My favorite coffee shop in Savannah. I've been going here since they opened back in the early 2000s. It's still great. On a nice weather day I get a refill for a buck or less and take it on a stroll in Forsyth Park. Lots of locals and fun people watching. Great vibe, great coffee. read more

I love all types of coffee shops but for some reason this one didn't do it for me. I was spending some time hanging with some friends in Forsyth and when we were going to leave I decided to pop in and work on a couple assignments while getting a cup of coffee. When I walked in there was an odd smell that hit me, it wasn't a garbage or a nasty type of smell it was just not a usual scent. Won't lie the coffee was pretty good and it was very cheap which was sweet. But I just didn't care for the vibe I got when I was in there. It didn't seem like the cleanest place and just didn't settle with me. The vibe also wasn't very pleasing to me but it may be that I'm just used to my personal preference of coffee shops. Service and food review! So I hardly got any sleep last night and naturally needed a heavy dose of caffeine so I stopped here. I was starving because apparently (Sweet Melissa's had new hours so no late night pizza for me booooo). So Sentient Bean was totes my saving grace. I mostly came for the vegetarian options. I got the big daddy which had vegan sausage on it with a "shot in the dark" (shot of espresso and drip coffee). The woman at the counter was very nice and asked if I had ever been in before. I told her no so she let me know where the self service coffee bar was as well as the water station if I wanted to grab a cup or utensils as well. She gave me a trophy table marker and let me know they would bring it to me asap. I chose a table in the popular cafe and got my ophone all set up on theor free wi-fi and looked up some fun things to do in the area while I was visiting for work. Before I knew it my sandwich was delivered to my table. I really should've asked what was in that sausage because it was so good! My fiancé and I are in Savannah a long weekend and visited Sentient Bean mostly because of its close proximity to Forsyth Park. It was way better than we expected! The look and feel is very college-coffee shopesque with minimal frills and lots of tables and places to sit. The coffee was awesome! We both got black coffees and loved tasting the different taste notes. These people definitely know coffee! Also- bonus- we came on a Sunday and they had a farmers market menu! I had a farm-fresh breakfast burrito with squash, zucchini, and eggs. It tasted SUPER fresh and yummy. Highly recommend. read more

Saw this coffee shop, stopped in and it was excellent. Location awesome. So close to Forsyth park.

This was a great spot to get a bite to eat. Staff was nice and food was great. Went two days in a row, actually. AND to top it off, I was finally able to get my hazelnut coffee fix. It seems like the vegan draw is what makes customers come here, and the coffee or tea is an added bonus. I actually wasn't interested in anything vegan, although I told myself I'd come try a baked good. Nope, I was here strictly for the coffee drinks. I once stepped in here on a weekend morning and it was crazy in here! I get it...Forsyth Park's right there and everybody and their mom has the weekend off. That first time I didn't get anything; I guess I was just walking around exploring. This time I came by on a weekday afternoon, and it was much calmer. I prefer the location this way, but what can you do if your work schedule doesn't normally allow it? My drinks: Large shot in the dark (espresso in coffee). A large comes with three shots, but you can request less. Then you pour your coffee at the counter. There were three blends - plus decaf - to choose from. That's perfect if you like a lot of creamer. This way you can decide how much coffee to add in. The second drink was a medium lavender latte. There's a list at the counter of flavor add-ins. I wasn't sure if that applied to lattes (I don't get too much in the science of how coffee drinks are made, except for the difference between coffee shop and Keurig), and it sure did! Both drinks tasted great; each of us was pleased with the selection. I can't say I'll come back here and go out of my way for a drink, but I'd stop in if I'm near by for sure. What a great place! While visiting Savannah for the weekend, my friends and I stayed in a large AirBnB in the Victorian district, just a couple blocks away from the Sentient Bean. It was the perfect spot for a morning hit of caffeine (their coffee is a little bitter for me, but I am by no means a coffee connoisseur), and it was even better for a quick bite. I ate here twice, both times getting the vegan breakfast burrito because it was so I good the first time that I had to have it again before I left town! My friends got a variety of other items, including the breakfast salad, the vegan breakfast tacos, and plenty of scones but sweet and savory. GET A SCONE. The space is large, the service is friendly, and the food is delicious. What more could you ask for in a coffee shop? read more

My friends and I stopped by here for a snack while walking through Forsyth Park. I had the yogurt fruit and granola bowl. Instead of yogurt, I had the vegan almond milk and chia yogurt. I'm a big fan of chia pudding, and I enjoyed that it was blended to give it a more yogurty texture. For the quantity that I got, the price was very reasonable. We ordered a chai latte and hot chocolate. Both were okay but not memorable. Great service. They gave us our drinks in to go cups even though we were sitting there. Despite the very long line from all the people hungry after running, we got our food within 15 minutes. It was really simple but quite tasty (egg, shredded cheddar, black beans, spinach in a wheat wrap, with a side of salsa & sriracha on the plate). My chai (hot) was unfortunately very bland. The service was really poor. I didn't immediately see the menu (it's on the wall), and my inquiry was met with irritability. It was not busy. The food-runner was annoyed when I helped her find two young girls who had kept switching tables. I've worked in food service for years, so I understood her frustration, but I still can't condone her taking it out on me, as if *I* had been the one to tell them to move....? All in all, the poor service and bland chai made it more expensive than it was worth, but I appreciated the overall atmosphere and mission of The Sentient Bean. We went in for a small lunch, had the quinoa/bean soup and it was good. I also had their house salad which was nothing to write about nether was their bread. Overall this would be a very average place, good for 4 stars. Unfortunately their restroom is for one person only. I am sorry but it is old to stand in line be number 3 just so I can wash my hands. I've been coming here for years and for many different reasons. The food is amazing and locally sourced. The kitchen is creative with their meals and fast to serve. The coffee is always delicious and well-sourced. What strengthens my 5 star review is the music, movies, and other events. When I was just a kid in high school it was one of the few places a kid under 18 could enjoy a show. The coffee was good (went with an iced coffee) and they were able to accommodate my request for sparkling water with their own bubbly soda water. The atmosphere felt relaxed, hipster and slightly grungy. If I lived in town I might consider visiting on a frequent basis to plop down with my laptop and a coffee because there is so much space, I wouldn't feel like I was encroaching on valuable real estate. Tremendous selection! High quality product! Quirky Southern atmosphere that lends itself to the Savannah vibe. In a very walkable setting from the park and neighborhoods. Parking can be difficult as it's only on the street. A short distance from the historic district, but well worth the trip to see the real Savannah. Met a friend from college there and enjoyed a leisurely reunion and lots of laughter. Coming in to the Sentient bean with me and my girls after a brunch, mimosas, and trying to walk through a park after brunch and mimosas like, "oh hello, officer!... ope, good dog but normal me wouldn't stop to pet it. Oh who am I kidding, yes she totally would. Pet the dog yo!" was like listening to Jimi Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland" poolside, but instead of guitar notes it's people. Everyone was so cool with funky vibes and groovy get up, it made me think of dressing up as Shaggy from Scooby doo for Halloween (Luckily I already got a dog named Scoobs so that should be relatively easy). Amber WAS the color of my energy in there, and I can't wait to go back again and learn from that man in the corner who was in the military but needed money to get diapers for his kiddos. I felt like I learned a lot from him. He loves his wife and his brother and I hope he will find them. That's just the love and groovy appreciation you get when you're getting beaned up. They came 3 per order and were of decent size. I can't find anything wrong with this place. The reviews before mine are so up and down, I am trying to figure out why some were bad, and I can only assume it was from people who are more into the yuppy pre-fab starbucks atmosphere, who knows. Here's my take: Atmosphere: Comfortable, airy, spacious, not too cold (some places have the air conditioner cranked so high you are cold in 5 minutes, not here, it's perfect). It has that worn in feel without feeling dirty. The park right across the street is beautiful. Coffee/Tea: I had the Chai latte. It is REAL chai (YAY) first time I've EVER seen a coffee shop make their own chai instead of using a syrup. So BIG kudos here. The chai itself was good, though I like mine spicier. Priced like any other coffee shop nowadays. Desserts: I had the vegan blueberry poundcake. It was moist, dense, sweet without being too sweet, and the icing was great. It didn't remind me of traditional pound cake exactly (with the thick crust), but it was good. Food: I had the vegan breakfast burrito. Holy mountain of protein! This thing was huge and filling, I could only finish half. VERY tasty, whatever the sauce is, it's great. I'm not vegan so I had them add cheddar. Staff: Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Disappointed. Being on a plant-based diet in the south can be a challenge so we listened to Yelpers and tried this place. The coffee was hot but not very flavorful. The peanut butter smoothie was okay. The BBQ tofu sandwich was acceptable. The gluten free--cook's choice tacos were mostly a type of green leaf with a few carrots and black beans added to corn tortillas. The food was lackluster. At first we thought we would give this a 3 star rating but then we remembered the long wait for the food and mostly the noisy, crowded atmosphere. I expect this when there are lots of people but the noise actually came from the music and kitchen staff which would yell out the names of the drinks as they finished making them (across two rooms). They accept cards now with a $5 minimum and I've since tried almost everything on their menu. It's one of the few places in town that is very very veg and vegan friendly. I like their comedy and poetry nights and they host a number of other fun events. The only negative thing I can think of is that it's not the cleanest place but so what?
