So we checked in via yelp but 4:45pm with a estimated 60-75 mins wait so we walk around the mall then 20mins later we get a text to check in before 6:45pm so we went back around 5:40pm then waited almost 2 hours, then I come to find out they don't follow the line order on yelp it's whenever you physically check in with them. Our party was looking for an AYCE place near Waikiki that was not too expensive for those in our party, so most of the $35+ places were out of question for choice. We ended up finding Shabuya, in the Ala Moana mall. The weekend pricing is $30/person. We put ourselves on the Yelp waitlist while we drove over with an eta of ~51-71 minutes to be seated. We came in around 45 minutes after joining the waitlist, but had just gotten a text that we were taken off the waitlist for not showing up. The greeter was able to quickly add us back on after I shared that we were just on our way, had called the restaurant but no one picked up, and that the rest of our party was finding parking in a busy parking lot. The place was PACKED and BUSSING. You get 90 minutes with an open salad/toppings bar, a 4 plate appetizer limit and a 8 meat plate limit. Each person on the table has their own mini individual hot pot. There was a good few selections for broth. The food was standard shabu shabu, some items that stuck out to me was the variety of choices available, along with some interesting ones like quail eggs and wagyu meat. For $30 AYCE shabu shabu? Worth it for being stuffed and done with food for the rest of the day. The value itself was worth 5/5 for us along with great service and great atmosphere. Luckily, we joined the waitlist on Yelp while driving there so we were on spot #2 out of 40-something groups! After checking in, we still had to wait about 30 minutes until we were finally seated. But the hot pot is always awesome. Plenty of choices of meats and sides, plenty of vegetables and extra noodles. Prices are reasonable, and my wife and I really enjoyed our last time dining here. Honestly the worst part about this place is how messy customers are, making a mess of the buffet area with the sauces and whatnot. But that's not really the restaurant's problem. Dinner and weekends are $29.99 per person all you can eat. The only difference between the two is that dinner includes crab and more cuts of beef. I must have eaten here thirty or more times. It was great every time. I get either the house or tonkotsu broth. Once in awhile, I'll get the sukiyaki. All of the food items are clean and fresh. Seafood is my favorite protein, so naturally I'll get a full plate of shrimp, clams and mussels. I'l also get a mountain full of crab if I'm doing dinner or the weekend. I'll get all the different varieties of beef and pork belly. They also have a huge variety of noodles and veggies. I'll get bok choy, rice noodles, rice cake and gyoza. The slices of beef are really thin. I'll dump the whole plate of beef in and swish it around for 20 seconds and it''s done. I see some people putting the beef in and just leaving it in there for minutes. It's way overcooked by then. The sauces are yummy. I get the goma (sesame), yuzu ponzu and Asian chili (my fave). While we don't go to the Ala Moana mall that often, every time we've been this place always has people waiting outside. I'm off work this week so decided a weekday lunch would likely be less people than a weekend lunch and decided to give it a try. I also wanted to prevent waiting so we got to the restaurant 15 minutes before they opened and still had 6 parties ahead of us! They opened on time and we were seated right away. The server gave us a brief synopsis of how it works. Pick from 1 of 5 broths, any pupu's (they offer 4 at lunch), and we put in our meat order. For lunch they offer two beef, two pork and 1 chicken cut. We got both beef and both pork. We got the tonkotsu broth and spicy miso and for pupu's we ordered gyoza and chicken karage. The server told us there is a 90 minute limit and if you don't eat all your food your charged $6 for wasting. Honestly I was perfectly fine with that. There is typically a lot of food wasted at buffett's. Also makes people more conscious of what they take. We received the broths, meat and pupu's in about 3 minutes. We took turns going to the buffet to get our veggies, seafood and sauces. On the seafood side of the buffet there were various kinds of uncooked noodles and rice cakes. Next to that are various seafood items including shrimp balls, lobster balls, swai fillets, clams, mussels and head on shrimp. Lots of selection of veggies which I loved! Several different types of cabbage (white, Napa, bok choy, etc), onions, carrots, spinach, radish, bean sprouts, variety of mushrooms, edamame and kimchi plus a few items I'm forgetting. Last up were the sauces. They had ponzu, miso, spicy chili oil, cilantro, green onions, jalapeños, crushed garlic and crushed radish. I got a mixture of most of the veggies and seafood and several sauces. I dumped everything into the boiling tonkatsu sauce, except the meat. Rookie mistake on my part but lesson learned! Should have done veggies, noodles then seafood because it all cooks differently. Ok, so my critique on the food. My boyfriend's spicy miso broth had a lot more flavor than my tonkatsu. My tonkatsu was kind of bland. Next time I'm getting the spicy miso! Since the broth didn't have a lot of flavor the food didn't have too much flavor. I will say the beef was delicious! It cooked in the broth in about 5 seconds and was so good. I made some good sauce mixes which helped but next time I'll take some of the sauces and mix them in the broth to give it more flavor. I liked the noodles because you could mix everything up and decide if you want a soup type meal or dry noodles. I do wish they refilled the broth as it got low towards the end. The gyoza were good but they also had frozen gyoza on the buffet you could add to your broth. The chicken karage was so good we got two orders. The server was really attentive at the beginning but once we got our food he was hard to track down. My boyfriend joked that's how they save money by not coming back so you can't order more meat and pupu's. Ha! All in all we had a good time. We would give this place a zero. We made reservations online. Get there and they wanted to seat us at the bar. That was not going to work. My hsb told them it was a party of 2 but only 1 eating. The other person is disabled and on a restricted diet. Manager Christian told us that we'd have to pay per person regardless of being disabled or handicap. There were five of us . So one friend paid for her own meal using her credit card. Another friend used her card to pay for the rest of us which would have been for 4 meals. We left the restaurant my friend who paid the 4 meals forgot to leave the tip so she went back feeling bad she forgot still not knowing tip was already charged on the bill. I love shabuya and will go almost every week if I wanted to but this time something was off. It was Labor Day and I called to see if there hours were adjusted but no one answered, I called about 10 times in a 2 hour span because the calls were going through but no answer. I noticed the waitlist was open, so I would hope they were open, decided to take a chance and make my way there and they were open! I checked in and tried to call the place as I was waiting for a table outside the restaurant and saw 3 staff members in front of the phone as it was ringing, that seemed off to me and a bit rube, I assume they're too busy or were advised to not answer calls. As I got seated, and we started our order, 2 of the burners was not working on the side of the table I was sitting on and they decided to put my bowl at the end of the table burner which was a bit far where I was sitting, they're usually good at offering the butane burner in this situation but that seemed off as well, the butane burner ran out of gas pretty quickly as well so I had to wait for a bit. Lastly the Air conditioning was not working and they did have huge industrial fans around but how ever they did have to move it around to accommodate other customers, so our table got really hot along with the other tables around us that were complaining about the heat. This did make the experience not to enjoyable like how we usually would, it got to hot to where we couldn't finish our food and paid the tab early to leave, I believe we only dined in for about an hour. I would still got back, nothing negative about the food but the service from the phone calls to the air conditioning was not great, I wanna be understanding cause the workers have to be in that heat too but I've never had an experience like this before from shabuya, hopefully they can get the a.c fixed. read more
