It is merely not impressive. I make a habit of ordering tonkatsu ramen at new establishments--a reliable test of a restaurant's competence. You order the same dish everywhere and you learn, very quickly, who knows what they're doing. Mekka does not. Their tonkatsu ramen was a study in haphazard decision-making. The crispy fish cake, for instance, had been deep-fried with such confidence that no one bothered to consider what would happen when it met hot broth. It became soggy. There it was: soggy. The noodles possessed an unsettling firmness. The broth was adequate. The pork was appropriately tender. The soft-boiled egg, however, had not been soft-boiled so much as half-boiled, arriving at your bowl in a state of philosophical confusion. I gave it two stars, which feels generous until you learn that they donate a portion of proceeds to a Vietnamese charity. Why they've decided that American diners should subsidize overseas philanthropy instead of, say, improving their ramen, remains unexplained. Noble, perhaps. Logical, certainly not.

Eggplant and Sweet Potato was tender and had a deep caramelized onion flavor. The chutneys really carry the load in terms of flavor and added bursts of spice, acidity, and sweetness. Their Mango Ginger Lassi was also delightfully gingery. It cuts through a lot of the sweetness and offers a very spiced, almost medicinal quality, to the lassi, which was unique. I pass by this stand all the time and it's always been so intriguing since the dosa is iconically large.
