Something has changed..... it's like the glow/shine is out of this restaurant. The atmosphere best can be described as dingy. We had to put chopsticks under our table to keep it in balance. Watch out! Been getting take out for over 12 years here. Now they are adding gratuity for take out food. When I asked The hostess she told me it was for answering the phone, taking order and packing the bags. She seems surprised that I would question this. In this time of Covid we tip our servers very generously for service. I would not think that someone that answers the phone and put our food in a take-out bag does the same amount of work as a table server. The food here has always been expensive but good. Now it has gotten 10% more expensive because of this gratuity. Next time I may ask them if I can pack the bag myself. read more

I have a few sushi snob friends who refuse to eat sushi in Memphis. I agree it can be scary but not at SPR! This is my favorite Sekisui location and not just because it is conveniently located down the street from my house. The decor, in my humble opinion, is the best of the Sekisuis. Then again, I'm a sucker for neon lights, cool lighting and fish tanks. I'll admit the service can be a bit slow but I consider it extra time with my friends. We've been known to frequent this place on girls nights. And the drinks are reasonably priced as are the rolls. They're tasty too! read more

I have gotten to the point of nearly acknowledging there is no such thing as great sushi in Memphis. It's a sad realization. And I hope that changes. Pacific Rim may be the best we have in Memphis, but it does not deserve more than 3 stars for its sushi. Sushi is a delicacy. It requires experience and skill to prepare it properly. Sushi is not fried fish wrapped in rice and topped with a mixture of mayonaise and Sriracha (yes, that's what spicy mayo is). Good sushi is raw, and creative, and fresh. I love good sushi. I decided tonight to get what in my opinion were two creative rolls on the menu, the Alli and the Fiesta. Both contained a variety of raw fish (note: the Fiesta is topped with seared albacore). Both had some light sauces. One was sweet, one was spicy. I thought these would make a nice meal. They were both OK. Nothing "WOW" about them, but much better than other Memphis shops. The Alli was supposed to be a mix of spicy crawfish and tuna (note: I did not taste any tuna in this one), avocado, crunches, Thai sauce and shrimp. There was a jalapeno on top of each. I was a bit disappointed in the potency of the sauce, it really overpowered anything else on the roll. I will not get this one again. I don't think there were crunches in the roll either. I didn't look, but I didn't taste them. On a 1-5 scale, it was a 2.5-3.0. The Fiesta seemed interesting. Tuna and avocado, with cilantro, topped with seared Albacore and a sweet chili sauce. I was hoping the sauce and the cilantro would make this roll a hit. It was not. The sauce was not very good. I ended up scraping it off the last half of the roll. The tuna did not have any real flavor to it. Makes me fear it was not fresh. I did not taste any cilantro. On a 1-5 scale, it was a 2.0. Sure, the decor is interesting, and the location is really nice for those of us in East Memphis. But the service is bad. Water glasses sit empty for too long. And to be honest, the place is in need of a facelift. It's looked the same for at least 8 years. It's jut getting a bit rough around the edges. Dirty bathrooms, grungy furniture in places, a tired look overall. Took a really long time to get 4 rolls, as well. It's OK, I guess. Now that I've written this review, I almost want to give it 2 stars, instead of 3. If Yelp had 1/2 stars, this would be a 2.5 star spot. read more

the ambiance is great. SPR is really a go to place when i need a drink with some friends and simple sushi. I've had alot of their foods and really am not impressed. Coming from someone thats worked as a sushi chef and have had previous restaurant backround, i feel like they've had potential. The menu and food that they list are good but its just the way they make it which is not fond to me. Take for instance the yaki udon i had ordered. The female employee that seated us at Pacific Rim was very friendly and we had no problem getting a nice table. The waitress was super friendly and attentive. A second female server also waited on us and she was also very friendly and attentive. The soup and salad were good as usual and the house cucumber was the bomb!!! Our usual rolls were pretty good but the seaweed wrap was tough and chewy. I think he over lapped the seaweed and made it too thick or something. This is my favorite place for Sushi in Memphis. Osaka gave it a good go, but Sekisui Pacific Rim is the best of the best. Their prices MAY be a bit higher than other places, but I think it's totally worth it. the Earl's Roll and 40 Kel are my favorites. There is another one I cannot remember the name of with little jalepeno slices on the top, YUM! We like to get one (or two) bottles of Nigori to drink while we wait and eat, and they also have Peach jelly sake which is a dream some true and a must try. Each Sekisui restaurant in Memphis is slightly different in decor and menu items, though all are owned by Jimmy Ishii. The Germantown one is more Americanized and hyper-clean; Pacific Rim is blue-neon-lit funky with the most expensive menu; the Midtown location is funkier and not terribly clean; and the downtown location looks exactly like the Holiday Inn it resides within, tourist-y and overpriced with the least ambitious menu. Pacific Rim is fine, though its location in a small strip mall on Poplar in East Memphis has always made me wonder at its decor. Who's supposed to be eating in this bar-like setting? Young coworkers from nearby Clark Tower? All the (nonexistent) hip kids who hang out around Target? People who give up halfway when driving downtown from out east? That remains a mystery, but the food is fine, standard sushi fare that draws a crowd at lunch and dinner. Just one thing drives me insane about all Sekisuis: there are TVs everywhere. From each seat, you can watch television with the sound on, which (if you, like me, fail to be a sparkling conversationalist) your tablemates will watch with a half-open mouth. This was my second time at SPR. The first time was many years ago and I barely remember what I ordered the first time I came here. Parking was a bit of a hassle too. I arrived around 8PM and circled the building a few times before I parked next to some terribly parked truck. Good thing my car was tiny. Ambience in the place seemed pretty cool. There was nothing spectacular and I honestly felt the tables were oddly placed. There's a table right next to the entrance all in it's lonesome. Seemed a bit strange to me. The waiting area has what is pretty much a metal bench with pillows on it, similar to what you'd expect in a go-kart. I wanted to sit at the bar but it was full so the hostess told me once it was available I could take it. Once I noticed it was available I stood up and moved on over where there were still the previous couple's ticket and food. No problem there. About 5 minutes later a male greeted us and spoke to one of the waitresses or hostess that we had been sitting there and nobody had picked up the items. Eventually, a girl came and grabbed the ticket and a few cups in front of us but did not say a word to us. Polite much? Eventually, what appeared to be their busman came to clear out our table. Another girl walked by and smiled at us (Yay!) and then eventually the guy who greeted us became our waiter. We got two waters but no straws to go with them. Okay...? No worries! They were behind us next to the waterfall so we just grabbed them ourselves. Pretty much once we finally got our waiter and straws everything else seemed to go smooth. Onwards to the menu! I ordered the 7 piece Nigiri sampler, the philly roll, the 8 samurai, and the "Da Johnny" rolls to share between two people. We enjoyed our sushi and received a good variety of nigiri. The 8 Samurai was probably my favorite, followed by Da Johnny. The 8 Samurai had a very interesting contrast in flavors and nothing really overpowered the other. It had a very nice bite to it and the roll did not fall apart on us while we were eating it. The Philly roll, well... it's a philly roll. Prices were pretty fair and we ended up getting just the right amount of food for two people. BUT I'm not a big fan of the pencil-in-your-order sushi menus, especially when I get the impression that it's a high end Japanese restaurant. Since it was practically my first time here, I didn't know what to order either. I wish there were visuals to accompany the rather interesting variety of maki. I'm also a huge salmon lover and I found their menu was extremely biased towards Tuna and Crawfish. The only raw salmon roll (only*) they had came with chili sauce and I ain't all about salmon and chili. I honestly wish there were more raw maki choices... they have 39 cooked rolls! I was also surprised at all the rolls with crawfish in them. I suppose they're that good if they have so many rolls with it. Definitely a southern thing but I find it is a bit funny for a restaurant that says it has authentic Japanese cuisine. I mean, tortilla chips on the menu? Teriyaki burger? Spicy Lao Larb? Okay... Don't get me wrong, the sushi here was great, the prices are fair, but the menu just didn't capture me. Maybe I will come back and try some of the unique menu options and will be forced to edit my review and rating. But there are a few authentic Japanese restaurants where I live and so I came here with expectations of such. Instead, I think I just left another run-of-the-mill Japanese fusion restaurant. Honestly, the Sekisui Sushi experience has really gone down. My wife and I went to the Sekisui in Colliervile TN and it was a complete waste of $80.00. The sushi rolls were not prepared roll and they all tasted the same. You couldn't really differentiate the rolls in taste. The waitress was not knowledgable of sushi and couldn't answer my questions. The other Sekisui Pacific Rim location on Poplar is terrible as well. Upon arriving at the restaurant with a group of women employees standing outside of the restaurant taking a smoke break made rude inappropriate comments. The service at Sekisui Pacific Rim is lacking especially if you go late at night with a large party of people. They should have not stopped having a DJ on Friday nights. Honeslty, if you are in Memphis and want a really nice sushi experience visit "DO Sushi" in midtown. Otherwise, Sekisui chalks up to a waste of time and money. read more

I think their sushi rolls are a little better than the rolls at other places in memphis. it's just a really good distribution of fish/rice/veggie etc that's in the roll. Though I agree with some reviewers that the decor appears a little bit dated, I have never had a problem with the food, and I have some serious favorites here. What has happened to Pacific Rim in Memphis? Likely our first mistake was NOT sitting at the sushi bar where we have ALWAYS had a positive experience. Tonight we elected to sit at one of the two top tables. After turning it sideways so we didn't have to shout at each other down the length of the table, we were up for a night of good food. Our server was barely friendly.....in an obligatory kind of way. In fact, we commented on the energy in the entire place. Everyone seemed sour, even the customers. My duck breast special was overcooked. The mashed potatoes served with it were disgusting. They were loaded with sugar and they were not orange potatoes but white ones. Four small flowerettes of broccoli adorned the plate along with some fried sweet potatoe strips. The Sashimi Seafood Salad had a shrimp, a piece of octopus, a fake crab stick and a really really thinly sliced and slightly frozen piece of yellowtail. This was all sitting on top of some seaweed with cucumbers underneath. The perceived value was not there. The Pyramid, which has always been our favorite, has lost is wow factor. The presentation was sadly lacking and they now serve it with too much rice and too little fish. What used to be our go to for Japanese fare in Memphis when we are in town has missed it's mark unfortunately. We left feeling sorry for the one friendly person in the entire place--the cute brunette Hostess. She was the only bright spot other than we enjoyed being with ourselves even if the food was sub-par. We will likely try to new Sekisui that is relocating from Humphries Center to Regalia on our next trip to town. Sorry Pacific Rim. Sorry. read more

I agree with the other reviewers here, that this particular Seksui is a bit different than the others around town. I, for one, actually like the slightly hip decor and overall feel of the restaurant. The food is good, especially the sushi. It's always fresh and the presentation is nice. What I don't care that much for is the service. I went with my friend the other night for her birthday, and it took forever to place our order, and my wine glass sat empty for 10 minutes before I could get the attention of the waitress to order another. And they weren't particularly busy. I've been other times when the service was better. It's just a little hit or miss, so be prepared for that if you decide to go. read more

Sekisui Pacific Rim was chic and cutting-edge when it opened about a decade ago but now when I go there I feel like I should expect the "Night at the Roxbury" guys to come bobbing past me. Does anyone actually enjoy listening to trance/club/whatever that music is while they're trying to eat dinner? Liquor options are limited by the lack of an actual bar, so it's best to stick to wine or sake. There are a lot of creative rolls on the menu, but the sushi is usually just all right, never mind-blowingly good. Two specialty rolls, a seaweed salad and one cocktail ran me (just me) $32. I know Memphis is landlocked so the fish will cost more. But I can spend the same amount on a meal I'll rave about for days at any fine-dining restaurant in town. read more
