Good burger joint, just like the other Shake Shacks. The bread is soft and fresh, the patty cooked just right with lettuce and tomato. Their mushroom burger is my favorite, it oozes with melted cheese inside a large portobello mushroom all breaded and fried together for some crunchy goodness. I guess it's the "healthy" alternative but gets your heart pumping. Crinkles fries are good. I love how they have tables outside for customers to sit. read more

BEST FAST FOOD BURGER I HAVE EVER TASTED! why does this place only have 3.5 stars? no idea. in my book, it's the best tasting beef patty and cheese melt combination anyone can turn up In a kitchen. you can truly taste the freshness of the ingredients with every bite! plus this particular one can't be at a better location. if there is a line, it moves pretty swiftly and there is plenty of seating. if you only want shakes or custard, there is an express line just for you. what else can you ask for?! (plus....seriously go check out the postal museum next door, it's awesome..and I just totally came up with a weekend date idea for you.) I'm from the west coast and we have in n out, but let me just say that the east coast shake shack has just beaten out my beloved in n out. delicious! I'm focusing my review mostly on the space and service given hopefully your familiarity with Shake Shack. Don't get me wrong, the cheeseburger, fries, and shake were all good. This Shake Shack has a prime location, even for Union Station. The seating is great to either people watch toward the patio-like seating or balcony-like seating or enjoy a more private experience inside. I would personally recommend the patio or balcony. Staff was friendly and efficient with our order and everything was correct. Additionally, everything appeared well kept and clean. I've eaten at the Dupont Circle location a few times, so I knew what to expect (and am always very tempted by those shakes and custard, as well as the beer and wine lists). But I resisted and settled on a double shackburger, their classic/basic burger. Very good, as usual, with a hint of searing/char on the outside of the patties, perfect doneness inside. This location has seating on the lower level (where the counter is), more upstairs, as well as a seating area in Union Station. Entrances on both sides, from the street and from the station. I did not like the unnecessary attitude I was given when I was ordering. It was my first time and the lady taking my order was rude and sarcastic. When we went back for sauce we didn't know the sizes so we asked for 4 honey mustard to share between our family of 5. The same lady says "that's a lot of sauce for just two fries." Rolling her eyes. Service was good and line control was good but they didn't tell me the shroom burger would take so long (or else I would have gone somewhere else). Every location varies but the shroom burger here was...not good. Watery cheese and really hard mushroom. I don't know, maybe it was because it was just fried? I've been to different Shake Shack locations in the DC area, and the food here is consistent. Soft burgers, fresh fixings, and saucy. My usual is the ShackBurger. Service is slow at this location. One thing worth noting is that on the second floor, they have table games that you can play, like shuffleboard... this isn't a bad place to hang out at if you've got some time to spend at Union Station. read more

I love shake shack but you can't have it too often for so many reasons. First off, I'd hate to know what the calorie count is per burger; single or double. Once I was introduced to the smoke shack, it was hard to order anything else. The hot relish on the sandwich takes the taste to the next level. I love shake shack so much, I started to come here once a week... and then I started to get sick lol. That's one reason I can't give this place 5 stars. That has never happened to me at any other restaurant. The other reason is, is kind of expensive. Everything is a la carte. The cheese fries are good but also expensive. The food and milkshakes are deeply satisfying, with everything exactly as crispy/salty/cheesy/tangy/spicy what have you as it ought to be. Their unique beer/wine offering, quality shakes, neat meat-and-mushroom and chicago dog options, etc, are all a huge plus. This location unfortunately gets three stars because the lunchtime wait times are beyond the realm of the reasonable for a person with a busy schedule -- and on several occasions they've flat out forgotten my order and I've had to go back after like 25 minutes, late for a meeting with buzzer in hand and everyone near me in line gone, only to have them have to rush to make it right then because it clearly fell through the cracks. read more

This was one of the things we had to try when we reached the east coast because this is where it originated from. The hype is real. Meaning.. its all HYPE. I'm not digressing Shake Shack. No. This place is good. It's unique. I'll say it's better than most burger joints because of that. Also, you cannot turn away that Shroom Burger that everyone loves: its ooey and gooey, that is if this is your sort of thing. The food left me good and full I have to say. But sadly it did leave me hanging wanting a bit more... something was really missing :( Of all the locations we tried, we went to one of the busier ones: in Union Station. We were unfortunate to order during peak times and the wait was somewhat unbearable but the food made up for it. This is all I will have to say. Will I eat it again? Maybe. Am I craving it now? Finally got a chance to visit being I'm from the west coast. Have had In n' Out and Five Guys, but I think Shake Shack might give this a run for the money. Double smoke shack, fries, and a black and white shake were amazing after running a race. Fries were crinkle cut, the burger full of flavor, bacon, and red cherry peppers. Doesn't hurt that they Bree their own beers, serve wine and rotate the shakes throughout the month. Well done! read more

I've heard ravings about this place. However, i've tried this a couple times and finally sat down the write a review. The burger. By itself, it was quite tasty for a mass produced burger. I call burgers mass produced if they do not cook to preferred temperature. However at 10 bucks for the double shack burger by itself, its pretty pricey considering a tasty burger at cheesecake factory is 12.99 with fries is a far better quality at the dame price. a complaint i have with this particular location is their iced tea. I've attached a photo. This is a very light iced tea. It taste like water and it looks watered down. I asked about the iced tea and their answer was "oh, we brew it light". We walked in knowing there were a variety of restaurants but one student asked to go to Shake Shack. So glad we did! What a great display of hospitality! One of my kids said I wonder why they are all so nice! First time at Shake Shack. Not a big burger eater, but I'm pregnant and the baby was begging for a cheeseburger. I ordered a single cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato, no shake sauce, with a side of cheese fries. Three details that I really appreciated: 1. The bun was toasted 2. The bun was connected on one side so it did not get messy. 3. They gave me a little fork for the fries so my fingers didn't get greasy. 3b. I could then use said fork to put the perfect amount of ketchup on the bite of burger I was going to take. I did not get a shake, but they had Abita root beer on tap which was a nice touch. And they had these nicely portioned organic sodas because 10.5 oz is all the fizz I'm interested in. All in all, great experience and will gladly go back. read more

So I came here half way through a 25 mile bike ride to and through DC on the 4th of July because I was STARVING! I had a 'Shroom Burger, a bag of Crab Chips, and a Diet Coke. So shame on me for not realizing that I had just order an almost-500 calorie deep fried portobello mushroom that was stuffed with muenster cheese. It was okay. Couldn't taste the mushroom part of the burger at all because it was simply too small and the muenster cheese just overpowered everything. The chips were so salty it was crazy. I mean, I know they are potato chips and they aren't Shake Shack-branded, but OMG they were salty. Service was about as expected considering it was 4th of July and crowded. My only complaint was that my pager went off a full five minutes before I could actually pick up my food, but it was so crowded there. The lady at the counter was really nice though, so it's all good. I will say this though, all the trash cans upstairs was literally overflowing and spilling out onto the floor. Kind gross. On the quiet Sunday of my travel, there were so few people in line that the manager and staff had time to emerge from behind the counter in order to clear tables and check on customers. The burger (SmokeShack) was absolutely delicious, as was the peanut butter (!) shake. It wasn't as juicy as 5 Guys, but wasn't bone dry either. A little more juice would have been better, but I'm glad it wasn't "dripping down my fingers" juicy. The shake was thick - my burger and fries were gone before I could get it through the straw. Fries were ok, but nothing special. The wait to get my meal wasn't bad for how busy it was (but I wasn't expecting so many people at 8:30 on a Wednesday night). I thought the prices were a bit steep for the portion sizes - I paid 3X what a similar meal would have cost at McDonald's, but the portions were smaller and the wait was longer. Solid burger. Solid shake. Very busy location. This place is located on the first floor of union station. They are quite efficient and readily handles big tour groups. I had the shake shack burger which is a cheese burger. It was good and the quality of meat/produce made it tasty. They are known for their crinkle fries and they are good. BRITTNEY the hostess said "actually you already passed the menu but here it is anyway". This is rude for me because she could have just given me the menu and be done with it. I can't bear to write a long review because I am still feeling the shame of falling off the veggie wagon by eating here the other day. I couldn't help it. We had had a big event the night before, the hangover had me fully in its grips, and it had been almost three years or more since my first and last trip to Shake Shack. Unlike their other locations, I could actually see both the front and the end of the line of people waiting to order. Until now, the biggest obstacle to eating here was my unwillingness to wait over a half an hour or more on a line. But alas, despite it being lunch time, the line was only 5 minutes long... so I caved. One double Smoke Shack, please. This masterpiece is a classic Shack Burger, minus the lettuce and tomato, but with the addition of cherry pepper relish and Niman Ranch applewood smoked bacon. Cheesy, ooey-gooey deliciousness with just the right amount of salty, tangy, sweet flavors all mixing together. The beef, courtesy of the King of all meats, Pat LaFrieda, is cooked perfectly, with an excellent char and crunch on the outside. Simply stated: This may very well be the best burger on the planet right now. Hopefully I won't be back too soon. read more

Probably the best food I ate in D.C. if that tells you anything. I stopped at the Union Station Shake Shack because I had to try the Shack Stack. It's the cheeseburger AND shroom burger together. I also ordered the cheese fries, topped with a "special blend of American and cheddar cheese sauce." The Shack Stack is amazing and delicious in every way imaginable. I was careful not to burn myself on the shroom and I didn't. Fries were meh.. they were like fries you get at a concert or football stadium, I'd suggest you just skip the fries and get two Shack Stacks! I never thought Union Station would be home to two of my favorite burgers in DC, but then Shake Shack arrived on the scene and changed the game. I fell in love with Bold Bite down in the Food Court last year, but when I heard that there was a Shake Shack in Union Station I had to give them a try. Shake Shack gets much fanfare for their burgers and the line for the one at Nats Park is always insanely long. But I had gone far too long without trying their insanely yummy sounding Shack Stack and couldn't pass up the chance. The Shack Stack is their ShackBurger (standard cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and special sauce) combined with their 'Shroom Burger, which is a portobello cap stuff with cheese, breaded and fried. So yes, you get a cheeseburger with a huge fried stuff portabollo on top. This is one messy, delicious, awesome burger. They serve it with a "warning" for the portobollo cap, which pops and oozes delicious cheese once you bit into it. I ruined the dress shirt I was wearing, but no matter - I'm happy to chalk that one up to the food gods for this awesome burger. The combo of the portobello cap and Shake Shack's excellent cheeseburger is heavenly. They also feature a couple of craft beers on tap from Brooklyn Brewery, including their exclusive "Shackmeister Ale" brewed exclusively for Shake Shack by Brooklyn. It was a decent pale ale, and helped wash the burger down nicely. Now I have a true dilemma when I visit Union Station ... Bold Bite or Shake Stack?
