I found Sebastian through Yelp. The reviews seemed great so I figured I would give him a call. On the phone I mentioned I wanted low-lights in my blonde hair as a transition into fall. When I came in I was sat in the chair for 40 min. past my appointment time. I chose a color I liked during this time. He started coloring my entire head this color, not just chunks. He explained after the fact that this is so I can keep the color all over the same. He should have warned me, but I accepted this because I was into how it came out. He warned me that I would probably need to come back to get it darkened in a couple weeks, but he would only charge me $20. After a week and a half my red hair was golden brown. I came back in and asked him to redo it. I asked for permanent color this time, but he would not do it. He also told me all about a date he had the night before in which the woman wanted to sleep with him but he wasn't into it. I feel like he regails you with stories to make you think you're his friend. It's just like, dude, I'll pay you more if you just make my hair look good. He charged me $27 instead of $20. I gave him $40 total out of good faith and he said I should come back on a certain day to get a special shampoo to lock in the color. On my mother's recommendation, (ladies- dont do this) I ended up in some trendy salon, with inflated prices, (as is with most high "quality" salons in Orange County) mediocre service, and a haphazard cut that left my bank -65$ and me, a very sad panda. Was the cut awesome? Yes! Probably the best cut I've ever had. He didn't ask me how long I wanted my layers though, he just kind of cut where he wanted. I took a big risk by going to someone new, because only 2 other people have ever touched my hair, but it was a good experience. I wasn't very happy with the price, $80, because he didn't even comb it out when he was done washing it, just let me put it in a bun, and I also had really bad dye spots on my face. Sebastian is THE BOMB! I had to look for another hair dresser because my old one charges an arm and a leg ($75.00) for a medium length haircut. My sister recommended Sebastian because he was getting lots of props through yelp...as well as getting a great cut from him. First of all, he WAITED. He normally schedules his last appointment at 6:30p and i asked him if i can make the appointment at 7pm as i work in Costa Mesa and live in Irvine. He gladly stayed! Yay! I just moved to Irvine from Seattle, WA and so looked on Yelp for a good hair salon. With such high ratings, I was excited to meet Sebastian. I called and came in a few hours later. For first timers, the Salon is called Ethan James Salon in a same plaza as Buffalo Wild Wings and it's next to a Vietnamese restaurant. Sebastian is very knowledgeable, experienced and accommodating. He is very nice and funny. He charges $70 for a haircut and color which is very reasonable. You can always make an appointment very quickly with him. I had my hair dyed and cut by him before Thanksgiving. He did an awesome job. He talked a lot about Vietnam with me because I was going to Hanoi to visit my husband's family and have another wedding over there during Christmas break. He told me to come back a few days before I leave for Vietnam so he could do a touch up and add a toner for very cheap. I was super busy traveling before my big trip so I couldn't stop by. My sisters came to visit me for Spring break and wanted a haircut and color to look different. I recommended Sebastian so I called him on Sunday and he told us to come in the next day. When we arrived, he was waiting for us and was ready to go. He was full of compliments and even made us laugh with his dancing. I don't think he remembers me because he thought I was a girl that works at the Apple store in the mall? Maybe he mistaken me for someone else? We talked a lot the first time but it was 4 months ago so he probably forgot with his busy schedule. My sister got her hair dyed one shade lighter than her natural color. This was her first time getting her hair dyed so she didn't want anything dramatic. She really liked her color. My youngest sister wanted a natural ombre. I don't think she got ombre since it wasn't a gradation from dark to light. It was just highlights in the back of her head. Maybe her hair will lighten up with time. The haircut was good though. I was really impressed with him ~ He realizes that "Not All Hair is Created Equal", and therefore, needs to be cut accordingly. My hair is thick and looks awful when it gets too bulky. He manages to use professional shampoo to make your hair super naturally soft and he cut my hair short with excellent detailing skill. I manage to talk to him and he has over 30+ years in cutting hair and he always travel to learn about his work. I never have a stylist before, I just found mine. Great haircut and color! Sebastian is the best! I got my hair destroyed by Creations in Anaheim (aka the highlight factory) and Sebastian was kind enough to take on my jacked up hair. $90 included complete re-dye, highlights, and haircut. Pretty awesome considering I let Creations butcher my hair for $60 and South OC salons charge double that for my super long hair. He really cared about my hair and taught me to treat it right. Color and heat is not that harmful to hair if you are in the hands of a master hair stylist like Sebastian. I was super happy with the color and cut and will be returning!! I hate having to post this review, but I want to spare others what I just went through. The first time I went to see Sebastian my hair cut was aaahhmazzzing. Each time Ive been in to see him it gets a little worse, but today can only be described as the quickest hack job ever. I called to set an appointment to get bangs cut in to my long layered hair. I brought pictures. I tried to show him exactly what I wanted, but noticed he didn't even glance up when I showed him the pics. I sat down, he made two cuts and pulled out the blow dryer and asked me if I was happy....umm...not even kind of what I wanted. So he cut more and proceeded to tell me how he liked it better the other way. It still wasn't what I wanted but I figured at this point, he was going to do it his way regardless of what I said. I've been trying to grow my hair out for sooo long, so every precious inch counts, and I want it to be as healthy looking as possible. I asked if he had time to TRIM the rest of my hair and he did so begrudgingly, all the while telling me how bad the ends were (He must have forgotten I was just in to see him for a trim a few weeks ago). Rather than trim, he chopped. Long story short I was in and out the door in 12 minutes, including wait time. Now my bangs are too long and my mid-back length hair is just barely below my shoulders (you know that weird in-between length everyone dreads? Ya, I just paid for that). I haven't yelped in a while, but I just HAD to go on here to tell you about this guy! So usually I go to one of those Asian hair stylist because you know, it's really cheap. But this time around, I wanted a change and my friends recommended me to Sebastian. I came in with pretty high expectations, and he definitely exceeded them! Sebastian was very nice and gave me the inside scoops about how to maintain hair and what products to use. He told me he had 27 years of experience, and you can definitely see the results of it! The only problem I had, was the drive because it was around a 30 minute drive. He asked me in the shop where I was coming from, and when I said Garden Grove, he was shocked that I had to drive so far and he told me that next time, if I need a hair cut, he'll come down to Garden Grove because he has connections to many hair salons closer to where I live. So next time I won't have to drive as far! Sebastian was an awesome stylist, and next time, I will no longer turn to the hair stylists on Bolsa. Although the hair cuts costs around $15 there, I see now, that they have kind of a stencil hair cut, and the cut won't last as long. After my hair cut with Sebastian, my hair looks so much healthier and it fits my personality and face so well. It is such a quality cut. I completely trust him with my hair! If you're looking for a stylist that personally cares for you, and gives you professionally cut hair, he is the person for you! He just did his own thing. Told him to freshen up my layers, keep it on the long side, trim the split ends and cut in a V shape. But nooooo! Not what I got. He just took a chunk of hair and chopped it off. Just about 6 inches, and it got shorter and shorter by the minute. I was about to cry. Hair is short and I will never go back. My stylist moved to San Diego and I'm so picky about new stylists that I considered driving all the way there. But before I drove all that way, I decided to try someone local. My hair is short, and I'm a guy. It couldn't be too complicated right? well.... Sebastian works inside a busy salon tucked away in a Twin Peaks Plaza between BevMo and Crunch Fitness. Had he not told me this when I called the day of the appointment, I don't think I would have ever found it. The salon name is not mentioned and I think most of the stylists there are independent. After I arrived, Sebastian and the receptionist gave me a warm welcome, he washed my hair, and made friendly small chat. As mentioned in previous reviews, Sebastian believes in a a "quality CUT," and he explained this "philosophy" to me at the beginning. Well, I think he's right, but the cut I received was far from quality. I showed him several pictures of what I was looking for, as well as explaining to him some tips I had received from my stylist on how she cuts it. Although my hair was grown out a bit, it actually WAS a longer version of the what I wanted. Sebastian managed to not only completely ignore my request, he gave me a cut that left my very healthy and thick, dark, wavy hair looking like I had thinning spots! I don't think I've ever had a cut that was so impossible to do ANYTHING with. I couldn't style it up, and I couldn't get it to lay down. And no matter what I did, the "bald spots" could not be suppressed. I recently broke down and made the trip to San Diego. My stylist was appalled at what Sebastian had done. With only one $ and five stars, I decided to take a leap of faith on Sebastian. I came in for a trim and color. I wanted some blended highlights to add contrast. After a blow dry, I couldn't tell a difference in color. I went out to my car to check in the light, and saw a barely there change in color. Sebastian told me that his customers are priority, and that he offers adjustments within one month at no additional cost. As I was leaving the parking lot, I knew I had to return because I did not receive what I asked for. My hair looked good, but it wasn't correct. At home, I needed to take a mirror outside in direct sunlight in order to see the new color. I went back for a correction, and Sebastian gave me a lighter tone (which I liked better). I don't think I would return though. I really want to give THREE STARS, not four, but I hate being the one to change his 5 star rating to begin with. Here is my honest list... The Good: Cost Sebastian knows his products and has a good cutting technique. "Fix it within a month" option. The Bad: He is really rough. Like banging my head on the wash basin and pulling it rough. He is not gentle at all, and both times I went in I was in pain in the basin. He also yanks on hair while brushing it out. I heard and felt my hair being pulled from my scalp. I've never left a salon with such an experience before. During the second appointment, Sebastian had me completed in half an hour. I could tell from his pace and quiet demeanor that he just wanted to finish and move on to the next client. During the first appointment, he was friendly and social. I called this morning at 9am, and was able to schedule an appointment with Sebastian for 12:30pm. I only waited about 10 minutes until I was attended upon. I've visited Sebastian twice to get my hair done. Here is a description of both times. The first time I went (July 2013), I wanted a big change - to cut almost 6 inches off my hair. I told him I didn't want layers, but he gave me layers anyway. He insisted they would make my hair weigh less - I liked the overall outcome so I decided to trust him, and went again. I made an appointment with Sebastian for my sister and I this week - this is how it went. 2:35 We arrive, about 5 minutes late for our appointment. 2:50 My sister in law gets seen by Sebastian. She asks for a quick trim and a blow dry, and emphasizes she wants no layers. Sebastian insists on layers, and instead of blow drying her hair - straight irons it! 3:15 Sebastian is done with my sister, and although I'm waiting in the seating area - he takes another client. When I point this out, he takes me to the back of the salon to wash my hair. 3:20 He says "If you don't mind, just sit under the dryer until I finish with this client and then I'll do your hair." I'm a little annoyed, but am fine with waiting a little. 3:35 Sebastian finishes with this other client. He comes up to me and says, "I really don't want to rush on your hair style - so if you don't mind I'm going to take these two clients before you. They're both guys so it will be quick" I respond, "No, I made an appointment and think that's unfair." 3:36 Sebastian walks away, ignoring me, and takes his next client. 3:37 I leave the salon. Throughout the experience, Sebastian was rude and brusque with us. He does not seem to care about what his clients want for their hair, and instead seems bent on giving everyone the style he envisions.
