I've been here three times now. Tried the chili cheese dog, the chicken tenders, fries and the beef & cheese croissant. The food looks amazing but the taste is meh. Portillo's was one of my go-to's in Chicago, primarily for the Italian beef and Chicago hot dogs. So driving on the DNT that famous sign caught my eye and I wondered if somehow I went through a time-traveling portal and I ended up in Chi-Town. I had plans on Frisco but then found out there was another Portillo's down the street from me. Walking in and looking at all of the decor and set up were reminiscent of Portillo's in Chicago but with a Texas spin. The order counter is still there but added a few self order kiosks. The pick up window is down from the order counter and you wait for your number to be called. The Chicago dog, Maxwell St. polish sausage and the Italian beef tasted exactly as I remembered: delicious, juicy meat, tasty sausage and dogs were all top notch. Let me start out by saying the atmosphere of this place was amazing. Wide open, well decorated, and plenty of space. The ordering system was nice with kiosks available that accommodated customizations to your food. Bf and I only waited maybe 5 minutes for our order to come out. Bf got the combo sandwich and I got the Chicago hot dogs. The sandwich was alright, I thought the roast beef tasted rather like a McAlister's French dip. My hot dogs were just... okay honestly. They weren't grilled, and most of what I could taste was just pickle and mustard. The fries were crinkle fries and thus were only okay, but inoffensive. We tried the chocolate cake after I had seen reviews of even people who didn't like the normal food enjoying it. It was pretty good, the cake itself had a very pleasant fluffy texture. The frosting was very obviously the chocolate dunkin heines you can get at the grocery store (which is still good, but, you know). Overall I don't think the food was enough for me to come back. The combo was $15 which is slightly more expensive than other fast food combos I would enjoy more. But it was definitely worth a try. read more

So, being from Illinois I often miss mild sauce, Italian Beef, Hot dogs and Jay's potato chips. I have been in Texas for over two decades and still nothing beats home. I am going to be honest I wouldn't normally eat Portillo's with so many other options in Illinois. But here I am missing home. This isn't bad but don't take a Chicagoan here for a replacement of their Portillo's. The hotdogs and Polish sausages are ok even if it's a little too salty. This place has gotten more efficient and our food came out quickly despite 7 people in our party. There's also 3+ kiosks to order from to ease the business. We had a pick up order of spicy chicken sandwich which came with fries and soda, and an Italian beef sandwich with hot peppers! The chicken sandwich was amazing, juicy and flavorful! However, we found the beef sandwich very mild to our taste, maybe it's supposed to be mild in nature, bot sure. But I really expected the beef sandwich to be great which it wasn't. Went here for dinner. Got a hotdog meal, an Italian beef combo sandwich, and a chocolate cake slice. The hotdog was alright, I would give it an above average. The Italian sausage and beef sandwich was a let down, both the beef and the Italian sausage were pretty bland, and there isn't very much to a combo sandwich other than that. The chocolate cake was pretty good, but it wasn't interesting in any way. The frosting tasted exactly like the Betty crocker chocolate frosting you find in the store. My last visit and review was in July 23, which involved an hour wait for a hot dog. My son and I went back today. This place used to be crazy busy with huge lines inside and at the drive through. It is calm now. Only one car in drive through at noon. Now the service is very good and the food is up to expectations for the sandwiches and fries that they offer. The company recently noted that their results have suffered because they rolled out too fast in Texas. This huge dining room is 20 percent occupied now. This is a great spot for a family visiting this giant shopping and entertainment complex. The Italian thin sliced steak sandwich is a favorite for my son. I tried the fish sandwich that was OK but had way too much mayo on it. Just a mistake in the kitchen. If you hate noisy restaurants, this on is for you. However, the cash registers are always available. If you sign up with their app, you can enter your birthday to get a Free chocolate cake. We had a great experience at Portillo's in the Colony. The kiosk ordering was convenient and everything is customizable. Another thing we noticed is that the restaurant is very clean and there were 2-3 people just walking around cleaning. I ordered the Maxwell street polish with fries and a side of giardiniera and some comeback sauce for my fries. The comeback sauce reminded me of Canes sauce- it was zesty and creamy. I hate mayo so I was afraid it would have that same consistency but it luckily did not. I'm sure it probably has mayo in it but I'm choosing to be blissfully ignorant. The Polish dog was huge and I couldn't finish it. My husband got a regular hot dog and he said he enjoyed it. The manager also stopped by our table to see how we were doing which honestly doesn't happen that much anymore so that was nice to see. I have serious doubts about returning. Ever. The beef & cheddar croissant was a mess & I'm fairly certain it wasn't on a croissant, but, rather, a regular bun with but a pinch of cheddar. Although it appears they have a register open for live orders, they now have a giant row of kiosks to remove what little human element remains. First time trying this chain and I would go back but I can't give 5 stars. First the place is very big, plenty of seating. Could have been a tad tidier by drink and ketchup areas. I got the Italian beef, dry with sweet peppers, "gravy" on the side, and I chose American cheese. Beef is tender and tasty, bread is good. I'm from NY so I can't say the bread was amazing. I kept it dry and I'm glad I did. I do not like the gravy which to me is more of au jus to me. Has a lot of room for improvement, don't hate me. It tastes like meat oil juices. To me it needs more onion and touch of garlic undertones and less oily. I wanted to love it. I then got the fries with cheese sauce, love but my fries could have been hotter, I will say I ordered pick up so that's on me. I love the cheese sauce and no it does not taste like nacho cheese it's more cheese forward which I love. I don't want nacho cheese on my fries, not in this scenario. I did get the onion rings, very good, they are crispy crunchy, and the breading stays on, and they taste good in the cheese or on their own. I then tried the chili cheese dog and unfortunately I'm not really into that hard of a snap. I prefer New York style, steamed with a steamed bun. Next time, though, I will try one of the other sausage items. Last but not least, the chocolate cake! All I will say is that I almost found myself licking the container. So simple but delicious! Came for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. I was the only person and in line and the dining area was barely full. This is a pretty big establishment with a lot of potential. Food wise- hot dog was bomb! And fries were crinkly and fresh. Lemonade and their famous chocolate cake was delicious Customer service wise- a lot of improvement to be made. There was at least 15 people on the line and no real structure. I worked fast food for 6 years and could see why people say the customer service here needs work. If you want a quiet romantic spot for a date night, this is not the place. This place is "Hi-Energy"!!! From calling your order number - the rumble of voices, kids screaming and in house music. Great place for the young kids, specifically "Grand Kids". Lots of food options, burgers, hot dogs, cheese steak sandwiches and free slice of cake on your birthday! I did think there was going to be more variety in options for hot dogs, but that's okay. The cheese fries were recommended to us by a friend. The fries were really good, the cheese was basic but went well with the fries. The sweet tea tasted a bit like mint, so I ended up asking for a Dr Pepper instead and that was better. This is a solid 3 star restaurant as the reviews show. Food was fresh, but overpriced. When dining in, they still put everything in bags, so you have to divvy everything up and eat off the paper, vs having the food laid out already. Just an odd inconvenience. Side salad was fresh. Dressings are prepackaged/typical. Burger and dogs were good, but nothing special. For the kids meal, you have to pay extra for the side and drink. I've never seen that. If you want it all, it's at least $10 for kids meal. For the price, I can think of a lot of other restaurants I want to go back to before making our way back here. read more

I am formally a Chicagoan , I love Portillo's and was happy they where opening store locations here in Texas. The food still tastes the same and the beer mugs are still frozen. The building looks the same, the service is still decent. My one complaint, Portillo's is understand everything in Texas is bigger. Unfortunately that where they run short. The portions are smaller here. My wife just went back home to visit , there the portions are normal . One more thing to mention the Chocolate cake is still heavily. Had a great beef sandwich yesterday at this location. Staff was friendly and helpful. They have kiosks u can order from or just go to counter, be aware pickles cost about $1 (I said sure when asked if I want them not realizing that-it is on their menu but I didn't see it) I also didn't get offered the gravey but after getting my sandwich asked about it and they did get us some. Some of the tables were dirty, & looked like had been that way for a whil but there are alot of tables so easy to find a clean one. Restroom was very clean. Definitely not what I expected coming to Portillo's. My family and I decided to try it out. I'm going to be as honest as possible the food was not what we expected. I ordered a double cheeseburger with Fries. My wife ordered some chicken tenders with onions rings. The burger was not that great it really just did not taste like a burger should, cheese was not even melted. The chicken tenders had so much breading it hardly had any chicken. I'm guessing people go there for the beef sandwich or hotdogs because the burgers are just not it! Maybe next time around if I'm in the area I'll give it another try for a hotdog..
