We've enjoyed many delicous plate lunches in Hawaii. A couple restaurants have come to our area claiming authentic Hawaiian food but it hasn't lived up to what we've had in Hawaii. But we decided to try this new place the The Colony. It is easy to find across hwy121 from Grandscape. It is small & a sign on door said drive through only but owner came out and said come in. There were a few tables to sit at(we got take out) and there was an open kitchen behind the counter. The cooks had no masks on but owner who helped us did. There were lots of choices and the prices were reasonable. I ordered the katsu chicken and it didn't disappoint!! It is sliced up fried panko covered boneless chicken, in Hawaii comes sitting on shredded cabbage this one had still crispy but cooked bite sized pieces of cabbage . It came with 2 scoops of plain sticky rice(I add soy sauce to mine) and one scoop of Mac salad. They included katsu sauce-a spicy ketchup which I dip my chicken in. We had a Shaka about 4 times now and I have to say this is the place to go to if you're looking for Hawaiian food. The Mac salad is amazing and the spam musubi is delicious. What a cool concept! I, personally, haven't ever heard of Hawaiian bbq! The smell that greeted me at the door was so enticing, I didn't care that it was my first time. This is a quaint, modernized restaurant located in a nice area. You are welcomed with a warm "ALOHA" upon entering and smacked in the face by fresh grill scents! My beau and I were a bit overwhelmed by the options available to us but were finally able to settle on the combo. Mine consisted of lemon pepper grilled chicken, macaroni salad, steamed rice, and a cabbage slaw. My beau got a combo of chicken and beef. The Crab Rangoon's were quite delightful as well. OK people you need to get your Hawaiian on HERE NOW!! The are a little hidden on the backside of their strip-mall building but trust me you want to find them! The best news is they are right next to Chemistry so you get get your dessert on before or after your Hawaiian dinner and you get a discount if you show your receipt from next door! As soon as we walked in and barely got to the counter the gal was running over and apologized clarly because she made us wait a whole 5 seconds and the service only got better from there!! We were handed off to one of the owner managers who we got to chat up a bit. They are very helpful explaining the options. We went with a fresh coconut milk, the Kalua plate of bbq pork and chose the bbq chicken. It comes with rice and macaroni salad and cabbage. Also tried the beef and chicken plate with the same side options. Most plates are in the $9 range and let me tell you it is a LOT of food and a very good value. The food was very tasty and if i wasn't sitting in the living room eating my to go order i would think i was back in the islands!! They have all the traditional island favorites and even have SPAM and eggs!! They have a very good selection of cans of drinks from the island as well as regular sodas. The drive through will be open soon. The restaurant is new so it is very clean and has a nice decor. My only suggestion would be to swap out the regular rock music station for some good island bands like Sammy Johnson, Kolohe Kai, J Boog, Spawnbreezie, Richard Parker and Fiji (hint hint) You have to try them out!! read more

Got to try this after seeing all the good reviews and yes I agree with all the 5* ratings. We got the seafood mix plate (fish, shrimp and chicken BBQ) and Hawaiian Mix Plate (marinated beef, chicken BBQ, pork ribs) and they were all good, perfectly marinated. The veggies that go with it are not saggy. The macaroni salad as everyone had mentioned was yummy. We had a little chat with the owner and he is awesome. He knows the business pretty well and he said he had been cooking for years. I also ordered the fresh young coconut juice and I love it. Local Hawaiian food is my Soul Food and it sure does speak to my inner fat girl! So excited to visit TX and to get a taste of Aloha that reminds me of home. Prices were good and food was yum. Menu has some good selections, but no super authentic stuff like poi, lomi lomi salmon, or laulau. We ordered the kalbi plate and also the kalua pork and bbq chicken combo plate. Both came with with a side of mac salad, scoop of rice, and cabbage. + Kalbi: nice and tender, fatty, and flavorful! + Kalua pork: Kalua pork was authentic and great with the cabbage. + BBQ chicken: Surprisingly though the chicken was the star for me. A lot of places basically just make it like a teriyaki chicken that's super saucy and see, and I'm not a fan of those. This one was not saucy, chicken itself was perfectly moist, slightly smokey, good level of salty and little hit of sweetness, and just overall delicious!! = Mac salad: yes I know it's a side, but I'm a man salad snob so I'm gonna review it too. This place opened yesterday and they seemed to be well organized for just opening. I called in an order and it was promptly ready when they said it would be. The staff was very friendly and seemed very eager to answer any questions and give good service. I got the Chicken Combo which for $9 is a steal. It came with 2 good size pieces of BBQ Chicken and a slab of Chicken Katsu accompanied with cabbage, steamed rice, and classic Mac salad (great stuff). Just went to Shaka Hawaiian BBQ and it has taken over the top spot for me for Hawaiian BBQ in the DFW area for me. I have been to only two other places here in DFW that I would consider true Hawaiian BBQ, and Shaka is doing it right. I got the Blue Plate Chicken Combo and it was amazing. There were two scoops of steamed rice, one scoop of mac salad, grilled cabbage, a huge piece of teriyaki grilled chicken and another piece of katsu chicken. My number one test of true Hawaiian BBQ is the mac salad, and it definitely passed the test. The teriyaki chicken was very flavorful and they had taken the time to get the fat off of the chicken so it was very lean but moist and full of flavor. The seasonings were right on the mark. So many Hawaiian BBQ places have really greasy chicken, but Shaka has taken care of this by paying attention to their preparation. The Katsu chicken was also cooked perfectly and had a very crispy coating to the chicken that stood up well to the sauce. Between the two types of chicken, the portion size will actually feed me for two meals which is not a bad thing and just means I get to have double the pleasure. On a service counter near the soda machine, they have small containers of extra teriyaki sauce and a large container of Katsu sauce that you can serve yourself from. Both sauces tasted great and were just the right consistency for the sauce. When we visited they had only been open for four days. We were there early for the dinner rush and were happy to see that the number of customers coming into the restaurant just continued to grow as we approached the dinner hour. Use the address for the business and then go to the west side of the building where they are located. This location allows them to have a drive through on the backside of the restaurant. You could also tell that this was a family making their dream of creating a business come true. I hope that everyone will get to try Shaka Hawaiian BBQ and become a fan because we need to keep great quality locally owned restaurants like this going and growing. read more

One day we happened to be in the area and I looked up "Hawaiin" and came upon this place. We ordered the Hawaiin combo and the chicken combo, along with their crispy fried shrimp. Everything was so delicious! The food is cooked to order and the wait can get long depending on how busy they are, but it's completely worth it! All the meats were seasoned and cooked perfectly. I'm also not a big fan of macaroni salad, but theirs is good! I also appreciate the steamed veggies that come with the meal. Their teriyaki sauce is also one of the best I have ever had! We have visited a couple of times since our first visit, and each time they did not disappoint! We enjoy their food so much we have driven all the way from North Fort Worth just to eat. My friend and I grabbed some take out from here based on the Yelp reviews. I wanted to do something that was different from the run of the mill classic Texas BBQ, tacos or Asian takeout. I've never been to Hawaii so I can't speak to the authenticity myself but my friend said it was very much like the "plates" she would get from food truck when she visited the state a few years back. I went a bit over board and got the Kalula Pork, BBQ Chicken, and BBQ shortribs. They came on a beg of cabbage with a side of macaroni salad and sticky, steamed rice. I also got crab ragoon as an appetizer. Everything was amazing. the flavors were over-the-top. Quality was very good. Nothing tasted like it was out of a bag or was pre-made. The seasoning and light glaze on the meats was good as is but the accompanying sauces were a very nice addition. Not just sweet glop, they actually had real complexity to them. A bit of spice to balance the sweetness. Not hot, just complex and thoughtfully created. It was a nice compliment to the meats. There are definitely not many Hawaiian spots around DFW, so I am grateful this one exists. They even have a drive through window which is super convenient, especially in the current times. Let me start off by saying the portions are very solid, especially for the price! Their teriyaki sauce is top notch and I pretty much dip every kind of meat in it. I grabbed the family meal last time I visited and got the chicken, fried fish, and kalua pork. The family meal is MASSIVE. I was eating this for days even sharing with roommates. Their macaroni salad is pretty good as well and complements the whole meal nicely. Their grill items like the chicken was done nicely and perfectly charred. This was delicious. I live about 20 minutes away, but I had been craving some Hawaiian BBQ since I moved back into town. The only other place I knew was near Downtown and I was not about to drive that far. I had the Chicken Combo and it was amazing. The steamed cabbage underneath the chicken was soft, but still had a bite to it and was soaked in the chicken juice. It was almost like having chips. The chicken katsu was tender and crispy (even after the drive) and the BBQ chicken was so flavorful. The macaroni was cool and evened out the dish so well! We also had the spam musubi (two giant honkin' pieces of spam and rice wrapped in laver) and the fried shrimp. The fried shrimp was a little over-priced, IMO (around $7.50 for 6 pieces), but was really good and nicely cooked (not too much to be rubbery, and not too little to be mushy).
