I had come in since my Hawaiian environment was way different from the chill in the air of California. My skin was in desperate need of a hydrating moisturizer. I ended up buying a really good smelling jar by Origins and a mask. The salesperson came to me after she finished helping another customer. She gave me a sample of an IT moisturizer but it wasn't the one I came in for featured in an email that morning. Strangely both products rang up higher than signed. Twenty dollars more had me question the ring up. While she called for her supervisor on the phone, I went to get the price sign. I'm poor...so I can't resist a freebie, especially when it comes to cosmetics! I saw a freebie print out online for Lorac your choice of a sample size bronzer or lip gloss, valid only at Sephoras inside JC Penney locations. I went today and noticed all of the sales girls were busy, so I went up to the register & waited in line as the woman behind the cash register had to re-ring a customer who changed her mind & wanted to use her JC Penney card. She kept telling me she'd be right with me or ask one of the other girls to help me when she was freed up. Turns out they were out of the Lorac samples, but the woman on the register said she could make me samples of anything liquid. I looked around for a couple minutes & was on my way out, when the woman stopped me, and asked me if I wanted any samples or had any questions. She was extremely knowledgeable and helpful and gave me 2 Sephora foundation samples & some Murad samples that were behind the register. She goes beyond customer service expectations! I unfortunately did not get her name, but guaranteed, if she's there you'll notice her! This is probably the best thing inside Tanforan in terms of retail stores. However, due to its size of about a third to a quarter of a regular Sephora store, it has very limited amount of products. Their counters include Smashbox, NARS, Bare Escentuals, Too Faced, Stila, Hello Kitty, Murad, Anastasia, Korres, etc.; about 4-5 shelves of fragrances; and a nail bar. If you're looking for the popular brands, you'll probably find your items here easily. There's very few traffic hence the store is quite organized. On the right hand side of the cashier, you'll find all the sales items based on the store's inventory. Sometimes, you can redeem coupons that are only applicable at Sephora inside JC Penney, so this location is perfect! If you enjoy feeling like a thief then this place is Heaven for you. The other day my daughter and her 2 friends (all 14yo) went in to look for a new concealer/foundation, my daughter bought something then as they were exiting JCPenney they were stopped by loss prevention told if they didn't come with them the police would be called and they had video evidence proving that they shoplifted!!! Scared, they went, backpacks were searched and they walked out with nothing but a half assed apology!!! I'll be honest. I usually get drug store cosmetics. I don't normally step into cosmetics specific stores. I avoid them because I enjoy saving money with cheaper cosmetics and I hate being approached with hard sales. Thanks to Tina, my experience was awesome and I left happy. I did this one particular day I did go to Sephora because I wanted to get nice gifts for my middle sister. I know she loves makeup, especially Kat Von D cosmetics, and I searched online for the nearest store that had it. I went to this location with my pre-schooler and infant along with a good friend of mine. My two girls were feeling under the weather and anxious after being in the mall for so long. They just wanted to be held and cuddled by me, even though my friend offered to help. When I entered the area, Tina greeted me warmly and asked how she could be of help. I let her know what I was looking for and she gave great suggestions. In fact, I took the first suggestion for my sister and asked for Kat Von D cosmetics to add to it. I also asked about her foundation because her makeup was flawless. My favorite foundation cream was discontinued and I couldn't find it anywhere. I wanted a replacement. Tina was very helpful in finding the right shade and type of foundation for me. She was patient and understanding about two skirmish girls being on my lap while she tested the foundation on my skin as well. I appreciated that she was so pleasant and understanding the whole time. In the end, I decided I would wait on getting foundation for myself as my sister was priority. She didn't push the sale on me at all. Instead, she offered to make me a sample of the foundation to take home and when I was ready, I can purchase it. Wow! How nice not to be pressured into buying. Tina made checking out very easy and she was very informative. She explained the rewards program as well as the JC Penney card. She offered free gifts for my birthday (my middle sister and I were both born in April) upon signing up for the Sephora rewards. She's a pro at her job! As a person who works in the retail industry as well, I could tell the workers here didn't give a shit. My friend and I came in for one of those 10min makeover, I wanted to expose her to makeup and I was in the market to buy some new stuff. Mind you, BOTH of us wanted makeovers done, there was some miscommunication with the workers so only my friend got help. The girl that was helping my friend was so nice, she was wearing glasses, and had longer hair(I'm sorry I forgot your name). When she left to go on her break, i expected another worker to help me, but I had to flag one down to help me. As she was helping me, she was very informative but she said one thing that stuck with me to write this. As she was doing my brows, she kept saying "omg your brows are so hard to work with." Besides the Sephora in downtown San Francisco and Stonestown Galleria, this JC Penney carries a Sephora since they got rid of all their beauty counters and replaced it with a Sephora. Though I'm not a fan at all of JC Penney, I've come here about three times to visit their Sephora. First off, they have poor customer service. The area is small already yet they fail to acknowledge their customers.. secondly, I always think they beauty experts hire the best, in service and in beauty obviously... and not to sound too rude but the cashiers weren't very admirable as much as the make-up artists at the downtown location. It was a good idea for Sephora to carve out a section inside JC Pennys. The staff at this Sephora mini-store is so much nicer than any of the other ones I've been to, 10 times nicer than the Sephora store in the Stonestown Galleria who don't even acknowledge you. I came in for my free birthday gift - a sm box with a small sample lipstick and mascara inside. It's a benefit for being a Beauty Insider member, whichis also free. They were also giving out small samples of the fragrances they carry in the store, so I got a tiny sample of Michael Kors Gold and since she didn't have enough to fill the tube, she gave me a full tiny tube of the regular Michael Kors. Hubby got me a sample of Miss Dior with the sample tube he received. If you're in Tanforan and need to shop at Sephora, I'd recommend this one. read more

I only go to this location if I'm already in the mall and bored, or really need something that that I know they sell. The younger girls that work here are usually friendly, but know NOTHING about makeup. They cannot do their own makeup nicely, let alone do yours. They aren't even very knowledgeable about the products they sell. No joke, I know more about Sephora products than they do. Be warned, they are not make up artists. They are young girls/ women who just applied for a job at the mall. They are not "beauty experts." They are recent high school graduates with no prior makeup experience, and definitely not cosmetologists. They do not do special occasion makeup. The only rude person I've seen here was an older woman, maybe in her 40's. I think she is the manager. If I come here in scrubs after work, she treats me better than she does when I come in on my day off in a t shirt, jeans, and sneakers. No joke. Overall, avoid this location unless you're really in a fix. Spend the extra few minutes to drive down to the Burlingame location, or better yet, the Powell or Union st location. Both times the SA's that helped me were super helpful and nice. I asked for a sample of something and the SA did not skimp on the sample as it was so full it was starting to leak from the container. Thank goodness for the bag it was in. I came by earlier this week to inquire information about the new urban decay palette and SA that helped me was super informative. I have noticed walking by this place that they have a little sale shelf that can be hard to miss if you're not paying attention which has some good deals sometimes. Haven't been inside a JCPenneys since I was a little kid. However, a beauty emergency had me looking for the nearest Sephora and according to the website, it was INSIDE JCPenneys. Wow! Totally separate and totally packed with the good stuff. Thanks to the extremely attentive and knowledgeable service of the perfect complexioned beauty guide, I found my impossible-to-find product + got samples for a new product + (!!!) got a great deal on a fragrance (80% off retail) that Sephora has decided to no longer carry. I am an avid Sephora shopper- pretty much the one store I shop at the most. This Sephora in Jcp is one I do not at all recommend. The customer service is horrible, the workers just gossip amongst each other, and also give dirty looks and make you feel like you are stealing. I am a VIB Rouge member, and they act as if I'm about to rob the store. One thing I do like is that it is more spacious than it use to be and the makeup studio is good sized. Other than that, go to the Sephora in Burlingame or San Mateo. Burlingame's Sephora has very friendly make up artists and also employees. I visit this store quite often. It's small and doesn't carry some brands that the regular Sephora's carry, but it works. And, it's convenient. Most of the time I get pretty decent customer service and some of the workers have begun to recognize my face. But today, Sunday 4/12, @4:30pm I asked for a sample at the register. The girl ringing me up was super sweet and offered so I took her up on it. Her other coworker who happened to help me was pretty rude. She seem liked she was annoyed I even asked. I thought her being condescending was all in my head until I got home and opened up the sample she gave me. As you can see, it's practically empty. This isn't even enough for me to try the product. I came here during the VIB sale and it was decently crowded (6-7 customers). This branch has certain brands that regular Sephoras do not carry, such as TooFaced and Lorac. This was the purpose of my visit because I wanted an item that the Burlingame one didn't have. I made eye contact with a sales associate and expected her to greet me, but instead she looked away. I approached her and asked if they had my item in stock, but she snapped at me and said they didn't. I felt unwelcomed and annoyed so I left without buying anything because I did not want to contribute to this branch. I'm a big Sephora customer but this location is the worst one I have been to. This location is such a hidden gem especially since it's in a mall that is nearly deserted lol They just renovated the space and it definitely offers the Sephora experience regardless of it being located in JC Penny. Easily one of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I'm a person who tends to brush these things off, so this will be my first time writing a review for any matter. I had an issue with an order that I placed at this store to be sent home. I was told it would be delivered in 3-5 days. Never got a confirmation email. Came back in 5 days later to confirm if the order was even processed. The young lady behind the register offered no help. I wanted to check if they had a record of it in their system, but she told me to wait for the confirmation email until the next day. Really? For a confirmation email? When I urged for a better answer, she seemed irritated at me, then she rudely turned to her associate who was more professional but not any more helpful. I ended up having to call JCPenney customer service, and I was told it was delivered that morning. Never received the package. Not only have they stopped carrying many high end brand name products, the girls that work there are complete IDIOTS! I called ahead of time on three separate occasions for three different products to check if they were in stock before I made the trip to the store. I was even reassured by one girl that she was "looking directly at the product, & that there was plenty available." The attitude I got from this employee infuriated me enough to call the store to speak to a manager. After being on hold for 10 minutes only to be hung up on I decided to write this review. This Sephora is placed in JC Penny's. I do not shop at JC Penny's at all. To me this location is fairly small, but it is very clean and pretty okay stocked whenever I randomly walk past it. I usually go to the Sephora at the JC Penny's at Serramonte mall, but I am glad I went to this one today. I went into Sephora not really having a direction to what I wanted to purchase. The only available associate that I ran into was the beautiful Geli. When I walked up to her, she was finishing up on making a sample for another customer. She smiled at me and said she would be right with me, and to have a seat at the mirror station. The mirror station was very clean and well organized. Geli approached me, and said, "Hello!!! How are you? My name is Geli, and what can I help you with today?" I explained to Geli that I am taking headshots tomorrow, and I am in search for a very light and natural looking foundation. She was very thrilled to help me with my search, and she explained to me how her foundation was powder and not liquid. I couldn't believe it because it looked so natural on her face, and she quickly introduced me to the product. Before introducing me to the product, Geli got a special gun to match my color properly. After scanning my cheek, forehead, and chin she accumulated the perfect powder for me. She also introduced me to a very soft and amazing moisturizer. Geli put the boscia clear complexion moisturizer on my hand and told me to rub it all over my face. After applying the moisturizer, she picked up a clean brush and started to swirl the brush into the powder foundation. She informed me the proper way to apply the powder was to shake it a little, swirl the brush on the top part of the powder, and to slightly tap the brush on the edge of the container before applying to my face. As she applied to my face, the powder begin to come on smoothly and very lightly. The powder left my face looking very bare as if no makeup was applied. After applying my foundation, she took it a step further by contouring my face, as well as, adding blush and a little highlighter to my cheeks. Geli was so welcoming and well taught how to apply my makeup that I wish I could of had her do my makeup fully before attending my headshot photoshoot for tomorrow. Great customer service is so hard to come across, and I'm glad I asked Geli for her help because she gave me that in more. In conclusion, I am pleased with the outcome of my makeup. Geli was well trained and knowledgable of every product she applied to my face, allowing me to know which products cause wrinkles, will keep my makeup looking fresh all day, and will not break out my perfect skin complexion. If you visit Sephora, please go in to see Geli! I visited this location today inside of JC Penny to pick up items I'm out of. The store is a complete mess. Items are all over shelves and very unorganized. Many of the staff were actively trying to get out of assisting customers. I had one walk away from me as I approached her. I could only find two of the items I needed due to the disorganization. The staff would stand in groups and talk to each other. The sister of one of the staff was there with about 5 of her friends, and they stood in a group and chatted for 15 minutes. This Sephora is literally always DISGUSTING. Never stocked, lipsticks always unshaven, foundations dirty and the Beauty Studio is never stocked with brush cleaner, makeup remover nor alcohol. I went in yesterday just to browse around and barely wanted to buy anything. The Beauty Studio's makeup remover/alcohol pump bottles were all broken with no caps; how are clients supposed to take off makeup/sanitize makeup to try on?? I wanted to buy the Lolita liquid lipstick which I assumed would be out of stock, but to my surprise the drawer in the bottom literally had BAGS and BAGS of Lolita lipstick. I was tempted to up-stock things myself! I also wanted to buy an eyelash curler which I know Sehpora gets TONS of and there were none! Again, opened the drawer and BAM! TONS of eyelash curlers! I just do not understand how such a tiny space cannot be kept clean and organized by the staff there. Then to make things worse, I went to try on a highlight from Becca and when I opened, it was completely shattered inside and got all over the place! I love Sephora. I was pretty excited to hear they were opening a Sephora inside JC Penny. Yes, this one isn't as big as the other ones but the staff is very courteous and friendly. They do answer your questions and are honest with you, and are willing to assist you on whatever you need.
