I was visiting the East Coast a few weeks back and had a whopping hour in the state of Rhode Island. I knew I needed to do two things in that hour, the first was to eat some lunch and the second was to hit up a small antique shop, and the Shady Acres Diner helped me do one of those things. This old school style diner sits right on the side of the road and looked like that classic New England diner I loved so much as a kid. The one things I didn't eat while out east yet when I came here was Clam Chowder so I sat at the counter and ordered some clam chowder and a side of house cut french fries for lunch. The employee behind the counter was very friendly and delightful to talk too, and when the food came out it was exactly what I wanted out of this lunch. The french fries were crispy and delicious and the bowl steaming hot bowl of clam chowder really hit the spot. The flavour was great, and if i'm being honest I 100% dipped the french fries in it too, I was living my best life at the counter. Overall, Shady Acres Diner is a charming New England diner and somewhere I'm glad I stopped for lunch at. I may of only spent a little bit of time in Rhode Island on this trip, but thanks to some great food I'll remember it fondly! read more

The food was acceptable for dinner food but prices were not acceptable. For one teaspoon of sauerkraut on my hot dog I was charged two dollars. Everything was An add on. Glass of wine was less than half full. Only thing worth the money was the milk shake. Will not be back. read more

We stopped for lunch on our way through the area. Great little find! Very unsuspecting from the outside, nicely decorated & clean inside! Food was very good, highly recommend if you're looking for a good quick lunch! Missing from the pics are the fried fish sandwich and GF pizza (pesto, arugula, fresh mozzarella tomatoes w/balsamic drizzle) but they were delicious! Service was great too! read more

I've been coming here for about 6 months. The food is really good and the staff is very friendly. My only complaint is they stopped giving fries with the sandwiches and burgers and now they want $5 for a side of fries. I think the burgers and sandwiches are priced enough to include fries. I'd tried this place a few years back and was disappointed but I was in the area and hungry so decided to give them a 2nd shot. Very limited menu for a diner, mainly burgers. Clam chowder surprisingly good: thick creamy, lots of clams and dill. Mushroom Swiss burger properly cooked to med-well order, w/ nice caramelized onions, but tiny patty on small nondescript bun out of the bag.. No ketchup on table. Result like what you'd get at a charity function booth. Chips were a bag of Ruffles. Iced tea in a jar with lemon slice was okay. Waiter was fine and pleasant. The place has a secondary name: Apocalypse Cafe. Should've been a clue. Do not recommend. read more

Absolutely love this hidden gem, the food is so high quality for a diner. Real hand cut french fries, super tasty fish and chips, always a nice dessert selection and I appreciate that they use paper take out containers instead of the gross black plastic ones. read more

This is mine and my husband's favorite place, it is really good home cooked food. Every thing they serve is handmade and you can tell. My favorite at is their clam fritters and my second favorite is their corned beef has nice pieces of corned beef and it is delicious with eggs over easy. If you are ever in Foster Rhode Island this is a must. read more

Shady Acres's exterior reminds me of the ice cream parlors of my youth. Regretfully, it wasn't open for ice cream and the ladder to the kid's slide was missing a rung and looked unsafe. We went inside the diner for lunch the first thing the kids mentioned was the dirty floor, bacon, syrup, and trash, under our table. The food had mixed reviews, salad had interesting tasty polenta croutons, burgers were good, the meat in the steak sandwich was a bit tough, fish and chips with onion rings were good but overly battered, and the omelet didn't have much cheese or mushrooms but was cooked well and home fries were flavorful but too salty. Service was slow. If i return it will only be to try the ice cream. read more

In this long stretch between providence and Hartford I like SA. The menu has lots of option without being a Greek diner menu. They have plenty of parking and a place to walk the dog if you need that. They also have picnic tables outside and plenty of booths inside. The fountain drinks are large and the staff is nice. Today I got a simple chicken Cesar wrap and fries. ok, so truth, this slipped past my mind from when i tried them out , too bad, was here back in the winter, just drove past it this week (memory jogger!) and didnt look any different, so im ok with posting this yelp! 3 stars is about what i recon they get, it wasnt drive worthy for sure, however, the family lives in cranston, we live in central connecticut, break out the map, youll find this about half way, hence, an option. the other option is that country club on the ri/ct border, also not a great option all things considered. the food was ok, again, nothing to write home about. i guess if your a townie, this is your hang out, (seemed like they knew yous) so for those of you living in foster, congrats, they got you covered for local breakfast/lunch with average products! out of towners though, maybe not worth the stop. we did do late breakfast on the weekend, there was a lot of us, but they also dont take reservations, they do say to call ahead, which we did, so no problems getting a seat. variety is normal, again, nothing on the menu screaming to you to be a must have for sure. i found my bacon/cheddar omelet to be average, not a fan of their homefries (oniony) i think my dad got the ham omelet, looked like deli meat. meh, i have nothing else to add, you could do worse, you also would need to drive a ways to do better. read more

We ordered gravy and cheese fries, clam chowder and clam cakes, a burger with greens, and the kids had pancakes. The disco fries came with real mushroom gravy. The burger was cooked exactly as I ordered, juicy and tender, and the house greens looked just made up for me. I wish I had ordered the clam chowder it was so dang good to try. The pancakes also fluffy and buttery. The servers seemed like family, very friendly, and someone stopped by to make sure we had everything. The name of the place and decor alone are worth a stop. We couldn't have happened upon a nicer place after a family hike. read more

Ate breakfast here about a year ago and the food was bland and seemed pre-prepared, not fresh. Despite passing this place every day on my commute, I've never felt the need to return. Stopped by after a long day, craving soft serve ice cream, because I checked here & the front page of their website to see if they have it. The main page of the website reads, "We now have soft serve!" Well, apparently that came and went, because they no longer are serving it. Just keep driving on by - if you want good or fresh food, you've got a few options over the border in CT. Don't waste your time here like I did. read more

Update- stopped in today for lunch. Everything was delicious! We all had burgers - they were perfectly cooked. The homemade herb vinaigrette was perfection. So fresh and tasty. We also had the hash browns and homemade pickled vegetables. Superb! --- I stopped in for breakfast because I heard that this place was under new ownership. I'd only been once before and the breakfast was incredibly bland and overpriced. Im happy to say that the prices have gone down and the quality has improved. The omelette I orderestasted like it was made with fresh local eggs -- a huge improvement from last time. The home fries were a bit undercooked but the seasoning was nice. Shady acres is a savior in our little town of Foster. The food is SO good! Real greens in the salad - not iceberg lettuce - with delicious vinaigrette. Tonight I had the special lobster roll - the lobster was so fresh and the dressing was light and perfect. Their French fries are perfectly greasy and salty. Their wines are clearly selected with intension - excellent compliments to the meals. They have options for meat lovers - burgers, steak, fried chicken - and there are a few vegan and vegetarian options - the cauliflower flatbread with arugula is my daughter's favorite and I love the falafel plate. Top off your meal with their delicious ice cream and it is a perfect family dinner. They are known for their excellent breakfast and brunch menu. The best eggs benedict around. Wow... I've driven by this place multiple times on my way back from the Boston area, but never stopped in... Always wanted to give it a try, but I was always pressed for time. Now I'm kicking myself!!! Shockingly big menu and a really quaint, friendly setting (takes me back to places I went as a child in the 60s). I was very disappointed with this place. The times I went there the service was terrible and I had received bad attitudes from the staff. They acted like they did not even want their customers there. Tried ordering breakfast at 3:30pm and had a nasty reply that they only sell breakfast till 3pm and nowhere does that say on their menu or online not to mention its valentines day and exact words from them were "HAVE FUN TRYING TO FIND BREAKFAST AT THIS TIME ha ha GOODBYE"!!! I love breakfast and this place is a hidden gem for a quick and cheap breakfast (or meal as they serve lunch as well). It's an old building but it has a ton of character. When you walk in there's a horseshoe bar in the restaurant which is often frequented by the sweetest senior citizens! They definitely have regular's that they cater to in here. The staff is ALWAYS super friendly and helpful! I always enjoy the home fries (deep fried over the grilled but they are both delicious). I typically order French toast, home fries & bacon and it's consistently good. Coffee isn't too too bad either. $22 for two and a half breakfasts is a little bit pricey though- which was unusually high for my typical visit. read more

Amazing, surprisingly artisanal stellar menu options for out in the middle of nowhere (like using garlic scapes and polenta as ingredients for example in some of their specials). Despite the food being comparable to a high end new American cuisine restaurant in providence, the prices are extremely affordable as you would expect at a local diner. read more

I just had the pulled pork dinner from shady"s and boy was I wowed! I was hoping it would be good but they surpassed my expectations. It came with 3 wraps a side of corn on the cob and the a generous piece of moist cornbread. It was the best pulled pork I've ever had in Foster. Okay, that was a joke, it might be the best pulled pork I've had in RI. Seriously delicious pulled pork. I will be returning next week for the special on Fri. Keep up the good work! read more
