The only thing I didn't like is our seating was just dark. You would think there'd be lights, but the waitress basically told us "no lights". The vibe was cool, a little dark and moody with loud music but not so loud that you couldn't semi-yell a good conversation across a table. Shadow RX (Blended Scotch, Teeling Blackpitts, Ginger, Honey, Lemon, Soda) and Bullet Train Old Fashioned (Rye, Shiso Liqueur, Sugar Cube, Lime Bitters, Peychaud's Bitters, Japanese Plum Candy) were both good drinks. That being said, bartenders are not consistent as my first Shadow RX (heavily citrus, crafted by a long-haired woman) was very different from my second (more balanced and decidedly more delicious, crafted by a short-haired guy). I am shocked this place is only 3 1/2 stars. There was only a couple servers for the whole restaurant but they worked hard running around trying to make everyone happy. Our appetizer also came out the same time as our meal, but Those are the only things I could think would dock their score. The food: EXCELLENT! I'm actually surprised how good it is. I've had the vegetarian mushroom poutine multiple times and it is always a pleaser. I'm not even a big mushroom person but I'll order this every time. So creamy, cheesy and delicious. My dad got the wedge and voted it one of the best he's ever had, and he is no wedge salad novice. I got the vegan burger and besides it being super messy and falls apart it is a 10/10. Went here last week for brunch with the girls. We all loved it & all look forward to going back for brunch again, lunch & happy hour. I'm going to bring hubby next time. Lots of yummy things to tempt you on the menu. I went with the breakfast burrito subbing bacon for sausage. Clarified that the potatoes were served outside the burrito. Unfortunately the beans & rice were also served outside the burrito. I put them in myself. Menu lists avocado & received guacamole instead which was actually better for me. Had to get some extra salsa as not enough was on it. One friend got the basic benedict & it looked great. Came with breakfast potatoes & a little salad. I'd be interested in trying one of their other benedicts. Our other friend got the Spam breakfast sliders. They looked good but I don't think I would order them myself. The bloody marys are Spicy!!! You may need a little extra tomato juice on the side like we did. Great atmosphere. Service was a little slow even though it didn't seem very busy. Street parking can be hard to find. read more

Went in last night and the bartender named Daniel poured a drink with fruit flies in it. Then when I called him out on it he got upset, cut me off and told me who cares if there are flies in the liquor. His lack of pride in his job was appalling. Any bartender worth being an employee would cap the pour spouts on the liquor bottles and not get upset with the customer for calling them out on bugs being in the drinks. Horrible service. Great late night happy hour. Drinks and food was way cheap. My nephew did the jalapeno mac and cheese and was super tasty. I did the steak & frites and got a solid piece of meat that was cooked to perfection. We did some breaded pickle chips and while they were tasty, the saltiness of them was just too much. And this is from someone who licked his bloody Mary glass clean earlier in the day. The back-up DJ who was spinning that night played a solid mix of tunes with everything from Johnny Thunders, the haunting version of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by the Chromatics, Lorreta Lynn and some dude named Roman GianArthur. I'm pretty sure the waitress with the white hair is not feeling serving black people. I sat outside and she made it pretty clear that she was not interested in serving me. This is one of the only bars in the junction with outdoor seating so I was immediately draw to it with the beautiful sun. I will not make that mistake again. I can say the male bartender and the female bar tender that were working were delightful. To the white haired (or platinum blonde) waitress take note you live in Seattle and it's hard to avoid "my" people. Treat people how you want to be treated and try to pretend like that all money is green and you are trying to make some of it. The lights are so trippy and I was so ready to ride the high of a West Seattle restaurant being open past 10PM. We walked in and were greeted with a smell that could only be described as a combination between two day old baguettes and a McDonald's play pen. It's kinda of abrasive but you get used to it as long as you don't look at the bathroom. Our waitress was incredibly kind and commented on my partner's cologne. She said we smelled "incredibly good" and that comment made me feel more confident than a 19 year old just inducted into the douchiest frat on campus. The food was what I would describe as if JCPenney had food. Not overpriced, in fact, almost exactly the value you pay for. Take with that what you will. Will probably come back, but it won't be for the best night on the town, more like when you're friends are over and you want to show them West Seattle has culture when, really, it doesn't. Ehh this place is ok. After tons of people recommending it to us, my boyfriend and I tried it out. We were seated at a table and it seemed like we were supposed to order with a "waiter" but after 20 min the guy never came back around, so we walked up to the bar and the guy at the bar told us to order with our waiter. So we sit back down and try to get the guys attention, waved at him, said excuse me multiple times, and he flat out ignores us. Managed to get a single drink and a plate of cold fries after 45 minutes of sitting there, it was ridiculous. Lunch in West Seattle is a fluid affair, especially on a Monday, when many usual favorites don't open. You try to roll with it and make do. On a lark, I walked into Shadowland, a joint I back-burnered for bad service over a year ago, its primary recommendation being that the sushi joint I wanted to eat at wasn't open. So: Adventure! I was immediately worried; there was an odd smell of cheap cologne and bleachy cleaner. The joint, a dark moody David Lynch set (which I likey) gone yuppie (which I no likey) was almost empty except for the barkeep and a sole crusty looking fellow (perhaps the source of the cologne) holding a too-loud conversation with the television. Not promising. All the surfaces but the floor looked clean, and the '70s rock music was cool, so I shrugged and bellied up. My concern deepened as I looked over the stained, wrinkled, frankly septic-looking menu that the bartender handed me. Why do restaurants do this?! A menu is a first impression. It should not make you immediately want to wash your hands. Whatever. The menu is mostly sandwiches, some comfort-y appetizers, and a melange of nonsensical soups and salads. It seemed a day for unnecessary risks, so I ordered the gumbo ($12). And a shot of rye ($11). I might take risks, but I'm not insane. And...glad I did! Order the gumbo, that is; it wasn't half bad. Generous proteins (chicken, sausage, shrimp) noticeable trinity (onions, bell pepper, celery) and a lighter roux than I would have used, but good. Too much rice, but properly cooked rice, and generous okra content. Solid! My rye became a welcome side-kick rather than a medicinal stop-gap. Noms! Service was charming, friendly and prompt, a welcome change from my previous experience. If this joint concentrates on improving its appeal and impression from the customers point of view, toning down the bleach, cleaning the floors, and FOR GOD SAKES NOT HANDING PEOPLE MENUS THAT APPEAR TO GAVE BEEN RETRIEVED FROM A STORM DRAIN, I feel I would like to come here more often. Bad service. People came after us and were served and finished before we received our food. After 25 minutes we went in and asked for our check. The manager came to us and asked if we needed anything while i was looking around for our waiter. I told her that waiting almost 30 minutes was frustrating. Wait staff always are challenged but not when the restaurant is almost empty.. The waiter didn't check on our food until we asked almost a half hour later. The manager removed the charges for the food but never came back to us to apologize or explain anything. They put the food in boxes that went to compost when we got home. Vegan alert!!! We can actually get a REAL meal here y'all! Not a whisper of hummus is involved either thank god. They have a burger that defies belief. TWO grilled Field Roast patties, sautéed onions, avocado, fancy mustard, veganaise, tomato, lettuce, pickle. I mean, seriously. They set it down in front of me and I'm pretty sure I went into full Herbal Essences commercial mode. Then I took a bite and it became the When Harry Met Sally diner scene. I love this place! I have been going to Shadowland, and several other West Seattle bars and restaurants for many years. Shadowland is a great place, for great people. The bar staff is phenomenal. Great, fast, courteous, and lovable service from bartenders who know how to make a drink. The bar is fully stocked with liquor choices to quench any thirst, and they have recently added a few more beer taps serving up some great micro brews. The servers at Shadowland are great people. Service can be slow from time-to-time, as there is often too few servers for too many tables, take this time to enjoy the company you are with and the local art on the walls. If you want speed, hit up a drive-thru. This bar offers a wide range of entertainment throughout the week including: Trivia night (Mon), Singer/ song-writer night (Tues), and Circus Night (Wed) - They actually perform aerial acrobatics from their high celling! The menu is pretty awesome for bar food, if you can call it bar food, and offers a wide range of options. I myself, do not typically trust menus that try too many types of food; however, Shadowland has a diverse staff that have introduced options from Pho to Fried Chicken to Hawaiian sliders to a newly added Cheesesteak. In my several years (7+) of coming here, I have tried nearly everything on the menu. My personal taste loves some items, and doesn't really care for others. For those who care my suggestions for things to try include: Ribs, Cheesesteak, Hawaiian Sliders, Catfish Ruben, and the Field Roast Burger (Vegan). I personally think that the Corned beef Croquets and the Gyro are a bit on the bland side. Happy hour menu is slammin' with options ranging in prices up to $7.50 and offers the second best HH burger in West Seattle. I highly recommend this bar to all of my friends and family! read more

Where do I start? This has rapidly become one of my fav HH spots in West Seattle! I prefer Tuesday nights. It's open mic night and full of talent. Heard one of the best beat-boxers ever while enjoying a few too many cocktails with a very good friend. The food is AMAZZZZZEBALLS! Mac n Cheese, Braised Pork Lettuce Boats, Catfish Reubens, and Fried Pickles that people like me & Snooki devour. The HH menu ranges from $3-7 for grub and $1 off wells & drafts, for the vinos out there are (heavy pour) reds & whites for $6. Not the best drink prices but the food makes up for it! PROMISE! Shadowland is one of our favorite neighborhood hang outs. It's great for weekend brunch or lunch, weekday happy hour/dinner/late night, as well as a perfect spot to just sit, drink and chat. A step up from the typical American bar menu and then some. For what it is, it's good. I highly recommend their French Dip with braised oxtail, white cheddar, garlic aioli, horseradish, au jus. Possibly one of the best French Dips I've ever had. Their Pork Curban and Reuben sandwiches are also good. All served with hand cut fries or homemade pickle chips. In addition to sandwiches, menu includes soup, salads, small plates, entrees and desserts too. Their drink menu is nothing to shy away from either. We had brunch at Shadowland yesterday and we feel like we have found a hidden gem in West Seattle. I had a Bloody Mary and the chicken fried steak. The Bloody Mary was nice and spicy and the chicken fried steak was cooked to perfection. My only request would be for a tad bit more gravy as the steak sits on top of a buttermilk biscuit. Chicken fried steak + biscuits and gravy = the best of both worlds. My gal had a mimosa and the crab benedict. She loved the benedict and mentioned a couple times that we needed to return. I'm all for a great place to eat, and no exception, it has a great feel, the bar, with a lot of booths around, and a wait staff, which are more than happen to entertain the need for conversation. Walking into this location, it defiantly felt like a bar, but a short walk past the tables and the bar itself, you find booths, which you seat yourself at. So the food, I had order the burger, which is not small, but rather a perfect portion for a hungry person. In sort, I like burgers which trimmings, and with the option of a fried egg, and bacon, the white cheese layered on, it's a great burger, I'm sure it would go great with a chilled beer. (I didn't drink that day, I was the driver.) The servers are great, they are a fairly attractive bunch of people, with great personalities, no attitudes, but rather people who speak with you, help you decide what you might like, then get it to you. I went there, with a friend who recommended it, as a good place to eat and I would agree that it is a great place to stop by, especially after a nice long day at work, to munch on, and have good conversation. Parking is perhaps a little hard to find sometimes, but it's on California Ave, which means, even if you parked a little bit away, you are guaranteed to walk by some great shops also! I had honestly never heard of this place, but while looking up another restaurant to have date night at, this one popped up in the search results. We read some reviews and decided this was the place. So glad we did! We had the croquettes, fried pickles, and the poutine fries. Everything was just fantastic! The only downside was that there weren't more of the croquettes! The atmosphere was really laid back, and they have some really fun art on the walls. The server was very friendly, and everything came out really quickly. Shadowland is a great "hang-out" in West Seattle for a Friday night. Bear with me, because I'm going to the Twilight Zone here... I truly never expected to find a bar with free WiFi that also happened to offer a high-quality bowl of Pho. But when the internet went down at home just a couple of hours before an online job interview I had with a company in Taiwan, I went scrambling off-island for a place I could set-up without causing a scene. Starbucks or McDonalds would have been way too awkward. I stumbled into Shadowland and explained the situation. The servers were super-cool about it, invited me to take a booth in back, where I ordered some food. While it did get louder as the evening went on, I pulled off a 2-hour interview with a good story and landed the job. For that alone, these guys deserve major kudos. So, breaking down the rest of it... most of the place is taken up by a large bar with stools and small tables around it, with some larger booths and tables in the back. On a Friday night, this place really gets going by about 7 or 8pm. Nearly every seat is filled and everyone was having a good time. Service was solid and friendly. There are some TVs over the bar, but this isn't really a "sit-back-and-watch-the-game" atmosphere. You'll want a dive-bar for something like that. Shadowland is more of a "meet-my-friends-for-drinks-and-diggin'-the-scene" vibe. The menu is tailored, which means you won't have the widest selection, but you'll find diverse and interesting choices that appeal to many different tastes. You can check out the menu on their website. The Pho was some of the best I've had anywhere. Sure, I paid more for it than the mom-and-pop shop down the street, but I also wouldn't expect to have a choice of steaks, salads, ribs, BBQ chicken, sandwiches, and appetizers like artichoke dip or hummus in the same establishment. That makes this place pretty cool and when you throw in the excitement of the scene, this place is a winner. read more

I like the darkish atmosphere in this place. It gives you an authentic feel of a bar. They have a fair enough selection of food & drinks. However, I found the food kinda middle of the road. I had the shrimp po boy, which was a good size, but didn't taste like anything special. Perhaps they could add a few more toppings, like coleslaw or pickles, etc. I thought the pickle chips would be more pickle, but they were more batter. The beer was good; appreciated the local pour.
