This unique Japanese-Jewish fusion absolutely delights! I wish certain flavors came out more but overall a great experience. I love how this place encourages sharing so you get to try a lot of different, distinct flavors. Let's dive in ... Sake Kasu Challah (5/5): The bread is easy to pull apart and is perfectly seasoned. The butter was perhaps the star though as it was sweet and salty and just beautifully accompanied its carby bread companion. Matzoh Ball Ramen (3/5): I've read so much about this item so the expectations were high. The matzo ball itself is a nice middle of the ground firmness whereby it's not too hard or soft and can't offend a soul. I like my matzo balls more dense but it's a notably divisive issue in our community (and even my own family) -- so their ball firmness was a safe choice. The most underwhelming part was actually the broth; I expected more umami flavor and was disappointed by this. I was glad our server recommended an extra matzo ball for every person in our group so we could each have an entire ball. Grilled Ceasar Salad (3/5): This dish in general is an acquired taste as the grilling really tends to wilt the lettuce. This particular salad was caked in dressing. I liked the anchovy chunks but that's not for everyone I recognize. Okonomiyaki (5/5): This was by far my favorite dish of the meal (the server said this was their fav and I can see why!). The meaty pastrami chunks have a lovely crisp and Maillard browning. The bonito flakes add that necessary umami fishy flavor. The sauce is sweet but not overpowering. And the pancake itself had the PERFECT fried crisp. Wagyu Pastrami Sandwich (4/5): The kitchen staff kindly sliced this in four. The bread tastes like typical white bread. The mustard didn't come through enough for me (compared to your standard spicy brown Jewish deli mustard). The wagyu reminded me of a standard Katz's pastrami but perhaps a bit more chew as wagyu IS known for its beautiful fatty marbling. Chocolate Banana Challah Bread Pudding (3/5): This dish is served warm but I wanted more of the sauce and whipped cream. I usually think of bread pudding as more "soaked" so I'm taking off a point on that -- though my partner thought this was better than bread pudding. Service (5/5): Very attentive servers who helped us order enough food (though we did have leftovers). Staff refilled water throughout the meal without us asking. By the end of the meal they needed the table for a reservation but offered to reseat us in the heated tented area. We declined but appreciated the offer. They were also very polite about informing us when they needed the table. It's a small-ish footprint indoors (not including heated and outdoor tables). Came here on a Tuesday night around 5:45pm for their happy hour deal. We didn't have reservations, but we were seated right away. The servers were very friendly. Food: We only got the Matzoh Ball Ramen because it was BOGO. This was my first time having a matzoh ball soup and I enjoyed it a lot. Shalom Japan had been languishing in my bookmarks for ages, so I leapt at the chance to convince dinner companions to go when we found ourselves in the neighborhood. It was a last-minute decision and therefore, we showed up without reservations only to find a packed snug (but not too snug) dining room. Thankfully we didn't have to wait too long; make a reservation on Resy ahead of time if you can. We shared a few appetizers, ordered our own mains, and split some desserts. I selected the matzo ball ramen ($19) with a foie gras dumpling ($4) and was content. It was a chilly wet evening which was also prime ramen weather. Oh, and the restroom sports charming ramen wallpaper! We all approved of the sake kasu challah ($7), Jew egg ($17), and lion's mane karaage ($18). Note that it's Jew egg and not Jew eggs; there's just one falafel-esque egg but it's still yummy, being accompanied by hummus, Israeli salad, feta, olives, and mint. Our dessert choices were the matcha ice cream parfait ($13) and the Japanese sweet potato cheesecake ($12). I was expecting to prefer the cheesecake but I ended up adoring the matcha ice cream parfait. Can't beat that potent matcha flavor. We all agreed the prices were a hair high but were satisfied with the food and the unique culinary concept. And our server was a friendly and helpful guy. Made a reservation here for a birthday celebration. It is a very small indoor space for the restaurant with some additional outdoor tables. The space is overall on the louder side and you are seated very close to others. We started with challah which was delicious with the butter. We then split the matzah ball rame and the mazemen. The matzah ball ramen was a great combination and very tasty. The mazemen was excellent and I enjoyed it. The service overall was good, we didn't wait too long for our seats or food but nothing too spectacular. I ordered the sweet and sawa cocktail as well which was good. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Shalom Japan. As someone fond of both Japanese and Jewish food, I was curious how this fusion would be and their take is creative and tasty. The pace of the meal wasn't rushed which allowed the diner to enjoy each course. Challah- $7- paying $7 for a challah bun is a lot but it was good, especially with the accompanying golden raisin butter. The bread itself is a little dry without it. Okonomiyaki- $19- this was very delicious! The pancake was made with sauerkraut and to be honest I couldn't taste the tang of it but it was still great. Crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. There were small pieces of pastrami on top and bonito flakes. I was worried ordering two dishes with pastrami would be too much but it wasn't because there wasn't a lot on this one. Caesar salad- $17- this was surprisingly super memorable! The portion was very large and the Caesar dressing had citrus as a prominent flavor, lemon I believe. There were anchovies on top, but not the ordinary kind, white ones which are better. Matzo ball ramen- $19- I like how it's possible to share the ramen at Shalom Japan. They bring out small bowls so you can divvy it up. I recommend adding an extra matzo ball, especially if you're sharing. It's a few dollars extra. The soup had carrot and celery in it, reminiscent of matzo ball soup, but also scallion and ramen noodles like a typical bowl of ramen. There were crunchy crouton like bits that added nice crunch. I will say I wasn't that impressed with the chicken char siu but I think what they were doing was pretty cool! Pastrami sando- $22- the pastrami was very good but what really stood out was the bread. It was definitely homemade. Not your typical rye, but a milk bread version. It was fluffy and soft. We arrived for our 8:30 dinner reservation and had about a half hour/45 min wait which was a bit frustrating but the hostess felt so bad she gave us all free glasses of Prosecco while we waited and gave us the challah with butter for free when we sat down. Totally made our night. I had the vegan mazemen which was DELICIOUS. So unique and creamy, with delicious sesame and umami flavors. My fiancée loved his matzoh ball ramen (how could you really go wrong) and the challah with butter was super yummy and warm. Our friend was a bit "meh" about his pastrami sandwich and didn't really see the "Japanese" twist on it. The desserts were decent but nothing super special. I'd skip. The restaurant is really small and cramped, which is the only reason I'm knocking a star. They should tell tables they have a strict 90 min dinner time bc people were really just hanging around at their tables for a looooong time after they were done eating. Came here with a friend for dinner and we shared the lions mane karrage, the sake kasu challah and the matcha parfait for dessert. I got the matzoh ball ramen and was super hyped to try it. The broth is really rich but I was disappointed that there was only one piece of chicken and one matzoh ball. To it's credit the matzoh ball was really good and the egg was cooked perfectly. This was the most expensive mediocre food I've had in a while. I came here for the matzo ramen and it was okay. Several people noted this was just as good as Japan and I've been to Japan and it is not lol. Also my ramen spoon was placed ON the table and not handed to me. Personally that is not sterile and would rather have been given the spoon directly. We ordered one ramen, one egg and cheese sandwich and one sake drink, the total with tip was $60+ I would not go here again. For the starters we had the challah, the lions mane friend mushrooms, and the latke. You can skip the challah. the latke was AMAZING and i could have ate like 3. Cute, home-y spot for good comfort food! I came here on a Sunday around 6PM. Yelp had quoted a 40 minute wait time but we were around the corner, so we decided to check it out and it was quite empty. We were seated immediately! The place was super cute and cozy. We ordered a Jew egg, and okonomiyaki, and a special for the night which was a lemon-y fluke. Jew egg was good! It honestly wasn't anything mind blowing and was exactly what I expected to be. Regardless, I enjoyed the flavors and the hummus was really good. I've never been a huge okonomiyaki fan but I found this one, which had pastrami, to be better than the traditional ones I'm used to. My boyfriend also seemed to enjoy this one, and commented how he liked that there was cabbage, so i'd say this one was a win. It was pretty filling too. The fluke was really good. It was fried with some type of crust, and the fish itself was super tender and moist. It came in a lemon sauce with potatoes and asparagus and a few mushrooms. I thought this was a really simple and light dish that I thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, I wouldn't say this place was anything crazy different or insanely unique. On a frigid, blustery night in Brooklyn, this restaurant called out to me. From across the S. 4th bridge, I was drawn, like a moth to the flame (or a cold person to heat) to the warm glow of bistro lights that crisscross the exterior of Shalom Japan. The music was as soft and soulful as the ambience and quickly placed me and my fiancé into a comfortable trance. After hearing so many great things about this place, I'm so disappointed after last night. My gf and I made a reservation for 8:00 (Friday) and we were seated right away. The waiter took our order right away. It went downhill from here. The service was so slow. It took them over a hour to bring our 2 appetizers (roasted oysters and okonamiyaki). Then it took forever for our lox bowl and matzo ball ramen to come out. Mind you, these are all dishes that are typically brought out quickly anywhere else you go. Roasted oysters - they were okay. It had a strong butter flavor to it and you were able to taste the texture of the oyster ok Okonamiyaki - this dish tasted amazing. However way over priced. I believe it was $18. I really liked the crisp on the pancake, I assume it's supposed to resemble lakte. The pastrami in it was good, as was the sauerkraut and I'm typically not a huge sauerkrauts fan. Matza ball ramen - the broth was good but there wasn't nearly enough of it. It tasted like a regular matza ball soup. The matza ball was fine. Nothing special. The foie gras dumpling tasted like a mediocre pork dumpling. Overall, this dish was fine but again, way overpriced. $25 for this???? Lox bowl - like the ramen, it was fine. The salmon and ikura were ok, definitely not the freshest. The rice was not cooked well, a little too sticky and didn't have any flavor to it. It was $27. Let's start at the top; on taste alone are Shalom Japan's offerings the best things I have ever eaten; nope. But did the experience at this restaurant transcend reviewing this place solely on its' food; your g-d damn right. My wife and I came here on Saturday and got a slew of dishes that ranged from pretty good to outstanding including the Jew Egg, Okonomiyaki, Sesame Mazeman, Pastrami Sando, and the Matzah Ball Ramen. Out of those 4, the highlights clearly belonged to the Sando and the Ramen. The Sando hands down might be the best rendition of a Pastrami Sandwich I have ever had. Who can say no to fatty, melt in your mouth, wagyu Pastrami between Japanese milk bread, that has some nice rye flavor added, and some strong deli mustard. But the real winner in my eyes was the Matzah Ball Ramen (with the addition of the Foie Gras Dumpling). Have I had better ramens in my life; yes. Have I had better Matzah Balls and Chicken Soups in my life; yes. But have I ever seen my wife legit ugly cry while eating something; absolutely not. Eating Shalom Japan's Matzah Ball Ramen took her back to spending time with her late grandma when she was a little girl in their old Brooklyn apartment as she would help deliver soup to everyone on Passover who were waiting for a scrumptious bowl of Jewish penicillin. The waiter, my tea and the butter for the challah were the highlights of my dining experience. We we're informed that the menu was meant to be eaten family style which was fine with us as we wanted to try a variety of dishes from the small menu. I've had this restaurant on my list for quite some time and was highly intrigued by the Jewish and Japanese fusion dishes. Unfortunately the food was underwhelming. The portions were small, the prices were high, and the flavor was minimal. I am leaving 3 stars just because of how great our waiter was. He truly deserved 5 stars on his own! The staff brought the dishes quickly and while they were still warm despite it being a full restaurant. I'd also like to mention the restaurant is small and we did not have a reservation. However we were seated quickly in the overflow area that was a covered outside spot with heaters. The heaters were directly above our table which kept us warm. This area was small but we didn't mind it because we had more space than guests dining in the main area. They kept the divider door closed and would only open one half of it for guests and the waiters which was odd because it was a fairly tiny opening that you'd have to almost shimmy through. If you do plan on coming make a reservation. Jew Egg - Although it's appealing I'd recommend skipping it. For $17 I'd expect more. The yogurt dip that came with it was fine but it didn't add much to the dish and lacked tang. I'm not an egg expert but my friend mentioned it lacked the runniness soft boiled eggs typical have. Challah bread and raisin butter - the bread was quite good and came warm. The star of the show in my opinion was the raisin butter. However if this is what you're coming for I'm sure you can find a bakery in the area to serve as an alternative. Wagyu Sando - Skip this. The sandwich was just fatty meat on plain bread. The pickle to me tasted as if someone covered a cucumber in salt to extract the water for a different dish but changed their mind and served it as a pickle. Mazemen - This noodle dish was described to us as broth-less and creamy with an Unami flavor. We opted to not add an egg because we assumed the dish itself was creamy enough and the addition would be an overkill - we were right. While it wasn't the most flavorful item it was just fine and probably the best thing we ate. My friend had a yuzu cocktail which was actually delicious. I'd say this place would be best suited for someone interested in getting drinks and maybe a small plate or two. One of the most unique prix fixe dining experiences I've ever had! Shalom Japan is a modern Jewish and Japanese fusion dining experience with such high quality food. The combination of the two cuisine flavor profile is so unusual yet works so well together! We came for the 10th Annual Christmas Eve dinner, prix fixe for $75 with an assortment of appetizers, entree, and dessert. The ambiance of the restaurant is super cozy, it probably fits 30 guests with dimly lit candles on each table and a projector playing My Neighbor Totoro. The appetizers / starters: -Caesar salad, beet jew egg, mushroom karage, okonomi-latke -Each dish was so unique -My favorite 1: Beet Jew Egg, the egg was encrusted in almost a Chinese like five spices flavor and complemented so well to the beets, dill and sour cream -My favorite 2: mushroom karage - the mushroom was slightly crunchy, softly fried and it was so juicy on the inside, little pockets of flavor, WOW! Entrees: lox bowl, A5 miyazaki beef hot pot -the lox bowl had a bunch of ingredients, like a fancy poke bowl, the fish was super fresh and complemented really well to the rice underneath and the fish roe topping (I don't usually like fish roe but this one I actually liked the combo!) - A5 miyazaki beef hot pot: the beef is like melt in your mouth, buttery, there was a treasure cove of goodness in there - radish, mushrooms, cabbage, veggies, noodles, absolutely incredible! Dessert: sweet potato cheesecake, banana challah bread pudding -the sweet potato cheesecake was light, fluffy, and slightly sweet, growing up in Asian cultures my desserts are always only lightly sweet so this really hits home for me! -banana challah bread pudding: the challah soaked in the sauce so well, each bite was incredible By the end of this meal, we were very full and satisfied. I came to Shalom Japan very excited! I'm Jewish and I love Japanese food, so I thought I had found a new favorite restaurant. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed by the end. I thought the prices were high and the food was pretty mediocre. The thing about fusion cuisine restaurants is that in order for them to work, I think the dishes need to be really well thought out AND well executed. I think the dishes at Shalom Japan had Greta thought behind them, but weren't properly executed. We had the sake kasu challah, beet jew egg, matzoh ball ramen, and lox bowl. The challah was probably the highlight of the meal, which was pretty sad considering it was about the size of a dinner roll and they only give you a dollop of the golden raisin butter. The beet jew egg felt very out of place amongst the rest of the menu/our dishes and although it was decent, we regretted ordering it. My friend did not enjoy the matzoh ball ramen very much. He said it was bland/underwhelming. Next was my lox bowl. I liked this, but I thought it was extremely overpriced for what it was and unfortunately, lox with sushi rice/sushi toppers just isn't as good as sushi grade salmon. Like I said previously, it was a nice idea, but the execution wasn't there. I don't know if I would come back. I think there are better Jewish and Japanese restaurants all over NY, and combining them in a mediocre way isn't necessarily worth a revisit. read more

Fittingly situated on the border of Chasidic Williamsburg, Shalom Japan makes a valiant effort to pair two unlikely cuisines. Despite neither being especially known for its vegetarian offerings, we were nonetheless intrigued enough to give it a shot. Ironically the favorite dish of the evening evoked the least "fusion": sesame ramen with a tea egg on top. Perhaps Jewish because of some tahini in the sesame sauce? In any case a delicious bowl of noodles on a cold evening. The appetizers I could have done without. The challah was fine, but I actually prefer the simple post-Shabbat offerings at temple. So glad I finally tried this spot while in town recently. The service was attentive and kind, and the food was soulful and spot on. We had the matzo ball ramen, the Okonomiyaki and the garden salad, and everything harmonized together so beautifully. The soup broth had great flavor, but not salt-forward as another reviewer mentioned, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. And all the textures mingling with the tastes in the Okonomiyaki...well, let's just say it all made me very happy. The salad was fresh and simple with nuance, complementing the other dishes. Don't get me wrong, the food is 5-star in flavor, but it's quite overpriced, even by NY standards. The challah, which they recommend as a starter, is a whopping $7 and a little smaller than the size of your average donut. Jew-egg is delicious but again, expensive. the asparagus is a standout though! The mains are a little more appropriate in price, but don't quite showcase fusion flavors as much and are hard to distinguish from traditional ramen or mazemen. Oysters were so-so in flavor, overwhelmingly fried in taste more than oyster. Definitely the first time and possibly the last time I'll have Japanese & Jewish fusion. The idea sounds pretty cool in concept, but I was a bit disappointed with the foods. They were very pricey and also tiny portions, but sadly they just were not that good in the opinion of my friends and myself. The pastrami Sando claimed to be Wagyu but it was not nearly as fatty and flavorful as I would have expected. Perhaps the saddest part was just how bad the service was. There weren't too many diners the night we came, but it still took forever for our server to come around, especially when we were waiting for the check. Made reservations for a date with friend on Friday night at 2pm, I've been wanting to try this place since I moved to Brooklyn and we were both excited! The restaurant itself was very cute and has a full bar. The atmosphere was nice and menu was easy to order from because of nice amount of choices. We ordered a challah bread, motts ball ramen to share, tuna tataki, Okonomiaki and finished with some banana bread pudding. The Sake Kasu challah was delicious and the sauce is made from by product of sake. It was one of my favorite items and we ended up ordering more! The okonomiaki was okay, and everything was tasty including the drinks! Not sure if it was just that day, but the ac was broken and it was extremely loud inside and we could barely hear each other. This kind of dampened the experience a little bit and made us want to leave. Overall we both agreed that it was fun trying at least once but not sure if we would come back again, because everything felt like it was maybe 3 dollars too expensive and portions too small. Conclusion, maybe come at least once and make sure to try the challah for sure ;) read more
