I came in one lunch to check out the new cafe. I decided to try the Veggie Plate although I at first thought the price was a little steep. Then I saw my portions! The plate was definitely worth the money as the server heaped on the baba ghanoush, grilled zucchini, cucumber/tomato/onion salad, and gave me three good size falafels. For my fifth side I got the lentil soup. The best part of the meal was the flavor. This was some of the best baba ghanoush, falafels, and lentil soup I've ever had. The soup and falafels were just a touch spicy and the eggplant was perfectly smokey. The salad and zucchini were also delicious. It's been two weeks since I stopped by and I'm so excited to be eating dinner there tonight. I can't wait to try their Persian entrees such as Gormeh Sabzi! I really like this cafe. It is attached to a cute market with various ethnic foods. I was surprised at the variety. They seem to have everything from the traditional Mediterranean to Turkish and Russian treats. The cafe itself had a nice melody of options from shawarma to butter chicken. I had a skewer of lamb that was tender and seasoned very well. If I was a little hungrier at the time I would have enjoyed a bit of everything. So, I suckered my bf into going here after he decided that he was in the mood for Greek, but nothing too ethnic...go figure. This was a good compromise as I've been wanting to go here and the reviews were nothing but good. I personally love restaurants attached to grocery stores. After telling the guy there that I don't eat beef or pork, he gave me a sample of lentils with rice and that was really good, but ultimately, I decided on this lamb stew that had this awesomely huge lamb bone in it and a lot of greens boiled in. It was serve with rice and I immediately started chowing down. The lamb was tender, the greens were not of the bitter variety and there was a nice hint of lemon too. I don't know authentic, but I know what I like. The lassi that have there is good and really thick - the straw stands in it - but it's a little on the sweet side and this red syrup they put in it doesn't help matters, but overall, it's still a good lassi. Disappointing, I'll stick to Peace Deli down the road. I've given this place 2 chances, both subpar. Family run, they are nice & friendly though each time they've forgotten one part of my order. (Naan bread & yogurt sauce). I've gotten the chicken kebab that was dry & under spiced. The chicken shawarma was just diced up badly seasoned meat that was not cooked well. The rice was too wet, though it had a good flavor. The tomato and cucumber salad which I was warned was spicy, had no zing and the veggies were limp. The baba ganoush had an odd texture and a peanut like flavor. I like supporting local places, but this is one restaurant I will be skipping from now on. read more

Meh. The shawarma is an easy way to gauge the quality of middle eastern food, whether it's from a food cart in the middle east to a restaurant virtually anywhere. With that in mind, I tried the Combo shawarma here (beef/chicken). found it flavorless and included extremely bland meat, the same meats that'd likely be used in many other dishes. I have lived the Middle East for years and love Mediterranean food. I have complained because there wasn't a good Mediterranean restaurant in Austin. When I saw that Shahi Restaurant had opened up I had to try it. The food there is the most authentic I have encountered in Austin. One will find items like Humus and baba ganoush and taboleh in supermarkets and some restaurants and they don't taste just right. Everything at Shahi that we ordered was absolutely delicious and true to the authentic flavors. Not only that, but they actually serve lamb kebobs! Lamb never has been the most popular meat in Texas and a good lamb dish is hard to find, but their kebabs and rice is delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant. In my second visit to Shahi I was, again, impressed with the food. The young lady who runs the restraunt is friendly and attentive to the uninitiated. The family is from Bangladesh and they take pride in their food. We had just about everything on the menu and it was all good. Spinach/onion pakora is legend, fresh naan from a tandor, humus that was great, ground beef kebab was seasoned and cooked to perfection. We drove over sixty miles for my Father's Day meal...... It's a little tucked away on the corner of Parmer and North Lamar, but Shahi Cafe is worth it. I ordered the shawarma combo platter, which is both lamb and beef with rice and a choice of 2 sides. And a generous amount of pita! The cafe is actually connected to a grocery store, so you can also shop and eat at your leisure. I will definitely be coming back to try some other items. read more

Came here with a group of 5 friends. Combo shawarma was good, but i didn't like the wrap they used. Same wrap as those used for American chicken caesar salads. The falafel side was awful. It was hard as a rock. I tried the chicken tikka kabob and it was straight up delicious. Austin definitely needs more ethnic food places like this. Very bad and poor customer service. I am so dissatisfied and disappointed with this establishment if I can call this small store in the center of filthy corner of Lamar and Parmer. I shopped here plenty times and was aware of expired product they sell. This time I bought unexpired pack of Russian cookies with sweet filling called "pryaninki". Needless to say I spent $40 two days ago. Sometimes I spend more then that. When I opened cookies to give to my little one I found warms and web from all this nastiness inside. That was a big NO. I personally went back to return so they can pull those from shelves and expected that they will do something about that. When I got there shorter old man came up to me. His reaction was like well nothing bad happened. He checked date and said ok I will give you refund. NO apologies, NO offering of similar product instead. When I asked him that's all what you can say, his entire face expression was: I don't give a f...... I told him that his customer service is suck and he lives in American society where customer service is to bring a Customer and not to make an extra dollar on him/her. And his business is just to make money money and he cares less whether he selling shit or poop. Anyways I was mad and I said not these kind of immigrants made America. And I would handle this situation completely different. You lost customer. Also I will call IRS or BBB because there is no taxes deduction on my receipt and I will give you no stars. The buffet at this cafe is fantastic. There are a lot of restaurants in Austin that offer tastey but generic Indian food. Shahi stands out from this crowd by offering a range of simple dishes that really taste homemade and remind me of home-cooked meals I ate in Bangladesh years ago. Austin has not seen a better kebab than Shahi's. If you don't do basmati rice, have them substitute naan for the rice. Their naan is really good too, it goes perfectly with the cucumber yogurt and their delicious hummus. Did I mention the mango lasso??? Incredible, I always want more. I have already been here a few times since finding it and can't wait to get back. GREAT lunch buffet with fantastic flavor. The dishes are not very spicy (which is not unusual for a buffet), but they do have kacha morich available on the buffet so you can add heat to your personal preference. The vegetables and meat curries are excellently seasoned - tastes like home cooking, not typically bland restaurant fare. AND there's a dispenser of doodh cha (milk tea) available. I got a falafel sandwich here for pickup, and it was awful. The bread was crusty and cold, the falafel was tangy, cold, and dry, and it was loaded with onions! I could barely take more than 3 bites. This is inside of a grocery store- so your very basic set up. They have a buffet with Indian food and salad part as part of the buffet. The people who work there are really nice! It was my first time trying the Buffett at shahi and they impressed me. They 5 chicken dishes,1 beef and 2 mutton dish. The taste reminded me of Bihari food, which is pleasantly different than the Punjabi inspired dishes that most of the other restaurants sport. Additionally they had some middle eastern sides. The best part was the naans, which are fresh and served on the table. They soft and so tasteful that I couldn't afford wasting one bit. Hope they continue to maintain this. read more

Absolutely awesome. The tikka kabob is wonderful. The flavor resembles Indian took a masala. I get the plate. The rice is perfect and the charred tomato is my favorite Persian addition. I skip the salad and get hummus. I add sumac at the table. I get a side or 2 of tabouli salad. The naan works well with the hummus. Then I also add spinach pakora. The only issue is they have only sweet tea. I love it but my hubs hates sweet tea. The staff is always friendly. Must read more

I love eating here and it's always fun to take a stroll through the store. The Chicken Tikki is my favorite dinner. I love the rice - so flavorful. Recently I just wanted a snack and quiet place to check my messages. I ordered the olives and feta plate and the hummus plate. Both were tasty and plentiful. The Potato Samosa's melt in your mouth.(A spicy potato pastry.) Sometimes I have to stop just for one of those. The few things I don't care for are simply my personal taste. The staff are always so friendly and personable. I like the homey atmosphere. The only thing I think needs improvement are the baklava. It's just too doughy. Maybe it's a style I'm not familiar with. Food is terrible. Misleading posters. They advertise one thing, serve you another. And then they like to argue about it.

If you bought a cash certificate on Restaurant.com for this restaurant, they will refuse to accept the certificate. There is no obvious sign upfront on the door or at any other obvious location except a small piece of paper saying "not accept Restaurant.com certificate" on the cashier machine in the back of the restaurant. And at the same time, we walked with the certificate in hand but they did not mention anything about not accepting until we finished dining. We end up paying the full price without the certificate. The food was fine. However, the certificate is the incentive, that brought us to try this restaurant. I am very disappointed about this issue. If they do not accept, they should not sell the certificate. read more

My girlfriend and I stumbled upon it shortly after it opened and we were hooked almost immediately (it's close to home so we're here 2x/week now). The owners are SUPER nice and friendly as well. I usually get their spicy minced beef and my girlfriend gets the chicken shawarma. It's always delicious and I've never had a bad meal here.
