles Stack: Fried tortillas, black bean smash, house scramble, pasilla pepper, house-made ranchero sauce, basil-avo sauce, corn pancake, butter and cilantro. Served with strawberry arugula salad (GF). Purple Taquitos: Purple potatoes, chipotle sour cream, fermented curtido (Salvadorian sauerkraut), almond feta and cilantro. The small plate comes with 3 and it's gluten-free. Butternut Enchiladas: Butternut squash, spinach, black beans and mushroom enchiladas topped with a roasted Pasilla pepper sauce, almond feta, Seabirds sauce and cilantro. Served with a strawberry arugula salad and sliced avocado. (GF) The entrees and brunch options are pretty filling, but one day, I'll leave room for dessert! Had brunch here with family. Seabirds brunch is loved by many and they are very good with consistent quality control. My favs are flourentine and biscuit bomb. The chocolate cake is very decadent and delicious- hard to believe it is totally plant based! So moist and chewy - it has a good chew for those wondering. The chaffle was not s huge fav because had crystal sugar on it. The breakfast tacos were delicious and had the unusual addition of a few pomegranate seeds. This is my second time here.. and both times my boyfriend and I had server, Adam. Adam is amazing. He takes care of us very well. Knowledgeable and super chill. Takes time to make conversation with us. For the first time, I'm actually tasting flavor. The food is phenomenal. The presentation and service is lovely. I've been to this location twice now, once for a late lunch and more recently for brunch. That Birdy Mary had been calling my name for months, and I finally got to partake. For lunch, I had the purple taquitos and the kimchee and beer battered avo tacos. All yummy. For brunch, I sat outside on their lovely patio and had the brunch tacos, which were delicious, and of course the Birdy Mary. It was so pretty, nice and spicy, and almost an appetizer on its own. Having another opportunity to try some of their other food and being sincerely wowed by their service, I must give Seabirds another star! Here are some of the new things that I tried: Green eggs and toast: An interesting flavorful "egg" dish that did veer a little close to the salty side but was definitely good. Because they are a vegan restaurant, they do not use eggs but a tofu substitute and mixed with the pistou, a sauce of garlic, basil and olive oil, to give it an inherent flavor with each bite. It was good that there were nice pieces of spinach mixed to kind of mild out the saltiness. It also came with a nice piece of whole wheat ciabatta toast that was slathered generously with avocado that had a slight kick to it with the lemon salt. Chorizo tamales: Amazing little corn pockets of vegan goodness that surprisingly kept well with refrigeration! The server had accidentally put in the wrong order so we were given this as a complimentary dish. After being burned by bad service at other restaurants, I must say that Seabirds offering a complimentary dish was awesome. What made it better was that the tamales were super good! Because this was given after we had already eaten, I did not eat it until a few days after, but with a little microwaving, they were still good! The house made nut chorizo had the nice roasted flavor with a light heat that one would expect from a normal meat tamale. It was enveloped with the slightly sweet corn outer layer with a layer of cheese and roasted carrot and habanero sauce. Would get these again! Chaffle: I believe that this is one of the best desserts I had and I am surprised that it was vegan! Knowing the difficulties of getting a good dessert without butter or cream, I was floored by how good this was. The base of the chaffle is a mixture of a churro and a waffle - a nice tough cinnamon exterior with a soft interior shaped in a waffle. It is simple, but the mixture of spices is spot on. When topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, it is the counterbalance to the intense flavors and the heat that come from the chaffle. All of this is drizzled with chocolate sauce and chopped pecans... It is simply amazing. Again, I can not say enough about the amazing service. It was really a simple mistake and they could have easily just hurried our corrected order, but they found an extra opportunity and offered it to us. Parking is still hard as it is limited but it is possible to find parking available on the streets nearby. Overall, Seabirds is top-notch vegan food that is definitely worth trying! read more

Seabirds is located in The Lab, a hipster "anti-mall" with yarn art pieces, painted metal barrels, and other items that you might find at a hippie encampment in the middle of the dessert. But, despite its kitschy surroundings, Seabirds is anything but alternative: this is a quality, modern restaurant that just so happens to serve vegan fare. One of the great things about Seabirds was their attention to both taste and texture. All of the dishes I tried balanced textures (crunchy, soft, smooth) in a way that didn't seem forced or heavy-handed; it all just worked. For instance, the amazing beer battered avo taco ($4 for 1 taco) featured a hefty piece of avocado battered and fried to perfection. The softness of the avocado nicely contrasted the crispy, flavorful coating while the special Seabirds sauce provided extra moisture and flavor. Though not my favorite, the barbecue jack sliders ($8 for 2) featured a nice barbecue sauce, meaty jackfruit, and a soft bun that emulated the real deal. And the "eggs" in the Green Eggs & Toast ($12), were soft, fluffy, and delicious thanks to the addition of pistou (garlic, basil, olive oil). The included fried potatoes added just the right amount of salt and crunch to the dish. "What is a chaffle? And, how can I get one?" Those two questions should be at the tip of your tongue when coming to Seabirds Kitchen, as the chaffle ($9) - a churro waffle hybrid drizzled with dark chocolate sauce and topped with vanilla coconut ice cream - is one of the best vegan desserts I've ever had. Crisp yet doughy, spice-laden yet refreshing, the chaffle elevated what was already a great meal. Definitely save room for dessert if you're checking out Seabirds! Service was spectacular. Our waitress was friendly and helpful from the moment we were seated. When there was a slight mistake with one of our dishes, she quickly had the issue rectified. And, she offered us (free!) tamales to-go, as it had mistakenly been placed into the ordering system for a different party. Score! If you've never tried vegan food, Seabirds is one of the best places to take the plunge! Tips: + On a nice day I would recommend sitting outside on the patio, as the restaurant has somewhat secluded picnic tables amidst a nice array of desert plants. + The Lab has two private lots, but those can get quite full. Really great all vegan spot! This restaurant is located in the lab anti-mall. The inside is on the smaller side, but there's a nice patio area outside (heaters included). I've tried their korean bibimbap bowl, mushroom and avocado tacos, and house burger. I'd definitely like to come back to try their breakfast. The bibimbap bowl was packed with flavor! Fresh from all the veggies, slightly spicy, sesame oil, and had a good sour kimchi flavor. I love how they fried the kimchi to make it crispy. The mushroom taco was decent, but there was way too much pickled cabbage. The avocado taco was much better. The house burger was also really good, probably one of the best veggies burgers I've had. This is one of my favorite restaurants! Such great food and I like the rustic feel of the patio. Please open one in Ladera Ranch. :) I've loved everything I've tried on the menu, and I've ordered nearly every option. I miss the chocolate chip banana nut bread! Fresh flavor with lots of cabbage, but it's only 1 taco Butternut enchiladas: 4/5 probably my favorite dish I ordered. Three enchiladas with a sweet butternut flavor. Purple taquitos: 3/5 it's basically a taquito with mashed potato inside. The taquito was a bit hard and too crunchy for my liking. The food was not bad, but also not very memorable. We came around 8pm on a Thursday night and there was a 30-45 minute wait. They text you when seats are available. Our server was very nice and gave us some recommendations. Bibimbap - I thought it was okay but it was a lot so definitely worth your money! Seabirds Kitchen was once a vegan food truck before it found its home in Costa Mesa's infamous anti-mall The Lab. I've only gone twice, and would go more if my bank account could afford it, but it's worth every penny because you are truly paying for great quality food with natural ingredients. I had a little fun with our waitress who was friendly and a good sport. I asked her to tell me what the most visually appealing item on the menu is and I would try it. Like any good waitress should, she replied, "Well I would say everything on the menu is visually appealing but I would recommend the Baby's Biscuits and Gravy." While this item on the menu would have never stood out to me, I had just gotten paid and was feeling adventurous, so I did as I said I would and ordered it. To be safe, I also ordered a small plate of Purple Taquitos. After all, I didn't want to starve if the recommendation turned out to be a bust. I started with the Purple Taquitos and was not disappointed. The chipotle sauce that decorated the top of them was a treat and gave it a nice spicy kick. When I was feeling more adventurous I finally tried the biscuits and gravy and was surprised to find that it wasn't bad at all. I like the biscuits, gravy and tofu pieces that adorned the dish. Although, I didn't care for the kale that lay on the bottom of the dish, this is simply a personal preference and distaste for kale. Other fun vegan items on the menu include, BBQ Jack Sliders, an assortment of taco choices, and a chaffle (yes, a churro waffle, ladies and gentlemen). Vegans are so damn creative with their food substitutions. Food was delectable. BBQ JACK SLIDERS $8 had bbq jackfruit - what a refreshing twist on pulled pork sliders. I couldn't even tell the difference. Sweet and tangy from the slaw; savory from the caramelized onions; sour from the dill pickles. CAULIFLOWER CEVICHE $7 also had me fooled. I thought I was eating fish the whole time. Freshly made corn chips were perfectly light & crisp. Unfortunately, service was absolutely horrific. It took nearly 10 minutes for me and my friend to be noticed by a server; and another 15-20 minutes before getting our food. We only had a one hour lunch break from work & ended up spending double the time waiting. Servers not only did not acknowledge us, but were so unapologetic about it. Nice spot in Costa Mesa for vegan and vegetarian options. They have brunch availability for weekends only. I had the beets me burger for this trip visit and I was very satisfied with my choice. I was a little concerned when I saw the burger had almond butter on it but I was happy I kept it on. It adds a different texture and flavor to the burger and it pairs well. Faves (hard to choose but..) - avocado toast and the side arugula salad that came with the enchiladas (lol and the enchiladas too). First time here. Excellent find. Not a vegetarian however we came since one of our friends was vegetarian. Awesome restaurant. First of all, parking can be a bi*ch because it is located in the center of The LAB plaza, near Urban Outfitters, where there is already minimal parking for The LAB during busy hours. Because it was past most office hours, we were able to park at Pep Boys and walk over, which is probably an excellent decision on our part. The ambiance is modern. It is a long rectangular store that has approximately 8-10 tables that seats about 4 people each. The waiters/waitresses greeted us promptly and took our names down. We waited for about 30min before being seated. We ordered the Romana Salad, Cauliflower Salad, as well as an IPA beer. The Romana Salad was absolutely delicious (I added avocados to it), coming with mixed greens, strawberries, pistachios, goat cheese, and basil. Healthy yet tasty. I can't believe I haven't reviewed Seabirds yet. Seabirds Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants in Costa Mesa - and in California. The restaurant started out as a food truck, and then became a popular staple in the the LAB at 2930 Bristol St. You really can't go wrong with anything you order here. I love so many things on the menu, and I'm not even vegan. We go here probably more than any other restaurant I can think of. Friendly, casual place with nice patio area. The avocado tacos are really good, along with the always dependable and amazing grilled cheese! Love the Holy Smokes Bowl, made with brown rice, bbq jackfruit, black kale, broccolini, pickled red onion, coconut bacon, Seabirds sauce, and gluten free barbecue sauce. Another favorite is the Bimbimap Bowl, made with tofu, brown rice, steamed kale, korean jackfruit, fermented cauliflower, fried kimchi, crushed peanut, gochujang, aji yolk crema, and green onion! The BBQ Jack Sliders, made with shredded bbq jackfruit, Seabirds coleslaw, caramelized onion and dill pickles and served on two whole wheat slider buns also has been one of my favorites. I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time and finally got a chance to check it out ! Woohoo ! I always get excited when I discover new vegan joints. Holy Smokes alright ! I took a bite out of my bf's bowl and wished I ordered his. Packed full of flavor and the jackfruit has a similar pork texture so if you like your meat this imitates that. I loved the flavor combinations and the signature Seabirds sauce and bbq sauce were like crack ! ADDICTING !! Burnt Brussel Sprouts - roasted to a crisp and tossed with fried garlic, lime and dijon mustard - Okay I was thinking this would blow my mind since everyone raved about it, but it was just okay. Maybe because I eat brussel sprouts often and I've mastered this veggie ! It was still good and the 'burnt' flavor was a nice touch and plentiful ! Great for sharing ! Would I order again ? Meh..I might pass on this and get the jackfruit sliders instead. Salted Melon Salad - grilled salted watermelon, heirloom tomato, romaine, black kale, pistachios, mint, almond feta, orange basil vinaigrette - Never attempted to taste grilled watermelon and this was unique ! Perfect addition to the summer menu ! Watermelon is super refreshing !!! This salad was simple in flavor and since I ordered only half it was a perfect light meal. I enjoyed the pistachios on this as well. I do wish there were more toppings and less greens. Then again, it IS a salad. Haha ! Coconut chocolate chip cookies with coconut sorbet - the coconut sorbet won me over !!! YUM !!! I can have a BIG HUGE BOWL of that and I'd be a HAPPY CAMPER !! I'm actually drooling as I type this, because it was love at first bite !!! I'd definitely come back just for this ! FYI: coconut sorbet is an Italian specialty handcrafted locally by Vitaly Café. The coconut chocolate chip cookies were 2 for $5 so we had that warmed up with the sorbet on top (see pic). Too bad the cookies were a bit hard and dry. Great food, patio is great in a sunny day!! I particularly like the warm cauliflower salad!

I can not recommend this place enough for vegans and non-vegans alike! Seabirds is one of those vegan restaurants where they're not trying to veganized all non vegan food like "vegan hamburger" or "vegan tacos", etc. - it still manages to be somewhat healthy and allow you to enjoy the complexities of vegetables! For nonvegans, you won't even realize you're in a vegan restaurant because the food here is so satisfying! I came with my mom for Sunday Brunch and we got the Purple Taquitos, Biscuit Bomb, and Kimchi Bowl. For one thing, all the food here is filled with so much flavor. The Taquitos is a must! The Biscuit Bomb is like a McDonald's Sausage McMuffin, but a million times better - I was never a big fan of McDonald's McMuffin anyways, so even if you didn't like that McMuffin, still try this! The breakfasty spicy taste of the tempeh sausage is balanced out with the sweet maple syrup. Kimchi Bowl was also an explosion of flavors - cauliflower kimchi (unusual!), some sort of bbq "meat", fried kimchi, ugh, I want more! As for the ambiance, great lighting both inside and outside. This is the first vegan restaurant I've been to and the experience was quite nice... Get the Fried Avo Tacos. They were really tasty. The combo inside the taco was good and delicious. I loved their grilled cheese. Yummy goodness. We also go their Brussels sprouts which were ok. I'll prob not get them next time. Their Holy Smokes Bowl and Jack Asada Tacos were meh for me... Maybe I'm not a fan of Jack Fruit... The service was attentive and good. A+ in that department. My first vegan experience was a good one. I would prob eat here again if I'm in the area! :) read more

They currently only have outdoor dining in their patio and I was seated right away. My friend and I were starving and we ordered the Beets Me Burger and the Warm Cauliflower Salad to share and it was more than enough for the both of us, we even had leftovers to take home! I want to make it clear I am not Vegan and I very much enjoyed the both meals I had here. I have to admit that the first time I eat here I didn't know it was vegan when we sat down. One closer look at the menu and it was too late, the server was there. The second time, you ask? Brother's pick for his birthday and I'm not mad. Everything I tried, both my choices and my companions, were delicious. My favorite has to be the purple Taquitos, crispy and top with a "creamy" sauce, pickled onions and cilantro. The quesadilla with "barbacoa" was very flavorful. And the mushroom tacos were very well put together. Unfortunately I can not get in the Kombucha wagon, or the hop based wine and ciders. So as for cocktails or boozy drinks, there isn't much of a choice but they have a very yummy blueberry lemonade. I can have that over and over again! To top it off the service is very friendly and knowledgeable. They were both able to guide us thru the menu and suggest great options. I have no complains on coming back here and trying more new items, I will definitely recommend anyone to come and try it. read more

The food is amazing. Seabirds uses quality ingredients and you taste it in your meal. This used to be my favorite vegan restaurant, however, my favorite dishes from Seabirds are no longer served at the Costa Mesa location and only served at the Long Beach location. read more

Great vegan restaurant that don't simply offer garage, unhealthy, vegan options. Highly recommend this place.
