Came here with some coworkers for a birthday and going away dinner. We had a party of seven people. And let me tell you, this place isn't a very large, but they accommodated our large party and immediately welcomed us in. And as we sat down they didn't waste any time to get our drink and meal orders in. Our server was so efficient with making sure we had all we needed and kept our water cups filled up. She even came by to chat it up with us about whose birthday it was and brought ice cream for the entire party :) The food was pretty good and had good portion sizes (our party ordered a mixture of bento boxes and sushi rolls). A place I would come back to again! But one thing to note is that they are only open on weekdays. Sendo is the epitome of what makes a perfect local hole in the wall (hence the 5 starts). When I first moved to the area, after seeing how busy it was at lunch, I picked up some takeout one night in hopes of finding my go to sushi spot. Sendo didn't disappoint. Now I come here every Friday night with my friend for sushi and sake. It's our weekly ritual, we sit outside with our dogs and sample different items while catching up over the week. Their Udon is excellent. I have liked every sushi roll I have tried, and their sashimi/nigiri is always fresh and generously cut I've also done their bento boxes a few times when I couldn't decide what I wanted. But as great as the food is, what truly makes this my perfect local haunt is the staff! Sunny the owner and Joy our usual Friday night server really care about the regulars. When I stop in everyone knows us from the sous chef to Sunny's family and they have a smile, and are happy to see us (the Japanese Restaurant version of Cheers). In fact when I recently had knee surgery and couldn't make it in for several weeks, not only did they ask after me; but they delivered takeout to me! Salad dressing was not too sweet, but good. Just the way I like it. I don't like sweet dressing. The salmon was crisp on the edges just the way I like it too. I got the sauce on the side as I usually do so its not soggy though. Try it that way. haha. The tempura came with like 6 pieces, definitely NOT shady. The sushi rolls were huge! We ordered the Swiss Roll and the Sake Tempura roll. Both yummers and filled up our tummies to food coma. Next time we only would need to order one roll and share a bento. Kind of pricey though..over $10 each roll. But the size accounts for the price. They were good and fresh! Fresh is always good in my sushi book because I like raw fish. I am not Japanese and I am an amateur when it comes to eating Japanese food. With that said, I like this place. I only ever order a few things when I dine at Japanese restaurants because I'm not a sushi person and I am not too adventurous. Teriyaki Chicken: flavorful and juicy Tempura Shrimp: Long, large, and plump. Crispy and bountiful. Miso Soup: Hot, comforting, very flavorful, not too much tofu (just how I like it). Wow! Wonderful customer service and delicious food. My fiance and I came here for date night on a Friday night. Within a minute after sitting down, the waitress came to our table to serve us. She was so friendly and helpful. We ordered the zesty garlic edamame, two beers, the zesty salmon roll and the dynamite roll. All three were amazing! I highly recommend the zesty garlic edamame and the zesty salmon roll. They were explosively delicious. And to top it all off we got a scoop of mango ice cream at the end of the meal. My coworkers and I took our 2nd trip to Sendo Sushi for lunch, and I have to say, Sendo Sushi has the BEST sushi centered in Silicon Valley. We ordered 10 rolls and a sashimi sampler. The rolls were rolled to perfection with perfectly cooked rice, fresh fish, and delicious sauce. The texture and cut of the fish is something I'd expect to pay a lot more for, but the price at Sendo provides good value for the quality. Kudos to the chef. The location is open M-F, and is closed during the weekend--since silicon valley has the weekend off, there isn't a customer base to be open on the weekend. Although I wish I could go there on the weekend to satisfy my sushi cravings. Sendo Sushi is so good. TIP: If you plan to go with a group for lunch, call in to reserve ahead of time. Sendo is an adequate, decent sushi place. However, it seems to be geared primarily for non-Japanese people, so I can't rate it highly. It's a good place to go if you want rolls, but sushi and sashimi are not things I would buy here. The rice in the sushi is just plain "Uncle Ben" style rice and the fish from the sushi isn't totally fresh. It's not that it went bad, but it is a little dry and it's obvious it was frozen then thawed and left to sit out a little to dry. Overall, it's within walking distance from where I'm visiting right now, so it's a good place to get lunch. Just don't expect to be wowed by their food. read more

Came here for a working lunch a while ago at our guests preference of Japanese food. I noticed that a lot of people come here for lunch, so the food must be good right? The place is small just as most other places around here are, and the seating is quite tight. Pretty much ordered lunch specials all around which is a common sight here. The portions are generous here, but that isn't always a good thing especially when you don't eat everything in the box. We ended up conversing more than eating... which was probably good in this case. Their are many mediocre Japanese restaurants in San Jose, and there are few excellent ones. This one is mediocre at best. When I describe it as mediocre, I mean normal tasting... just edible. I haven't been back here to eat, and usually don't prefer Japanese food for lunch unless I want to sit down and stuff myself. So much disappointment. I used to work near japan town and Kubota was my go-to for a delicious lunch bento. Now that I work on North 1st I have been trying to find a decent place for a bento and still no luck. I had the beef and tempura. I also ordered scallop nigiri. Scallop nigiri was excellent. Fresh, gigantic scallops with a little tobiko on top. Yum. Bento fell flat. They asked me how I wanted the beef cooked and I always do medium rare. It was well done. The tempura was mostly batter. Like it had to be double coated or something. Blehhh. The salad was good cause they use romaine instead of iceberg lettuce, but you don't order a bento for the dang salad. Hard not to like this place. It is cozy and cute. Clearly a family run business with great service and the kind of place you would want to be a regular at...except that the sushi is only good not great. The fish was just a little too cold and they used too much rice. Rice itself was of a lower quality. But they are really really nice and the fish quality was fine. I really appreciated that they gave all the kids (including my son) a free box of Pepero. That was really sweet. We would be back, but only because it is close and convenient. First off: Food is great! No complaints there. The Udon was well priced with good portions. However, the service is HORRIBLE. I came in during a weekday dinner hour, and was ignored by the lady server for well over 5 minutes. There were less than 6 people during this time. Took another 15 minutes to get the udon, and once I was done, it took another 10 minutes of waving down the owner to get a bill. Desperate for a sushi fix and in the need for something fast, I came here for a quick bite during work. I ordered a dragon roll, an avacado and unagi roll and the garden salad to go. Garden salad - generic iceberg lettuce with a delicious but heavy tasting sesame dressing. I love ginger dressing and was a little disappointed to not get that but the sesame dressing was good. It tasted mayo based, however, which was a disappointment. Dragon roll - delicious and huge. Definitely a keeper, although I am very fond of them. Avacado / unagi roll - Didn't realize I'd essentially ordered the same thing since I got this last minute. It was pretty decent but heavy. Everything was liberally soaked with the unagi sauce and cucumber was put into my dragon roll. I dislike cucumber in sushi so I should have gotten this removed. I would have liked it more if the sauce hadn't been soaking my sushi. Firecracker roll - spicy salmon deep fried with "sauces." Too much sauce but I liked how warm it was. Shrimp tempura roll - average. Too complicated - I'm used to just shrimp tempura with spicy mayo and roe. And I like it that way. Chirashi - a great way to try all sorts of sashimi. Not so sure I liked all that was included but it was interesting to try everything. Other observations: Since I got it to go, I cannot remark on the service. Chef was fairly friendly, waitresses seemed really freaked out. It was busy and the tiny shopping had little parking, which was a pain. They also cut their sushi too big so they're not bite sized. This place is very close to work and one of my coworker likes it here so I come for the company, not necessarily for the food. The service here is very nice, they are quick to seat, take order and deliver the food. I want to note that this not Japanese owned (not that it matters to me, but some purist only go to Japanese owned Japanese restaurants). If you like lots of creative roll choices, this is a place for you. I am not fond of them. I ate the following (not in the same day): Ten Zaru Soba - cold soba noodles with Tempura - decent portions and taste, but I don't think you can mess up cold nooldes or fried foods. S-2 - Salmon Teriyaki and Potstickers. - the salmon was great, but I should have asked to leave off the teriyaki sauce ( I am not a fan of any sort of sweet sauce). The potstickers were a bit too crispy for my liking. M-1 - Saba Shioyaki and California Rolls - the saba was fantastic, perfectly grilled and nice and oily. The salad was good. The miso soup was not that great, only had tiny tiny bits of tofu which had an old taste to it. There should have been seaweed. The worst Calif roll I ever had. It just didn't have any taste, the fake crab was really stringy and the whole thing fell apart after taking a bite (since I could not fit the entire thing in my mouth) I will still come here cause the service is great and a quick place to grab lunch. read more

Bento box is well priced- $12.99 for 3 item. The office usually orders from here for a quick pick up. They pack all your food including miso soup & salad. Other Japanese restaurants won't pack your soup to go so i like how we get soup at this place. I don't think the sashimi is the freshest here yet i still always get it. The tempura is good and Katsu is crispy. The beef teriyaki is my favorite- its made with rib eye steak so it's very tender. If you want more bang for your buck- come here! read more

This is a little Japanese place in a little strip mall of places that primarily subsist on selling lunch to the surrounding tech crowds. Sendo is a perfectly acceptable lunch place with above-average-for-a-strip-mall-in-tech-land food. It's definitely not gourmet Japanese, but neither is it wholly teriyaki glop. Sendo offers a slightly more customizable selection of bento boxes than Tasman Teriyaki down the road, so they get points for that. For example, you can get pork katsu with potstickers or California rolls, or *both* potstickers and California rolls for a little extra. Tasman only offers a choice between the two. I do wish their gyoza were available pan-fried instead of deep-fried. FWIW, they're beef, not pork. One caveat is Sendo isn't really set up well for takeout food, and the inside is tiny, cramped and kind of dark. We went at rush time (12:15) once and ordered bento to go, but were shuffled outside to wait by ourselves because the place was too busy inside. Tasman at least has a little bench inside. So, I'd recommend this place if you're in the area and need lunch; but don't necessarily make a special trip. read more

3.0 Stars I stopped into Sendo Sushi today for an early lunch. There aren't a lot of parking spaces so it's a good thing I came early in around 11:45. The restaurant was probably about 40% full already and it was funny how they wanted to seat me and my colleague at a table of four that already had two people sitting at it. No offense to those already sitting down, but we wanted our privacy! This placed had a pretty vast lunch menu ranging from udon to donburi to bento boxes to sushi. I decided to play it safe and order a bento box. Their two item bentos were $9.50 and the three item bentos went for $11.50. All bentos come with soup, salad, and rice. P-4: Pork Katsu, California Roll, and Potstickers The miso soup came first. It was hot and flavorful, but there weren't many condiments inside. I spotted less than five pieces of tiny tofu cubes. The salad wasn't anything extraordinary either. The pork katsu had a good batter that made the bites nice and crispy. The pork was a little more on the tougher end but it wasn't terrible. I really liked the gyoza here. Your bento box comes with four of these crunchy treats. I was surprised how good the California Rolls were here too. There were also four pieces and the pieces were fairly large. Best of all, the crab tasted very fresh. Although it wasn't the best bento box I ever ate, it was still pretty decent for the price. This place gets crowded during lunchtime, even with the mall and other food options in the area. Parking is difficult, so get here early if you want Japanese that day. Bento boxes are the way to go if you aren't picky with your choice of Japanese entrees. The staff is friendly and welcoming, where this place is not ridiculously priced. Against my better judgment, went here with some coworkers for lunch. The first thing that caught my attention when I sat down and looked at the menu was "holy crap! why is it so expensive?" salmon nigiri for $4? I ended up going with the Saba Shioyaki/Tenpura bentou set and it was pretty disappointing. First off, it's supposed to be a boneless saba fillet. A bone or two is acceptable, but not an entire skeleton! The tenpura batter was kind of funky too. It was crispy, but it was an odd color. The color was almost like it was fried in old oil, but it didn't taste like old oil. I guess it looked something like a beer batter. The rest of the meal was equally forgettable. I guess there isn't much else around to eat in that area, so for lunch, you don't have much choice. If you do go at lunchtime, don't even bother trying to park in the lot out front. That parking lot has so few spots and is a circus, so save yourself some time and aggravation and park on the street or an adjacent lot. Better yet, just keep going on First St until you get to 237, then go east into Milpitas and go to Sushi Maru. read more

Fans of Japanese cuisine seem to fall into two cohorts, one with a fondness for increasingly outlandish rolls with flashy names and the other wish a fondness for the type of food you might have in Japan. This place, run by non-Japanese of some sort, caters to the fan of the over the top sushi roll but, unlike many Japanese places run by non-Japanese, will not leave the purist overly disappointed. The bento I had, a combination with sashimi (3 small, lonely pieces of maguro), saba (grilled mackerel, a rather tasty but somewhat oily fish) and california rolls (6, a reasonable portion), was tasty, but not overly so, and somewhat spendy, but not overly so. Want some non-Japanese Japanese food on the high side of average in terms of both price and quality for genre? Great choice. Hardcore purist or tightwad? Go elsewhere. read more

This place ia a good choice if you work in the area, have a sushi craving, and don't mind bad / odd service. I came with a friend and ordered a bento box lunch with Teriyaki Salmon, California Roll, and Tempura. The restaurant was kind of dark and upleasant and busy inside, so we sat outside. It was a beautiful day, so that was nice. The waitress was very pleasant and took our orders promptly. The food came out relatively quick, but the guy that delivered it just came outside and was staring at the 3 tables, not sure where to put it. So he brings my friend her dish first and she takes it and then turns it around so the salad faces her and she takes a bite. 30 seconds later, the waitress comes out, picks up the dish, turns it around the other way, and then places it back on the table, like she is delivering the dish in the first place. Very odd! Anyway, I got my food shortly after... The food was delicious. I love the salad and the salad dresssing. The salmon was perfect. The california roll tasted great. The tempura was cooked just right and had a great selection of every kind of veggie you could possibly want, plus a giant prawn. All of this was about $10. I would definitely go back again, especially on a nice day, when I can sit outside and not in the restaurant. I don't mind coming here for lunch, but just make sure you get here before the lunch-time rush. If you have two people, then also be prepared you may end up sitting next to another couple as there is limited seating. Although it's common in Europe, it's not so common in America. The sushi is par--nothing spectacular, yet it is on-point. Of the dishes I've had, I do enjoy the Climax Roll, hiyayakku (i.e hiya tofu (i.e. cold tofu)), and Fire Cracker roll. There's something newly intriguing to me about three types of fish rolled up maki style and then deep-fried. If you're in a rush, then call ahead and have take out. The only problem I've ever had is trying to find parking in their incredibly tiny parking lot. Went out to lunch here with some coworkers; we ordered one sushi roll to split and we each got our own Bento boxes. The service was attentive and helpful, despite the busy lunch-rush. The restaurant was also perfectly fine with us splitting the check equally among all of our credit cards - which is always appreciated when going out with a group of people. I want to mention that if I come back here I will only ever be getting the Bento Boxes. Their fish is just not fresh, which leads to a disappointing sushi experience. The roll we split wasn't very good, due to the fish. And the sashimi I chose for one of my Bento box options was horrible - the tuna was not fresh at all and I couldn't finish it. But, the rest of the Bento box was quite good. Their teriyaki chicken was good and a friend seemed to quite enjoy his pork katsu. The salad that came with the Bento was also quite tasty. read more

I love this place! The rolls are big and delicious. I get the philly roll (or super philly roll- a cooked version) and one of their cooked/fried/sauced rolls. The staff are soooo friendly: waitresses and sushi chefs alike. They give you tea complimentary if you're waiting for your roll.
