I judge every Italian place by its bruschetta (on the menu but not ordered) and its pesto, and Tenuta's passed my personal test with flying colors. The most pleasing things about the dish were the very generous amounts of tasty sauce on the pasta, chicken, and zucchini. The least pleasing was the pale orange of the very underripe cherry tomatoes included. Companions had the nightly special (gnocci with bacon and a gorgonzola sauce) and the Calabrese, a tantalizingly spicy dish. Everything was perfect. Desserts ordered were the tiramisu (a large portion) and butterscotch boudino, a dreamy cup of butterscotch pudding, homemade butterscotch sauce, whipped cream, and a bit of sea salt. The one that almost made my mind collapse was the trout. I normally don't bother with trout as it's usually kinda lackluster. The trout Vanessa made for us at Mother's was hands down one of the best pieces of fish I've ever eaten... and I ate my way up the California coast for 30 years. Get in now while it's still possible to get a table. This is as good as it gets. We got the honor of being food nerds when Chef came to the table and talked sauce with us! While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful.
