I have been going to Senor Tomas for 20+ years. The food is fabulous, and the waitstaff is always friendly and attentive. There are many dining options in the area, and I have recommended Senor Tomas to many friends over the years. Last night I had an unpleasant experience. I am a (somewhat) senior citizen at 67, and my GF recommended a few alternate places, but it was such a beautiful evening that I recommended that we go to ST and dine on the patio. We walked onto the patio and stood waiting to be seated. My GF has a problem with her foot, and standing and walking can be painful. I asked the waitress/hostess if we could please be seated. She said that someone would seat us. There were 12 or 14 tables and only 2 had people seated at them. We stood there waiting for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, and I finally decided to just seat ourselves (even if temporarily) at a small table with 2 chairs. After a few minutes, the Manager abruptly charged out of the restaurant door to our table with a very angry look on his face. He did not greet us, but instead said "Do NOT seat yourselves, if you do, you run the risk not being noticed or served at all". I corrected him and told him politely in a calm voice that we HAD asked to be seated, but were not, so we sat down. He did not apologize, but left if a huff. I guess the customer is NOT always right. I noticed that the Manager thanked other tables as they left, but he ignored us (fine) We completed our (great) meal, drinks and desert. The bill was over $100, and we tipped generously. Maybe the Manager was having a bad day, but he should not take it out on his customers. I am not sure if we will return to what was one of our favorite local restaurants. read more

The salsa tastes like Ortega smooth taco sauce from the grocery store. Chips were stale. Did not bring water to the table and it took about ten minutes to get our beverages so you're eating chips and salsa but have nothing to wash it down with. When we finally got our beverages, the server forgot the straws so we waited several more minutes for that. When our food arrived, we still had not received the appetizer we ordered. When I asked about it, I got a blank stare. Finally received the appetizer well into our meal. I asked for extra napkins. Was finally given one along with an extra set of silverware with a napkin around it and the server mumbled something about that being all they had. Watch out when you get your bill They show a cash price and a credit card price. Then they show suggested tip amounts of 20%, 25% and 30% and it's based on the credit card total, not cash total which is pretty shady if you ask me as it indicates not only do they want to charge you an extra percentage to use your card but they want you to top on that extra percentage too. Definitely will not be returning. We were so looking forward to trying a new place and ended up being very disappointed. read more

The food is great, and the prices are very good, but what I really like about Senior Thomas is that it's decorated with lots of examples of the owner's artwork. He gives it a very cool vibe. When you walk in, you are hit with a very heavy candle scent. Food was just okay and priced higher than many other local Mexican restaurants. Service was almost not existent until food was served. For example, soda glasses empty and small chips gone for a table of 5, no one came by to refill. Don't think we will be returning. Better options in the area. read more

I am not able to comment on the food or atmosphere because the gentleman on the phone never gave me the opportunity to have lunch/dinner. I called prior to walking in to see if they are familiar with gluten allergies. He told me he doesn't have any allergies. I said OK let me rephrase this. "Do you know how to prepare food for somebody who has gluten allergies" and he responded back with "well next time ask the right questions because that is not what you asked me". Warning always double check your bill they will add money on! We only saw the person to take our order he was rude and acted as though we were wasting his time. After waiting almost 40 min for our food I had to tell them we were unable to stay and eat. That we need our meals Togo. When the owner came back to the table I gave him my cc right away and when he returned I knew something was wrong with my bill as soon as I saw the amount for almost $100. We ordered 3meals (2 @$17 & 1 @ $20) a bowl of soup @ $6, and 3 drink (1 soda and 2 lemonades) NO ALCOHOL. I asked to se an itemized receipt that is when I notice the owner added 20% gratuity for himself. Son and his friends went and the service was terrible, they felt ignored, were over charged, and then had a 20% gratuity added to their bill without being told. Disappointing and we will not go back. This is not a way to run a business. read more

The food was very bland. Not as tasty as in the past. I have been going here for years and was very disappointed with the texture and taste of the chicken chimichangas. Our server was great. My tacos de Cameron tropical were good, as was the rice & beans side added to it. Definitely pricey for Mexican as the added rice beans is an up charge. My husband ordered Gaucho Fish with chimichurri sauce. Total disappointment, sadly. Mahi mahi was so thin, basically indistinguishable as real mahi mahi. Fish was dry, overcooked, side of roasted potatoes minimal and lacking. Sorry when he had to eat the sad Latin bread just to fill his appetite. came there today for lunch with 16 people and wanted to sit together outside. they refused to allow us to move the tables together to accommodate us even though there was no interference with the umbrellas. They were just basically rude and lazy. We ended up at 3 tables. The host was an older guy and multiple people made comments to me about his performance. Updated because service has been dreadful lately. It's fine if you're busy but when you walk in no one will acknowledge you. Food was good, fresh, and hot. The service was SLOW and inattentive. We had to flag down the waiter to get refills after waiting nearly 5 minutes. Now mind you, there were only 3 other parties in the restaurant. Then, when the bill came, there was an item on the bill for 20% gratuity on our party of 3. This is by far my favorite restaurant in the area. The Latin cuisine is authentic and delicious and it's difficult to pick a favorite dish. I've never had a disappointing meal here. First of all, we are a Mexican family and I can assure you that this is NOT authentic Mexican food. It's not even a good rendition of Americanized Mexican or TexMex cuisine. Maybe it's a Guatemalan or Nicaraguan take on Mexican, but it's definitely not authentic Mexican. Second, the food was uninspiring, ridiculously overpriced, AND served in extremely small portions. I ordered a "bowl" of Tortilla soup for $9.50. It was served in an extremely shallow bowl and I estimate there was between 1/4 and 1/3 cup of soup in the bowl. Unless I was told, I would never have guessed it was Tortilla soup. It was a strange spicy, creamy, tomato base with about 1 Tbsp of shredded chicken mixed in and a bagged tortilla strip salad toppings. Third, the ambiance and service were both awful. None of the staff members were friendly. None. Our waiter took forever to come to our table and I don't think he said more than 2 words. Instead, he pointed, handed, grabbed, and walked away. Language wasn't a barrier... we are natively fluent in both Spanish and English. One of the things we enjoy most about Mexican restaurants in the ambiance... they are generally happy, lively, and welcoming establishments. This place was quite the opposite... I don't think anyone enjoys working there... and it shows! We have several favorite Mexican restaurants in Waukesha, Pewaukee, Madison, and Milwaukee. Unfortunately, our visit to Senor Tomas was a first and last and we won't be adding it to our list of favorites. read more

The food was very good but the service was horrible. We had to go find someone to seat us. Then, we were basically ignored by the staff for over a half an hour. They all just walked right past us. No drinks or even water. Then, when they finally got someone to take our order, they never brought the appetizer we ordered, and no drink refills. They were moderately busy but definitely not slammed or anything. It looked like they had plenty of staff, too. Our group of 9 unanimously agree to never stop here again. From the sour puss faces to the put-out attitude - never felt like we were welcome. Rather an inconvenience! It was a beautiful day so we asked to sit out on their nice outdoor patio. No! Sorry! We don't serve out there - no umbrellas and no servers!!! Would not take an ala-carte order! One fork (no knife) in a cheap napkin. No condiments on the tables. Had to ask for everything. They blamed everything on being understaffed. And each time we asked we got the sour puss again! Now the food - well the chips were stale, the guacamole salty and the salsa was watery with no taste. Most plates were lacking in flavor. The Bill! No itemization! Just a total with tip included (no indication of what the tip was either)! The only thing going for this place is it's location in the small downtown of Hartland. Service is terrible and food is average at best. Sat down with 2 friends. My one friend and I ordered food and drinks, and the other just drinks. At the end they charged a 10$ service fee because my one friend didn't order a meal. When we asked the server about it she was extremely rude and unprofessional about the situation. Walked in. Someone behind the bar saw us. Ignored. They have the sign, "Please wait to be seated". We stood there awkwardly till the same guy spook to us. We saw it is a 3-star restaurant. We thought it is ok. We have been to many 3-star restaurants and have got the best services and food. This restaurant really defines 3-star restaurant. They have good food with horrible service. Before we dined here we were looking at the menu and noticed that this Resturant didn't have great reviews. I'm not sure why because this is one of the best restaurants around. Homemade, authentic, delicious. I recently had dinner with my good friend and daughter. We started with nachos and guacamole. I enjoyed a golden margarita. Both were delicious and flavorful. I ordered chiles rellenos con camaron it was delicious. Green chili stuffed with cheese and six large tender shrimp. Chorizo, rice with lots of Chris's tender vegetables, topped with a nice sauce. Everytime I get a different dish it's my new favorite. The next day I made eggs to go with the leftovers and I got two meals out of my dinner. Every shrimp dish I've ordered here they are nice large perfectly cooked. My friend ordered Arroz con Pollo that is her go to dish and she always enjoys it. My daughter doesn't like any heat and she ordered Forest chicken. She really enjoyed her meal a lot. It had a good flavor without a lot of heat. Our server did a great job. read more

Went in with a group of 9. Never have been to an establishment that charges full price for a VIRGIN margarita. When asking the owner about it, his response was that their reasoning was because "they like to get people to drink a regular margarita"?????? Whatever the hell that means. IM PREGNANT. So not sure what the hell is going through their minds pricing a drink based on the incentive to get people to drink alcohol, but last time I checked, pricing is for the tequila, not for the ice and flavored syrup they're using! Completely mind blown by this establishment and their lack of understanding of how the industry works. My husband was also sick after having their regular margarita or could have been their food, either way, we will never be back. Complete waste of money on below average Mexican food. Hadn't been here in awhile, so decided to give it a try again. Went early on a Friday night, there were only a couple of tables in the restaurant. Hostess was very nice and we were sat right away. The waiter, Jose, needs to find another job. Came over 5 minutes after we were sat and mumbled something about drinks. Took awhile for the drinks to come, then mumbled about taking our order. Seemed very annoyed to be there. My husband asked if they had a habanero sauce and he said "no" like it was a stupid question to ask of a Mexican restaurant. Never checked on us after the food was served. We paid with a credit card, but always leave a cash tip. He came and took the credit card receipt right away, and then came back and said "No tip?!" Terrible experience! I called in a carry-out and the individual who answered the phone was unprofessional, rude, poor customer service, and became a real jerk during the whole experience. After I placed my order I waited for 55 minutes. When I was ready to get my order I pulled into the 4th parking space outside the restaurant because the other spaces were taken. I was in front of the restaurant as I called the restaurant for them to bring out my food and this individual refused to bring it out because in his mind I needed to be in one of the other 3 parking spaces for him to come outside. From my view, there were already vehicles parked in those spaces and I explained this to him. I also told him to please not be so difficult and just bring my food out, which I had already paid for. He did not respond to me and hung up. I waited about 5-10 minutes and then took off. Then, he called me 10 minutes later and started yelling at me that the food was already made and I would be charged. He was a tall bald guy with glasses, a real jerk who shouldn't be left in charge of the restaurant. I have dined there before and the owners who have waited on me several times have always been excellent. Dude, if you have to defend your poor actions/service with such a long, false explanation, then you have some real problems. A customer should never have to put up with such poor treatment. I start every Mexican meal by convincing myself I'm going to go easy on the chips and salsa. Before long, I'm a few baskets deep in fried tortillas and awaiting a meal I don't have room for. Our experience at Senor Tomas' was no exception. My husband and I entered and were seated in a warm, cozy, back corner, filled with colorful wall art, sculptures, and a hand carved table. It was sort of like dinner and a show. It might be a good place for a first date because it could easily spark conversion if things got awkward. [Enter basket of chips #1] We noshed on chips and salsa as we browsed the menu and my favorite fella sipped his margarita. The salsa was a good dipping consistency and tasted like a slightly spicy bloody Mary. There was a really nice selection of seafood and authentic options that I've never run across at Chipotle. We ordered the guacamole to start, along with Chimichangas and Spinachas. [Enter basket of chips #2] The guacamole was thick, flavorful, and came with a couple of fried plantains to mix things up. We considered ordering some of the house made cornbread, which I rarely see on menus, but I'm a sucker good guac. [Enter basket of chips #3. Exit all willpower] Entrées arrived at a leisurely pace, but I appreciated the extra time to make sure I was good and full before my food arrived. My husband described his steak Chimichangas as flavorful and comforting. It was definitely a step up from the standard ground beef variety. They came with refried beans and Spanish rice, so it was quite a meal. My Spinachas (chicken enchiladas smothered in wilted spinach, tomato sauce, and goat cheese crema) were a really unique take on a common dish. The goat cheese added a nice tang that complimented the tomato sauce. My only real complaint was that the black beans and rice on the side were too close to room temperature for my taste. While we enjoyed ourselves, I will warn future diners that this isn't a place to get a quick bite. The service allows for a quick siesta between dishes and the check. It was immediately clear to us that this was a family run operation, so quality of service comes second to giving Grandpa a job. Fortunately, keeping things all in the family gives this place the gift of old school, unique dishes. We'll be visiting Senor Tomas again with certainty. Perhaps next time, I'll exercise some restraint and save room for dessert! read more

It was ok for me. The food is your basic Mexican and was tasty but not knock you socks off good. The service is where they could definitely improve~ our waiter was brusque to say the least, bordering on rude. It wasn't like they were super busy that he would need to be that way either we were one of maybe 5 occupied tables. Not sure if we will be back due to the rude service, but maybe over the summer we will try again, it looks like they have a nice outdoor dining space. Also if you order arroz con pollo get it without the black olives, unless you love black olives -as I think there were more olives then chicken in my dish! Idk don't know if it's poor management or an extreme staff shortage but this place has lost it's something special. We along with many others were trying to dine on Saturday night at 6:45. There were 3 very busy servers flying by. We were seated by the gentleman at the door and given chips and salsa. Also asked for water. He was rushed but pleasant. He told us the server would be with us soon. After 20 mins, another table stopped a waitress and said they'd be waiting 25 mins. There order finally taken. Others who arrived after us ordered before us. There seems to be no direction for the staff to follow. No one to help the newer staff! Besides that the outside was open causing more issues with orders and increasing the workload. It's not the wait as much as it is no one addresses the situation at the door. Before being seated perhaps tell the guests there will be a delay due to staff shortage. Perhaps automatically get water with the chips and salsa. Perhaps train the guys at the front to provide soft drinks and refills. DO NOT ignore the guests! Avoiding eye contact IS ignoring. Another thought is why open the outdoor area if you're short and can't keep the orders flowing. Many poor choices. Bad for business I'm afraid. I'm sorry for the servers. Truly sorry! read more

Just saw the three star average rating. That's a complete mystery to me! Been there twice in the last 10 months and the food and service was so good we're doing the 40 minute drive again tomorro.w. Apps are unusual compared to most Mexican places and it pays off with surprising new flavors We inadvertently hit the Margarita special both times and had to pick a couple designated drivers each time! Lots of leftovers was like getting an extra couple dinners at no extra charge too. We are older, so early, dinner eaters and it made for unstressed service with less diners.
