I have used SerTech, since they were on Harmon Ct. They have kept my Dynaco (from 1964) tube preamp (PAS3X) and amp (ST-70) functional and sounding great! They do such great work, but that leads to their downfall - they are soo busy that the waitlist is several months long. But even then, I will only take my vintage audio equipment to them. They recently got my Denon turntable working again. And I just submitted another tube amp (Audio Research) with them. They are worth the wait. They are very knowledgeable (common failure modes, components, etc) and are able to troubleshoot all issues that have arisen. read more

I've been there several times in the last ten years, with two Tape Decks, two Stereo Receivers and recently a Turntable. Each time I've had excellent repairs and was happy. Unfortunately now days the wait time can be long but that's not their fault. There are not many places that do vintage stereo repairs so it worth the wait. People drive for miles to go there like myself it almost an hour drive, but I don't mind. I feel their prices are more than reasonable. Top-tier quality service! After 2 years of searching for a place to fix my Technics 1200 turntables, I discovered Sertech. This place is a gem. Whatever the audio issue is, these guys can fix it. They took in both of my turntables and ran a diagnostic within a couple of weeks. After that, they called me with an update and proceeded to do the work. This was all done within the time I had requested. This place gets busy. They get people bringing in equipment from as far as Sacramento! Call SerTecj regarding an estimate to repair a failed Sony carousel CD player and an expensive Onkyo Home Theater Receiver. The technician was familiar with both and shared useful information that parts for these older units are near impossible. He made a recommendation recycle them and move on to newer electronic units which made sense. Some times bad news is really good information and enables one to make sensible decisions. I had a record turntable assembled (a Music Hall mmf1.3, came in about 20 pieces), calibrated, and tested -- it took an hour for him to do so. He squeezed me in between some other jobs so the turnaround was about a day. I guess the fee, which seemed a little high, was standard, but the results were far better than I could have done myself. Took my tape deck here for a belt replacement and with door closing issue. 3 visits (!!) and 6 months (!!) later it's in worse condition than it was when I left it: the door has the same problem and they managed to screw up the counter. The guy kept saying "take it or leave it, I put too many hours into it already, I don't want to work on it anymore" and gave my money back. His answer to why the counter stopped working after two decades in his hands was "I don't know" - with a laugh. Stay away from these amateurs. The owner was so rude to me. He had the nerve to be a smartass and say when I was trying to understand his pricing "Well if you can fix it, then you should fix it!" but I never said I could fix I was just trying to understand his pricing. Basically it's $79 just for him to look at your DVD player and then he wants to charge more money to fix it. Here said anywhere between $150-$200 when I could go buy a brand new on Amazon for $33-39. read more

I had new Wharfedale speaker repair kits installed by Norm at Sertich Electronics. I had these speakers that had all the original drivers and they worked fine for a while. I had used Norm before for other projects and I know that he always said don't buy replacement speakers but I seen some from overseas in England and I just thought man I'll just pop these woofers in. They are four 10 inch woofers. Well, no don't do that just listen to people who do this stuff because from the beginning after I popped them in I knew that they lost presence mostly the lower end to them. I was down at Sertech and asked about the Wharfdale's and he said they had new kits that they have a rim on them before the surround. He said that's what Wharfdale is making now for those speakers. It took about two weeks for a complete repair, the cones, the center caps, which are large again and the spiders that he said were just loose. So I picked them up and popped them in and wow what a big difference you know I mean they sound so beautiful. They had lost a lot more than I thought by buying those replacements. I listen to all kinds of music most of it old music but wow everything sounds so wonderful Classical, blues, R&B, old hip-hop, old electronic music from the 80s when I was growing up I mean everything sounds great I mean wow. I knew not to buy replacements and I won't ever do that again but you know being so busy all the time I thought they'll just send them to my door. Now they are on the shelf and they are nothing to me now. I'm not sure what to do with them because I won't sell them I wouldn't do that to anybody. I can't believe I kept them that long. Sertech is my go-to place for stereo repair. Norm is knowledgable beyond compare. I have collected vintage stereo gear for years and whenever something is in need of repair, Sertech can fix it. Word of caution: Sertech is a two man shop. Sertech services the entire South Bay Area and further. While there might be other repair shops like Sertech, I do not know of any. That being said, Sertech is very busy. It could take a month to repair your equipment. Be patient. Your work will get done, and it will be fixed correctly and inexpensively. read more

Not a very professional customer service experience for me. I took in my receiver, which wasn't making any sound. The interesting old-time stereo enthusiast at the store told me they'd take a look and get back to me with an estimate. But, he said they were busy and it might take two weeks to get back to me. After 3+ weeks and no call, I called the store. The gentleman said they had looked at it and an expensive component in the receiver was not working, and the price of a new component was about $300. He said he was trying to find a lower-priced part on the Internet. It's been months and I haven't heard back from them. As far as I'm concerned, the stereo is a goner. I haven't pressed to get it back because it would just be a boat anchor to me. And I'm not complaining more because they haven't charged me to do whatever diagnosis they did. In summary, it was not a successful repair experience for me, and customer service (getting a call-back and being informed) was sub-par. But, they seem enthusiastic and seasoned, so maybe they're more successful for other customers. read more

They recently fixed my Harmon Kardon surround sound AVR. They have a low diagnosis fee of only $30 which is great. Their prices are resonable too. The thing that keeps them from getting 5-stars: They diagnosed my equipment and never called or emailed to let me know they had figured it out. After a few weeks I emailed (no response) and finally called to find out the status. I approved the repair and they repaired it the next day. read more

I chose these Sertech over the only other competant McIntosh stereo repair I know of up near the Cow Palace for the proximity plus, one of the high end stereo online forums has great things to say about him. They are right, Norman is an expert and he fixed and cleaned up my two pieces of 30+ year old McIntosh stereo gear for a very reasonable cost. $30.00 per item eval/troubleshooting fee but it is applied to the repair. Definitely an 'old school' experience, don't let the disheveled appearance of the shop put you off. He's an electronics guru not a decorator. And you do need to call on the date it's to be done and check in yourself, as others say here, he's not going to chase you on the telephone. A little hard to find, it's on Winfield about a block south of Blossom Hill near the mall there, and take a right into the little low end office strip right past the water slide!
