This was our only disappointing meal in 4 days of visiting Savannah. The service was outstanding from a young girl named Lexi. She was on point and very friendly, great job overall. The food however was a let down. The She-Crab Soup was very good, but that's about where it ended. They were out of cornbread during our visit. Fried Calamari was very small pieces where the batter took center stage. It was a big portion but it was tough to notice the actual calamari. The Fried Green Tomatoes had a ton of flavor but were overpowered by the pimento cheese. Not a great dish, but certainly wasn't bad either. Then there was the buffet, lots of southern classics like black eyed peas, collard greens and such. I thought the stewed tomatoes and okra were pretty god and the macaroni and cheese was acceptable. The fried chicken had good flavor but the pieces were past their prime. I went for thighs as they are the most forgiving of time and temperature abuse but even the thighs were shriveled and lifeless. The ribs were a bit tough, the mashed potatoes tasted watery, like no butter or cream was involved at all. The beef gravy looked dark and beefy... but had zero flavor. There was one other dish I believe was corn pudding, or perhaps a cornbread stuffing... but it only tasted like watery cornmeal. I had hopes of a nice southern meal with slow cooked sides and savory meats, but the salt and pepper shaker were needed to doctor up my first plate and I lost interest in going back for seconds. The host was immediately rude and irritated that we didn't have a reservation, despite the restaurant being nearly empty on a Tuesday afternoon. The food was awful--think Golden Corral, but worse and more expensive--and definitely not worth it if you don't like seafood. Our server told our toddler he'd get a pirate-led tour of the tunnels if he behaved, which was a big reason we came. After eating, we were told there was no pirate on staff and no tours at all. Our son was disappointed, and things got even worse when the manager walked by and knocked his Dum Dum out of his hand without apologizing, just saying he could get another one. Being honest, this isn't a place I would've picked but it was great! We were staying nearby and starving and this hit the spot. Easy wheelchair access and its own parking lot. This was an amazing dinner! We came for my daughter's 5th birthday . Everyone was so amazing and nice. I got the pecan chicken which was okay it wasn't my favorite but my husband got the shrimp,fish, and fried oysters po/boy which was amazing! The sauce it came with was amazing as well! If you're expecting a cheesy, "theme park" pirate vibe, this isn't it--the atmosphere is perfect because it's actually authentic, with real history tied to the building that you can feel as soon as you walk in. The ambiance of this restaurant is all things pirate! Walking into this place feels like stepping back in time. The floors and walls are wooden as with the hostess table. They had an open chest with a booty of lollipops. When we got to the table we noticed the children's menu doubled as a pirate hat, mustache, and earrings. What a cute touch! We unfortunately did not and couldn't get a table but we were able to order Togo from the bar, and walk around the restaurant and their souvenir shop! Very interesting decor obviously heavily skewed towards a pirate theme. Our waitress got to us very quickly, providing us waters and whatever beverage we chose. I did not have reservations, but I was happy to wait about 30 minutes for a table after seeing how well-reviewed this place was. I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary bread basket. It came with the most delicious cornbread and biscuits, served alongside a pineapple or some type of fruit preserve and butter. Such a nice way to start the meal. I ordered the corn fritters and shrimp appetizer. I was expecting more of a corn nugget, but what came out was more like a patty, similar to hot water cornbread with corn mixed in. It was topped with a flavorful remoulade and three shrimp skewered on top. Creative, hearty, and very tasty. For dinner, I had the gumbo and fried shrimp. The gumbo was more of a creole gumbo with a tomato base, served with red rice. The flavor was really good, just different from a traditional dark roux gumbo. The fried shrimp were perfectly golden, crispy on the outside, and tender inside. Overall, The Pirate House gave me a memorable Savannah dining experience. Always a joy! Being from the south I brought an "out of towner " here to showcase what the south is truly about and The Pirates house did not disappoint. Our server was knowledgeable and charming. The house itself is a star attraction and a vital part of Savannah history, combine that with wonderful southern cooking and it's a match made in heaven for tourists. The price for the food is incredibly reasonable and the fact you can get an exciting history lesson is added joy! Also should mention they offer the opportunity for a guided tour of the building and grounds after your meal for no additional fee. What a fun experience we had for dinner here! Our waiter was very friendly & attentive. A pretend "pirate" walks around in character, talking to guests, cracking a joke here & there. This restaurant is very old and contains many stories of folklore. There are many rooms and hallways to wander through. There's a "spooky" feel but not scary. Food was delicious! I will caveat and say that this does seem to be a good place if you have young kids and / or on a budget. Aside from that, I wouldn't come back unfortunately. They were very good. I thought the price was a bit high for how many you get it. We decided on the buffet. It was small and it did not have a lot that I liked on it. My Mom felt the same way. Not a big variety. Hard to get through the hallway when they have tours going on. They have different rooms you sit in, we happen to be sat in a room pretty far from buffet. It was ok. Very touristy spot, the kind of spot that's got a paper at each spot with the history of the place and word search or other kid games on the back. Yet the food was quite pricey. Many of the entrees were 30-40 which you'd expect for some place far more upscale. We started with the calamari which was fine. Like that they added a little basil oil to it, but otherwise pretty standard. My wife got shrimp and grits which she liked but didn't indicate it was anything special or amazing. I got the honey pecan fried chicken which was a massive amount of chicken. Should've been shared between two people. It was a good flavor and I liked it but felt almost like I was eating a dessert, there was so much honey and sweetness to it. And it was served with some sweet potatoes which were delicious but more sweet flavor. Again, I liked it but don't think I would get it again. It came with a small portion of mashed sweet potatoes and I asked for broccolini instead of the mixed veggies. The chicken was about average sized. My husband and I had dinner on Friday night. Our reservation was for 7:45 and we were seated promptly. The outside of the restaurant is intriguing, especially knowing it is over 250 years old. The inside has pirate-style decor, and there is a pirate-in-residence who will take any interested parties on an historial tour of the place. We sat beside an old stairwell that led to a tunnel. The legend is that pirates would get unassuming patrons drunk on rum, and then carry them through the tunnels back to their ships, as free (forced) labor. I had the she-crab soup and the Santa Fe pasta. The soup was so rich and creamy that I was almost full before my entree came. The pasta was delicious--I liked the shrimp, but the gator sausage was the star of the dish! My husband had shrimp and grits. He said it was absolutely delicious.
