One of the 2 oldest Japanese restaurants in Sunnyvale along with Azuma. Times have changed. Used to be one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in Sunnyvale, before Japanese Tapas places like Gochi, fast food Japanese places like Gombei Bento and Japanese supermarkets like Mitsuwa where you can get sushi/donburi. Very traditional Japanese menu with grilled items, nigiri sushi, sashimi, chawan mushi, bento. Used to be very popular with Japanese natives in the 90s when the Japanese semiconductor companies were all doing well and they sent hordes of engineers and staff to Si Valley. Those days are long gone. 4 stars for the Lunch or Dinner Bentos, lots of variety for ~$20.00. Higher price but better variety. Much better than what you get at Mitsuwa. 3 stars for the sushi. Fresh fish, they don't use second grade ingredients. They used to cut a large piece of fish draped over the rice where fish/rice ratio was 2x fish to rice; many years ago. 4 stars for the noodle soups, not oily, clean broth and base. 3 stars for the chirashi. Good fish/rice ratio, much more fish than others. 3 stars for the daily specials. 4 stars for large groups, tatami room + sake qualtiy better than other places. Quiet. 2 stars for the sashimi. Not enough customer volume. Just had the $60.00 omakase for 1 person. Fish quailty/portion size was below average. Couldn't finish it; was pushed by the waitress over order. SETI is a great sushi joint in the middle of Sunnyvale. We came in at 11:45am on a Tuesday afternoon. We were quickly seated at a two top next to the private dining rooms. We were brought hot tea quickly. The tea was warm and savory. The waiter came over and took our order. He promptly returned with miso soups. The miso was warm, garnished with fresh scallions, and sprinkled with fresh soft tofu. It was decent miso soup, not bad not great. The tempura appetizer was fantastic! No panko insight!!! I like panko but not on my tempura veggies. The tempura sauce was excellent. I am picky when it comes to tempura and my sauce has to be flavorful and thin in texture. Seto's tempura sauce has great flavor but is not too over powering with salt. This allows you to taste the veggies and shrimp while enjoying the sauce. The Seto Chirashi was served in a two tier black box. The fresh fish was on top and the cooked items were served over the rice on the bottom. It was a great portion of fish and a great presentation. It is very comparable to the standard Chirashi version at other local sushi restaurants because of the price and quality of the dish. The amaebi (my staple) was a bit on the fish side. There should be a clean taste to it and the clean fresh taste was not there. The shrimp heads were served immediately after the bodies. The heads were crispy and tasty. I ate the whole head, yum! I also order the spider roll and tekka maki. The rolls were good but on the fishy side. Overall, our experience was above par and we will definitely be back to try out the dinner menu. read more

I dont normally go by myself, so this is base on a group luncheon. I really like the old school style where they have the japanese slider for your group. Good place close to mountain view to handle a single large group. I say single because if there's another large group, you'll need to paper rock scissor for it. The food is A-OK. Private parking lot. Sadly speaking, this place is only at average. Parking is easy though. I ordered the katsu curry with pork... the pork portion was so small that was even totally buried by the curry paste. Taste was ok... not too bad but not great either. My main complaint is more about the service..really unaccommodated. My friend is a vegetarian so she was asking for veggie tempura. The bento box option let you choose two out of several options... but except the tempura, everything else was meat. So my friend asked for two veggie tempura (and I believed the price is actually lower than meat options). The waitress said no with a IDC face. We went to this establishment a few times before. It was not bad. However, tonight we went there with for dinner. The experience was terrible. First off, waitress was indifference and unfriendly. Worst of all, the food was terrible. Fish on sushi was stale. Its color was dull and dark. It was completely dry. No amount of soy sauce was enough to wet it. It was hopeless. Cisco knows his stuff. This dude whipped up 2 rolls, one standard "Seto Roll" and one not "Forever 21" that were knock outs of the park. Definitely recommend trying the forever 21, its a nice refreshing roll with lemon and garlic ponzu that helps change up the normal drab sushi bar hum drum menu. To finish the evening off I tried a couple sets of Nigiri, Yellowtail and Salmon. Holy hell.... He put some FRESH wasabi I mean fresh that put the true explosion on this dish and a very nice touch of searing one of the salmon pieces. Well Done Seto.... Well done.... Seto Tempura House is located on the corner of Maude Ave. and Borregas in Sunnyvale. The entrance is on Borregas. Parking is on the street or in a small neglected lot. The exterior of the building could use a bit of sprucing up. One particularly interesting feature of the restaurant interior is a long table in a semi-private area that could seat 20 persons and it is on the floor. This floor seating has cushions and chair backs and wells for the feet which, though comfortable, is probably less than authentic. ...Great for a group from the office. The wait staff is not in kimonos, but they are knowledgeable and efficient. The bento box offerings are fairly standard. The rice portion is very large, the teriyaki beef is tasty, but the portion is too small, the salmon portion, however, is ample. The salad portion in the box is large but the dressing is not to my liking at all...there is no creaminess to it; it was dry and chunky. Very odd. Since this is a tempura house I am pleased to say that the tempura portion in the bento box is generous and delicious. Its crust is lovely and light and left no trace of oil. It includes one prawn and a variety of vegetables, including eggplant. I did not receive a mushroom which I missed. The dragon roll is fairly spectacular. It consists of all cooked fish... prawn, crab and eel. Very delicious... and very filling. ...A real treat. Miso soup and hot tea and green tea ice cream are included in the meal. The ice cream is a refreshing finish. One caveat: This restaurant fills up at lunch time during the week. So bide your time. read more

Merp. I wish I liked my food more. I grew up in Sunnyvale and only finally made a visit here. Upon entering the restaurant, I was pleased to see the traditional interior. The place is also surprisingly huge! Despite it being a Friday night however, there were only a few occupied tables. Maybe I should have taken that as a sign. I ordered the chirashi bowl and my BF got a baked roll (unfortunately I can't remember what it was). What I do remember was that I was very underwhelmed with my chirashi bowl. For the price, I expected more fish, rather than just two thinly sliced pieces of 3 types of fish. Just based off of this and the fact that my BF also wasn't impressed with his roll, I don't think we'll be coming back here for sushi. But then the ownership changed and the place went downhill. The second location closed, and this first location went downhill fast. Disappointedly, food was bad and service was even worse. Old waitress did not have table ready but had already put us with uncleared table. She cleaned our table in front of us after we sit. During the whole dinner, she would only checked on other tables whom are in different race other than Asian (although she is Asian herself) around our table. I felt discriminated and the whole time she did not even come to check on us or to refill hot tea. The price is way too high for the meal or entree from this place. Great service and everything, I just wasn't a big fan of the food. I got the bento lunch special with california roll and beef teriyaki. It came with miso soup, salad, and rice. For $11. The california roll tasted fishy. Not good. The salad had a very strange dressing on it, like a super onion-y, chunky mayonnaise. Also not good. The beef was good but I wish it came with more than 4 pieces. The miso soup was good. They also served green tea ice cream at the end which was great. I've been dining here since I was a kid, and I'll have to agree with Tim L: the food has been somewhat inconsistent over the years. However, my parents (who spent almost a decade in Japan) deem Seto as their favorite place to go for fresh fish in the South Bay. My personal favorite is Kitsho, but Seto is my fallback. The quality of fish here is usually quite good and fresh. This is saying a lot, because I will have to admit that I am quite the sushi snob! Last night, I ordered amaebi, 2 orders of hamachi, tobiko with quail egg, and saba... which I was very much pleased with! The fried amaebi heads also came in a bowl with a little ponzu sauce, which was unique and I really enjoyed. Aside from sushi, they also have a decent selection of interesting small plates (izakaya style), such as beef tongue, smelt tempura, fried tofu, and grilled squid. Their small plates menu is not as extensive as izakaya restaurants like Tanto, but it's great to be able to go to a sushi place and have the option of getting some tapas as well. We had the smelt tempura last night, and everyone really enjoyed it. Their "Seto Deluxe Dinner for 3" is also a looooooot of food. I'll be honest. If I hadn't seen Seto in a Yelp review by South Bay sushi connoisseur, Carol L., I'd have never come across it. I'm not really familiar with this part of Sunnyvale, but given it was between work and home, it was a convenient place to stop. Upon arrival, I found a spacious parking lot and a large sign for Seto Restaurant. Confusingly, there are actually two buildings. The building near the parking lot is not the restaurant and, from what I could tell, has no entrance of any sort or connection to the other building. Perhaps it's a storage area or private room? You must walk around the buildings and will find the main entrance facing the street. Once I found my way inside, I was actually impressed by how large and relatively nice the place was. It was empty at the early dinner hour and I took a seat at the sushi bar. Service was polite and I browsed the menu I was handed. As I looked at all the items offered, I began to like the place even more. While sushi and sashimi are a focus, Seto also offers an impressive variety of soba/udon options, donburi choices, and many small plates. I love sushi, but I also like being able to order non-sushi dishes on occasion to mix it up. This time though, I stuck with the chef's sushi platter ($32). Disappointed by some chef's choices at other restaurants, I asked if the platter included my favorite toro and amaebi. Happily, it did and I proceeded to leave the rest up to the chef. The platter was out within minutes and it was among the better selections I've seen for a "starter" chef's choice platter. Besides the aforementioned toro and amaebi, there was uni, ika, hamachi, ikura, maguro, and sake. Really, you can't complain about those choices. As for the quality, I'd consider it fair. The toro wasn't as glistening white as I've had elsewhere and the amaebi was smaller than others. Overall, the pieces were all "bite-sized," vs. the gargantuan trend at many sushi roll places. My one complaint is I found most of the sushi lukewarm in temperature. I prefer my sushi to be a bit colder and only the rice (or cooked items) to be warm. I look forward to returning soon and trying their combination dinners with both sushi and traditional Japanese items. Now that I know the sushi is fine, I can explore the other items more, particularly the soba. P.S. Seto happily accepts American Express. Oh boy, where do I start? This is definitively the worst sushi I have ever had the displeasure of eating in my entire life. I live right down the street, so I was really excited that I had a sushi restaurant to visit, but now I'm disappointed that it is taking real estate from another possible eatery. The fish was old and dried out. They have precut fish which is prone to get old and gross quickly, and it definitely did just that! The rice was also dry as was the seaweed. It tasted like sushi from the airport that someone had left out for a couple of days and then tried to pass off as premium sushi. Their prices were also out of this world expensive. $20/plate for 7 pieces of sushi and a tiny tuna roll. Needless to say, I would never return here. I did mention to them that the food was not fresh (the fish was so tough I couldn't chew through one piece and it had TONS of scales on it..) and they did nothing to remedy the experience. Came here for lunch with the co-workers. First off, I expect fast service knowing majority are in for lunch.. We got served after 3 parties that came in AFTER us. I had to ask twice to get someone to take our order. Two of us order brown rice which they advertised that we can substitute with white rice. After 30 minutes we got our order with white rice... they took another 5 minutes to provide the brown rice after giving us an attitude. Our waitress was never to be found after she took our order.... The special for hamachi belly is a joke. Not fresh and for $7.50 I got two pieces smaller than nigiri which one of us got.... The STEAK teriyaki I got was overcooked, and tasted like wood. Oh the table next to us wanted light soy sauce, the waitress didn't bother asking and took it from our table while we were using it. Seriously? An update - seems that service and food is even worse now that it was an year ago. We got here at 11:15 (store has posted an opening time of 11am) and the front doors were locked. We knocked, waited for a bit and then was turning to leave when someone unlocked the door and seated us...and then disappeared for 15 mins.Waitress showed up at 11:30 am to take our order. Why post an opening time of 11am, if you're not actually taking orders until 11:30? Ordered the Chirashi sushi while fiance ordered a bento box. She wanted brown rice, but remembered from previous experience that brown rice takes an additional 20 mins or so, so she got white rice instead. When the food arrived, the Chirashi looked pitifully for the $16 or $17 they charge in terms of both quality and quantity. Salad that came with fiance's bento box had more salad dressing then lettuce...so she ended up not eating that. Her tempura batter was thick..more like a corn dog thickness batter rather than what you would expect from a good Japanese place. Portion of the Katsu was teeny. Majority of the bento box was taken up by white rice. Really disappointing bento box compared to what other local Japanese restaurants provide. After we were done, it took a long time to flag someone down to give us our check....and then we wasted more time trying to flag someone down to take our payment. Eventually got fed up of waiting and walked my check/payment to the older lady in the back. Not coming back. Here's the bullet points from my previous review of this place: 1) Ordering brown rice to your order will mean waiting an extra 15-30 mins for your dish to come out. Not making up those numbers, but that's what the waitresses have told me on numerous occasions. 2) Service is slow. I've stood at the entrance for a couple of minutes on some occasions waiting to be greeted and seated. Two waitresses walked by me, but not a word was said and no eye contact made. Water/Tea will rarely get refilled. Takes forever to flag down someone for a check. The list could go on. 3) The bento lunch specials taste ok, but the portion size is not proportional to the cost. For example if you order the grilled mackerel you get tiny pieces of mackerel. If you buy grilled mackerel from say mitsuwa market, you get 2 slightly larger pieces for $2.50-$3 that tastes just as good. read more

Seto makes the best tempura I've ever had, period. I ate there just last night, ordering the Tempura Shrimp. As always, it was terrific. They really have this down to an art. I have also eaten there many times in the past - usually I order sashimi, sushi, and it's always been stellar. A few times I've tried the mushroom miso soups - again, jewels. I've brought my sweetie, my friends, and my family to Seto, and all were extremely happy. My father particularly enjoyed the tempura he ordered. I enjoy sitting at the bar to watch the amazing food get prepared. The service? Well, what can I say, maybe I'm special, at least, that's how I'm treated there. I know they're busy because that's what it's like to run an excellent restaurant, and yet they do a great job anyway. The sushi chef works quickly and efficiently, but I can get his attention easily if I'd like to order something. They'll also do off-menu orders. I brought in some yuzu fruit last year, and they made the MOST AMAZING Suzuki fish preparations - one was cooked, the other, sashimi, all with the yuzu I brought in. The sauce on the cooked suzuki was spectacular - Michelin style spectacular - and the combination of the fresh fresh sashimi slices and the yuzu peel and juice was delectable. Back to reality: On Monday they apparently run a bento box lunch special (I've had their bento box many times, and I enjoy those too) so it packs the place. Delightful Japanese place with fresh sushi and tasty bento box meals served with attentive and helpful service. The restaurant may not look like much outside, but good food inside. The toro (tuna belly) sushi ($14 for 2 pieces) was some of the best I've ever had - was so sweet and tender and felt like it melted in my mouth like butter. The crazy roll (a combo of several fishes) was good and the pieces of fish were very fresh, but I think some of the unique flavors of the different fish were lost by squishing them into one roll. The chicken teriyaki came with plump pieces of chicken with flavorful teriyaki sauce and I was very pleased with it. The rest of the soup, rice, salad, and even the small green beans all seemed freshly made and were tasty. Service was also very attentive, helpful, and responsive. A really nice older Japanese man served us with a smile and gave us some good recommendations. He noticed a small speck of food on one of our new plates and went to clean it. Ice water came quickly when I asked for it. Bottom line: overall tasty and enjoyable Japanese food experience highlighted by good service. Lots of Japanese clientele is a good sign. As soon as you are seated, servers will bring out complimentary miso soup and hot tea. It's great because other places will charge at least $1.50 for one or the other. I ordered the sushi special when I came for lunch and the fish on the nigiri tasted very fresh. I asked if I was able to switch the spicy tuna/cali rolls for just salmon maki but waitress said no, but it's no problem. I'm just really picky with how my spicy tuna taste like but since I can't switch it out, I didn't mind trying it. I also ordered hamachi maki and the hamachi also tasted very fresh! The spicy tuna was just to my liking so I was not disappoint with my decision! Just the sushi special alone filled me up so that's great. TBH, the two waitresses who were younger than the older ladies didn't provide a GREAT service, they just don't smile or happy about their job...but the young guy with glasses then came in and asked if my tea needed refills etc. He then proceeded to ask me and my brother if we wanted green tea ice cream after giving us the bill. Some colleagues and I came to Seto for a Monday afternoon birthday lunch. We were immediately seated in the private Japanese style table (the ones where you take off your shoes). Everyone ordered a bento, and I did the sushi lunch. It came with 6 variations of nigiri and some California rolls. I'm not big on California rolls so I don't have much to say about that. Fish on nigiri was pretty fresh, which surprised me. What stood out the most were the attentive staff members. It is pretty apparent that customer service is one of their high priorities. One of the staff members overheard us talking about the birthday lunch and gave each one of us complimentary green tea ice cream. The birthday person even got a candle on top! A but underwhelmed... I had not been to Seto's in a while and had a business lunch there today. Honestly I remembered it to be much higher quality food, great presentation, good service and was a bit underwhelmed with the experience today. Ordered the sushi platter and the quality and portions of the sashimi used was not the same I remembered it to be. The service was OK, we had to keep asking for water and green tean, even though the resturant was not full or busy when we got there (11:30AM). Couldn't figure out where to have sushi one evening last week. My friend quickly suggested a japanese restaurant not too far from my place. I passed by Seto restaurant many times, mostly because I spend a lot of my lunch time at Gombei Bento. From the outside, Seto looks like a run-down restaurant that mainly serves the American style of japanese food. Guess what guys? Japanese usually don't order Teriyaki beef and california roll! Look is definitely deceiving and I apologize I think Seto isn't an authentic japanese restaurant. Turns out they are more authentic than many japanese restaurant in sunnyvale. We were seated at the table and offered the menu. We didn't know what to order because the menu is thick and filled with numerous option. We quickly turned to the board behind the sushi bar and found out they have fish from Tsukiji fish market! That immediately caught my attention. Lets walk down the memory lane from my Japan trip in last December! Turns out this restaurant offer fish from Tsukiji fish market and also fish from other part of the world. We had the Tsukiji sashimi platter with 8 kinds of fish in it. tempura appetizer, Chawa-mushi, chazuke and some sake. Overall the fish was very fresh, it did remind me about japan! read more

Interestingly enough but been coming here for many years but finally got a chance to take some decent photos for a review. For as long as I have remembered, I have ordered the Seto Chirashi, which is mixed sashimi over a bed of rice. Seto Chirashi, named after the establishment and comes in a really beautiful double-tiered lacquerware, is basically a step-up from the regular chirashi. For the price paid $20.50, it's a pretty good deal considering the amount of sashimi and other stuff that come with it. Their lunch bento is also very reasonable. The tempura is prepared well without the heavy breading expected from other less-authentic Japanese restaurants. All in all, nice place and good value. read more

Honestly, I never sit down at Seto. But I always order from this restaurant from Door Dash. I love their Chirashi. The portion is generous and the price is really reasonable for lunch Chirashi. 20 dollars with generous amount of sashimi. We love to go there whenever we crave for sashimi. This place always has the best service, and fresh sashimi around. And if sashimi is not your liking, their cooked dishes are just as delicious. We especially love their soft-shelled crab which always cook to perfection. We always look forward to our next visit!
