I was really excited to try Shaka because I love Mo Bettas and wanted to try another Hawaiian place. Overall, the food was pretty run of the mill. I ordered the teriyaki chicken plate, my wife got the Hawaiian BBQ mix plate with BBQ chicken, BBQ beef and kalbi short ribs. Everything was just okay including the macaroni salad. The chicken was drowning in sweet teriyaki sauce. The pricing was pretty reasonable so I guess the food reflects that. I ordered the crab Rangoon too which I usually love but it was very bland and I didn't finish it. The BBQ chicken and teriyaki chicken are the same meat, but teriyaki chicken is cut and has teriyaki sauce on top. I did find the menu confusing as they have "mini" plates, lunch plates which are available all day, and an aloha plate which is similar to the lunch plate. They serve several traditional Hawaiian plates but there's no description of any plates available on the menu. We brought our baby but unfortunately there was no changing table in the bathroom. They do have high chairs, however. Shaka had a sign that "limited seating was available", and the seating area was missing a bunch of tables. Might have been too hyped up to try this place, but other than loving the fried white fish, everything else was pretty average... You might not be able to make it to Maui this week, but you can sure eat like you were there by going to Shaka Hawaiian BBQ. Trust me, I've spent a lot of time on the Valley Isle, and I've had my share of the local grinds and luau fare. Shaka Hawaiian BBQ is authentic and deserving of a visit real soon. They do a lot of business from their drive through and their dine-in option is available, too. Some of the tables were off limits, for distancing. Some of the staff were wearing masks, but the cooks were not. That didn't particularly worry me, though. We has planned to get take-out, to enjoy in our backyard. Since this was our first visit, we decided to try a couple of classic plate lunches. I got the Kalua Pork with Cabbage. This is basically pulled pork, piled onto steamed cabbage. It's the typical must-have main course at a luau buffet line. The only thing missing was the hula show. It was so good, I want to go back and ask where their imu is. FYI, an imu is a Hawaiian underground barbeque pit. Anyway, the plate lunch also comes with 2 scoops of rice (I like a sprinkle of soy sauce) and a scoop of mac salad. Dat's just like it's supposed to be. They gave me some teriyaki sauce, but I didn't want it for the pork; it was perfect as is. I did put some on the cabbage, though. I'll tell you something. I've tried other local restaurants that claimed to have Hawaiian food (plate lunche, poke bowl, etc) and have been disappointed. Two big shakas for Shaka Hawaiian BBQ, though. So, let me preface this by saying. I grew up in Hawaii and have had a lot of plate lunches. I give the benefit of the doubt when I have a plate lunch anywhere outside of Hawaii and am pretty forgiving. Well, the food was okay. Had the plate with chicken katsu, bbq meat, and chicken. Nothing outstanding, but all was good. The bbq meat and chicken were marinated pretty well and the chicken katsu was fine. There is nothing like a plate lunch when you haven't had one in a while. The saddest part is that we really wanted some mac salad, so we ordered an extra side. The macaroni was undercooked. It was kind of chewy. So disappointing, especially when ordering a side means you get 3 scoops! That is a lot. Biting into macaroni that is just slightly undercooked just kills the enjoyment of your meal. Service was fine. Nothing special. This place is in an odd location. The end unit of a strip mall surrounded by other strip malls. Would I eat there again? Maybe. I would not go out of my way to go back, but if I was in the area, I might give it another chance. read more

Everything I've tried on the menu is amazing! I've only used the drive through so far so can't really talk about the inside but the drive through service is pretty fast and convenient so I'm glad that they have that option. The portions are also very big so you get a great bang for your buck if you're looking for something filling. The BBQ chicken is my favorite! Smoky and tender with a good level of char. I've also tried the kalbi short ribs and the fire chicken and they were both very good. The kalbi short ribs were tender and well marinated, and the fire chicken had a great level of heat to it. My family and I grew up in Hawaii and this was a perfect taste of home on the islands. Very simple yet tasty plates of childhood memories. We had a plate of loco moco and chicken katsu--the most iconic of all local Hawaiian plate lunches. Done very well and presented neatly. Could've done without the cabbage effort of trying to make it look like we're getting more food but everyone does it. Atmosphere was welcoming and service was friendly. Clean and organized layout for spacious sitting. Highly recommend coming to this restaurant if you want a taste of the islands and what is local Hawaiians would eat at lunch!! When we got here, we were a little disappointed because only drive-thru was open. I know covid has changed the ways restaurants operate. But in my area, most restaurants are open with reduced capacity. Anyway, since we got here, we went ahead and ordered from the drive-thru. We ordered the BBQ plate, which had BBQ chicken, beef, and short ribs. All three of the items tasted very deliciously, but I liked the chicken most. It was tender and savory. I love Hawaiian BBQ because the meat is marinated in soy sauce and other herbs with a touch of sweetness, and grilled to golden brown. I liked the beef and the short ribs also. They were very savory, but were not as tender as the chicken. The other entree we got was the fried white fish. It was just fine. But we do like the accompanying salad -- the portion was really generous. We also got the fried shrimp appetizer. It was really good. The golden brown fried shrimp came on a bed of chopped lettuce. They were crispy and crunchy. We finished them in no time. Overall, we enjoyed all the food. Hopefully next time we come, we can go inside and enjoy the Hawaiian decor. read more

Ok so we have lived on Oahu for a few years so I was so excited to run into this place! I was getting my hair done across the way and she said it was worth the try. We loved it! The flavors remind me so much of the hawaiian food out there so I am so glad we tried it! We enjoyed the bbq chicken mini bowls and the spam musubi. So so tasty and fresh. There's nothing I love more than a good Hawaiian bbq joint. Shaka did not disappoint. I checked out their menu online and was disappointed to see that they did not have loco moco. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they do have loco moco when I went into the restaurant to order. Walking in, there's limited seating with only a few tables open. Luckily we were ordering to go. There's also a drive thru. As usual, you order at the counter in the front. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced. I ordered the loco moco and chicken katsu. My friend ordered the fire chicken. The Mac salad is fantastic. Great flavor and not just mayo like some places. The loco moco has to be the highlight. Then burger patties and the gravy was seasoned very well, and perfect sunny side eggs on top! Chicken katsu was perfectly crispy and the sauce was delicious. Most Hawaiian places I've been to us at least a 15 minute wait, but this was probably like 5 minutes. Super quick service. I will definitely be back! read more

I really wanted to love them, but just couldn't. They were good for the most part, but two big problems. First, they got our orders wrong on two of the three orders. We had ordered the teriyaki chicken and beef, and instead got two versions of chicken. No doubt, the teriyaki chicken was excellent. Also, the tossed salad was not like anything I ever had in Hawaii. The shaved red onion was a bit off putting and the dressing was ... different. I would rather have had the Mac salad. Another pretty good Hawaiian bbq plate place! I came for takeout since this whole covid and they had a drive through which was really easy and fast! The person taking my order was really nice and helpful and got us everything we needed. Very organized and great! Decided to get the Hawaiian bbq mix plate and the spicy chicken so that my bf and I could try a bunch of the meats. I liked the bbq beef and chicken alot! Ask for teriyaki sauce on side to dip! Spicy chicken was good but a little salty more than spicy and can be a little overwhelming for a whole protien. I'd say to mix the spicy chicken and get another protein so it doesnt get too tiring or overwhelming. The spicy chicken also has a slight curry or cumin smell/taste so if you dont like that then maybe don't get it. It kinda reminds me of a korean spicy chicken bbq but a little bit more curry flavored or some other type of spice haha. Over all pretty good and comparable to L&L Hawaiian thay I also like to go to. Price is pretty reasonable here and everything tastes pretty good. I didn't really like the mac salad for some reason though. I guess it was a bit more mayo centered and not sweet? Wow. The flavour and presentation was fantastic. I ordered the mini plate with spicy chicken, and it comes with rice, veg, and macaroni salad. I've had something similar at Hawaiian Bros and the flavour just isnt there. But Shaka was amazing. I ordered it through the drive thru and drive to my destination before eating, and it was still piping hot 20 minutes later. The sauce and spice gave the cabbage a great kick. Yum! So happy to have a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant so close to home. Let alone one with a drive thru! If you've never had Hawaiian food before, it's basically a smorgasbord of Asian foods with a Hawaiian twist. You can get anything from Kalbi (Korean short ribs), Katsu (Japanese fried cutlet), to Teriyaki and BBQ Chicken (my favorite) all in the same place. If you've never had a Spam Musubi you gotta dry it out. They grill the spam and wrap it in seaweed like a big piece of sushi. It's amazing. My recommendations are the bbq chicken, katsu, and spam musubi. Their katsu sauce is delicious, it has a nice tang to it. I'd bet that it's homemade. Come hungry, the portions are generous here. This place is a nice alternative Hawaiian spot to L&L Hawaiian BBQ. I usually get the katsu plate, BBQ katsu combo plate and spam musubi appetizer. The katsu is so crispy! An advantage Shaka has over L&L is they offer more plate combos. Inside the restaurant they have self-serve barbecue and katsu sauce. The katsu sauce at this place is more runny than L&L (I prefer L&L's katsu sauce). The cabbage is boiled in some sort of wasabi water so it does have a little bit of a kick rather than being super plain - keep that in mind if you don't like wasabi. Last time I was here I overheard a customer ask for extra mac salad in lieu of the veggies, which is something I will try next time because I definitely prefer more mac salad. This is a place I will order takeout if I'm in the area, but it's too far for me to go out of my way for Hawaiian food. I will definitely be back. read more

Ordered Shaka through Uber eats the other day. Was craving short ribs and figured I give these a try. The meat was very flavorful and tender. The short ribs were pretty fatty but I usually expect that tbh. I got the white rice and Mac salad for the sides. The rice was plain but delicious with the sauces that came with the meal. The Mac salad wasn't nasty but it wasn't my preferred taste. Very creamy though. My partner got the Hawaiian bbq mix. It came with the short ribs, bbq beef & bbq chicken. They said their meat was very tender and delicious as well. It was loaded with meat. We got the crab rangoons which were just cream cheese filled fried wontons. No imitation crab. Still pretty good dipped in the darker bbq sauce. We also tried the crispy shrimp. They weren't bad. A little mushy on the inside but I did like the flavor. All in all it was a pretty decent meal and I would definitely recommend trying the Hawaiian bbq mix for sure. You get a good amount of food for the price so I wasn't disappointed in that. read more
