I am from Santa Cruz & after exhausting all the resources for stereo repair in the area, I got pointed to Sertech. Norman is the man. I have a stereo unit, over 40 years of age (1977) that needed to be brought back from the dead. The places in the Santa Cruz area were not cutting it. Reasonably priced & excellent service; very nice people at Sertech. There are also units that are for sale; nothing like the classic analogue units to bring that sound out from audio tape & vinyl. I entrusted my 40+ years-old KLH Classic Series CL-JR Loudspeakers to SerTech Electronics a couple of years ago and was astonished at the quality of the upgrade they performed. They replaced the failing parts and deteriorated gaskets, and now both speakers work As New! I answered the question above about whether Sertech Electronics Repair can repair portable audio and I said that I'd post an update on my Lloyd's portable stereo (boombox) that I dropped off for repair. I got a call from Norm saying that he could get the replacement part and a few days later my Lloyd's PT-003 boombox was all ready for me to pick up. It works great and it's like new again. I'm actually listening to it as I type this. (Yelp won't let me post a follow up to my answer and cannot edit my answer so I'm posting an update here in my review.) The cost was just $40 for the repair plus the initial $85 diagnosis fee that was charged when I first dropped off my boombox. That was a bargain compared to other repair shops that I consulted. I was just happy that Norm would even work on my boombox since it's not the type of audio equipment that is cherished by audiophiles with deep pockets. It's good to know that Norm will work on all audio equipment, even things like my old boombox that are not exactly "audiophile quality" and only have sentimental value to their owners but absolutely no monetary value to audiophiles. He clearly stated that the only thing that would prevent him from working on my boombox was if replacement parts were not available. Thank goodness all that it needed was a standard off the shelf PC board component and Norm said that it was an easy fix. So if you're a fellow boombox collector like me, don't hesitate to give Norm a chance to make your old classic boombox play like it's 1985 again. read more

I don't generally like to give a review with this low a rating. However based on my personal experience I think two stars is a fair rating for this business. Let me start by saying that Norman, the gentleman who operates Sertech, is a very nice man and a real pleasure to talk with. He seems to be knowledgeable on all types of Hi Fi equipment as well. I am also fully aware that the equipment I brought in for repair is "vintage" and, perhaps not so easy to repair. However, I believe that Sertech's specialty is supposed to be the repair of vintage HiFI & stereo equipment. Among other things they also produce high quality stereo speakers and resale used/collectible equipment. At any rate here are some details of my experiences with Sertech: All three stereo components I took in for repair; a Mac 1900 stereo receiver, a Phillips GA 312 turntable and a Yamaha CR 620 receiver had to be returned to them for further repairs. In other words all three pieces were "come backs" for more repairs that could have and should have been diagnosed & completed the first time in the shop. I feel at the very least I should have been told, when I picked up and paid for the repairs, that there are still issues with how the units sound/play. Also I should have been offered a demo of the equipment to make sure it is working properly before taking it back home. Instead I trusted that they had completed the repairs and gave them "the benefit of the doubt". This was my mistake to be sure. After bringing the equipment home and hooking it up to play, it was very frustrating to find out the repairs had not been completed. It really makes me wonder if they even check their work before releasing the equipment back to the customer! By the way, on each of these components, the price for the repairs was no issue and they had instructions to "go through" everything to make sure all the functions/controls are working and sounding as they should. On the Yamaha receiver for example there are still "dirty pots" that make static noise when they are operated. This is after two stays at Sertech when they were supposed to do a complete check up on the unit and were specifically asked to clean and lube all the controls. On the Phillips turntable for example they had two attempts to repair the hum on the right channel. New RCA cables were even installed. Yet the hum still persist. and is in fact worse than before I took the table into them. Now instead of bringing the turntable into them for a third time I have decided to find another repair service that will hopefully resolve the problem (I plan to write a review of this other service after the turntable issue is resolved). Lastly I have found the communication from Sertech to be poor at best. Based on my experiences If one doesn't make an attempt to contact them, months can pass before one gets a call from them regarding the status of the repairs. The bottom line is I won't be going back to Sertech and will have to find another repair service that will hopefully get things right the first time around and provide a higher level of customer service. read more

Go here for your repairs. I brought a mid-1970s Marantz 2230 receiver here to be fixed. It had several problems. They replaced all 6 transistors, all the lamps (lightbulbs), de-gummed the power button, and re-aligned the radio tuning wheel. This was my dad's receiver that he had my whole life, and it has never looked or worked this good; I'm really happy now. I felt the price charged was reasonable. It was $30 down for an analysis (you don't get that back per se, but they do credit that toward the final bill). The final bill was right at $200. It took them about a week to get around to doing the analysis, and just another day to do the fix. They seem to get a lot of business here and I guess are constantly full of units to fix. Another review mentioned that you should call them to check up. I would recommend that too, but make sure to give a respectable amount of time before calling (if he says 8 days, give him a full 8 days before calling). read more

I called them to see if they can fix my Car Audio speaker, they said they weren't sure, so I offered to send email with pictures of the speaker. They did not call me back. So I called back telling them i sent them Email, the guy tells me they will get back to me. Nobody responded to me ever after. Few people knew he builds his own custom made speakers-cheaper than the big guys, and so good, they will blast you out of the building, He also sets up stereo systems, and even lighting systems and does a great job. The SME Norman repaired my Mcintosh tube amp in weeks and fixed some inherent issues probably from the 60's. It works and sounds great now. Cost is reasonable. One thing worth mentioning is that you do have to call to check the status, and that he does not perform / charge for unnecessary repairs! I got a few more pieces to go too. read more

Got my 30 year old Nakamichi receiver cleaned-up and tuned-up by Stretch. They did a great job and my only gripe is they were so busy that they never called me to let me know my receiver was ready for pick-up. They said they were backed-up with jobs when I dropped-off my receiver, and it will take 5 weeks before they can even start the repair job. But I never heard back from them so I gave them a call, then they could not find my receiver so I had to wait for them to call back. These guys are super busy and it will take awhile to get your equipment repaired, but I was pleased they revived my Nakamichi and got it running again, and the repair was not too expensive. read more

AWESOME speaker repair. Recently, I was given a pair of JBL speakers. I lusted for these very same speakers back when I was in college. When I got them, these JBL's were abused and I mean ABUSED. The woofers were kicked in and the tweeters and mids were blown. The speakers were Toast. The cabinets were scratched and blasted. They were basically a throw away. Norm fixed everything and now they look and play like new. The grilles were missing when I got them and Norm built new grilles for them! The best part of all was Norm's price was darn right CHEAP! I brought my Pioneer SX-1250 in to Sertech for a complete overhaul. The results were amazing and better than I expected. Sonically the amplifier is better than new and they were able to completely fix what minor damage had occurred over the years. Wow, I've read some of these reviews and wonder if this is the same shop. Yes, it is. However I have nothing good to say. My JBL speaker has been at Sertech for 6 months for an alleged amplifier. Took over 3 months to get it diagnosed. 3 more months to find out it needed something in addition too or instead of an amplifier. Still waiting with absolutely no communication from them unless we called inquiring for a status. 6+ months with half a sound system... do they care about customers? We will never use them again, instead I'll take my repairs all the way to SF. Seems to me the shop is a hobby, not a job. The system made me select a star, but no stars from me. read more

Was recommended by an A/V store in Saratoga and made the slight trek out to Sertech. Long story short, it took a while to diagnose the problem, because my unit was from overseas and required 220v, but once WE (I had to call 3 times until we uncovered this nuance) it was fixed within a day. "Stormin'" Norman and his crew of audiophile techs are really good at what they do but like all techies, they take a bit of pushing to get the job done. Although I recognize they have a big queue. In the end, I'm happy with the service and recommend them to anyone that needs to bring an old/broken audio unit back to life. I'm glad to have my surround back in the living room. read more

I agree completely with the other 5 star reviewers - Norm is simply the best I've seen when it comes to consumer electronics diagnosis and repair. He is insightful, vastly experienced, honest, and supremely competent. Altogether a great guy to work with. But like the managerial truism, if you want something done, give it to your busiest person. His shop usually has a long backlog, especially around the holidays. He focuses on getting the job done and will call when done but don't expect him to hound you for pickup. The few complaints you'll find here are probably the results of some the assistants he's had through his shop in the past. He will also make house calls and his shop devotes some space to consignment sales. Note that he has recently changed his diagnosis/ pre-payment fee from $30 to $100, which seems fair to me. read more

Called Norm to get an estimate on fixing some Sony ES audio equipment. He was very helpful and told me to bring the units over. I had bought both these units back in 1998 when I was setting up my home entertainment system. It was more a sentimental need since the DVD and cassette deck have been with my wife and I since we got married and our kids grew up with the 5 disc DVD player. Dropped the units back in early October (Norm is busy and told me it would be at least 6 weeks), and waited patiently. Norm called today to say both units were ready. Picked the units up and am happy with the results. We are lucky to have people like Norm in the Bay area.
