By far the worst restaurant experience in the hamptons - the service sucks, the bar takes almost an hour to get you your drinks. When we went, the forecast showed rain so we called ahead and asked if there were indoor accommodations. The host let us know that they did...but when it rained they crammed everyone into a bar with no tables, threw the food in to go boxes, and didn't provide any service. I'd rather them give an honest answer. Front desk staff was also incredibly rude. When in Montauk, go to eat at Duryea's and Crow's Nest. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

Let me preface this review by stating that I am from a small town where a primary source of funding into the economy is from tourism and I completely understand the up and down side to the tourist vs. local relationship and how frustrating it can be from both perspectives. Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting Shane, who described himself as a general manager at Sole East as well as close friends with the owner. I began speaking with him when I heard him saying (very loudly) disparaging things about the owners at Ruschmeyers, Surf Lodge, and Sloppy Tuna. We are all entitled to our opinions about the "experience" of places like this but the "facts" that he shared about these people and their actions and relationship to Montauk were completely off-base and without merit. One of his "facts" was that Surf Lodge was purchased for 900 Million Dollars. Riiiiighhhhht. This was one of a dozen assertions about people he admitted he had never met where he questioned their character, called them scumbags and completely disparaged their names with information that was as ludicrous in nature as Surf Lodge being worth 900 million. He then launched into a diatribe about how horrible all of us Manhattanites are. This is where it gets interesting. I of course made all of the logical points - Sole East likely makes a majority of their hotel revenue off of people like me, who live in the West Village and summer in Montauk. I pointed out that although we certainly respect the local culture we are coming here for an escape, to relax, to unwind, which is the nature of many beach communities. This is when he stated definitively and repeatedly (and still at a volume where you could hear 2 blocks away) that (this is his emphasis, not mine) HE AND THE OWNERS OF SOLE EAST DO NOT WANT ANY WEST VILLAGE OR MANHATTANITES VISITING THE ESTABLISHMENT. THEY DO NOT WANT US STAYING IN THEIR HOTEL, THEY DO NOT WANT US EATING AT THEIR RESTAURANT AND THEY MOST CERTAINLY DO NOT WANT US DRINKING AT THEIR BAR. EVER. I promised to keep my west village self away and he then requested that I inform ALL OF THE REST OF MANHATTAN that they SHOULD NEVER COME TO SOLE EAST. Again, the caps are his emphasis, not mine. So Manhattan, you've been warned. Sole East doesn't want your money, your business and their manager, Shane, would prefer you take your business elsewhere. This guy was so insulting i'd recommend you heed his advice. They don't deserve our $$. read more

I've checked this place out a few times this summer. Going solo has its perts and setbacks but going to Sole, I feel one with the party. Its a chill vibe, staff is supper friendly and accommodating. The seating is plentiful, beach beds, chairs and tables and wait staff to serve ya wherever you are on the property. The music is eclectic, mostly ambient, electro pop. The menu is fine nothing special but I did have the fresh mozzarella and tomato which was good. Came with bread and butter infused with balsamic vinegar and oil, yum. Also tried the white sangeria which wasn't bad. The prices are generally the same anywhere, expensive but equal to what you'd pay in the city. The bar can get a bit crowded even around 630pm. I went one night for music and I don't know if its protocol out here or what but they have flyers/promos saying drs at 6pm, yet the band doesn't start for hours! That's a bit...hmm...rude. Overall a good experience but nothing special. read more

New Chef (Adam) is talented and creative. This year the food shines and shines. Fluke Crudo was exceptional but you MUST try their New England Clam Chowder...Award winning and just right consistency...I'd call it medium. Any fish dish at Backyard is worth trying. The Golden Tilefish was perfectly cooked. Scallops and Tuna, perfect. Right from the sea to your table. Don't leave Sole East off your list if great seafood is your thing. read more

I came here with a party of 8 and the location was very cool. There were a bunch of white tables outdoors in the middle of a courtyard. The only thing holding this review back from 4+ stars was the service. There were clearly too many tables for the kitchen to handle. 2 of the 8 appetizers didn't come out but the ones that did were delicious. The entrees took forever to come out as well but the food was delicious as well. The server was gracious enough to remove all of the appetizers from the bill. My two friends and I went to have lunch here on a whim. We called ahead and the person on the phone said told us there was no crowd and to head on over. For not being very crowded at all and having a small party of 3 people, the service was ATROCIOUS. We had to ask for our water three times and finally my friend got up herself to bring us water from the communal water jug they have set out for patrons. Only when the waitress saw her get up did she actually go and get us water, so we ended up with 6 cups. We then ordered 2 hamburgers, one medium, which ended up being fine, and the other medium rare, which was inedible. My friend had maybe two bites and left the rest of the very raw meat on her plate. The food took a long time to come out as well and then it arrived undercooked! The waitress asked if everything was ok while eyeing the plate of disgusting raw meat. Of course it was not ok. We did not want to make a big thing of it, especially because our meal was taking a ridiculously long amount of time and we just wanted this fiasco to end, but this should have been addressed by the waitress. The last straw was they added 20% gratuity to the bill, which I realize is standard for hotels to do. But this was a very generous tip in our view for very very poor service. The dining area is pretty, but that is the only nice thing I have to say about this restaurant. read more

We got the lobster pasta. It was awful. Undercooked pasta and two tiny pieces of lobster in it. The manager walked away as he told us he'd take it off the bill, which sounds like he already knew the food here was awful. Such a bummer because it's a super cute place. read more

Per the hostess, they were seated because they were assholes. We were not treated like human paying customers and you would think we were getting a hand out. Don't waste your time or money here. Sat at the bar and had a lovely meal and some drinks. If I was just rating the food I would give it more stars - including our incredibly lovely and hospitable bartenders - but the glasses above had flies in them (likely somewhat unavoidable) but should have been removed once we pointed them out and then the manager was kissing up to a liquor distributor and between the two sales people and two employees from Sole East we had to move down two seats at the bar with our dinner plates to get some more space and away from their loud conversation that should have taken place somewhere else considering it was 8pm on a Friday. Looked forward to returning to this restaurant after COVID as we had a wonderful meals there prior. Could not have been more disappointed. The Monogolian Rib appetizer tasted like Chinese Spare Ribs. The tuna poke was undistinguished. My wife's linguini with clam sauce, came the first time without one clam. The second time, tasted like butter and cheese. Just awful. She returned it as it was inedible. She played it safe and ordered what I had, the hibachi salmon. Her salmon came over cooked and the soba noodles were tasteless. Quite a departure from the same dinner I ordered earlier. The worst was that my daughters called the restaurant to treat us for Father's Day. They had the card number written on the reservation sheet for all to see. A PCI (Payment Card Industry) violation for those that understand. And then they could not process the transaction. The food is fine and the decor is nice. The service is awful. Their reservation system doesn't indicate if you prefer outside or inside dining so when an unexpected rain storm hits on MDW they don't know which reservations need to be canceled and instead chose to rush everyone out the door in order to turn over the table. Our meal, including a steak that needed to be cooked to MW, was brought out so rapidly that we were finished eating and could have been out of the restaurant within 40 minutes from arriving. We decided to stay for another two rounds of drinks and planned on leaving after the second, but the hostess very rudely and very directly told us we needed to leave because she needed the table for someone else. No offer to transfer the tab to the bar or comp us a drink for the inconvenience of moving, no discreet placing the check on the table or asking how our experience was, etc. For a location like Montauk where 1- discretion is paramount and 2- money flows east from a very small social circle in NYC, this restaurant should understand how all of my friends will hear how disappointed I was with the classless and tactless service. read more

The food was delicious. You could not ask for a better meal. The Portuguese octopus in the Mediterranean plate were very tasty. As a main dish the monkfish steak and swordfish or heavenly. The problem was the service it was the worst I'd experienced in sometime for a Saturday night. Not enough help to accommodate. Over an hour wait for appetizers and another 45 minutes for the main meal. Took 30 minutes to get a glass of water. I'm not sure if I'd come back or not. Beware. read more

Unfortunately, despite the beautiful outdoor space, my friends and I did not enjoy our dinner at Backyard. The service was desperately lacking class-- which was surprising to us considering how expensive the menu was. We had one waiter try to up-charge us a full dinner and an extra side. When the manager came over to figure out the misunderstanding, he worsened the situation by calling us "kids." We are in our late twenties and clearly have the financial stability to enjoy a pricey meal. Don't call us kids. It's demeaning. While the ambiance was nice, there was nothing else that would entice me to return to Backyard because of our rude waiter (who was wearing sunglasses post sundown) and his manager. read more

Awesome seafood, great atmosphere. We sat outside, it was beautiful. After dinner we stayed for an outdoor concert in the bar area. Sole East is also a hotel. The food's a little pricey but its worth it. The downside to the entrees is that you need to order sides separately, and they run anywhere from 8-10 dollars each. read more

I've been to the Backyard at Sole East many times over the past couple years, and this summer, and while the experiences have certainly varied, the Backyard is always just beautiful! After reading sarah p's review below, I may have to reconsider future trips (being a fellow manhattanite and west villager, of which they apparently aren't fans???), so therefore, figured I may as well write a review now, in case I actually do avoid it in the future... The drinks - especially the bloody mary - were AMAZING last summer, haven't quite been as good this summer, but I also think that varies WILDLY depending on who the bartender is. Last weekend some margaritas people were having at the bar apparently looked phenomenal (the guys went in and ordered, so i didnt see them), but someone told them that the wrong bartender was making theirs (so theirs, consequently, did not look so good). The bloody mix is homemade, so maybe its just off in general this summer (last summer, the bartender, nick i believe, was great, and told me how he made the mix, so maybe he's no longer there...i havent seen him this year), but the staff was incredibly accommodating when we came by after rain this past weekend, and took all the sofa chairs back out so our party could sit outside by the pool area. The mussels were cheap and apparently good (I didnt have any), and the rose is affordable compared to what I'd imagined a glass would be (cocktails are pricey). Weekend nights used to play techno (YES!), and could be either packed or vacant...so it seems hit or miss with regards to the nightlife. I'd love to come by and use the pool at some point, despite not being a fan of "beds," and dogs are allowed (I always see them here but never bring mine), so do intend to actually bring ours by for a visit one day! now if only my boyfriend would be the designated driver so we didnt have to cab from east hampton, as thats the primary reason we dont make it here more often! read more

Had a great experience here. Everything from booking through the end of dinner was fantastic. Finding reservations with only a week's notice for 13 was very challenging. Some restaurants nearby gave me a lot of attitude, not backyard. There was a mixup with the initial reservation, it was lost. When I called the day before to confirm and it was discovered to be lost, it was immediately rebooked without a problem. The service was amazing when we arrived. Food was delicious. When we finished and asked our server to take a group pic, he walked us all the way into the lobby 'for the best light.' It was an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend this to anyone. read more

I've been to the Backyard Restaurant multiple times and have only good experiences. However, my last visit was disappointing. We were a party of nine girls on a special night out. The restaurant itself was very accommodating when making the reservation, even when I switched the night last minute. Even though they were very busy on this Friday night, it is nothing they haven't seen/experienced (and should have been prepared for) on a summer weekend. We waited 35 minutes for our drinks, we all ordered sangria, which assuming was pre-made and an easy pour. Both red and white sangria was not good at all, which was frustrating after waiting so long. One girl has to ask twice more for her drink which was forgotten. The food and drinks came out at roughly the same time. The food all around was extremely disappointing! Half of us ordered the lobster gnocchi which was flavorless and a bit fishy. Not fresh tasting. The salad was missing the fresh beets which was a selling point for me. I believe someone else ordered the tuna appetizer and was turned off as well. We also had to ask twice, two different waiters for our vegetable sides that were forgotten. As I mentioned, I have had some pretty decent meals here - but for our special occasion this was definitely a bust. I would hesitate making a reservation again. I must point out that our waiter was working very hard, running back and forth so I am not sure if this was just an off night, short staffed or a bad performance all around. read more

Squid, Clam Chowder & a Salad all were amazing and prepared perfectly. They served us bread with butter, roasted Garlic in a balsamic glaze... That didn't stand a chance. Pretty setting but that's about it. Our waiter was a complete ass and tried to double charge us for an entree and a side we didn't order. When we asked him about the side of bok choy we didn't order he said he was trying "to look out for our health". Seriously?!!
