The storefront and truck give MoCo residents a local place to get blue crabs at a reasonable price. I purchased from both locations multiple times. They could be great but they settle for ok. The problem is they pre cook the crabs and then reheat them when you order. This happens everytime regardless of whether they are busy or not. I requested steamed to order and was refused. As a result, the crabs do not stay hot for long, are sometimes mushy, and just don't taste as good as freshly steamed crabs. read more

I've been here a few times. Always for take out. This is the closest "seafood market" to my home. It's a no frills place but does have a decent amount of space if you want to dine in. In the past I've had fried whiting, fried shrimp, fried scallops, clam strips, hush puppies, potato salad, rice, macaroni and cheese. The whiting has always been decent and typically that is what I stick to and let me tell you why....hush puppies were dry, I've had better clam strips from the frozen food aisle, macoroni and cheese was bland, rice was bland and potato salad was growing fur! The previous owner gave me a free bowl of chili with my order one night and although it was very nice of him it was waaaay too salty to eat. Had a hankering for fried fish on Monday and didn't feel like driving far. I found out it's under new management since March. I knew something had changed when I walked in and almost every table was full. Menu is about the same with a couple of new items, the only one I remember is plantains. Nice spot for seafood at a great price. The flounder was the best I've had in the city, and they've got their own killer version of Old Bay. The decor and huge tubs of beer on ice transported me back to Virginia Beach. I also like the fact that you pay after you eat. read more

Went here to pick up some fresh steamed crabs and shrimp, and I'll definitely be back for a meal sometime. The large male crabs were 38/dozen, but the small were only 18/dozen. We opted for half a bushel for about 8 people for just under 100 bucks, and we were pretty happy with the results. I haven't tried their platters or sandwiches but I will soon enough. read more

Three words... Awful, awful, awful! This used to be my "go to" place for seafood in the area, but after today, no more! I can't honestly even give the place a 1 star rating based on the food I received today. Where to begin... I ordered in advance: crab cake and scallop combo, with potato salad and hush puppies for side; my sons ordered fish, shrimp, with greens and fries as sides. The first disappointment was a large burnt crab cake, small scallops and hush puppies. Not at all what I am used to free Seafood in the Buff. I asked that the crab cake be redone ... The cook almost burn it again! When we got home and tried the food, the nightmare continued. The crab cake was mostly filler and extremely salty. The hushpuppies were awful and tasted as though fried in rank oil (as did all the seafood). The potato salad had no potatoes... It literally was a mushy mess of tart relish. The collard greens were drowned in a tart, vinegar pepper sauce...yuck. Into the trash it went, along with the potato salad and hush puppies. The entire order was an expensive waste of money. Worst crabs I've had in a long time. Paid top dollar for large "meaty" crabs, as Mori described them on the phone. Got them home and found only a couple of large ones. The rest were tiny and not meaty at all. They were very light and several had cracked shells, so I'm sure they were not alive when they were cooked. Most were missing claws and the few in the bottom of the bag didn't nearly add up to what was missing. Will never go here again! read more

I'd like to say this place is "hit or miss" depending on the night etc. But since I live around the corner it has been a definite "miss" for several years if not more. If visiting friends ask about this place I redirect them to the H-Mart across the street - their raw seafood is the freshest anywhere and they have a little café inside serving sushi and other seafood/Asian specialties - no (cooked) crabs though :( You also can't get a beer at the H-mart while waiting. read more

This was the worst seafood I have ever had. Were to begin; you walk into the place and there are flys flying everywhere, the prices are outrageous for what you are getting. When I received my food EVERYTING was OVER COOKED! Nothing had any flavor, my scallops tasted as if they had been sitting out for days (they had a SOUR taste), the crab cakes were as dark as hamburgers with no flavor (the bun was the best part of the sand which), the so called fresh Cali Mari was also over cooked and tasted like a rubber band. I've had two purchases from Seafood in the Buff in Silver Spring. The first was half a bushel of steamed crabs to go and they were satisfactory. The second was a bushel of live crabs. When we got the crabs home half of them were dead. I called them back and they said the crabs died on the way to my house (I live less than a mile away) and I shouldn't have bought live crabs on such a hot day and hung up on me. So we took the crabs back to Seafood in the Buff and asked for replacements and they refused. So while trying to be reasonable we offered to pay them $20 steam some replacement crabs and they agreed. In front of us the manager took the DEAD crabs we'd returned, poured them in a pan, put seasoning on them and put them in the steamer. We told them this was unacceptable and dangerous and in the ensuing discussion he said he routinely steams dead crabs and he didn't understand what the big deal was. I recently went by the silver spring location to get crabs. Being a Maryland native, I have to say that I was thoroughly unimpressed. I ordered 1 1/2 dozen medium males. I've have to bet at least 8 of them were cooked dead (if you know crabs, when you open them they should not be mushy and smell like formaldehyde). I would like to reiterate what over reviewers have said about Seafood In The Buff's failing in customer service. When I call or go to the store with questions about the seafood I must press hard to get any sort of answer. Recently, when I called to ask some basic question (size, cost, ect.) about their dungeness crabs, the person on the other end dismissed my questions and said that I need to come into the store for him to tell me the cost. He ended the conversation by cutting me off, saying bye, and hanging up. we purchased half a bushel of female crabs for my husband's birthday party & the crabs were old, they were watery & the crab meat flakes very easily. First let me start off by saying.... I have worked in crab houses and grew up in baltimore. I know the difference between good and bad crabs. After opening a few of the 2 1/2 dozen we purchased for $139 we realized not only were the crabs paper thin (which I can deal with if they taste good) the smelled like ammonia. I called to ONLY let them know they were bad and people could potentially get sick, never once asked for a refund, I was asked to call owner. When she picked up the phone she was anything but pleasant. Rude and extremely poor customer service. The first thing out of her mouth was that she was NOT giving anyone a refund. I tried to let her know I was calling to make them aware that the crabs were bad and she started yelling that they weren't bad, they were not light and she wasn't listening to me anymore and then hung up on me. 1. If they are light that's fine let people know when they call. 2. If someone is calling to tell you crabs are bad, apologize and ask what you can do to make it better. 3 never hang on up a customer who just spent $139 on your shitty crabs! read more

Really I'd give them 2.5 stars but that's not an option here. Food's pretty good but way too expensive for what they serve you. The price range on here is accurate, but it's twice as much as the "online menu" you see with a internet search which came as a shock. They need to update their website w/ a menu and current prices instead of just basic info w/ their locations & phone numbers. Haven't been there in years (when we'd last visited prices were reasonable & food was pretty good) & decided to get take out from there. We got a catfish platter & flounder platter (the fish platters consisted of 1 large piece of fish w/ potato bread and 2 sides for ~$12 each...pricey & barely satisfactory). Coleslaw & hush puppies were good & it's tough to mess up fries. However, the crabcake & scallop platter (for ~$22) I got for my wife was a huge disappointment. It was a flat deviled crab patty (that looked burnt but that might be normal for deviled crab) and about 6 small scallops. We were going to return it for a refund but the manager let us keep it & gave us another flounder order w/ more scallops to "make it right". I give them kudos for their customer service. read more

Their Germantown location was shut down for opening NFL weekend. I spoke to the owner who said she would comp me an order of calamari if I went to the Silver Spring location. I advised her that I was looking for XL live crabs and she said they have all sizes. The reason this isn't 5 stars is because I arrived at the Silver Spring location and they didn't have ANY live crabs yet and the shipment wouldn't arrive until around 2:30 PM and it was 11:30 AM. They said they had some large cooked males and females. Not wanting to drive to the Warf in DC I decided to give it a try so I ordered 1 Doz Male and 1 Doz Female for $45/Doz each and was also given the Calamari as well. The service was gracious and speedy. The crabs actually turned out AWESOME! Not a single bad crab in the bunch. No mushy meat or rotting smells. I was very impressed. Also, a large majority of the crabs were VERY large and on a normal day would probably go into their XL category. Well Done! read more

I purchased a dozen extra large crabs from Seafood In The Buff Germantown this past weekend. The larges were $55 per dozen and the extra large were $85. I figured that the extra cost would result in some nice crabs. I was dead wrong. Not one of the crabs measured more than 6 inches from point-to-point and as a life long Marylander, this means large NOT extra large. Several did not even make it to 6 inches and were 5.5. Used to visit the crab truck on the side of 355 in Germantown. However, over the years the service as deteriorated along with the selection of crabs. They are over priced for what they sale. Small to medium sized crabs, I'm talking 4-5 inches, should not be marketed at large! Also the crab soup is a joke and I can cook better steam shrimp at home. This is my first time writing a review on yelp--that's how terrible this place is. It got me to sign up for a yelp account to post a bad review. Ordered "fresh" steamed blue crabs, which were supposed to be a mix of mediums and larges. These crabs were not only small, but they were very light--not much meat in them at all. Also, the crabs did not seem fresh in the least, with an off smell, grayish meat, and brown/green mustard in the middle. We ended up throwing away almost half, because we were afraid of getting sick.
