    Lamb over rice
    Josh Y.

Excellent lamb over rice. Got a bogo offer on Uber eats, and decided to try it out after great yelp reviews. Yelp was right. Flavorful, filling, and fresh. I got the white sauce on the lamb and the spicy red sauce on the side. Unfortunately after a few bites I put too much hot sauce on, which made it less enjoyable, but that was my fault. I'd order this again, very solid, reminded me of some of the best halal trucks in NYC. 5*.

We got the chicken over rice and the combo meat over rice to go. The meals were delicious with excellent sauce. I recommend getting all the sauces - even on the side to try them out. They're not as strong when mixing the whole bowl so would recommend trying them all. The bowls were decently sized and were pretty filling. I had to eat 3/4th and save some for later. The chicken was good, but the lamb was delicious. Would recommend the combo if debating between the meat. The salad was very fresh and went well with the meat and various toppings. The rice tasted a little plain. Everyone was super friendly and were helpful when explaining the sauces. The interior was casual with quite a few seating spots. Plenty of parking outside and there were quite a few stores along.

New and only TX outpost of a popular NYC-style gyro shop serving up tasty and hefty platters, wrap, and burgers at a great value. There's been a wave of these kinds of shops moving into HTX, and this one serves up a great platter with standout fresh ingredients. Vibe: very casual with ample seating. Service was good and fast. Food: Ordered a combo platter of chicken and lamb over rice with salad, beans, grilled onions, white sauce, and red sauce and took it to go. Ate it about 25 minutes later. Marinated chicken was tender, flavorful, and cut into thick chunks - one of my favorite versions of this in a halal platter. Lamb gyro is also served diced into thick chunks and tasted good. The salad stood out as very fresh which I enjoyed a lot. White sauce is pretty mild and doesn't stand out, red sauce gives a nice kick. I regret not adding the green sauce (like a cilantro lime flavor) as I feel like it would have completed the white sauce nicely and tied it together better. Rice was pretty plain and a little too watery for my preference.

I decided to try out Shah's Halal Cart since I was in the area. They are located in west Houston and are open really late if you ever get late night cravings. They started out as a halal cart in Queens and have since expanded to multiple locations, including 2 in Dallas. They offer rice platters, burgers, salads, and gyros. I decided to get their lamb over rice platter. I believe their chicken is more popular though. It comes with basmati rice, a salad mix, and lamb. I topped it with black beans, chickpeas, grilled onions, and hummus. I also got 3 of their sauces. The white garlic sauce, green cilantro like sauce, and their red spicy sauce. They also have a bbq sauce available but I decided not to add it. The worker also recommended that I add pakora chips in my platter for a little extra and I decided to trust him with the suggestion. They really load up your bowl here and it smelled so good when it came out. I drove 30 mins before I ate this and it was still warm. The lamb was tender and flavorful but I wouldn't say it was as much as gyro hut. The worker hooked me up with extra garlic sauce which I appreciated, you can never have too much of that. The red sauce wasn't as spicy as I thought it was going to be but it still gave a nice kick. The pakora chips are basically their version of fried potato strips, they soaked up the sauces and went pretty well with the platter. The portion was so huge that I had enough for a second meal. Pretty solid spot but it's quite a drive for me unfortunately.

They always forget the include sauce when it's on the side for delivery. This is the second time it's happened! Should probably double check deliveries before packing! All I have is dry rice, meat and salad to eat.

The potato salad was a huge surprise, I'm usually not a potato salad person, but this one was a solid 10/10. One thing we really appreciated was the toppings bar, which included pickles, onions, pickled onions, jalapeños, and two different barbecue sauces so you could customize each bite. They even had a mini soft-serve ice cream machine for a little dessert after your meal, which was a nice touch. They also offer family meal options, making it a great choice for larger groups. This is a nicely sized spot next to the Jusgo plaza in Houston Chinatown, so plenty of parking and also food options. It's tucked in a corner but should not be written off. Its a pretty casual sitdown restaurant and we were welcomed and sat pretty quickly on a Saturday around 8:30PM. We were provided menus and started ordering everything that sounded good (within reason for 2, sorta). We ended up getting the Uyghur polo with lamb shank, Uyghur goshnaan, korma chop, garlic cucumbers, mint tea, and a yogurt for dessert. This was more than enough food for 2 but I wanted to try a bunch and this is me holding back. The Uyghur goshnaan was very crispy and the filling was flavorful and juicy, good lamb flavor and nice spices. The Uyghur polo with lamb shank was great and the pilaf had a nice sweetness with raisins that cut through some of the fatty richness of the lamb. The korma chop was also super flavorful with a nice savory sauce and noodled with an excellent texture, very QQ. I don't usually order cucumbers at Asian restaurants cause I can make a cucumber salad pretty easily at home but the one here was very good. Excellent refreshing crunch and garlic flavor to go with all the other dishes. The mint tea was also nice to wash down the mountains of food I was inhaling. I also enjoyed the yogurt, it's a thicker yogurt like a Greek yogurt and topped with honey and raisins. Again, a nice sweet/tart treat that didn't feel too heavy after everything else. I definitely need to come back as I didn't even get my big plate chicken but it'll be hard to choose between all the options. I def recommend this spot, esp if you like lamb as all the dishes we had were excellent and priced fairly for the portion and current economic situation.

She emphasizes few ingredients that complement and highlight each other. Above all else is technique. The knowledge to know which vegetables are in season, the perfect time to poach fish, infusing oil with the correct about of peppercorns and aromatics takes years of practice. What I find surprising is how Mala Sichuan Bistro scaled out their restaurants with the same quality, crispiness, and consistency across all locations. The MKT location has the most beautiful interior, which is why I choose to go there. If Mala told you the crispy chicken seasoning was only 4-5 ingredients, would you believe it? Chinese cooking is about letting one ingredient shine in the spotlight with the supporting actors complement one another. My love for cooking started with the spicy crispy chicken. The crunch, the numbing from the peppercorns, the push and pull between sweet and salty. The oil to fry the chicken and the oil to dress the chicken afterwards creates a masterpiece that I have not been able to replicate at home nor have I found any other restaurant in America with the same caliber. The dry pot fish melts in your mouth with its delicate batter. The lotus root is crunchy while the cauliflower soaks up the delicious sauce. Compared to the water boiled fish, this dish is my new favorite coming into here. For the avid regulars of Mala Sichuan, I challenge you - Order something a little out of your comfort zone every time you come. Trust that the chefs have years of knowledge and the sample size for refining dishes almost 4x ours. If survival of the fittest makes the restaurant business cutthroat here, imagine the caliber of dishes that exist in China. Mala Sichuan didn't invent these dishes, it came from generations of testing, iterating, and feedback from their customers. The chicken is crispy without thick breading. Lots of garlic, szechuan peppers, and seasoning. (I wouldn't recommend eating the peppers.) The ambiance is great. The service can be lacking - they need to hire more servers because there's 1-2 servers for the entire restaurant and it gets packed. Every time we need something, we have to flag a server.
