It is one of the city's oldest buildings and originally served as an inn and gathering place for sailors and pirates. I would give the overall experience 3 stars mainly because the food did not live up to the setting. I'll admit, I kind of had a feeling looking at the buffet that it might not be the highlight, but I really wanted fried chicken, so I went for it. If you visit, I would recommend ordering à la carte rather than doing the buffet. The buffet was underwhelming - the fried chicken was decent and the mashed potatoes were good, but most of the other dishes were forgettable. The à la carte options looked much more appealing, and I would lean toward the sandwiches and burgers based on what I saw. This restaurant was highly recommended by travelers on social media and even our tour guide. The restaurant was nice, the staff were friendly, polite, and accommodating. Our waitress, Veronica, was very attentive to our requests and needs. There's a pirate ‍ that roams around the restaurant interacting with guests as they dine and apparently a tour that we heard offered to others with small children. There's a treasure box near the entrance filled with lollipops They also have a gift shop upstairs. The menu was plentiful but honestly not picky-eater friendly, when you have teens that prefer tenders over delectable foods. One of the teens and I had the catfish with "creamy" grits and collard greens. The catfish was fried to perfection but fell short on flavor, the grits weren't as creamy as imagined but worked well with the catfish because they were a little more flavorful. I wasn't a big fan of the collard greens, they were a little vinegary and overly seasoned. There were no side options to choose from either. My son had the award winning pecan fried chicken and he enjoyed it. My other teen had the Mardi Gras pasta with chicken. She stated that the sauce was flavorful but the chicken was bland. My husband tried the gumbo with chicken and said it was a little too salty for his liking. We also tried a couple of appetizers, crab dip and spring rolls. The girls and I had the crab dip, it was delicious but the naan was overcooked on the outside and undercooked on the inside. The guys had the spring rolls and had no complaints. They also offered complimentary biscuits. You don't often find historic restaurants--or places that could easily be dismissed as tourist attractions--that also serve truly outstanding food. Because of that, I came in with fairly low expectations, but I left thoroughly impressed. The restaurant has a fascinating history and a great atmosphere, but what really stood out was the quality of the food. We started with a couple of appetizers, and every one of them was excellent. For our entrees, we tried the shrimp and grits and the fried seafood platter. The shrimp and grits were exceptional. The sauce had incredible depth of flavor, the grits were perfectly smooth and creamy, and the shrimp were cooked just right--tender, delicate, and never rubbery. The fried seafood platter was equally impressive. The white fish had a light, crisp breading that enhanced the flavor without overpowering it. The fish itself was moist, flaky, and cooked perfectly. The fried oysters practically melted in your mouth, with none of the graininess that fried oysters can sometimes have. The fried shrimp were outstanding as well--so good that several people at our table couldn't resist stealing a few from my plate! Our server was fantastic. He offered excellent recommendations, described each dish in detail, answered all of our questions, and checked on us regularly throughout the meal without ever being intrusive. We also enjoyed learning about the restaurant's history from a tour group that passed through while we were dining. My fried green tomatoes were delicious but I felt the tomato portion was too small and the delicate flavor was lost because of the very strong and generous portion of pimento cheese that was under each tomato. I love pimento cheese but usually with crackers. I can't just eat it straight off a fork so I ended up leaving 2/3 of it behind. My she-crab soup was delicious but as I kept eating it became more and more salty. I didn't use any extra seasoning on it myself either. My mom's calamari was good but it started to get tough to chew pretty quickly and it seemed like it was a frozen product that came already breaded and not made fresh. When you're in a town near the ocean seafood is usually one of the highlights but not for us today. My husband loved the fried chicken from the buffet but that is really the only notable item he mentioned. This was our only disappointing meal in 4 days of visiting Savannah. The service was outstanding from a young girl named Lexi. She was on point and very friendly, great job overall. The food however was a let down. The She-Crab Soup was very good, but that's about where it ended. They were out of cornbread during our visit. Fried Calamari was very small pieces where the batter took center stage. It was a big portion but it was tough to notice the actual calamari. The Fried Green Tomatoes had a ton of flavor but were overpowered by the pimento cheese. Not a great dish, but certainly wasn't bad either. Then there was the buffet, lots of southern classics like black eyed peas, collard greens and such. I thought the stewed tomatoes and okra were pretty god and the macaroni and cheese was acceptable. The fried chicken had good flavor but the pieces were past their prime. I went for thighs as they are the most forgiving of time and temperature abuse but even the thighs were shriveled and lifeless. The ribs were a bit tough, the mashed potatoes tasted watery, like no butter or cream was involved at all. The beef gravy looked dark and beefy... but had zero flavor. There was one other dish I believe was corn pudding, or perhaps a cornbread stuffing... but it only tasted like watery cornmeal. I had hopes of a nice southern meal with slow cooked sides and savory meats, but the salt and pepper shaker were needed to doctor up my first plate and I lost interest in going back for seconds. I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary bread basket. It came with the most delicious cornbread and biscuits, served alongside a pineapple or some type of fruit preserve and butter. Such a nice way to start the meal. I ordered the corn fritters and shrimp appetizer. I was expecting more of a corn nugget, but what came out was more like a patty, similar to hot water cornbread with corn mixed in. It was topped with a flavorful remoulade and three shrimp skewered on top. Creative, hearty, and very tasty. For dinner, I had the gumbo and fried shrimp. The gumbo was more of a creole gumbo with a tomato base, served with red rice. The flavor was really good, just different from a traditional dark roux gumbo. The fried shrimp were perfectly golden, crispy on the outside, and tender inside. Overall, The Pirate House gave me a memorable Savannah dining experience. The host was immediately rude and irritated that we didn't have a reservation, despite the restaurant being nearly empty on a Tuesday afternoon. The food was awful--think Golden Corral, but worse and more expensive--and definitely not worth it if you don't like seafood. Incredibly fun history and gem of the area! Certainly get a reservation before heading over! We unfortunately did not and couldn't get a table but we were able to order Togo from the bar, and walk around the restaurant and their souvenir shop! The house itself is a star attraction and a vital part of Savannah history, combine that with wonderful southern cooking and it's a match made in heaven for tourists. The price for the food is incredibly reasonable and the fact you can get an exciting history lesson is added joy! Also should mention they offer the opportunity for a guided tour of the building and grounds after your meal for no additional fee. What a fun experience we had for dinner here! Our waiter was very friendly & attentive. A pretend "pirate" walks around in character, talking to guests, cracking a joke here & there. This restaurant is very old and contains many stories of folklore. There are many rooms and hallways to wander through. There's a "spooky" feel but not scary. Food was delicious!
