There is nothing more unpleasant then opening your suitcase and noticing that you failed to pack your makeup bag. I shudder at the thought. Even worse, having to shell out big bucks while on vacation to purchase all those necessary items. Lucky for me, this Sephora store was located near our hotel! But after scanning thru the reviews, I was dreading coming here more than wandering around for days without any makeup. It's true. Lucky for me, my experience was not horrendous like a lot of the reviews. The staff was nice, even helpful and pointed me in the right directions to get all my necessities. I'm quite disappointed with my experience at this location. I'm not sure if I was being judged by my age or my lack of "style" (Sorry for wearing my Hello Kitty shirt.), but it was almost impossible for me to get help. When I did finally flag down someone, it didn't seem like she knew what she was doing. I had asked her simple questions like: "What product would you recommend?" "What do you think of this shade for my skin color?" and "Could you please help me?" and she would stare at my for a few seconds, looking like a robot having trouble processing information. I almost expected to see "Please wait.. loading..." to flash across her forehead. You'd think they'd hire professionals at this joint. Good job, Sephora. Like Augestus in the factory. Like glandular fever during fresher week. Like Viagra in the 90s. So was my trip to Sephora. Lotions, potions, powders and perfumes. Did I need any of it? Hmmm. Did I leave with four free gifts because I had spent so much money? Hmmm. One of the many highlight from my shopathon, was meeting Farnaz . Boy did that lady have a nose on her! For me, there are pinpointable things in life that are a turn on. A confident (not arrogant) man who is not afraid to put himself out there with regards to a girl he like. I appreciate that we have a new breed of super-bitches who have forgotten what kindness means, but I guess that's why it's so special to meet a guy who's still givings it a whirl despite that. Anyway I digress, so yes, confidence is a turn on, but so is being excellent and passionate about what you do. I'm by the fragrances and needed some help making selections, and spraying and sniffing takes forever if you haven't a clue to begin with. Thankfully Farnaz was on hand, and these two astonishing things happened. 1) I wanted to buy a friends some aftershave but didn't know what he currently worn. I smelt a few that I knew from the past but I wasn't quite sold. Farnaz like a breath of fresh air swooped in asked me a few questions about my friend and smells I like on boys, and in less than a minute she returned with the perfect selection. Really I'm not just saying that, it was edible it was so good. So much so that KB ditched her other half's usual and got this one instead! 2) It was my sister birthday the following day, so what better gift than to get her the perfume she loves, but could I remember what it was called? Of course not, but did that matter to our resident perfume blood hound? Of course not. Literally all I could remember was the colour of the bottle. I knew that I would know it if I saw it, but what were that chances. From my less than poor offering as a description, Farnaz was able to point out the bottles that matched. It was unbelievable, the first bottle she picked up, was my sisters perfume! Outstanding. I have only ever met two other "scent sommeliers" of this caliber and really it is a sight to behold. I have been a customer of Sephora's for 12 years. I saved up my points over these years and was not aware that they would expire. I never received an email telling me I would lose my points if I didn't make a purchase. I contacted customer service to see if they could work with me this one time since I had no warning I was going to lose my points. They told me they could add points back to my account but needed a valid reason and my reason wasn't valid and they would not add any back for me. I would think their lack of communication would be a valid reason. I would have never let all my points expired if I knew there was a possibility of losing them. At a Sephora in Washington DC I decided that they were allowed to spy on my purchases so I signed up for their card. There are no benefits to their card - except a free birthday gift. That's the least they could do. So my birthday comes around, my email tells me I can go pick up a free sample size body lotion - Whoopdidoo. So I am passing by and decide to run in to pick it up. I am all excited - mostly to profess - Its my birthday! - and one sales associate brings me up to a manager to await my gift (she is on the phone) . This manager gets off the phone after I've been waiting there and tells me that the only way I'm getting a free birthday surprise is if I wait in a long ass line. I straight up walked out. This manager was uber rude. Just give me my free gift! Not to mention - I sometimes see people from planet mars in her. No really one older woman came in to put make-up all over her face in all the wrong places and colors. OK I know its downtown granted. But the level of service could be way better! I usually like to go to sephora to find someone knowledgeable to help me choose the latest products that match my skin. In this case I buy lots of wonderful stuff. Every time I come here I feel like I'm a little at the candy store, especially when I walk out excited about my new shiny toy. This one particular visit I needed an industrial strength concealer for my scars. Kim was a sweetheart as she helped me pick out the right texture and shade (this was a good 30 min process). Seriously, who knew there would be 15 types of conceal alone! Can't beat their satisfaction policy; try it out, don't like then bring it back. This review is for the Westfield location. I'm not sure if they hired completely new staff for this location or not, but it is definitely not the same experience as the original location by the cable car turnaround. There isn't enough people working the registers so the line is long, but unlike the original location, it also moves really slowly. During my latest trip, there was only two people at the registers and two working the floor. I ended up in line for 20-30 minutes, and finding staff to answer my questions was pretty much impossible. Both workers were already helping customers, and once I was able to get help, I realized what had taken so long for the staff member to finish helping her previous customer. Apparently Sephora is more interested in selling products than advising customers in their purchase of the most helpful products. I wanted advice for which one of two setting sprays she would recommend for my skin type, but she curtly said both were great and then tried to sell me primers that I never asked for. I don't think I'll be returning to this location. Until the original location reopens in November, I'll be going to the Marina location where it's a lot less crowded and the staff at least tries to be helpful. read more

grade school. assignment: give a how-to presentation to the class. i gave a makeup tutorial. no, knee scrapes and tree climbing are not markers of my childhood. i was too busy cutting up and altering my gym uniform, attempting to invent a new perfume, and learning the art of makeup application. perhaps i would've gotten extra credit that day if i knew and took full advantage of places like sephora. it is the mecca of affordable face accessorizing and can be a bit intimidating for one who wears makeup a few days out of the year. ..think wal-mart or target. for your face. jennifer, the gorgeous latina sales rep, assisted me in finding my new perfect scent for only $50. i was a big fan of three particular perfumes, and jennifer was kind enough to provide a sample of the two that didn't make the cut. she was very helpful, and i didn't feel rushed or pressured to make a purchase. desmond's friendly demeanor was the epitome of quality customer service. he even saw that my birthday was approaching and offered me a complimentary sephora goody! i'm a little disappointed that they don't carry my eyelash adhesive and lancome lip gloss of choice, but the pros of sephora definitely outweigh the minute cons. read more

It's all about efficiency here, my friends. This can be added along with the three free samples you get with any online purchase. Just last week, I scored a Philosophy "Miracle worker" box set containing six product samples. One thing I love about Sephora here on Powell street is that I'm always greeted when I walk in. And about after having browsed the store for no more than 1 minute, a sales associate comes to me and asks if I need help and/or have been helped. Aweeesomeee! This Sephora is always well stocked with items. Never have I experienced an item that I wanted that wasn't stocked. Sales associates know the products well and if they don't know it, they wont lie to you -- they'll go ask another sales associate for their opinion. What I hate about all Sephoras is that the line to pay is always surrounded by little fun-sized items: lip balms, lip glosses, perfumes, mascaras, lotions, etc. I always slap myself for buying these products but I make it ok in my head by saying "...it's okay Heidi, it's cute." read more

There are very few beauty items that I buy regularly that they don't carry (Maybelline mascara - i have nice lashes and can't justify spending more than $7 on mascara that works the same as $20 on me). The Sephora brand has lots of fun eye shadow colors and great eye liner colors. They could care less here how much make-up you test and don't buy which is fabulous and probably makes me spend more here! I just had the worst Sephora experience of my life. Now don't get me wrong, I am a loyal Sephora customer so hear me out. Everyone looked unhappy to see me, no one smiled and they all treated me like I just wanted to use their demo's to put on makeup. I came in the store with my full face done already but I just wanted to test out new concealer and foundations. One employee grabbed a few out of my bag since I had too much and said some of these products are exactly like the ones I own, without giving me the opportunity to try it out for myself. They even gave me horrible brushes to use which turned out to be incredibly streaky and cakey for my face. I told them it felt cakey and they said I didn't use primer even though I did?? I don't understand? I also made sure to put all the demo's back in their original place since I know how rude and inconvenient it is for customers to leave products in random places, but I felt like a complete inconvenience in the store with all the negative energy. This location is ass. Specifically my experience with the cash wrap coordinators and returns. Y'all need to level up on training or idk what's up. Last winter, I came to return two products. I insert my chip thinking I'd be refunded. She proceeds to hand me products wrapped in red tissue. I thought oh sick maybe some samples bc the products I recently purchased didn't work out. I mean that has happened to me at SJ's Valley Fair. I go home after a long day to find out I was charged for the two items a second time!! That's $$$. Of my past 5 visits: * No one has greeted me at the door. * I had to hunt for a salesperson--who was apparently bored with the job. * The salespeople have terrible make up sense (and bad hair styling practices--can we at least use a comb, people?) The department store cosmetic hawks scare the shit out of me, so I have always stuck to drug store brands for make-up. No more. Sephora has cured my make-up phobia in the best way. This place is like Candyland. The colors. The sparkles! How can you not loooooove this place? You can browse and browse and even try on stuff, and never once get hounded by an overly made-up bot wearing a lab coat. The store is well-organized, and there are helpful aisle enders that offer up suggestions from the staff about their favorite products. And the people that work there are oh so sweet. When signing up for a discount card the clerk gave me a delicious trio of lip glosses for my birthday...even though it was a week and half passed. Awesome. Honestly would rather go to the Sephora in Westfield. Witnessed multiple rude sales associates here today, which sucks because this location usually has brands others don't. Was also hounded by one associate who asked me in about 15 second intervals if 'I was okay'. I work in sales myself and would never behave that way even if I did think someone might be stealing. Do I have to wear my rouge card on my neck or what? Was also huffed at by another associate when I said 'No thank you' to the offer of a shopping bag. Here's my normal routine when my girlfriend drags me to Sephora: first, find a cologne then shoot myself with it (avoid the eyes because it will probably burn and there is no eyewash station), then proceed to check out all the girls, and finally ponder if I need a moisturizer. And the Sephora experience would not be complete without having every employee ask me if I need help. I am just joking and mostly reviewing this Sephora because I have to be here every time my girlfriend and I go out. From a guy perspective this Sephora is huge, especially compared to other ones I have visited, which includes, Sephora on Union Street (SF) Arden (Sacramento), Roseville Galleria, Stonestown (SF), and Sephora JcPenny (Daly City, Sacramento, Roseville). The employees are always friendly and helpful to my girlfriend. And the huge plus, is that they let me sit while waiting for her to finish. Best part of this Sephora is the location - Union Square. If necessary I can slip out of Sephora, go to Westfield and come right back. What I recommend: Bring something entertaining or just your walking shoes to pass the time while your girlfriend is shopping. Better yet, follow my normal routine recounted above. read more

I've had good experiences at many other Sephora branches all over the US, but this specific branch disappointed me. I went to this Sephora branch just this week, and although there were a lot of people, there were also a lot of staff walking around. I was coming in to buy a new foundation and a Bliss face wash, so I wasn't just one of those people who come in and browse without buying. Maybe I was dressed too casual, who knows, cause I waited for a while until i couldn't stand waiting anymore. So, I finally nicely asked one of the staff to help me pick a new foundation. I told her that the last foundation I used was Bobbi Brown, and although I love it, I felt like trying something new. Guess what she told me? "Oh, I don't have any other foundation to recommend you if you used Bobbi Brown." I literally had to push her to try to help me before she decided to take me to the Guerlain section. And instead of what Sephora and other make up departments do when they're trying to sell their stuff by trying it on your face/hand and helping you pick the right colors, she basically just handed me one of those sponges they have and WALKED AWAY. Didn't even ask me if the color suited me and if I needed any help. RUDE! Maybe it was because I didn't dress professionally on that particular day since it was my day off and I get sick of dressing up every day. But if only she knew, I have been a regular customer of Chanel, Dior, Bobbi Brown, and YSL. Name a designer brand, and I've probably already tried it. I am seriously intimidated by this place. I've walked in a few times looking for gifts for other people and usually leave empty handed. The rows upon rows of lotions and potions just don't make any sense to me. The store is usually really busy so I don't get much help either, not that I have any clue what to ask for. And to make things worse, everything is so expensive. To be fair, I'm not much of a make-up person and generally stick with the cheap hair products that can be found at your local Target or Walgreen's. I made an appointment for my WEDDING about 5 months ago. They just called to cancel my appointment 2 days before my appointment, I even went into the a sephora ( the embarcadero store) to ask about my appointment this past Monday, 3 days ago and not once was I given any sort of warning. Not only am I a beauty insider and did not receive the e mail warning that they were looking into not offering these services in San Francisco, but in San Francisco not only are all other services open at other Stores such as MAC, but had I been given a week's notice I could have easily found another solution. I am appalled and absolutely furious with this notice and cancelation so close to my wedding day. Mind you in the notes it says it is for my wedding so they were aware it wasn't just a normal Makeup appointment. Mac is still offering its services but due to the notice they are all booked up. I will never book another service here again nor would I suggest others. I will also cease buying at all sephora stores and as a beauty insider at a higher level of rewards, that is quite a lot of money I will no longer spending at this company. You should be ashamed of yourselves and really keep your customers more in the loop! Awful. Mind you I fully understand that this is due to COVID 19- this has nothing to do with that and I support services being safe- this goes to more to the notice that was given was horrendous. read more

Review #500 Seeking immortality in a bottle? Well, it doesn't exists but this is as close you can get to immortality! Rows and rows of itty bitty bottles that claims fountain of youth. Do I bite?! You bet. I'll do anything to preserve my skin and look forever young. I came in looking for Shu Umera's cleansing oil because it makes my skin look and feel fantastical. But unfortunately, Sephora does not carry this brand. So, I looked for comparable products. The service is excellent here, the gals/guys was able to point out several options to choose from. I narrowed it down to SK-II or Josie Maran. Both has good reviews by other cleansing oil fans but one cost more than the other. Well, to get things rolling, I chose the less expensive brand, Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil. But after I bought it, I had a sinking feeling in my heart that I picked the wrong one. when I got home, I Googled cleansing oil comparable to Shu Umera Cleansing Oil and discovered a blog. The blog talked about other brands as well as SK-II and Josie Maran but it also said that even though SK-II was expensive, the formula was more substantive and felt luxurious on your skin. You only needed a pump and a half to clean your skin, in which the bottle would last longer than Josie Maran or any other brands. After reading that, I went back to Sephora the next day to retest the cleansing oils on my hand. That blogger was right, it did feel more luxurious and seemed like a better formula than Shu Umera. I went up to the register and easily exchanged Josie to SK-II with zero problems. Been using it for months now and the bottle is definitely stretching out for the buck. My skin has been silky smooth and looks better than ever. I have combo dry/oily skin but cleansing oil does not add to the oily part. In fact, it just seem to balance out my skin to be normal... and I've never had normal skin! I absolutely adore Sephora for what it has to offer. International brands, super nice customer service and great brands/products. This place offers fountain of youth in a bottle but if immortality was sold in a bottle, you bet I'd buy that bottle in a heart beat! NOTE: Busiest Sephora ever, sometimes the lines are crazy crazy long but it usually goes by quick. Good reward program. read more

Perfume Selection: 5 Stars Make-up Selection: 5 Starss Hair Products: 2 Stars Sephora needs to step up its selection of hair products. I am a Kerastase devotee. I have to make a special trip to Yosh to buy my hair crack. The Phyto line is good... but I want more from the hair aisle. Perfume. I could spend hours sniffing away. This store has them all. Sidenote: The anti-theft squad guarding the entrance makes me nervous. I didn't do anything! I swear! You can look in my bag! I know I look guilty but that's because you're GLARING at me. read more

This review is specifically regarding the woman who assisted me with the perfumes today. She was extremely rude.everything I asked to try was disparaged and tainted by her loud opinion . Fragrance is a very personal choice. I was disgusted by her behavior. When I attempted to leave the perfume area to get away from her, she detained me further by offering me more of her opinions on the perfumes she liked or didn't like, it was draining , and put a damper on what should have been an enjoyable experience . I always receive excellent customer service here, so it was a disappointment to be sure. read more

All Sephoras basically carry the same things so this review is based on the service. It STINKS! I feel that the workers here seriously do not care about their customers. Sure, they have someone greeting you at the door, but: 1. It's difficult to find someone to actually help you. 2. When you do, half the time, that person has literally no idea what they're talking about! I like to research my makeup before I buy---so yea, I can tell when workers are def. talking out of their arse. 3. Be prepared for a lot of eye rollings and smirks at the cashier. This being said, I'm an exclusive VIP member...that's right, I spent $500+ here! Probably a good 80% at this particular Sephora store alone! I frequent this store about 3 times a month? That being said, I think it's fair when I demand a bit more respect and help when I need it. Hopefully you'll have better luck than me with their customer service! read more
