4 stars for a vegan restaurant - I'm a meat lover, and for a vegan place, they definitely do their job in creating quality bites for the vegan crowd. However, I would not choose this place over others that serve meat, only for when you are feeling in a meatless mood. We got the corn chowder to start, which had some crispy lentils and crunchy scallions to top. Of all three items we got, this one was the one I definitely think is up to par with a typical restaurant. We got the Avo taco as it came highly recommended, along with the grilled mushroom taco, which came with free chips and salsa since it was a Tuesday! I truly thought the grilled mushroom taco had more of a savory flavor than the top choice avo taco, which we thought was rather mushy and blander. I'm a fan of corn tortilla, but my dinner date seemed to think the tortillas were too hard for her taste. Finally, the veggie burger was listed on the menu as top 20 in America so we had to try! I really liked the thick cut pickle slices, and the patty was pretty solid. Overall, a good burger, and comes with paprika-sprinkled thin cut fries and some type of gourmet ketchup which we really enjoyed. Would recommend if you're around the Lab area! read more

The food is delicious They have really good coffee and if you go for brunch you can cup is bottomless! There are two types of non dairy creamer to choose from: soy vanilla or almond coconut I got the biscuit with vegan sausage and it was incredible. The tempeh is made really well and it's very flavorful. Get it with vegan cheese I tried the burnt Brussel sprouts too. They were great. They're deep fried and then doused with a delicious sauce The waffle wasn't that bad. The texture was ok I got the kimchi taco too. It's just one taco FYI. It has jackfruit and fresh kimchi in it. The shredded jackfruit is smothered in a tasty sauce and the shredded cabbage on top reminds me of coleslaw. They were a decent size and would consider it a light lunch if you only get the slider. Beer Battered Avo Taco ($4 per taco) - Looking at the review and having tasted it myself, this is probably a widely popular item. On top of a large slice of avocado, there are heaps of cabbage to give that nice crunch so it's not all mushy texture. Natural Cut Fries - There wasn't anything so special about this for me. He loves the flavors the chef creates in their salads and appetizers he commented repeatedly about the combination of flavors the chef creates at Seabirds. The restaurant is pricey but I think it's truly worth it. The ingredients are high-end and the food is organic or very high standards. The chef creates some amazing desserts please try one of the homemade pop tarts. I took my daughter with me for lunch, she was a pop tart fiend as a child, (I used to have to hide them so she wouldn't eat them all at once) LOL, so I bought several for her to try. The server suggested, warming them up and my daughter said "she had never tasted a pop tart so good in her life!!!" We tried cinnamon brown sugar and an apple brown sugar pop tart. My husband went wacko for the carrot cake bites!! I have a picture for you of the desserts at the very front of the restaurant they're absolutely delicious carrot cake balls are Yum Yum delicious and get my vote as well! I'm in love with their food and I'm not even vegan! -Old Town Grilled Cheese (5/5): I don't know what they use to make their cheese but this was sooo good and it tasted exactly like regular grilled cheese! -Purple taquitos (5/5): I believe they used purple yam for the filling, but it was really good! I really loved all the toppings on top and it had a really nice crunch. -Kimchi taco (5/5): I love kimchi and I love tacos, making this one of the favorite things I ate. The jackfruit they used in the taco was deliciously seasoned and tasted like actual meat! -Beets Me Burger (4/5): I've had a variety of vegan burgers and this was one of the better ones, the patty wasn't too mushy and I loved the arugula and pickles. My friends and I drove down to So Cal from the Bay Area for Expo West weekend and after checking into our hotel we were hungry and in need of some vegan food. So off we went to Seabirds to try it for our first time. We came on Thursday night and the parking lot was pretty full. Luckily, we were able to get one of the last parking spots. The shopping center, called The Lab, had some pretty cool looking cafes and shops and Seabirds was located towards the front of the shopping center. The space was nice and they had an inviting patio area that looked perfect for warmer weather but since it was a bit cold we sat inside. Their menu is divided up in sections: small plates, entrees, tacos, salads and desserts. We opted for the purple taquitos, burnt brussels sprouts, creamy tomato soup, butternut enchiladas and a couple of the tacos - jack asada taco, beer battered avo taco and grilled mushroom taco. Everything was so tasty but our favorites were the enchiladas and taquitos! Dinner definitely hit the spot and it was too bad we didn't have room to try the dessert. Okay, so I feel that my review is very biased since all I ate was a very boring salad. Came here with my girlfriends last week and wasn't in the mood to really eat much. I ordered two half salads and they didn't wow me in any way, but everyone else loved their meals! The kale salad needed more massaging and only had two small croutons. The other salad (can't even remember what was in it except for garbanzo beans) was just eeeh. I was so excited to revisit Seabirds since my last time like 10 months ago. We always pass by Irvine area on the way back up to UCLA and finally got the chance to stop by for dinner. Wasn't expecting it to be crowded on a Monday night but it was! Kind of missed when it was more of a secret gem but all the more to them for becoming more popular. Unfortunately it seemed to have lost its sparkle, at least for this visit. Our server did a wonderful job accommodating my food allergies and specific substitutions; however, the staff seemed more impersonal than I rememeber. There was a certain charm that Seabirds used to have and now seemed to have faded - that hole in the wall character. As for the food, some of it or components of dishes were delicious while others were average. I recommend trying their cauliflower soup - creamy, robust, smooth goodness. It's even better mixed with their tomato soup! But why is it $8 for this small bowl of soup? The entrees were nothing bad but nothing outstanding. I asked for the Holy Smokes Bowl with arugula instead of the rice. Instead, I was given more kale, so in the end, it became a cornucopia of kale with some brocollini and topped with coconut bacon/jackfruit. The bowl tasted disjointed and needed like a mix of veggies instead of all kale. My mom ended up ordering the burger and while I do give them credit for the ingenious idea of slathering almond butter on the beet, chia patty as the sauce, I was not impressed with their substitution for the bun. The patty literally sat on a mound of kale. It would have been nice to have it wrapped in lettuce or even in a cabbage leaf! She also asked to substitute the fries. Apparently a side salad is a handful of arugula ... nothing else. I'm hoping that next time will be a better experience. read more

We started following Seabirds when they were a food truck, then we saw them on the Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network, hoping they would take it to the end. Several years ago, they gave up the food truck and opened the restaurant at The Lab in Costa Mesa. The food is just as good as it was on the truck. The take fresh ingredients and create the most flavorful dishes that are vegetarian, vegan and healthy. The staff is always friendly and fast. The place has a very modern and industrial type feel, with a nice outdoor patio. We have tasted and tried a good portion of the menu and I can honestly say there isn't a dish we didn't love. The avocado tacos, yum! The mushroom tacos are fairly spicy but again so good. The grilled cheese is made without cheese, but you would never know it and the sandwich is delicious with a touch of pesto. The brussels sprouts are roasted and fabulous. Seabirds is great for those who have gluten allergies, dairy intolerance and most food allergies, there is something for everyone. The parking at The Lab can be tough, the lot is small. If you can't find a spot, try the small lot around the corner or the street parking. read more

Although I was ecstatic to hear that they were now a restaurant, I wasn't so thrilled that it was located at the LAB. Don't get me wrong, I love the LAB, but I just hate the parking. I can go to Seabirds for the Chaffle alone. A churro and a waffle? Two of my favorite things mashed together, with ice cream, walnuts, and sauce - YUM! It's nice inside and the servers are very friendly. Pick your own seats and then a server will come take your order at your table. Here's what we ordered: Buffalo wrap: very spicy for me! It was pretty good, but the buffalo sauce wasn't close to what it should taste like. Jackfruit taco: I liked the flavor but it was too overpowering. Too much cabbage slaw so I brushed it aside. Really felt like I was eating shredded pork, looked and felt like it, which wasn't appetizing to me at all. Avocado taco: I liked this taco much better, had a good flavor, although it was fried it was still pretty good. Mango lemonade: server told me I got the last drops of this and I could tell as it was watered down way to much. I returned it and got water instead. One of the many things I love about Seabirds is that their menu offers the opportunity to try multiple dishes. For example, you can buy one fried avocado taco (don't leave without trying one; they are to die for!) and blackened brussel sprouts. Okay, so that happens to be exactly what I had last night. Let me tell you about these brussel sprouts...they are so magnificently seasoned. All I could recognize in the flavoring was very thinly sliced garlic, but there is a whole lot of other great stuff going on in each bite. My husband must have the gravy fries everytime we make it to Seabirds. The serving of fries is very generous. Now, here's an insider's tip for you: the gravy fries aren't always on the menu, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Especially if they have the biscuits and gravy on the menu, they're quite likely to throw them together for you. There is a great outdoor area to eat, in addition to the comfortable indoor seating. This place was soooo good. I had just landed at John Wayne after a terrible four days of food options in Denver, and I was STARVING. I literally lost a few pounds from my lack of food (definitely unintentional). I told my husband I needed good vegan food, and I needed it fast. Seabirds had good reviews, and was less than ten minutes from the airport, so already a win. I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup, and my husband ordered the Mac and cheese, grilled cheese, and a side of fries. My grilled cheese was so perfect. The right amount of cheesiness and tang that is necessary for a perfect grilled cheese, and they nailed it. The tomato soup was hearty, and my husband stole some of mine! He enjoyed his Mac and cheese, which had a little hint of spice in it. The fries were seasoned perfectly and were nice and crisp as well. For dessert, I got the Whiskey Peach Crumble, and oh my word. Not too sweet, and the whiskey provided a nice warning finish. It was so perfect, and I was so stuffed! Because I'm greedy, I ordered a pop tart to go. The pop tarts are HUGE.
