I was in the mood for Trinidadian food, and I wanted to try a place I haven't been to. I scrolled down my bookmark list and decided to check out Shalama's Roti Shop along State Rd. 7. The Village Plaza, where the roti shop was located, looked like it had seen better days with a few empty business spaces. Shalama's Roti Shop offers traditional Trinidadian food items such as roti (chicken, vegetable, beef), doubles, phoulorie, aloo pie, and much more at reasonable prices. I greeted a male employee who took my order of stew chicken, one double with tamarind sauce and cucumber chutney, and one dhalpourie roti. My food was given to me within a few minutes. I started with the double which was delicious. The barra had a nice texture as it was filled with curried channa, complemented by the tamarind sauce and cucumber chutney. The stew chicken was served with a small salad, rice and peas, and boiled vegetables. Everything was well-prepared, especially the dhalpourie roti. In my opinion, I feel the food is not filling, as I was looking to eat again after an hour. Other than that, Shalama's Roti Shop is a decent place. I am interested in coming back to try their bakes, which is made on Sundays. read more

I took a chance and searched for Surinamese food, just to try my luck. Was glad I found this spot on Yelp. Didn't eat Roti for a while now, and was thrilled Shalama's was not to far from my hotel. I got the goat roti and had it spicy. Service was friendly and the food was done quickly. Took it back to my hotel and enjoyed it for sure. Watch for bones when you eat it though. I recommend to eat it with a fork and knife, just to be sure. Definitely a spot to come back to, and eat some more. read more

Wowwwwww!!!! Typing as I indulge and experience a combination of the tastiest flavors beautifully married together to make the absolute most delicious shrimp Aloo Pie in all of Florida. The tamarind, cucumber and pepper sauces merge and with each bite you are transported to your favorite place in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The doubles is equally as delicious as well as the pholourie. This humble restaurant is tucked inside of a larger strip mall in Margate and is literally one of a kind in the area. There is ample parking outside of the restaurant. You are pleasantly welcomed and can find the daily menu options on the overhead menu board. Be sure to get there early though because once the items are gone for that day, you're out of luck. They have traditional Caribbean cuisine native to Trinidad and Tobago and excellent quality and service. I stopped by Shalama Halal Roti Shop in Margate yesterday just before lunch for the first time in a very long while. I ordered 5 doubles and a curry beef roti, spending about $28 and change. Unfortunately, it was a terrible experience. The doubles were cold, and the curry beef tasted spoiled, even though I checked and started eating about 15 minutes after purchase. I'm not sure if they have a new cook or just left the food out too long, but the quality has really gone downhill. Very disappointed ....I won't be returning. read more

Came here after reading Brian B and Juliet's reviews. I wanted to try something new. Great hospitable service and good food. There were a lot of locals coming in. I ordered two doubles. It's two pita-like breads that have peas in the middle in a sauce. They're delicious and have a generous portion of the protein. Chicken roti wrap was okay. The chicken could have been a bit juicer and on its own was lacking in flavor. I asked for hot sauce on the side which made it a lot better. Worth a try. Aloo pie was good. I guess it's similar to an empanada. It had a sweetness to it. Next time I'll order this but I'll add protein protein to it for an up charge. They also had fresh coconut juice. From what I understand, it's freshly bottled. It is delicious and refreshing. I would definitely come back for the doubles. I would also like to try more of their menu. So glad I'd read Yelp Elite Brian B's review and bookmarked this location. We've come to this shopping center many times -- but to the other end for Vietnamese food and for the WID thrift shop. But we'd never discovered this restaurant. We like Caribbean food having traveled to many of the islands. So we headed over here for lunch. I knew I wanted to try one of their doubles -- which we did and shared -- as an "appetizer" as it was ready pdq. The chickpea filling was wonderful. I liked that it wasn't spicy but that they had hot pepper sauce (for the hubby) to add on if one wished. He chose to get their Wednesday lunch special of brown stewed chicken. It came with cabbage salad and red beans and rice. The chicken is on the bone so no formal dining here. They also had oxtail as a special today as well. I got their shrimp curry roti as a "plate" with the roti (flatbread) on the side. I find it easier to eat that way and can mix and match the inside fillings. The curry in one compartment of the container had a slight peppery kick but was not over powering. Then there was the mixture of chickpeas (as in the doubles) and separately potatoes in a sauce. Everything was delicious. But I think next time I'll try their boneless chicken or maybe their oxtail. You order at the counter and they deliver your food to you. It comes in take out containers with plastic ware. You help yourself to drinks in the cooler up front. You pay on the way out. They do a big takeout business, but also have several tables inside where you can dine. The guy taking our order was very nice. Ya Mon! A great lunch STOP this afternoon. My wife was in the mood for a Roti and I was in the mood for anything Caribbean . I chose the Wednesday Special, Brown Stew Chicken. They also had Oxtail which was very tempting, but I stuck with the chicken. My wife went with the Curry Shrimp Roti. KOLA CHAMPAGNE for my beverage. We shared a Double as it was ready right away. Delicious! After a short wait our food was ready, delivered to our table by the kitchen. My chicken was tender and flavorful. Shalama's has been in the corner of this plaza on 441 in Margate for at least a quarter of a century. A restaurant doesn't make it that long without having superior food and a loyal following. The best part of living in South Florida is the diversity of our people and the blending and sharing of each other's cultures and traditions, including food! For a taste of Trinidad, make your way to Shalama's for a roti, doubles, or aloo pie. Sunday specials include bake and shark. Doubles are two small pieces of bara (flat "bread" made of fried dough that serve as a (pita-like) wrap). I hate to describe them that way as they are lighter, more airy, with a little chew. Maybe a cross between a pita and Na'an. Just a guess, but it seems the second piece serves as insurance if the first fails at containing the delicious filling of curried channa (chickpeas) and chutney. Keep in mind, even if ordering one, it is still called doubles and never a double. These are delicious and the spice level is tailored to your liking. I prefer mine with delicate spice (mild). Another favorite is their aloo pies. This is more or less Trinidad's version of an empanada, which most of us in South Florida are much more familiar with. Again, delicious. For $2 it will be filled with the curried chickpeas and chutney, but for an extra $1.50 you can add meat. This is another must try for the full experience. Finally, as the front window indicates, Shalama's is a roti shop. You can order yours with a variety or proteins. This is basically stewed meat and potatoes served in a wrap with pepper sauce. My favorite is the boneless chicken, but that have many choices from shrimp to goat. You can also order a buss-up-shut, which from what I can tell is basically a deconstructed roti. Besides it is fun to order. On Sunday's, they offer specials that are not available throughout the week. Many people will be excited about the opportunity to have bake and shark or bake and salt fish. I have had the former and really enjoyed it. I really enjoy the freshness and quality that you get at Shalama's. There is a reason that they have been serving the Caribbean community and those that enjoy their food for decades. The place is small, but they have a handful of tables if you want to eat in. Mostly I order mine to go as it is meant as a counter service, quick and easy, high-quality restaurant. Most of the items are considered street food, so expect casual, but delicious. If you eat Chipotle twice a week, Shalama's is not for you. I'm so thrilled I found this Trini roti shop. I've been living out of state for many years, and couldn't wait to eat authentic West Indian food again on my visit. These flavors were so good I think I had a mouthgasm. I'm strictly vegetarian, and their food did not make me sick, which is a great indicator that they don't cross contaminate with their meat items. I got channa double (wildly flavorful!), pholourie (fresh, great texture!), and the veggie roti (4 different veg items went in!). I can't even say what was my favorite. And the grand finale was they had cassava pone for dessert, which I can never find! While I'm used to the warm spicy Guyanese cassava pone, this was sweeter, lighter, and somewhat floral. Quite delicious after a hot day at the ocean. Pro tip: They looked at my white, sunburned self and asked if I wanted spicy, in that way that had me worried how much I'd be sweating - so I said just a little spicy. this is the first time I've been to this location after passing it 1, million times. One thing I will say about this place versus other places I've tried, anytime I ordered a curry goat rodeo there's always bones in it, this roadie was pure meat and very delicious. I don't think it's the best roadie in the area, but it gives you the biggest bang for your buck. Price wise it's extremely reasonable and I will be going back to this many times. Randomly drove by this plaza and saw Roti Shop way in the back and decided to stop in for a quick bite. This hidden gem is authentic and serves delicious Trinidadian/Indian food. The staff was very nice. We ordered two doubles, one spicy one regular. The spicy sauce wasn't too bad but added great flavor. The doughy shell was nice and soft, the stuffing was rich and full of chickpeas. We also got a chicken aloo pie. The outside is like Chinese fried dough, so good. The stuff had a curry taste packed with lots of seasoning. I also got a piece of fried eggplant with tamarind sauce inside. Freshly fried from the back kitchen, this was a little oily but so so good. My first time eating a Roti! My friend is a vegetarian, so we Yelped an Indian place for some flavorful vegetarian options. It's a little mom-n-pop restaurant with BIG flavors! I ordered the boneless chicken roti, and my friend obviously had the vegetarian roti. It's a huge flatbread with curried chicken wrapped inside of it. I ordered mine a little spicy, and I loved the flavor inside. I only ate half of my roti at the time because I got very full off of it, and ate the rest later at home. My friend loved her order too, and ate all of it at lunch. She said it was bursting with vegetables and that she enjoyed her meal as well. The same man who made our roti also works the cash register. The restaurant was consistently busy with customers, which was great to see. You might wait a little bit to get your food or pay, but everyone is respectful and takes turns so the process moves organically. Loved the fact that the cook was making roti (bread) dough fresh while I went there on my lunch break. The gentleman who assisted me with my order was cordial and very professional. I had a few questions which he assisted and gave me his restaurant card if I had other questions related to the food or menu. I ordered two doubles which consisted of chickpea and gravy (almost like a Indian choley) with the roti being like a puri (Indian type of bread) version. I asked for it to be spicy he added multiple home made mystery sauces which I didn't ask what they were but whatever was in the different three sauces it had a nice kick to it. I literally ate my food in less than 10 minutes back at the office. My co workers recommended this place to me and it didn't disappoint. They warned me that it's not a fancy restaurant and I replied as long as the food is good I'm not worried about picking up food from a casual take out place. Ahh yes. I love my Trinidadian people and most importantly the food! this has become one of my go to roti shops in the area. Its Located in a plaza, right off of state road 7. Plus There is lots of parking so that's never an issue. Walking in, the place is very casual with about 4 tables and chairs along the side for those who want to grab a seat to enjoy their meal right away. (Its what you'd expect a roti shop to look like) The place is always clean and has a nice simple decor. In the front you can find goodies for those who don't have the time to make it on their own, like pepper sauce, tamarind sauce and kuchela (spicy grated mango that goes perfectly with any and all trini food). They add spoonful of these sauces to your food when you're ordering if youd like. They also carry packets of curry and chowmein noodles. For the food, the have daily specials. The "pelau" (rice&peas with chicken) is one of the best ive ever had and ive tried a lot of pelous lol. I cant remember what day they serve it but its a must try it. The saltfish and bake (fried round shaped dough)is also really good and I'm not normally a huge fan of saltfish but here it just has some great flavors that just grab you! The fry bake is perfect! When tryingTRINIDADIAN food for the first time, you have to get this. The main attraction or as my mom says, what either makes or breaks a roti shop, the DOUBLES! 2 Bara with chana . For those who might not be familiar, it's like a sandwich . The bara (fried flat bread) although it taste way better than its described with chana (curried chick peas) Here at Shamalas, they do not disappoint! I could eat the Bara by itself. The chana is delicious! Soft and flavorful. Also for a grab and go, Aloo(potato) Pie is one of my favs. Its a fried potato filled dough, that they could add the chana in or enjoy it without the Chana and add some tamarind sauce! The roti here is also great! Try the "bussop shot" its a soft buttery type of roti that's...well....busted up! lol after its cooked its "clapped" together giving you it in pieces rather than a round roti. Out of the different kinds of roti there is, this is number one for me. For drinks the apple jay is my go to. My 2 nd favorite drink is the banana Solo or Red Solo. Oh and on Sunday they sell Shark & bake which is another trini tradition that is very tasty. *however i love it with pineapple and i noticed they don't add it here. Why don't we have ANY roti shops in California?!? Growing up, my parents always talked about "real Trinidadian roti" and the flavors of the West Indies. I only got to try these flavors when my grandmother was still able to cook or when we visited family that knew how to make these things. Needless to say when I found out there were roti shops in Florida, I was super excited. Per recommendation, we tried Shalamas's not once but twice anddd we brought some back with us! Say what you want but Naan and all the other rotis in CA do not compare! We were greeted as soon as we walked in and the guys behind the counter were super friendly. They explained some of the foods to us before we made our final decision to get roti with curry chicken, buss-up-shut and beef and doubles. This was the first time we'd heard of doubles and loved them! Everything was hot, freshly made and delicious- just like grandma use to make. The Curry Chicken in Roti reminded of me my dad's cooking. I kept thinking, "so this is the flavor dad is trying to replicate! It's pretty close!" If you get the chicken in roti, I recommend getting the boneless chicken. I forgot the chicken is wrapped in the roti so we had a lot of bones to take out. The beef was tender and had a lot of flavor. The spices and oils teased the taste buds making out mouths water. Of the three items, the doubles were my favorite. I love the flavor of the curry and chickpeas. If I could make those at home I'd probably eat them all the time. Shalama's is located in the corner of a small strip mall. The staff is great and you definitely get your monies worth. Nicki Minaj's food? Please and thank you. So I ordered a buss-up shut which based on my Trinidadian Indian cuisine research is Indian paratha. It was served with a curried chicken. Meat was hella tender and fall off the bone. Oh and perfectly spicy! I got a side of spiced potes too which were creamy and spicy. Then there was this awesome side of garbanzo beans which were cooked to the consistency of refried pinto beans but so much better! There was a sweet and pleasant kick to them! Wish I knew the name. As for the paratha - STEAMING hot and fresh! So soft and buttery. Totes perf! Lastly I got a aloo pie which if you're familiar with Indian cuisine, I believe aloo refers to a spiced pote mixture. This place is responsible for my massive weight gain every weekend. Most Triny places I've gone to I have one dish that I enjoy; at Shalama's though, I enjoy EVERY dish. The food use to be good here, but not anymore I've ordered the curry chicken with roti and the curry is always watered down. The pholourie is either a hit or miss and forget about the tamarind sauce its watered down.
