I've been gone this place over 20 years. Never have they failed me. The food is excellent fresh. Their service is good. They get here within the time limit family owned restaurant. I had the Mongolian beef with rice and egg roll and soup crab Rangoon's. And edamame yummy

Amazing food!! Solid place to go try Jjangmyeon and Jjampong!! Very good sweet and sour beef as well!! Mandarin chicken wings are solid!! Definitely worth visiting!! Service is good and servers are friendly! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is a bit rustic but I've been here many times for over 20 years![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The sweet and sour pork left a lot to be desired. They used really fatty pieces of pork, as well as sliced pork shoulder. The o.g. places typically use loin or other muscular cuts. The jjajangmyun was okay. The jjamppong was okay. Customer service was a bit lacking even though the place wasn't that busy for a Sunday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant space was cozy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The search for amazing Korean-Chinese cuisine continues!

I ordered the Shrimp Lo Mein it was phenomenal. It had good flavor and it wasn't dry . I ordered for pick up and let me tell you the portion was very decent . I used to go as a kid and I'm glad to see that the restaurant is still running and serving the amazing food I grew up eating . The staff is very charismatic and sweet

My friend and I went to this spot on Tuesday for lunch. Plenty of seating inside and there's lots of space outside for parking so there were no problems in regards to that. My friend and I ordered the Pan Fried Dumplings (6) for appetizers and they were great- each dumpling was big and the filling was juicy and packed with meat and veggies. For the entree, my friend got the Mongolian Beef w/Fried Rice Lunch Special and I ordered the Jajangmyeon. The Mongolian Beef was delicious but unfortunately the fried rice was a let down. The jajangmyeon tasted great though and the portion was generous. I also appreciated how the meal came with wonton soup and fried wonton strips. As for the service, everyone here was very kind and they constantly refilled our waters and checked in on our dining experience. Overall, this is a great Korean-Chinese spot and I hope to come back!

    Egg drop soup

We came here because of all the positive reviews. We were definitely disappointed. Egg drop soup was not a traditional version. Just some kind of weird yellow broth and cooked egg pieces. Salt pepper shrimp lacked flavor. Stir fried rice was not good. House lo mein left much to be desired. Egg roll was over cooked. Shrimp spring roll was ok, not worth coming back for. On a positive note, the waitress was really nice.

My husband and I stumbled on this restaurant after a nearby place we were planning on going to had closed early. In fact, a lot of restaurants in this area close fairly early, which I'm guessing is because the neighborhood isn't that great. We came here because they have Korean-Chinese dishes like jjajangmyeon, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk on the menu. We were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant and have eaten here twice in one week. Food: The food here is excellent; it's authentic Korean-Chinese food. Even their side dishes--onions, danmuji (pickled radish)--are super old-school. I should know, my mother's side of the family owned a restaurant in Daegu over 30 years ago, and they served the same dishes! At our first visit, we tried the ganjjajang, the jjamppong, and tangsuyuk. Everything was good. At our second visit, we tried the gganpoonggi, shrimp toast (menbosha), and jjajangbap. Again, every dish was on point. The best comparison I have to this restaurant is Paik's Noodles all the way up in Koreatown (Long Pointe area). This restaurant has more variety and the flavors are old-school. Both are excellent, but for us, Shan Hu is way closer to home. Service: The service here is excellent, too. The owner and his wife are attentive (I noticed that the owner speaks both Korean and Chinese, in addition to English). The food comes out promptly and it's piping hot. I like that they have fountain sodas rather than canned sodas. No complaints here. We really enjoyed our two visit here and look forward to coming often.

10/30/21 Quality/Quantity - Good. Steamed Dumpling (6) - Good size, but needed soy sauce for flavor. Ja-Jang Myun - I thought I was spoiled with Bay Area food (Ja-Jang dishes) or maybe I was accustomed to their taste...? It was good, but not the same as the Bay Area. Maybe I just needed more flavor or salt? House Fried Rice - My favorite - comfort food All decent quantities, especially for the price. Atmosphere -  Very busy today. Had a Birthday party taking half the restaurant. I especially like your "Who's Who at Shan Hu" wall. Clean bathrooms. Small but enough parking spaces. Service - Good. Quick. Price - $28.11 + tip; another good meal for a GREAT price. Owner Suggestion - Keep up the good work. Nice good business you got here. I would invest in a little more updates to the place.

    Ro R.

The portion sizes here are very generous while still being affordable. There's plenty of parking and seating, in a casual atmosphere. I was able to order the Jjajangmyeon with no meat as I'm a vegetarian and the employees were very helpful and nice. The curry bean curd was delicious and I'll definitely return to try more of their menu! I will note that there were no chopsticks on the table, but I'm not sure if they're available upon request though. They also give you free "chips" for the table while you wait and fortune cookies when you pay.

I was impressed by the portion size, because each half could've been placed in a separate bowl, add more broth (shaved ice and a slice of Korean pear optional), and that's two portions in most places. Historically, these noodle dishes were a rare treat and a delicacy, as these noodles were very labor intensive and hard to make (although I'm sure they're mass produced now), and had to be served cold in the summer heat. Banchan was tasty too, including the kimchi which was early in the fermentation stage. The kimchi pancake was huge, definitely had to take this one to go, and came with an optional Korean-style spicy soy dipping sauce. I ordered the combo and went with the Bulgogi, which was tender and tasty, but didn't come sizzling so the pan it came in was more for display. Still, great good, fantastic value, and definitely the real deal. It's not as fancy as some of the more expensive neighborhoods of Houston (and a bit out of the way for me), but sometimes you just want some really tasty and unpretentious Korean comfort food.

They make their tofu in-house, and you can really taste the difference. The soup is rich, comforting, and flavorful without tasting overloaded with MSG. It's the kind of meal that just warms your soul. We also ordered the cheese tonkatsu, and my husband got the seolleongtang. We normally aren't fans of cheese tonkatsu--in fact, we didn't even realize it had cheese in it when we ordered it--but wow... it was actually so good. Definitely a pleasant surprise. My husband's seolleongtang was amazing too. The banchan was fresh and well-prepared, and every dish we had was delicious. The service was absolutely perfect. The ladies working there were incredibly kind and even brought my husband extra noodles for his soup without us asking. That small gesture really made our experience even more memorable. Thank you so much! There's a decent amount of parking, but dinner time gets pretty busy, so I'd recommend arriving early since it's not a very large restaurant. 10/10. This is definitely one of our favorite Korean restaurants in Houston, and we'll absolutely be back.

That said, the consistency of both service and food quality between visits can be noticeable. Service can be very slow at times, even when the restaurant isn't particularly busy. We've had issues with banchan not being brought out, grills not being turned on, and fish orders taking nearly an hour to arrive. Food quality can also be hit or miss. For example, the Cheese Crab Puffs have occasionally arrived completely cold with barely any crispiness or color, and we've had similar issues with other appetizers. My favorites are the Garlic Salmon Sashimi, Black Angus Marinated Short Rib, Wagyu Beef Belly, Black Angus Rib Finger, and Thick Cut Pork Belly. I also enjoy the Takoyaki, Crispy Tuna Rice, and Tteokbokki. There are a few dishes I would skip, including the Spicy Scallop Sashimi and Nigiri unless you enjoy very small scallops, the Baked Green Mussels, which are overly sweet, and the Prime Beef Brisket, which I've found to be tough and dry. Overall, there are plenty of dishes I genuinely enjoy here, but the inconsistency keeps this from being a place I can wholeheartedly recommend. When everything is executed well, it's a great meal, but you never quite know what kind of experience you're going to get. That being said, I tend to get good ones the majority of the time.

What's nice is you can get many of the dishes with noodles or rice as your starch of choice. 10/10 Jjamppong - the broth is flavorful, seafood rich, and noodles perfectly bouncy. SOO good.
