I called the Union Station store and tried to resolve the issue but no one answers directly and when you follow the prompt to speak to a manager, their "message quota" is at capacity. How does someone get a mobile order resolved when something goes wrong? Not a fan of Shake Shack. Let's see if this gets someone's attention because I'm owed $37.54. Bottom Line: A little chaotic and perhaps lacking in service but a darn good cheeseburger. I'm not sure what makes Shake Shack's signature burger, the Shack Burger, so good but I really enjoy it. You can get a multiple patty burger but I always stick with the single and find the meat is savory, the tomatoes juicy, the lettuce crisp and the cheese melty. Yum. I'm not a fan of the crinkle cut fries so I skip those but I'm sure others will enjoy the fries and other menu items like hot dogs, shakes, soda, wine and beer. Shake Shack came to the LA area a few years ago. I remember going to the West Hollywood when it first opened and was super impressed. Since then I've been to several in the LA area and even one in Milwaukee but this DC location is the first time I went with double patties and double cheese. And excuse me for speaking Californian but this burger was no In-N-Out Double Double! I never thought I would say this but it was way too much cheese and way too much meat. The burger was just too much period. Fries were fine as was the service. But the best thing about this location was the location. Sitting on the outer area of the restaurant and being able to people watch and admire the architecture of the train station is pretty epic. Maybe next time I'm in DC, I'll give this location another chance but I'll make sure to stick to a single patty. read more

Not impressed. We were waiting for a our tour to begin and we decided to have dinner while we waited. SS is right on the left hand side once you enter Union Station. Super convenient, but if it is a busy weekend or just plain busy, be prepared to wait. There is a small dining area downstairs, but if you go upstairs, there are some additional seating (there is an elevator available too). The bathroom is also upstairs and the code to get into the bathroom is on your receipt; otherwise the public restrooms are in the station (women's at Gate G). I made a mistake in ordering a Shroom burger thinking it was a burger with mushrooms on top. NOPE, it's an actual portabella mushroom deep friend that looks like a burger. GRRR, silly me, I didn't read the menu correctly. The burger was ehhh but then again I'm a meat eater. I begged my husband to buy me another cheeseburger in which he did. The cheeseburger was just OK to me. Nothing special in my opinion. The crinkle cut fries were excellent though and I enjoyed them. Super crispy! All the condiments are downstairs (non upstairs) as well as drinks/ refill. You have to ask for refills behind the counter. Updated Review: I wrote my earlier review of this place after only a handful of visits. After more than two years of coming here it is now due an update and upgrade in the number of stars awarded. The burger is so elegantly simple: high quality beef, soft bun, tasty cheese, fresh toppings, all served along crinkle cut fries. Never too thick or too messy, it is what I imagine burgers tasted like at old-timey joints that had car-hops and fresh ground mid-western beef burgers. The crust formed on the flattop grilled burger is perfect. The beef-to-fat ratio feels on point and the flattop allows for a juicy patty that is addictive. The cheese puts the burger over the top. I am not sure what is in shack sauce but it absolutely compliments the burger. I do add ketchup (because...well it's ketchup) and a touch of mustard which adds tanginess to compliment the savoriness of the beef. I need to do a real-time comparison between Shake Shack, Five Guys, and In and Out. Those are my favorite burgers in this genre (yes there are various genres of burgers: greasy spoons like a corner carry-out; Fast food like Wendy's of McD's; quick serve to order like here; causal sit down like Red Robin; traditional restaurants; and high end gourmet). The beef taste like the cows were fed a vegetarian (grasses) based diet. The irony is that as I eat the burger, the cows from which it is produced had a more healthy diet than me. On to the fries. Crinkle cut. Crispy. Golden. Perfect for that genre of French Fry. The cheese sauce, similar to or might be a béchamel sauce, is worth the extra calories. A dip in the cheese then a dip in Heinz ketchups the perfect bite to me. Would that they made a macaroni and cheese out of that sauce! Pretty please just develop it and give me a shoutout in the description. Shake Shack has so many reviews and such a loyal following that I want to make sure I add some value for the Yelp community in this review. If the often long lines make you avoid this place just download the App. I place and pay for my order in the app. The app allows for full customizations and a real-time look at how those customizations effect calorie counts and the overall price. Once the order is submitted in the app, I get an estimate of the time it will be ready and finally a text when the order is ready for pickup. I breeze right past the queue of non-appers directly to the pickup counter without breaking stride. If you are like me your order rarely varies, thus, the save order feature in the app save so much time as I can order with the press of one button. The perfect arrangement. I was heading home to the Philadelphia area after a quick trip to Washington and decided to stop off at the Shake Shack in Union Station to get a quick bite to eat. I ordered up at the counter and I decided to go with a hamburger with tomatoes and a side of French fries. I was given a buzzer and a took a seat. This Shake Shack has plenty of available seating and I easily found a seat even though the restaurant was fairly crowded. My buzzer went off after about a short 5 minutes of waiting. My burger was a bit on the smaller size, but I did appreciate how fresh the tomato was and how tasty the French fries were. The French fries were nice and crispy with a nice, thick amount of potato. The burger itself was very tasty and the burger was nicely grilled. Finally, I decided to go back later and order the Washington Monument concrete. I elected to go with one scoops, but it did end up seeking rather small. The concrete was made with chocolate ice cream and filled with soft and flavorful chocolate-mint balls. This is the first Shake Shack that I have been to that serves breakfast? Unless I have been oblivious and didn't look through the menu thoroughly at other locations.... Unfortunately I came in the afternoon so I got my usual, the Shake Stack with a side of their delicious crinkle cut fries! I also ordered the Washington Monu-Mint Concrete. The food here is comparable to other locations, DELICIOUS! The Washington Monu-Mint has chocolate custard, minted marshmallow sauce and chocolate truffle cookie dough. I am usually not a fan of mint flavored sweets, but the minted marshmallow sauce is subtle. If you love cookie dough ice cream, you def need to try this! This location has tons of seating available, there are two floors. On the second floor there is even a foosball table! I came here with a friend on a Sunday afternoon and we were able to find seating immediately... it was super cold outside so not many people were out and about in the city as usual. I would predict that this spot gets pretty packed normally because it seems like a great spot to kill time if you are waiting for the train, metro, etc. The staff were all friendly and the restaurant itself was very clean. The staff here would go from table to table and offer to cleanup after guests. There's no Shake Shack in Hawaii. This is one those Hawaii people's to go place when they visit the states. I ordered the regular burger with some zigzag fries. The meat was juicy and good while I was eating it. But it took awhile for it to go down. Also, the price was higher than their competitor for a regular burger. I'm going to attempt to keep this short and sweet. Not something easy if you read my reviews. This location is by the Spy Museum and across the street from the Portrait Gallery. It most likely is there busiest DC store. Parking is either off street, parking garage, or nearby valet from one of the hotels on the block. I recently enjoyed them for my second time and made a point to bring my son with a friend this time around. First visit was stronger than the first. But also the second visit was much more mobbed. Go in stand in line and look at the menu boards then proceed to the cash register. No combo's so it gets real like quick on the total. Burgers are around $7.50, shakes around $5.50, so you get it. The employees on both occasions were super friendly, smiled and really seemed to care about there job. Service was impressive, I will leave at that. No issues either time on checkout where you get a buzzer to come to counter for your food. Condiments, napkins etc. are in an are that is in front of the checkout. Both visits had more debris than I would like on the floor. Both times dirty tables as well. The place is always busy, there seems to be no down time. So the only way possible to stay on top is having a staff designated to remain in the dining room. They don't do that and I never saw anyone cleaning. Food was out quickly both times, like within 10 minutes, or so. Order were correct and checked over before being turned over to me. The burgers and shakes are downright delicious. This time I got my burger with shack sauce. I also got a coffee based shake which was super yum! The deduction in rating is is twofold. They are not keeping the dining room clean. This is from two visits. They push the price point too far for what is provided. Its good, but is it that good...? NO! It's something special for out of town folks because they are still a smaller chain. I would go back in a heart beat! But if I had one in my town I would not be a regular with prices far exceeding other burger/shake joints. As well parking is nightmarish if not on foot then you better really want it bad. This is located in the Union Station & it is pretty busy, but the staff are very efficient, they keep their cool & give good service. The restaurant is surprising clean since it is in a busy area. Since, it was my first time at Shake Shack, I got the classic burger & asked the cashier which shake to try. She told me to get strawberry since it is a classic. Strawberry it is! Moving to DC made me fall in love with hamburgers. Places like Good Stuff Eatery, Ray's Hellburger, and even Five Guys prove to me burgers are an amazing food. After 7.5 years living in the city of great burger, my visit to Shake Shack made me realize DC raised my burger bar. There really is nothing special about Shake Shack. The burgers are overpriced and subpar. They are small and even the fries aren't that good at all (lacking flavor). I've heard nothing but great things about Shake Shacks for years and this was the first time I came across one where the line wasn't crazy. I'm not sure this location is like the others, but the line moved quickly and we got our orders in after just a couple minutes in line. I ordered the Smoke Shack burger, fries, and a chocolate shake and it was pretty pricey at $17. Waited five or six minutes for our food and went upstairs to eat. The burger was good, but I've had many others that were the same or better...I don't think I really liked the sauce. The Kringle cut fries were good, but nothing special. The shake however was GREAT. I'm Keats a fan of a shake you need a spoon to eat! I'd like to give this place another shot sometime. The chicken shack is my favorite thing here, the mayo and batter on the chicken really set it apart from other chicken sandwiches. First encounter with this brand was FIVE STARS! I ordered the Shack Stack, really not understanding what I ordered. I was pleasantly surprised. I got a tremendous cheeseburger topped with what appeared to be a deep fried portobello mushroom. They do a great job with a bun sturdy enough to hold up to their toppings, and they do not waste any effort trying to build the world's largest. What it seems they do here is get a bit creative on their menu whilst packing a wallop into a moderately sized burger. I also ordered the peanut butter shake and lemonade. Five stars to me means the entire experience exceeded expectations, and it did. The employees were the friendliest we found in DC. The food was reasonably priced, and the joint was exceptionally clean. After we ventured out from this location into the rest of Union Station (we had three hours to kill), it became even more apparent how well run the Shake Shack is. This is the kind of place, like In-N-Out, that I will actively seek out in the future. Not sure it was worth it. We both had the standard ShackBurger® - Single or Double Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato, ShackSauce™. I would say it was a decent burger but nothing special. I prefer Five Guys burger flavor and topping options. I did love the Fries - Crispy, crunchy, salty potato-y goodness! I love that they are crinkle fries over regular fries. Oh Shake Shack, how I love thee. Where I'm from, there are no shake shacks (very sad). So when I discovered a plethora of Shake Shakes in D.C., I was beyond ecstatic! My husband and I even shared a large shake and fries as an "appetizer" so to speak, before going out to dinner with a friend that night. That's not frowned upon at all right? Of course not. I LOVE their concretes. They are simply thick ice cream shakes as opposed to a milky shake. I just wish they had more flavors for concretes. The Washington Monu-mint (cleverly named) was my favorite. I've seen the Shake Shack lines when we've been in NYC so we were looking forward to trying Shake Shack while we waited for our evening monument tour out of Union Station. This location had a large dining area on two floors which can accommodate a fair number of diners but they only had two cashiers which seemed odd. Fortunately when we got in line there was just a group of about 5 in front of us so the wait wasn't too bad but I'll get to that later. Food: We ordered two SmokeShack burgers (one single and one double). The burger itself was was pretty good (6.5 out of 10) and addition of the bacon really added to the flavor and texture. We tossed the bun since we're doing keto (also had to skp the fries and shakes unfortunately) but the double was filling enough to last me the next few hours out in the Washington evening. Taste wise it was a pretty good burger. They also had a good selection of beer and wine that you don't get with In-n-Out! Service: This is where the experience went south for us. First of all, there is a menu on the wall as you wait to order but no menu when you step up to the counter. For customers that are unfamiliar with names of the menu items, it's a bit difficult to recall the menu item names that you saw on the wall. Not sure if all SS are setup like this, we did see some plastic menus across the menu wall and perhaps we were supposed to bring one of those up with us. Second issue was with the order taker/cashier. First of we were waiting behind the group of 5 who were placing the order, the second cashier made no attempt to get our attention to step around the group to order, in fact he was just staring off into space. One of the patrons in front of us pointed out the second cashier or we would have just kept waiting. I realize that it's probably not a high paying position but when we step up, the cashier just stared at us..no "welcome to Shake Shack" or "What can I get for you". He pretty much looked at us like we were an inconvenience. Being unfamiliar with the menu names again, I asked if SmokeShacks was the correct name for the burger with bacon and he just stares at me, no response, in fact I was wondering if he even realized that I was standing there wanting to place an order. Getting no response I figured it must be the correct name so I tell him two Smokeshacks, one beer, one glass of wine (wife standing next to me). He rings up the order and gives us a pager and receipt. We move off to the side and are waiting for our order when I look at the receipt, he only entered an order for a single burger...now I have to get back in line which has now grown and order again. I get the same cashier again with pretty much the same experience. Maybe he was tired, I don't know but i'd zero star for customer service. Atmosphere: It was okay with a small dining area downstairs. My wife had just finished the Marine Corp Marathon the previous day and wasn't looking forward to tackling the stairs. Unfortunately you had to call a staff member to allow you to use the elevator and based on our ordering experience I was not looking forward to calling them twice (once for up, once for down). Luckily a table opened up downstairs so we did not have to venture above. Value: The prices were fine as the ingredients were quality. I've heard some criticism in the past from others saying it's overpriced. The food was up to par, the rest of the experience was not. Overall: Two burgers and two drinks ran us around $30, I'd rather pay a bit more for a better customer service experience but maybe that's just how these operate. Rude employees. Poor service. Dirty condiment area. I stopped here to pick up a take out burger and fries for dinner. When I arrived, there was one person ahead of me and two people waiting on orders. I ordered a plain cheeseburger, fries and a coke. I saw my burger come off the grill and placed on the shelf where it sat for 15 minutes getting cold. There were at least six employees behind the counter, but only three appeared to be actually working. After seeing my burger sit for 10 minutes, I mentioned to one of the employees that if that was my burger, I wanted a new one cooked that would be hot because it had been sitting getting cold. He heard me, looked at me, didn't say anything and walked away to start shooting the bull with another employee. When someone finally decided to assemble my order after 15 minutes, I again said I wanted a hot burger. I was mocked by the girls behind the counter. I again said I didn't want a cold burger and a guy who said he was the manager said "so do you want a refund?" Me: "no, I just want a hot meal." He tells me if I want a new burger, I'll have to wait 15 minutes. He then throws my fries into a bag and sets it aside to sit and get cold for 15 minutes while I wait on the new burger. I at this point start to lose it and he tells me he'll get a new burger. I get my "new" burger and like an idiot I don't check it immediately. When I got home a few minutes later, I discovered that my burger was ice cold. They took the cold burger I had refused from behind the counter, shoved it in a box instead of the white paper envelope and gave it back to me. So I ended up with a cold burger, fries that were hot, but tasted like old oil and a medium Coke for almost $17.00. I live in DC. I go through Union Station every day. Maybe the employees just assume you can be really crappy to tourists because they won't he back, but some folks actually live and work downtown and won't go back to patronize restaurants with crappy food and/or service.
