My first visit here could not have been better. The portions were amazingly large and when they say spicy, they mean spicy! Each dish is prepared with a heat level of 1-5. I enjoy spicy food, but the server recommended I start out at a 2 or 3. I went for the Drunken Noodles at a level 4. As it turns out, I could have taken a level 5, but just barely. My friend had the Pad Thai at level 3 and felt it was just right for him. Mere mortals, be warned. This stuff has flavor and heat! I washed it down with a tall and delicious Thai Iced Coffee. I lived in Thailand for two years. This is authentic Thai and delicious. It's worth the drive to Chalmette but luckily I live here. And have been really happy to see how well they've thrived in St. Bernard. I personally don't get added spice. I lived in Thailand and have eaten "Thai spice" levels but if you go over one or two, it's obscenely hot. Normal spice level is adequate and very similar to what you'd get in Thailand. It's also family run, which is really nice to walk into. And just like a restaurant in Thailand, you're provided with a fork and spoon to eat. I always get Khao Soi (Chiang Mai curry). You rarely find a Thai restaurant in the States the serves that and it's delicious every time. The Thom Yam (lemongrass soup) is delicious and I love that it's served in the proper tureen. Som Tam (papaya salad) also on point. It's a bummer when they run out of sticky rice but that happens when you're popular. And they serve family style or Thai style--that's how you'd eat going out with your family in Thailand. Highly suggest ordering several dishes to share with the table than your own entree. I'd like to keep this place a secret, but I can't. It's that good. Just be careful with the spice levels as they go from none to extreme. .5 is good for most, 1.0 if you like the spice. They go to 5.0! The other secret, the portions are huge. An order of Drunken Noodles is enough to have 2 more meals at home. Oh man! If you are looking for flavor-- if you enjoy spice-- Secret Thai Restaurant is the SPOT! I got the crab and cream cheese rangoons. Usually, the rangoons at other restaurants are all cream and really heavy, but the rangoons here are so flavorful, and I couldn't stop eating them. The homemade dipping sauce is the best I've ever had and creates a good acidic balance to the creamy appetizer. The most impressive thing about these rangoons is that they use Real crab meat. Such a game changer! I also got the Gulf of Siam, which was a deliciously spicy blend of seafood: mussels, fish, snow crab, calamari, and scallops. They spice burned so good and was a great compliment to the Rangoons' creaminess, too. I love the seafood offerings of New Orleans, but this feast really gave my taste buds a new experience. To top it all off, I got a Thai iced tea, which was sweet and refreshing. Secret Thai Restaurant offers a fantastic new flavor profile for anyone looking for something different and exciting. "So much food!!" That's the first thing I thought when I opened my to go boxes. My friends and I ordered the drunken noodle and pad Thai. My friends ordered level 0 spice. I ordered level 1 on a drunken noodle. Suuchhh a mistake (IMO)! I'm not one to shy away from spice but I heard their dishes were spicy so I wanted to test the waters. When I say every bite I took had a Thai pepper piece or seed in it and I was crying!! It was a bittersweet moment. I loved it. My endorphins were flowing from the spice but I could only take a bit at the time. Their food is flavorful! It had plenty of veg and protein. I would def come again, but maybe go for a level 0 or ask for the peppers on the side. If you are brave, I suggest you try level 1 and see where your tolerance takes you. This is the best Thai food we have found outside of the Los Angeles Thai community. And that's because the owners are from L.A. and their family runs a Thai restaurant there. The caveats are: 1 - You will probably have to wait a while for your food, but it's worth it! We try to come early when they have just opened for lunch or are just starting to serve dinner around 5:00. Otherwise, the wait can get very loooong. 2 - Regarding the hotness level, we are pretty tolerant of spicy food, but in some dishes the 2 was too hot for us. Stick to level 1 and you can always add more from the condiments on the table. The tom khar soup (we get it with chicken) is excellent. We did not care for the yellow curry sauce on one of the noodle dishes, and we are still experimenting to find our favorites. My partner and I really like this place but the spice level is no joke, I mean it. I can tolerate the spiciest of foods but I was no match to their spice levels. First trip I got a spice level five (they're 0-5 system) and I couldn't finish my dish. The next trip I got a spice level 2 and I swear it was spicier. Again couldn't finish my dish and my stomach hurt for a whole day afterwards. BUT! The food is fresh (they make it right there from fresh ingredients), is a small owned business, and the flavor is insane. My partner got a spice level 1 and zero and I ended up sharing his food.
