The apple pie and zucchini bread are pretty mediocre to be quite honest. Zucchini bread had every zucchini piece at the bottom of the loaf. you know they added zucchini but i wish it was more spread out and not just a bomb of moist bottom slice slobs over your face. know what i mean?! Well check out the photo The apple pie was lack luster too. The filling reminded me of grade school apple sauce. It wasnt too sweet and it didnt have much flavor really. I decided to stop by Shakers on my way home from a client meeting. This place was recommended to me by a friend. I was craving something sweet. I was greeted by the hostess Abby and asked her for a recommendation that I could take to go with me. She suggested a milkshake or a slice of pie. I decided to try the chocolate shake since I knew I was going to be in traffic for a while and it sounded good. As she was preparing my shake, I noticed the menu on the wall and I made a mental note to come and have a sit down meal next time I am in the area. From my perspective it looks like there is plenty of seating including an outdoor patio. After a couple of minutes Abby presented me with my to go milkshake with a smile. We love this little restaurant and the staff are always wonderful. We used to always buy a full pie and they would let us eat two pieces of it and take the rest home. There was a little charge for serving but that was no big deal. The new general manager ended that service much to our surprise. You can either buy the whole pie and leave or buy it by the slice. This makes it more expensive if you want to take some home $36.00 vs $28.99. So sad managers find a way to make more money and alienate customers. read more

I had not been to shakers in quite some time. I was so happy to see the menu was just about the same as diner on Main, which was a favorite breakfast spot of mine. Great experience overall here at Shakers. I was a little nervous based on some of the reviews, but none of my worries panned out at this vintage 80s-ish feel restaurant. We came here on Christmas Eve day after church as a party of 7 and waited no more than ten minutes for a table. Our waitress was extremely prompt and friendly, and food came out within 15 minutes of ordering. Our variety of breakfast dishes were all solid. Not necessarily something to write home about, but decent egg dishes, pancakes, etc - great for a big group with kids, although IMO a touch or two overpriced for some (but not all) of the portions. Pancakes fluffy but a bit chewy. Again, super fast service with ordering, coffee refills, and the check. Shakers is a favorite because it reminds me of being a kid in Los Angeles. There were a ton of these places: huge counters, great big booths, funky architecture and predictably good food. Today I got a burger and fries which I think is a pretty good measure of a coffee shop. It was relatively inexpensive and a whole lot better than anything you'd get at a fast food place. My mom had the potato soup which she really liked, and while walking out I saw the quiche which I'll definitely be ordering next time. The wait staff is fast and friendly, and the food comes out quickly. I would call it "comfort food". Open since 1971 and I don't think they're going anywhere anytime soon! read more

Been to Shakers before but this time was a little dissapointed. I decided to order their Chicken Pot Pie for the first time. My first impression that this is not a pot pie, all I see is the top crust, no bottom crust. Then I tasted the gravy which needs a bit of seasoning and the worst is that the chicken was VERY chewy. I literally only ate the crust and a few spoonful of the veggies and gravy. Our server (Jay, I think) was very accomodating but I was very hungry and I didn't want another meal to be created and wait. I was looking forward to a nice "home comfort" meal but it was dissapointing. In the end Jay has went above and beyond to discount my meal which I did not ask for but I appreciated it. I was seated very fast. That's about the only positive aspect of my dining experience. I ordered the Patty melt without the sauce. 20 minutes after I ordered, my food finally arrived. The food was hot, however, you guessed it. My patty melt came with the sauce. I told the waitress and she took it back without a comment.Ten minutes later I got my food. This review is based on a Zucchini Bread purchase only. I did not dine in nor did I take out any food from Shakers. My mom and I was driving down Fair Oaks to head home from shopping the other day and she told me that Shaker's Zucchini Bread is really good. I remembered what she said and decided to go get one for her. Fair Oaks Avenue is a very busy street with heavy traffic and making turns here with no light is very difficult. I had to make a left turn to drive into the parking lot and that alone took awhile with so many cars on the road. But finding a parking space was easy peasy. I went inside and right by the entrance, I saw loaves of Zucchini Bread for sale. They come in 2 different sizes; regular and large. I bought the regular one for $5.50 plus tax. The guy at the register was very annoying. I was looking at the loaves and its prices, and he said 'can I help you' in a very unpleasant way. He didnt even say hi when I walked in. I told him I'm just going to get the bread and he didnt say nothing. I paid and left with the bread but even during paying process, this guy was unfriendly and unprofessional. He was slow and didnt bother to say thank you. Its just his attitude was off. His actions showed that he did not want to deal with me. That was a big turn off. My Mom loves the bread and I took a bite and is just OK but I cannot get over how unfriendly the guy was. I wish he'd be more friendly and smiling at least. read more

Driving Mom to doctor's appointment and decided to stop by Shakers before appointment. What a surprise, we both ordered Fish Sandwich which was grilled Pacific Sole on toasted sour dough bread. The fish was perfectly grilled fresh and moist. Generous amount of fish with lettuce and tomato. Along with fresh hot french fries, cole slaw and a side of chicken rice soup. We LOVED IT. So much, we went back a week later and ordered it again! I loved the service and the personal customer touch. Many customers are regulars there and i know why! Have tried Shakers for breakfast/brunch a few times, and I keep coming back! 4 stars! Shakers is owned by the same people as The Diner on Main (Alhambra), Canoe House (South Pasadena), and Central Park (Pasadena). Out of the three, Shakers is most similar to The Diner on Main, but bigger with way better food and much more selections! It's definitely not as fancy as Central Park, and it's way too casual when compared to Canoe House. The combination breakfast plates are always a good value at Shakers, ranging in price from $8 to $10. The Fritata Florentine Omelette at $10.50 as well as the Breakfast Quesadilla at $9.95 are also very good choices. So far, I've never been disappointed with any of my breakfast/brunch choices at Shakers. Pretty big portions and pretty yummy. Also, definitely more breakfast/brunch choices than The Diner on Main! Service has always been attentive and friendly at Shakers. There's also pretty big parking lot so parking has never been an issue. Also, the same delicious zucchini bread (now in small and large sizes) is also offered by the register like at The Diner on Main. Why just 4 stars then? This is a really great neighborhood restaurant, especially good at breakfast. There are many regulars that go here for the excellent food and service. We love to ask for table service with their waitress, Ashley. She is quick, friendly and works so hard. She always makes us laugh and brightens our day. Fair warning, weekend breakfasts are popular, so you'll find the large off street parking lot busy. The blueberry pancakes are light and delicious as well as Eggs Benedict (only served on weekend.) First time visiting and was pleasantly surprised! The booth I must admit was a bit uncomfortable for a shorter person like myself. My feet didn't touch floor and the tilt to the seat had my rear lower than my knees and hard to lean forward. So I was prepared to not enjoy my meal as just sitting was odd. The Side salad was a good size and more than just some iceberg lettuce! Even some radish in there! and The generous amount of blue cheese dressing served on the side was perfect. Nice and chunky with real blue cheese in it! enough for the salad and some to dip onion rings or sandwich in if I wanted to! I was so happy to hear the waitress ask how would you like your burger as just a few days before at a different chain dinner I was told I could not have my burger med. as all burgers would be served Well Done (????) no idea why they made that choice but I won't be back there any time soon. The onion rings where just the right amount of golden brown and crispy server hot but not so hot you burn your mouth but not cold and soggy! Perfect for dipping in that extra blue cheese dressing. The patty melt was tasty with a nice tangy sauce on it and I had mine with swiss instead of cheddar at no extra charge! IDK why Shaker's is only getting a 3.5 star rating...makes absolutely no sense! This place was fantastic. Ended up being quite early for our appointment to take our kiddo to Kid's Space Museum so we decided to get breakfast/brunch first. My wife found Shaker's randomly from a Google search so we decided to give it a try as they offered a kid's menu (a top priority for families with kids). Our kiddo ordered eggs (scrambled) & bacon w/side of fruit (her choice as she could have had hashbrowns) and OJ. Standard fare and nothing to write home about here. Wife ordered the quiche Lorraine which was sublime. Most places offer a wet/undercooked/slimy frittata as a quiche which is absolutely wrong! Or the opposite -- an overly cooked and dry frittata as a quiche. Not Shaker's! The quiche here was sublime and creamy with an amazing pastry crust that was oh so buttery and flaky. Had it been any flakier, it would've needed some Head & Shoulders dandruff shampoo! I ordered the Chicken Fried steak which was served on top of their home made biscuits and smothered in their country gravy. Let me say that I HATE country gravy -- I misread the menu and assumed that I was getting regular gravy so when my plate came out, I was more than ready to scrape the country gravy off to the side but tried it...and I was surprised and delighted at the fact that this place can make country gravy without having it taste like burnt flour!!!!!!! (This is my main reason for hating country gravy as most places just dump in the flour as the cook is too impatient to gently sift it it and thus ends up burning the critical ingredient for the gravy!) And then the biscuit -- it wasn't the best biscuit that I've ever had but it was definitely in the Top 5 (two of my top 5 biscuits are from Louisiana and Atlanta). Flaky, airy, yet good density, pillowy softness with that great buttery flavory. Finally, the chicken fried steak -- the meat was tenderized perfectly so it was super tender (and not stringy even though it was a cheap cut of meat which chicken fried steak is) and the coating was nice and crispy (not crunchy but crispy). Oil was clean as the batter didn't feel greasy at all! If I have to nitpick about anything on this breakfast review, it's the coffee...no, the coffee is NOT bad. It's just that the coffee was not mind-blowing like the food. So it's probably an unfair comparison...but as I just mentioned, that's with me really just nitpicking. It's good coffee compared to lots of other places. Oh, our server was fantastic and provided excellent service and was on top of refilling/refreshing our coffee without having to be flagged down. I also liked the fact that you could use your smartphone to scan the QR code on the receipt and just literally 'Pay-n-Go' instead of having to wait at the register to pay. The system that Shaker's uses is really slick and easy! This was just the cherry on top of an already fantastic meal experience. It was the first time that she's ever had a 'real' milkshake (she's used to fast food milkshakes in a cup) so she commented on how pretty the whip cream was and was fascinated with the maraschino cherry on top. She loved it and wished it came w/more cherries. My wife ordered the Chicken Pot Pie and I was lucky to get a few bites to try. It was a warm blanket of comforty goodness! The flaky pie crust was so good and there was plenty of chicken, mushrooms, peas and carrots. The only thing that would've made the chicken pot pie tastier would have been if it had been cold and rainy outside! I opted for the pot roast melt sandwich and if there is such a thing as a perfect hot sandwich, I think I found it! The pot roast was super succulent and soft, the caramelized onions were just sweet perfection (literally - the sweetness was amazing), the jack cheese was gooey and melty which was perfectly complimented by the crunchy and buttery sourdough toast that bookended the whole concoction perfectly! (You notice how many times I used the word 'perfect' here in this paragraph?) The sandwich also comes with fries but I subbed/upgrade the standard fries to sweet potato fries.
